A lot of things coming from Pullman that are just as noteworthy as they are newsworthy -- a strange way of putting it but definitely worth taking a little more time to remember than usual because change is in the air. If I remember correctly, the Cougs last year led the nation in passing yardage but were near the bottom in their rushing output (ranked 125th.)
Going the other way, their defensive points allowed were also tilted abruptly against them with an especially porous defensive secondary (ranked 124th) and an above average rushing defense (ranked 40th.) All in all their strengths and weaknesses have been clearly defined.
What's newsworthy here is the play of their defensive backfield so far this year. Greatly improved is the buzzword that was going around the practice field on a fairly regular basis. That's good news for the Cougar faithful being that in terms of team strengths and weaknesses, it is perhaps the greatest weakness that has hurt them the most. Mike Leach's first order of business last winter was to can his DC Mike Breske who's defensive backfield had just ONE (not a misprint... just ONE) interception in all of 2014, the worst in all CFB. His new guy is Alex Grinch who comes by way of Missouri where he specialized in coaching defensive backs. His style emphasizes takeaways which have been sorely absent in the Cougar's defensive game.
Couple the above with 5 returning starters on Leach's OL and things are starting to look interesting. Usually WSU tends to be a pretty scrappy bunch, certainly a pest to many who expected something easier than what they got (at least until they get themselves bombed out of existence.) Maybe this time around we can count on them to last a while and at least cover more than their share of pointspreads. To me that looks like it's worth remembering going forward.
Perhaps there has been a little too much attention paid to the Pac-12 South and not enough to the North. We expect more from Cal Bears and Jared Goff this year as the top QB in the Pac-12 North giving USC's Cody Kessler a run for the #1 QB spot in the conference. That is right up Cal HC's Sonny Dykes' alley. Now what about Mike Leach, another offensive-minded HC? (aka: air raid?) If all goes as expected, Leach's new QB, Luke Faulk looks rarin' to go and ready to play. In practice he has been taking snaps from under center about ¼ of the time which translates to a more aggressive running game with more angles for his running backs to hit the holes. With all 5 starters returning on his OL, let's see it.
