In the lightweight class, European Champ Alexey Tischenko cruised to his third consecutive win. He could face another Cuban in the finals as Yordenis Ugas looks strong. Qing Hu of China was upset by France's Daouda Sow who faces Ugas next.

The Light Heavyweights set off some fireworks. England's Tony Jeffries dominated Hungary's Imre Szello and will face the pride of Ireland, Kenny Egan, in the semis. Egan had a dominant shutout win past overmatched Washington Silva of Brazil. If you remember I had Eleider Alvarez of Columbia and Egan as two longshots in this class hoping they would face off in the semis. Jeffries beat Alvarez on tiebreaker criteria in the second round, otherwise we would be looking at that scenario. The Jeffries-Egan fight should be a good one.

The other half of the bracket saw China's Xiaoping Zheng beat his overmatched opponent and in the second fight, Kazakhstan's Shynaliyev advanced when his opponent was DQ'ed for biting him in the third round. Shades of Iron Mike Tyson there.

Tomorrow features the flyweights and middleweights in their quarterfinal bouts. Then the fun begins with the semifinals in all eleven weight classes facing off.

The semifinals are set. Tomorrow will be a day off and all the semifinals will take place Friday with the finals split the following two days.

The flyweights rounded out their top four with Cuba's Andris Laffita and Russia's Georgy Balakshin moving on. These two will face off in the semis with the winner heavily favored to take the gold. Vincenzo Picardi of Italy and Thailand's Somjit Jongjohor will square off in the other semifinals.

The middleweights were the last weight class to settle their final four. Ireland's Darrin Sutherland didn't disappoint his raucous supporters with a dominating win. Great Britain's James Degale outclassed Bakhtiyar Artayev of Kazakhstan in what was an upset on paper. The Ireland-Britain showdown in the semifinals shold be good. Cuba earned yet another medal as Emilio Correa earned a workmanlike win over tough Elshod Rasulov of Uzbekistan. Correa will be a huge favorite over Vijender Kumar of India who earned his home country its first ever boxing medal.

The story of the tournament has to be Cuba's dominance so far. Not only will 8 of the 10 boxers they brought medal, but they have been winning by wide margins as well.

On a personal note, I managed to "jinx" the other two Cuban boxers as I had bets on them to win Gold.

I've made a few bets on the semifinal matchups.

I'll be back later with a more in-depth analysis of the weight classes.

Right now, I have 6 boxers still alive with 4 of them favored to win the Gold. Hoping at least 2 of them win, will be thrilled if 3 or more can.

I will tell you right now I made a small bet on Jeffries over Egan. It's the one bet I REALLY REALLY want to lose.

Most of the lines are pretty solid and there are a few I'd like to play but have futures so I'm either passing or hedging.

Semifinal plays:

J. Degale (GBR) +170 D. Sutherland (IRE) 1 unit- Middleweight class

This one should be closer to pick with a slight edge to Sutherland. Good value there as neither of these guys will be likely to run.

A. Vastine (FRA) -105 F. Diaz (DOM) 1 unit- Lt. Welter Class

IMO, Vastine should be closer to -200 than -100 in this fight Diaz hasn't beaten anyone he shouldn't have yet while Vastine was impressive beating the Mongolian fighter in the quarter. This is probably the best bet and I will have to go back and may add more if the line hasn't moved.

T.Jeffries (GBR) +210 K.Egan (IRE) .5 unit- Light Heavy Class

First let me say this is strictly a small hedge on my Egan future. I'll show a profit if Jeffries win, but will be very disappointed. I actually have less than a unit on this bet, more like .4 units. Egan should be the favorite but probably more in the -170/-180 range. I wouldn't recommend betting this unless you have the Egan lotto ticket future.

The other bet I would take if I didn't have it already in a future is:

E. Correa (CUB) in the Middlewieghts over V. Kumar (IND). He's bettable up to about -500 or -600 and would be shocked if he lost because of the styles.

I promise a rundown of the divisions with a few more leans after I eat.

GD, so would you recommend plays on Correa -425 and Vastine -110? And if so, how strongly do you feel about them on a scale of 1-5?

Touch me.

Yes and yes. 2 on a scale of 1 to 5. Only because the juice is steep on Correa. He may kill that poor Indian kid and never give him a chance to celebrate his medal.

Ok, time to break down the weight classes one-by-one. This will be a lot of reading, but it may help someone here so will be worth it.

Light Flyweights:

S. Zou(CHN) vs. P. Barnes (IRE)
Y. Hernandez (CUB) v. S. Purevdorj (MGL)

Zou was the big-time favorite of all the boxers to win the gold at the start of the competition. He certainly hasn't looked invincible though and barely squeaked out a tiebreaker second round win. That was over France's Nordine Oubaali who is certainly world class level, however. Paddy Barnes of Ireland opened at 100/1 and had a dream draw with a bye and two weaker opponents. Doubt he is up to Zou's level and the golden footed Chinese boxer should move on in this one.

Yampier Hernandez of Cuba has absolutely steamrolled all of his opponents including highly rated Georgiy Chygayev of the Ukraine in the second round. Hernandez was a juicy 50-1 when the tournament opened and no doubt his backers are salivating at the prospects of cashing. Serdamba Purevdorj of Mongolia was an even longer shot at 200-1. He has fought closer, more defensive fights. Smart money says the run ends for Purevdorj tonight.

Zou and Hernandez is the matchup all amatur boxing fans want to see. The current world champ versus the most dominant fighter of the games so far. The are both deserved favorites and I can't invision a scenario where they don't meet up for the gold medal.

Flyweights:

A. Laffita (CUB) vs. G. Balakshin (RUS)
V. Picardi (ITA) vs. S. Jongjohr (THA)

This was the weight class American Raushee Warren was supposed to run away with until he danced his way to a first round defeat. Balakshin in the reigning European champ but looked a little shaky in his quarterfinal win over little talked about Jitender Kumar of Inda. Laffita was one of the mystery Cubans that no one had seen much of. He has impressed with two easy wins so far. This is a tough bout to call and will depend on the judging. Rough and tumble Russia coud win out over stylish Cuba or vice-versa.

Vincenzo Picardi of Italy was completely out of gas in his last fight that he easily could have lost. The 80/1 cinderella shot is happy with a medal and likely will end his run here. Somjit Jongjohor of Thailand was highly rated coming in to the competition but has won three bouts in ugly fashion. Smart money says he wins ugly again.

Outside of Picardi, the other three fighters all could potentially win gold. Jongjohor should punch his ticket, but not much separates the other two. I'll take Balakshin in an ugly bout full of clenching and holding.
