AUGUST 27TH PLAY OF THE WEEK

7k Cincinnati -1.5 +145 (SUPER EASY MEGA BLOWOUT WINNER 13-0)

I am going with the Reds in this one. DeSclafani has been very consistent, allowing three runs or less in all but two of his starts this season, so I am confident siding with him. Also Godley has not been good, posting an ERA near six at home this season, and he just conceded seven runs in his previous start, and the Reds score five runs off him last month so I think they will plate multiple runs against him again and notch the road victory.

AUGUST 27TH PLAY OF THE DAY

7k Cleveland -1.5 +126 (Lost)

You know it’s a tough game when you can’t find trends against the team you are wagering against, but I like the Indians still. Carrasco has been an absolute beast on the road. He’s 19-7 over his last 26 and has gone 10-2 on the road against winning teams. That’s very impressive and I’ll take him and the Indians on Saturday.

5k New York Mets -1.5 +115 (SUPER EASY BLOWOUT WINNER 12-1)

Hellickson has been outstanding as of late, posting a stifling 2.35 ERA over his last six starts, so he should be able to contain the Mets low scoring offense. Also Syndergaard has a 2.60 ERA at home this season and has only allowed three earned runs in 19.1 career innings pitched against the Phillies, so I am confident he can shut the Phillies down as runs will be at a premium in this one.

5k Washington -1.5 +120 (Lost)

The Rockies have been a sneaky team at times this year, but they did just get swept in Milwaukee and now will take on an angry Washington squad that lost three of four at home to the Orioles. The Rockies are not a good team on the road as their offense really struggles away from home and the Nationals have the offense to take care of the bad pitching that the Rockies have. De La Rosa has a 5.40 ERA on the road and while he is 3-0 in his career in this park, he does have a 4.70 ERA in those games. The Nats should give him his first loss in this park and it should be rather easy.

5k Toronto -1.5 -105 (Lost)

Santana has a good 2.77 ERA this season but is just 3-4 on the road. Stroman is 4-1 with a 4.73 ERA at home. So I’m sure you think I’m picking Minnesota? Sorry, the Twins’ lineup just isn’t in the same ballpark as Toronto’s. The Twins are also just 1-10 in their past 11 vs. teams with a winning record.

AUGUST 28TH PLAY OF THE DAY

7k Pittsburgh -127 (Easy Winner 3-1)

I am taking the Pirates in this one. Anderson has a 4.63 career ERA against Pittsburgh and the Pirates are hitting a combined .371 against him so they should be able to score some runs off him. Also Nova is coming off a brilliant complete game, and the Pirates have won all four games he has started since being acquired so I am confident siding with him. The Pirates are playing terrific baseball on the road right now and I think they collect another road victory in this one.

5k Miami Under 8.5 -104 (Easy Blowout Winner 4 Runs)

I like the Marlins and the under in this match up. Cashner has only allowed one run in each of his last two starts, plus he has a respectable 3.80 ERA over his last eight starts so I am confident he can contain down his former team who has scored three or fewer runs in four out of their last six games. Also, Perdomo has been better as of late so he shouldn’t get give up to many runs, but he does give up a ton of hits with as he has a .324 opponent batting average, and he also allows a lot of walks and a good hitting team like the Marlins will make him pay. I think the Marlins take this one in a lower scoring game.

5k Toronto -1.5 +105 (Winner 9-6)

The Blue Jays are in a fight for a playoff spot, so this is a team they can’t take lightly if they hope to stay in that battle. On Friday night they won by a score of 15-8 as this powerful offense really had a field day vs the Minnesota staff. Kyle Gibson is struggling right now and has not been very good on the road with a 5.21 ERA, and while Dickey has struggled in this series, he has been pitching better overall of late and should be able to hold this erratic Minnesota offense down. This one will not be pretty for the Twins.

5k Chicago Cubs -1.5 -101 (Lost)

This is a great, late August baseball game with two teams very likely to make the playoffs. The Cubs are a lock and even if the Giants catch the Dodgers, they will still likely make it as a wild card. Kenta Maeda has been great lately, but I’m going with Lester. He’s been doing it in big games for years and I think he gets it done here also. Let’s take the Cubs on the road. All the more reason to like the Cubs.

AUGUST 29th PLAY OF THE DAY

7k Toronto -140 ( Easy Blowout Winner 5-1)

Going with the Blue Jays here as they are the better team, and have the better starter on the mound. Wade Miley hasn’t really helped the O’s since being traded for and the Orioles staff as a who was crushed in the series vs the Yankees over the weekend. This Toronto offense ought to have as field day against Miley and the rest of the staff in this one as they pick up a huge road win.

5k Washington -1.5 -118 (Easy Blowout Winner 4-0)

I am taking the Nationals on the run line in this contest. Thompson has really struggled, surrendering 21 runs in his 19.1 innings pitched this season, and I think it could get ugly for him against this Washington offense. Also, Roark has totally dominated the Phillies this season, holding them to just two runs over 21 innings so he should shut them down again, plus the Nationals are 9-1 in Roark’s last ten road starts and I think Washington wins this one in a laughter.

5k Detroit -1.5 -105 (Lost 4-3)

James Shields numbers are astounding, and not in a good way. He’s given up an average of more than six earned runs in his last five starts. That just doesn’t happen to major league pitchers, much less someone who used to be really good. Meanwhile, Matt Boyd hasn’t lost in his last nine starts. This is an easy one.

3k Cincinnati +136 (Lost)

The Reds have moments where they show glimpses of a bright future. Sadly, those are normally wiped out by prolonged stretches of struggles. Anaheim’s season blew up almost immediately and the Angels can’t click off the last 30 plus games fast enough. Straily provides decent pitching and with DeSclafani, that may be a solid 1-2 punch going forward for the Reds. Shoemaker is up and down this year. In a minor upset, the Reds get the win in the opener of the set.

AUGUST 30TH PLAY OF THE DAY

7k Toronto -1.5 +113 (Lost)

Jimenez is 4-4 with a 6.67 ERA this year at home and as you can see the Jays have had his number. I think Happ might be coming back to earth a bit as well. The Jays have won seven of their past eight on Tuesday. The Orioles are 1-6 in their past seven against lefties.

5k Detroit Over 10 +107 (Easy Winner 12 Runs)

This is an easy one for me. I like the over. Ranuado has an ERA that shouldn’t be seen in the majors, and Norris has been very lucky to have a respectable ERA. I have a feeling that his other numbers will catch up with him, and I doubt he’ll have an ERA in the three’s after his next few starts. I think this game will have a lot of runs, and that those will start early. Let’s take the over on Tuesday.

5k Washington -1.5 -123 (Lost)

I am taking the Nationals on the run line in this one. Scherzer has held the Phillies to just six runs in 21 innings this season, and has a 2.36 career ERA against them, so I think it will be very difficult for Philadelphia to do much of anything against him. Also Eickoff has conceded 12 runs over his last three home starts, and he usually does not pitch past the sixth inning, so the Nationals will get chances at a bullpen with a 4.54 ERA which is one of the worst in the league, and I think they can tack on some more runs late in the game as well.

5k St Louis -1.5 +110 (Lost)

Yes, Adam Wainwright has struggled of late and on the road this year, but the Cardinals as a team are far better on the road than at home and Wainright does have very good numbers vs the Brewers in his career, going 13-8 with a 2.29 ERA in 26 starts vs them in his career. Wily Peralta has been pitching better of late, but he has never pitched well vs the Cards, going just 4-10 with a 5.02 ERA in 15 career starts vs them. The Cards need this game as they are fighting for a wildcard slot and they should get it behind a solid effort from Wainwright and an even better effort from their offense.

5k San Francisco Under 6.5 +112 (Lost 7 Runs)

The under seems an easy call even with that low total. Cueto is 6-2 with a 2.63 ERA at home, while Greinke is 6-1 with a 3.41 ERA on the road. The Diamondbacks are 5-2 in their past seven in game 1 of a series. The Giants are 3-10 in their past 13 series openers.

I am going with the Mets in this contest. Colon has a stifling 2.43 ERA in over his last three seasons (including this season) against Miami so he should be able to contain the Marlins offense. Also, the Mets have had success against Phelps, scoring five runs in 5.2 innings against him this season, and Phelps now has an abysmal 7.00 career ERA against New York, so I am confident the Mets offense, which has heated up, can do damage against him and get the win.

5k Detroit -122 (Winner 3-2)

I’m going to go ahead and call this pitching match up a wash. The Tigers are the better team and have more to play for, however. They are also at home and I think they win a close, hard fought game on Wednesday. Let’s take the Tigers and Verlander.

5k Cleveland Over 8 -105 (Easy Blowout Winner 12 Runs)

On paper, this one is a mismatch of epic proportions. The Indians are the AL Central leader while the Twins are the last place team. For that matter, Minnesota is the worst team in the entire American League. Kluber is rolling with wins in his last four starts and he’s unbeaten in his last nine. Dean is a rookie pitching on a bad team. He tends to give up runs in bunches, as evidenced by the total going over in five of his seven starts. Cleveland wins the game but if the line is too much, take the over here.

5k Cincinnati +135 (Lost)

Based on recent performance, the Angels have the advantage. The problem is, the Angels are Jekyll and Hyde. They’ve played well over the last week but they were dreadful the couple weeks before that. Throw in Nolasco’s inability to beat pretty much anyone this season and it’s tough to like Anaheim. The Angels are on a roll but Nolasco has as many wins in his last eight starts as you do. Finnegan pitches the Reds to a victory in the last of the series.

Perez just hasn’t been good of late but I think the runs will largely be kept down by both pitchers with the early start after a night game. But King Felix is clearly the superior pitcher. The Mariners are 5-1 in his past six against Texas.

The Miami Marlins are free-falling, while the New York Mets are fighting back into contention. Jacob deGrom hasn’t been strong in his last two, but I don’t trust Jose Urena one iota. I expect the Mets to put up some big early run totals against him.

SEPTEMBER 2ND PLAY OF THE DAY

7 Chicago Cubs -1.5 +100 (Lost 2-1)

I am going with the Cubs on the run line on this one. Lester has a terrific 2.67 career ERA against the Giants and he has a 2.01 ERA at Wrigley Field this season, plus he has a stifling 1.45 ERA over his last six starts so I think it will be tough for the struggling Giants to do much of anything against him. The deep Cubs offense should have no problem scoring some runs off the rookie Suarez, and I think they take this one easily behind another solid performance from Lester.

5k Chicago White Sox -104 (Easy Blowout Winner 11-4)

While it’s true that Gibson has pitched well against the White Sox in his career, one has to look at the big picture. The Twins came into the series losers of their last 13 games. Minnesota is in last place in all of the major leagues with 49 victories. Rodon struggled most of the year but seems to be on track at this point. The White Sox are a better team, though they don’t show it a fair amount of the time. Chicago gets the win in this one.

5k Texas -113 (Winner 10-8)

The Rangers have great success against the Astros, winning 11 of the 13 matchups this season. That’s a major reason they are atop the AL West. Texas is a combined 22-6 against Houston and Seattle. The Rangers can bury the Astros’ faint division hopes in this set. Houston is scrambling to chase down the last wild card spot in the AL. With as crowded a field as there is, it could go right down to the last day. Griffin pitches well against Houston in his career. That trend continues as the Rangers continue their dominance over the Astros in the opener.

5k St Louis -115 (Lost 2-3)

The Cardinals have been a far better road team than a home team this year and they are off a tough road loss at the Brewers, so they will look to get back on track vs a Cincinnati team that has thrown in the towel. Anthony Desclafani has been the Reds Best pitcher, but the Cards have seen him, while the Reds have not seen Alex Reyes, who has allowed just one ER in 14 innings pitched this year. He also has 17 Ks in those innings pitched. Look for the Cards to get back on track vs a bad Reds team here.
5k Kansas City -137 (Lost 7-8)

This is no doubt a battle between teams that may well be in the mix for the last wild card spot right down to the final days of the season. The Tigers have momentum with eight wins in their last 10. The Royals were sizzling in August before losses in their last two games. Sanchez is inconsistent, wild and undependable when it comes to providing a clutch outing. Duffy just took his first loss in his last 14 starts. He’s motivated and the Royals get the win in the opener.

