Thats a nice renedition by Jake Shimabukuro but lets not lose sight of the fact Jake can only play it because George Harrison wrote the song for The Beatles "White" album in the first place.

Here is an even better rendition performed whith vocals by Tom Petty when George Harrison was posthumously inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Watch for the solo riff by Prince at the end - it blows all other reneditions of the song away (including young Jake's very good solo you provided). Starts around 3:30 Minute mark.

Most of you guys that are criticizing the list are right - Rolling Stone took a lot of heat for putting out more of a popularity list than an actual talented guitarist list. I can't find out exactly how they came up with the list, probably just some staff writers collaborated.

I have visited that digitaldreamdoor.com site a bunch in the past and find their lists to be more accurate than any others I've read. My personal favorite is the "Top Rock Vocalists - Male" list...mainly because my all-time favorite vocalist Jeff Buckley took the #3 spot.

This could probably be another thread though.....top 10 of 100:

1. Freddie Mercury (Queen, Solo)
2.
Jackie Wilson
3. Jeff Buckley
4.
Sam Cooke
5. Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin, Solo)
6. Ian Gillan (Deep Purple, Solo)
7. Steve Perry (Journey, Solo)
8. Roy Orbison
9. Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Temple Of The Dog, Solo)
10.
Clyde McPhatter (Drifters, Dominoes, Solo)

Criteria: - These vocalists are rated by their ability, in their prime, for vocal Control, Power, Range, Articulation, Phrasing, use of Dynamics, Uniqueness, plus Impact & Influence.

Hendrix had great respect for Billy Gibbons of ZZTop who should be high on the list. How about John Mclaughlin or Yorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane fame? The list is a joke with Cobain on it.

Guitarist Billy Gibbons met his future manager, Waxahachie native Bill Mack Ham, backstage at a Doors concert in Houston in 1967. Gibbons' band at the time, the Moving Sidewalks, had a local hit with the song "99th Floor." They soon opened on the Doors' Texas tour. After later opening for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Hendrix named Gibbons his favorite guitar player during an appearance on "The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson."

other than being innovative, I never got Hendrix. Maybe I am too young, but by listening to his music, I always thought he was one of the sloppier guitarists.

SCT, a great collection of Hendrix bits is Jimi Hendrix - Blues

Available on CD...That was his core foundation...Later in his short career he got loose quite a bit with heavy use of amps and distortion....kind of wild jams.

But when he kept the basic blues tight, he was as good as any.

This was missing from the riff list. Check out Ted Nugent, especially about the 2 minute mark.

I actually have been to a Jimi Hendrix concert back in 1969 in Frankfurt Germany while I was stationed there. I also (believe it or not) saw Janis Joplin in the same concert hall a few months after seeing Hendrix. The place is still there and called the Jahrhunderthalle, seats about 2000 if I recall.

FWIW - Janis Joplin along with her new band at the time called The Kozmic Blues Band, put on a better show..

Sadly both were dead from overdoses within 2 years or so from those concerts.

Here is a post I made about this almost 4 years ago:
