Santana - Soul Sacrifice (Woodstock 1969).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnamP4-M9ko

On a very sad note bass player in this video David Brown (February 15, 1947--2000) was the primary bass guitar player for the band Santana from 1966 until 1976. He played with Carlos Santana at Woodstock in 1969. He played with the guitarist on several other dates and albums. With his Santana royalty income being usurped by his faimly, Mr. Brown spent the last years of his life as a homeless vagrant and succumbed in 2000 to liver and kidney failure.

SRV not high enough imo. Eric Clapton once stated he almost quit after listening to SRV because of how much better he was.

Duane Allman & BB over Clapton...Hmmm???...Kirk Hammet & Keith Richards at the 10/11 spot...Should be higher in my opinion...Brock is right Slash should be on that list?...Recently listening to some old GNR tracks and Slash brought the electric lightning...

My impression is that the list is based soley on artistic creativity and the impact it had on everyone at the respective time periods.

In Rolling stones defense, the list is actually pretty accurate.

As much as I love U2, Edge doesn't belong in the top 50.

Pat Metheny should be in the top 20.

well i may agree but what about the legions of guitar players since 1980 that have said that without eddie van halen they would have never picked up a guitar...many,many times i have seen that on tv and in print interviews....i have never seen one say they did for ry cooder

Lists like these always cause controversy over the criteria, if this list is based purely on guitar SKILL, then of course there are some I disagree with, however most of them factor in originality, influence, song writing ability, etc.

Some of the guitarists near the top, George Harrison, Keith Richards and Kurt Cobain especially, no where near the skill level of some of the players near the bottom, but have written iconic songs for their generations and influenced many by their playing style.

The list is for "Greatest" Guitar players, not most technically skilled. JMO

Ry Cooder is very overrated. He did some work with the Stones in the late 60s/early 70's. Known for using the slide guitar. I couldn't name a song of his that really stood out.

Slash should be in the top-20 for sure.
Eddie Van Halen in the 70's?
David Gilmour and Neil Young in the 80's?

Prince was a better guitarist than Joan Jett. And how doesn't Schenker, Satriani, or Kenny Wayne Shepherd not make it, especially Shepherd?

So how doesn't Prince make it? By this definition, he should be a lock.

Prince could have replaced a couple names on this list, sure, but I think most people think of Prince as a vocalist than a legendary guitar player, though he is very talented at both.

Some of Prince's material took on a very synthesized, electronic sound that didn't bring across a lot of guitar sound, may have hurt his chances at this list, who knows.

Still think his Superbowl performance was the greatest halftime show I've seen.

Was this a poll in America? Anyone who ever seen Rory Gallagher live would put him in the top 10, I would say No 2 behind Jimi. :drink:
