Wil I have a buddy that was stationed in Germany about that time, gonna see him SuperBowl Sunday after 7 years.

Anyway he was drafted and after boot camp he got his orders to go to Germany and he was eleated but said he felt had to refraine as guy's around him had thier Veit Nam papers.

My question to you is how;d you end up both?

Take it you were a career man,i.e lifer?

Hendrix allegedly claimed Phil Keaggy was the best guitar player
in the world.

(ex glass harp virtuoso)

What I've heard also...

When Jimi Hendrix was asked "What does it feel like to be the greatest guitar player in the world?" he shrugged his shoulders and responded "I don't know, ask Phil Keaggy."

BadCo - not to hijack the thread but to answer your question.

Nope I was not a "lifer" (I use the term with respect) as career men were called back then and probably still are in all of the armed forces. I was not drafted either but instead joined while I was still in high school for three years in the US Army. I served the three years and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1970.

Back then the Army and Air Force had what was called the DEP or delayed enlistment plan so that high school seniors could join during the latter part of ther final year of high school a few months before graduation.

After graduation you had about 4 to 6 weeks to enjoy civilian life and then it was off to bootcamp and training school after that, but your "paydate" started back when you enlisted in April or May of your senior year in high school and not the day you reported to boot camp and were sworn in.. The Army called training school AIT if I remember right which stood for advaced infantry training.

The good thing about the DEP was you were able to (according to your aptitude test scores) choose a career field instead of what most draftees faced which was the real infantry and therefore became what was commonly referred to by all enlisted men back then as ground pounders. Being a ground pounder in VietNam in the late 60s was not a good job to put it mildly.

I choose aircraft maintenance and ended up in an Airborne unit and flew in and worked on helicopters, mostly Bell AH-1 Cobra Gunships in Vietnam and later in what was known back during the Cold War as "The Fulda Gap" in West Germany after my year in Nam was over. The Fulda Gap was named that because right in the middle of it was the West German city of Fulda and farther west was the industrial city of Frankfort.

The Fulda Gap is where Nato forces were massed to stop a back then highly feared Soviet Bloc forces tank invasion of Western Europe if WW3 ever broke out.

Luckily for humanity it never did and that gave us GI's a chance to get drunk and chase Frauliens whenever possible in the small cities, towns and villages in West Germany along the East German border. Today Germany is reunited into a single country but the Cold War was no joke for around 45 years, and was especially hot for a cold war during the Vietnam era.

A wekend trip into Frankfort and it's famous red light district called "The Kaiserstrasse" was what we all counted the days for at the front where with high powered binoculars you could see East German troops staring back at us across the border with their own high powered commie binocs.

Anyway, some of the trips into Frankfort revolved around seeing some big name entertainers at places like the Jahrhunderthalle which was always booking big names like the ones I mentioned in my earlier post..

We also were lucky to see some not quite as popular entertainers in our own base Enlisted Mens clubs. I remember seeing Lou Rawls and Triny Lopez (among others) at different times come to Germany to entertain the troops right on the various bases.

That list is more realistic. One that I lelt out in the first list and is very low in the second is Brian Setzer. I still don't get the fascination for Clapton, but that argument is for another day.

Wilheim, Duane Allman was more of a rythym guitarist. Dicky Betts was the lead.

Another mention would be Chris McCaffery and Chris Oliva of Savatage fame/TSO. McCaffery that is.

He shouldn't even be on the list.

Don't recall seeing Yngwie Malmsteen or John Petrucci on the RS list.

Malmsteen was a guitarist's guitarist's. I never got into his music but my musician buddies use to talk about him like he was a god, same with Vernon Reid

I dont know about that, didnt he have the lead on Whipping post? His slide guitar work is incredible though. He is in my personal top 10 but he doesn't belong at 2 of all time.

I loved claptons work from derek and the dominos, cream, and with John Mayall. Steppin' Out :103631605

Thats a nice renedition by Jake Shimabukuro but lets not lose sight of the fact Jake can only play it because George Harrison wrote the song for The Beatles "White" album in the first place.

Here is an even better rendition performed whith vocals by Tom Petty when George Harrison was posthumously inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Watch for the solo riff by Prince at the end - it blows all other reneditions of the song away (including young Jake's very good solo you provided). Starts around 3:30 Minute mark.