SEPTEMBER 3RD PLAY OF THE WEEK

7K MINNESOTA -121 (BLOWOUT WINNER 11-3)

I am going with the Twins in this contest. Santiago looked great in his last start, and he has a sparkling 1.40 ERA in his career against the White Sox, so I am confident siding with him. Also Shields has been way to in consistent for my liking, plus he has a 6.79 ERA on the road and the Twins are hitting a combined .292 against him, so I think they can do enough offensively to get the victory in this one.

SEPTEMBER 3RD PLAY OF THE DAY

7K TORONTO -1.5 +111 (LOST)

I am going with the Blue Jays on the run line in this contest. Estrada has been incredible against the Rays, posting a minuscule 1.24 career ERA against them, plus he has a .192 opponent batting average on the road this season, so he should be able to contain the Rays offense. Also Snell surrendered five runs in just 1.2 innings to the Blue Jays earlier this season, and I think the Toronto offense will put some crooked numbers on the board against the rookie in this one.

OTHER SELECTIONS:

5K TEXAS +105 (SUPER BLOWOUT WINNER 12-4)

I am siding with the Rangers in this one. Keuchel has a 5.40 ERA in four starts against Texas this season, and he has been terrible on the road where he has a 5.42 ERA, and the Texas offense has been hot, so they should score some runs against him. Also, Holland has looked good lately, allowing just one run in each of his last two starts, plus he has a decent 3.83 ERA over his last three seasons against Houston so he should be able to hold their offense down, leading his team to victory.

5K COLORADO OVER 12.5 -120 (EASY WINNER 13 RUNS 7TH INNING)

Let’s look for plenty of runs in this one. Braden Shipley has not pitched well at all of late with a 7.27 ERA in his last three starts and that shouldn’t change here at Coors. Tyler Chatwood has a 5.43 ERA in his home starts this year and he allowed six ERs in six innings in his lone home start vs the Diamondbacks this year. That game produced 15 runs and this one could as well.

AUGUST 4TH PLAY OF THE DAY

7K ST LOUIS -1.5 +100 (EASY WINNER 5-2)

I am going with the Cardinals on the run line in this one. Martinez has been terrific, allowing only one run in each of his last three starts, and he has a 2.72 career ERA against the Reds so I am confident he can shut their offense down. Also I expect the Cardinals to get to the rookie Adleman who has allowed eight runs over his last two starts, and he won’t get deep into the game, meaning the Cardinals will get a few cracks at one of the worst bullpens in the Majors. I think St. Louis takes this one easily.

OTHER PLAYS:

5K ATLANTA -1.5 +114 (EASY WINNER 2-0)

I am siding with the Braves in this one. Teheran has been outstanding on the road this season where he has a 3.07 ERA with a stifling .203 opponent batting average, plus he has a 2.47 career ERA against them so I am content he can shut down the low scoring Phillies. Also Thompson has struggled big time this season, allowing 23 runs in 26.1 innings and the Braves offense has heated up with a few very hot hitters, so they should be able to do damage against the rookie.

5K HOUSTON +152 (EASY WINNER 7-6)

The Rangers have a comfortable lead in the AL West. As such, Texas can be conservative with Darvish in an effort to keep him healthy for the postseason. Houston is in a mode where wins are imperative to try and chase down the last wild card spot in the AL. McHugh pitches well against the Rangers in his career. That trend continues here as Houston finds a way to come up with a victory in the last game of the set.

5K BOSTON -123 (LOST 0-1)

Something about Oakland’s pitching has brought the best out of Boston’s bats this season. The Red Sox have scored at least 13 runs in each of the last four meetings entering Saturday. Graveman pitched well the last few months but the A’s don’t have much in the way of impact bats. Rodriguez is struggling with no wins in his last seven starts. Still, when you’re piling up runs, it’s easy to labor through five innings to get a win. Boston wins the last of the series here.

5K NY YANKEES OVER 9 +110 (LOST 7 RUNS)

The Yankees have the edge on the mound and their offense should be able to do some good damage vs Miley, who has really struggled since joining the Orioles. He also has terrible career numbers in this park and ve the Yankees. Look for the Yankees offense to have the better time in this one than the Orioles offense.
