Something else I like about NW is after the bye week QB Bacher should be 100% for this game..I believe that his injury (injury to throwing hand) has been the main reason for Northwestern not scoring as much as they should against Ohio.. After the rest he and this team should be primed for a good game. After watching MSU the last few weeks, it just looks to me like they are getting too one deminisional and conservative and depending on Ringer too much..At this rate this kid is going to get worn down. If he isn't already is. Plus I haven't been impressed with Hoyer. I can see NW stacking the line and making him beat them, which in my opnion he can't.

I have not been impressed with Hoyer so far this season either. But he did show some life in the Indiana game and Dell's progression has come along nicely. But the Spartans should be getting guys back on a depleted secondary. Weaver and Wiley should be ready to go.
Ringer isn't a concern YET for me (let's see how he handles with the big boys), he only had 25 carries last week against Iowa. Judging by the 2 road games and last year's game, this should be a shootout. But IF Ringer can get going early (something he wasnt able to do last week) the Spartans will grind out a win.
Historically, this is a game that they would tank in, leading up to the meat of their schedule, but this game itself has "some" impact on the Big 10 race this year. They wont be looking ahead. Dantonio took special exception with the (non-existant) defensive performance in this game last year. I'm not sold on MSU by any means, but I think they win this game. Just my 2 cents.

i still like msu, just don't think they should be favored in this game, especially with the hook i got sunday night... also, isn't dell banged up?? that would hurt considering he's got the most rapport w/ hoyer and on the road you would want hoyer to be as comfortable as possible

Dell and Gantt both missed time in the 2nd half against Iowa but are starting against Northwestern. I didnt hear anything serious after the Iowa game, so we will see how they look.

Trent, I like the Iowa Total. What are your thoughts on the Purdue/NW UNDER? Purdue D playing fairly well, but struggling on offense.

What do you like about BC this week?

hey pez-
hope you're doing well

as far as purdue total, i felt that their offense would take a step down, which is why i played u7 season wins... but they just played 2 tough defenses and we should have been on those unders (especially ohio st secondary always gives purdue fits)... totals were 58 and 47 and now we have a lower total vs a weaker defense...NW defense has improved but still giving up almost 62% completions #87 in ncaa and if purdue does score i feel NW at home can match them

also, the last 3 yrs these totals have been 64, 51 (when NW offense was horrible and i was playing their unders) and 68 so the linesmakers are not helping you out at all if you want to play under

as for BC, it's as much a fade on va tech as their numbers are pretty bad, having gained over 300 yds once in FBS games yet they are 4-1 in those games... BC run defense real tough and va tech might have to rely on inexperienced wrs and arm of taylor to move the ball... feel it catches up to them here and w/ a short fav you're basically just looking for the SU win

good luck

Thanks Trent. All is well out here in PAC 10 country, but the pickings are slim this week in the Conference of Champions. I got on Cal +1 Sunday night, but that is it. Thought about Stanford +2.5 for a few days, but now the line has gone against me and I'm not too thrilled w/ any of the totals.

I ran my numbers on BC and VT and they pretty much concur w/ your assessment of the game.

What is your take on Ohio State/Michigan State? I'm kind of liking Sparty in this one. Buckeye D is superior, but their offense has really been struggling. I also like Dantonio. He always seems to have his teams ready to play.

Lastly, I got IU +17 Sunday night because I thought the number was a little too high, but I'm having 2nd thoughts. They have let me down the last several weeks.

i can make a case for both ohio st and mich st so i'm passing on that... i will say that ohio st has a way of making average qbs look bad and hoyer would be considered average imo

have no faith in indiana after they got blown out at home vs iowa... looks like you got a good number though

1* tenn -7 bought hook
1* maryland +1.5

tennessee has been horibble on offense but their defense has played at a top level... now they get to go against the worst offense in the conference at home at night... just think this is the week tennessee gets running game and offense going and score in the 20s, hold miss st to single-digits

maryland has the better run game and has played well at home with turner at qb, although he's had troubles on the road... would think coming off bye might be settling for qb who didn't start the season and a new offensive coordinator... now w/ swank injured a tight game might come down to new WF kicker

good luck

nice to be consistent... :ohno:

5* mich +4.5
5* fsu - 5.5
3* purdue pk
2* louisville +4.5
1* baylor +11.5
waiting on 2 more games for line movement

think about how weird this is:
mich st lost by over 40 pts at home last week and now are favored over michigan in the big house...

mich st has been stuffed by good defensive teams (iowa, ohio st) and has looked great against the weak defenses in the conference (IU and NW)... I feel michigan will control the ground game and getting pts at home helps

fsu defensive speed will be tough on qb taylor, who gains most of his yards by scrambling and outrunning slower defenses as pass offense is still a work in progress w/ young wrs... v tech did not get in the endzone on offense last week and fsu is finally starting to realize that running the ball is a good thing, with 145-88 run/pass last 3 games, all wins

good luck

both teams defenses ahead of their offenses... as noted above, fsu has run 60/40 last 3 games, while v tech runs almost 70% of time... even in loss last week vtech ran 60/40 and have gained over 300 yds just once in 6 fbs games

good luck

Good luck this week Trent. I like the Louisville selection. What are your thoughts on Penn St/Ohio State?

