Bruce: It's so sad for me to see jai alai decline so badly. I'm with you as a huge fan of this once grand game. I miss the games, and from a unique perspective, as one that basically played at an AAA level, to put in in baseball terms.

As I understand it, now... only really Miami and Dania, others are pretty much BS operations for a couple of months a year...just to get slots/poker, right ?

I'd love to play recreationally, if I could.

Milford is now a Lowe's, Hartford is a Carmax, Bridgeport is a dog track, etc.

I have great memories of the game, knew many players.

people dont like losing money gambling, with the high takeout its almost assured

then with them questioning most missed shots they needed as being fixed against them ( not true, but these are very square gamblers) they inevitably stop showing up

That settles it...It's WED/DAY

are you kidding me? of course jai alai is fixed. I have seen millions of jai alai games. The guys that play this game are very good athletes. They could put a shot just about anywhere. How many times did you see a guy have the ball in his cesta and he just do a little turn of his wrist to have the ball drop out? However watch a regular average night game of Jai Alai and then go to the tournament of champions where that kinda stuff rarely happens. The tournament is when these guys are going all out and the top guys win and the payout is like 0.50 for a trifecta. If they didnt rig it guys like Joey, Michelena would win every game and no one would really win anything including the fronton. There is a HUGE difference between these two games and on an average Jai Alai night it is almost flat out blatantly obvious in their attempt at fixing the game.

Now? I dont know what is going on since I havent been to Jai Alai game in about 5 years but there is no doubt those players knew who was suppose to win and when.

Orlando jai alai is soon closing. The game is becoming extinct in the US. I think this only really leaves Miami and Dania.

Orlando Jai Alai, a Central Florida landmark since 1962, is shutting down.

Attendance has been shrinking at the fronton in recent years, and its manager is blaming greater competition and a stubborn county government.
"Business has been declining for years," said mutuels manager Howard Ostrom. "A lot of it has to do with at the present time, you're not a level playing field with the rest of Florida as far as gambling establishments."
Ostrom says the biggest craze for gamblers now is poker, but Seminole Count commissioners have banned Orlando Jai Alai and the Sanford-Orlando Kennel Club from holding card games.
"I sure as hell have resentment toward it. I've worked here a long time," Ostrom said. "You have off-shore boats, you have Indian casinos, internet cafes. None of which pay taxes to the state of Florida. And we pay heavy taxes and we have all sorts of regulations."
Orlando Jai Alai's boom days were in the 1970's and 80's. It's also played host to concerts, including Elvis Presley and U2.
"We've been a family owned business, a landmark, since 1962," Ostrom said. "Now it's all flushed down the drain."
The fronton also allows betting on horse racing displayed on video feeds.
Orlando Jai Alai will close on December 27th. 75 employees and 30 players will be out of work. Ostrom says they're not planning a big send-off because there's not enough time.

Holy crap. This thread made me look up to see if there was one near me. I've been wanting to watch this for awhile. Looks like I live a few minutes away from one in Texas. Texas Jai-alai...gonna have to check it out!

EDIT: Upon further research, it doesn't seem to exist even though it's supposed to open in 2009.

I hit a trifecta one night in Tampa, had the only ticket in the house, paid 1991.00, was 7-8-5

anyone who follows the game knows how hard that combo is to come in.....it went all the way around twice, then went to tiebreakers, got very lucky, but what a payout.......back then it was a weeknight, not a ton of people there, it was just the 2nd game of the night.....u could talk to the players it was so quiet, was no mystery i was the only one with a ticket...haah

i was just playing a part wheel, with the players i liked...never thinking that particular combo would come in....if i remember correct, the 7 and 8 were the 2 i liked best, so i was basically palying for one or the other to win it out.....i think the ticket was something like

7,8/2,3,7,8/1,2,3,5,7,8

it just happened to come in that way

That could have paid 10k back in the 80's.

I'd never bet those numbers with a tiny pool.

You have to adjust bets to the pool size, these days, and forget the nearly impossible combinations, in favor of more realistic tri's like:

853
532
641
216
741
etc.

this game is nuts i love watching it

It's much better live than on a monitor, it just doesn't transfer well to video, sort of like hockey.

Orlando got saved at the last minute, for now. I think Miami and Dania are the only year round frontons. A few run very brief seasons ( Ocala, Hamilton), just so they can have poker.

Plug your computer into a big screen , get an online account, and you will have a ball

It is better live, but its also fun to bet on live games at home

too bad this is virtually dead. It really is a lot of fun to bet on in person. and you dont have to risk much for your entertainment. $12 cost 4 team quinella box every game will give you a ton of action all night and you will hit some of them. maybe enough to go home ahead.

It's 10X better live, for a lot of reasons...

The court doesn't fit well to a TV screen

The camera work is amateurish

You need to hear the game also....the sound the pelota makes when it hits the frontis ( front wall), the players communicating with each other....

Best seat in the house costs about $1-2, will only be about 100-300 people there.

It used to be standing room only with like 5,000 + people there in the 70's, 80's.

It will never be like it was in like 1980, but still needs to be seen live to be appreciated.

I'd bet as small as possible on it, figure you will lose 20% of risked amount.

something like a $2 quinella, ( maybe 2-3) should be sufficient, do that for 10 games, you'll lose $4 in theory over time, no need to make it 6X that, when you're just checking it out, and you can't overcome the hold anyway.
