I'm pretty sure that at least 50 of the top 69 would laugh out loud if they were told that they were ranked ahead of EVH. The guy is a virtuoso - he pioneered a lot of the techniques still used by lead guitarists today. He even designed pieces of guitar hardware. I can't stand the music he makes, but he is easily top 10 material.

:think2: Odd list. By putting Jimi at #1, you indicate that you're going for the "greatest guitar hero/icon" angle. In that regard, the top 4 make sense. Robert Johnson was a huge influence on blues guitarists, but hardly a hero. Ry Cooder is pretty low-profile, Cobain was a musical idol more than a guitarist (acknowledged himself that he could barely play the instrument), Jack White at #17 is a joke (2003 bias, I suppose). I could go on and on.

These lists are always endlessly debatable, but this one is particularly retarded.

Number 51 in this poll was rated number 1 by the experts, at some guitar magazine. They said he was technically great and died young. Some people very high on this list are barely competent on the guitar.

Brian May at #39 is a joke, he's top 10, easily.

Duane Allman as no.2 is a complete joke.I loved his slide guitar but the man wasn't around long enough to be even in the top 10.

The list looked familiar and then I noticed that it's from 2003 . It was a complete farce then and nothing has changed since in that regard.

The best guitarist I ever saw Live was a guy named Kim Simmons of Savoy Brown at the Santa Cruz Civic, definitly a ledgend with me.

Eddie V in an interview said he went to a Derrick and the Dominoes (Clapton) concert at the Pasadena Civic and said thats when he wanted to be a rock star.

Michael Schenker and UFO never got to see him but hear he shreds live, never got to see Thin Lizzy either.

Was Niel Schon not on this list?

This list is crap. It is made up to stir a discussion. Eddie Van Halen #70 while Vernon Reid of Living Colour is #66 really jumps at me. Van Halen grinded out songs for decades. Living Colour was a one hit wonder with the song Cult Of Personality. Eddie Van Halen should be in the the top 15 at the least.

Greg Ginn of Black Flag making the list at all even though he is #99 is a joke. I like Black Flag but did they ever make a song longer then 3 minutes. Black Flag is a punk/skate rock band and it was all about the noise and not the melody.

Now that leads me to the who is missing. Ummm Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and Chuck Treece of Bad Brains and McRad. Check Treece is a pioneer in the music remixing songs for Sting and playing bass for Billy Joel too and one of the coolest guys on the planet. he is like Dave Grohl on guitar lending his work to everyone. I sent the guy an email telling him I love McRad and I can't find CD's anywhere and the guy asked for my address and mailed me off a McRad concert video and some various CD's from some of the bands he is working with and promoting. He mailed me that stuff while on the road at a gig. Not no marketing materials from his people that work for his fan club.

Anybody see the movie Crossroads with Steve Vai dueling the Karate Kid at the end for his soul? Yeah, most people didn't either. Awesome solos though...of course it is Steve Vai playing both parts