Say it aint so trent! You got that line early as it's dropping!

But really how can you make this a 5*? Too many questions in this one: How will MSU respond after getting blown out at home and how will U of M get a win???

I will agree that when it's a more "evened" matchup that the games are close ones so why not take U of M getting points at home? Because it's 2-5 U of M! So why not take MSU then? Because it might be the "Same Old Spartans!

Basically what I am trying to say is stay away! I'd like to take MSU here but I think I will just go to the game and enjoy it, and count my winnings on other games. I will say this, MSU needs this win more than U of M.

I was liking FSU and Purdue as well. Keep up the good work.

what's up sparty..??

i know rivalry games can go either way but i threw that out the window and just looked at matchups and numbers

you can't ignore the problems msu has had w/ better defenses and they looked so out of synch w/ their young wrs last week vs ohio st... if the run gets stopped it will be tough imo for hoyer to lead that offense on the road against a tough defense that has gotten the unfortunate responsibility of having to carry the load that their offense has left them with

also, you would expect mich offense to improve through out the year, but it seems that msu offense has been figured out: stop ringer and force hoyer and young wrs to beat you... on a positive note i think there is a lot of talent at wr, they are just young and now forced into a major role if ringer is contained. hoyer has proven to be a liability against better defenses (bowl game vs bc, mich & oh st last yr and better defenses this yr)

there is no doubt in my mind that the strongest unit on the field saturday will be the wolverine defense... because of that i feel the michigan running game will be more effective than the msu running game. then when you consider at home AND getting points it makes for a strong play for me

finally, i'm not sure that this game means more to msu... most years i would agree, but try telling rich rodriguez and the rest of the michigan team that after losing 3 games at home already and rivalry games @ ND and penn st... and you know better than anybody that the michigan fans, students and alumni, would love nothing more than to beat msu in a down year!! they probably know that they're not beating ohio st this year, so this is the one game on the schedule that can make up for all the losing...

1* BC +3

also bought off of Baylor now that i see both CBs might not play

think BC stops unc run game and makes them one-dimensional... eagles finally have some speed at skill positions and a running game that was non-existant last year has some new pop in harris and haden

good luck

I agree, trouble is Michigan is not a great defense, they are a decent one that will let up the big play. Yes Hoyer is not the answer, but Ringer will have a decent (not a career day) game, keep the offense on the field long enough to make plays and wear down the Mich defense in the second half, where they have given up the big yards.

also, you would expect mich offense to improve through out the year

You would expect it, but it hasnt happened by now. Breakdown of fundamentals will again lead to turnovers.

, but it seems that msu offense has been figured out: stop ringer and force hoyer and young wrs to beat you...

Not a secret here, it's been their offense since the beginning of the year.Yes, good teams can do it, but again, that was OSU which obviously is a lot better team defensively.

on a positive note i think there is a lot of talent at wr, they are just young and now forced into a major role if ringer is contained. hoyer has proven to be a liability against better defenses (bowl game vs bc, mich & oh st last yr and better defenses this yr)

Again, better D.

What would be worse to most people outside the 2 programs, a MSU team that couldnt beat U of M's worst team in 30+ years, or a bad U of M team that got another loss?

It means more to Dantonio after last year, Rich Rod not yet invested in the rivalry, Ringer clearly wants it. MSU needs this game for bragging rights, to show they are still headed in the right direction, that they wont collapse after a bad loss, and to a lesser extent, some recruiting, (Dantonio might actually get a TOP15 class, wont believe it until I see it though)

--------
Sorry if I'm in attack mode, I'm just fired up for the game already! I dont think your pick is the worst thing ever, I just dont feel it to be a strong one as you do. In fact I will wait to see if this line goes down further....

I know I'm prob looking like a big homer right now, but you know I'm pretty straightforward when I think MSU will win or lose and have no problem betting against them as I have done twice already this year.

I'll end it with my prediction: 27-17 MSU, and the promise that you can call me all sorts of names if I lose!
