At home, in his first game in charge, you know Mayo wants to shine. In front of the fans and most importantly owner Robert Kraft.
He will play this one to win.
And he couldn't ask for a better opponent to slaughter than the Carolina Panthers, who's preseason QB situation is a mess.
#1 draft pick Bryce Young will not play and Andy Dalton is out.
That means the only 2 QB's they have are rookie Jack Plummer out of Louisville and veteran Jake Luton. Plummer expected to play the first half, Luton the 2nd.
Luton just signed with the team on Monday, having spent some time on the practice squad last year.
Not exactly a rock solid QB rotation for the Panthers and new coach Dave Canales.
No problem for the Pats.
Mayo has stated all 4 QB's will play, meaning a series or two from Jacoby Brissett followed by the #3 pick in the draft Drake Maye.
The 2nd half will be led mostly by Bailey Zappe, who I feel will put up some points before rookie Joe Milton II mops up the last 2 possessions of the game.
Mayo will hang his hat on defense and you can believe they will be flying around to make a great first impression.
Bottom line: You replace a legend like Belichick, you have to get the first win out of the box.
With the QB situation of Carolina so bad, this has a double digit win for the home team.
Lay it and wait to collect.
