Sam Snead collapsed down the stretch in more U. S. Opens than Phil Mickelson. In 1939, he needed a par 5 on the finishing hole to win, and made an 8. Some of his decisions in majors are golfing lore. :lolBIG:

How about Byron Nelson....11 straight tournaments in a row....no one, even Tiger will ever do that again...

You should look up stories about Finsterwald, Tony Lema, Chi Chi, Ray Floyd, and other oldtimers...some amazing stuff...

The oldtimers used to play for more money on Monday and Tuesday before the tournaments...

And John Daly couldn't hold a candle to some of those oldtimers...that's where the term 19th hole comes from...

The only major difference between Snead and Wood's cussing is that Sam didn't have a portable mic following him around the golf course. Do some checking on him and you'll find out he's noted for his '' blue " language. His dirty stories at the champions dinner at the Masters are legendary. And if you think Tommy Bolt didn't swear then you're really naive.

Golfer's cuss. End of story.

Sam Sneed won seven majors: three Masters, three PGA Championships and one British Open. In spite of his great achievements, his reputation has always been slightly tainted by his failure to win a U.S. Open.

I have nothing against Sneed but golf was very different in his prime years than it is today. Some of those fields he won all those tournements against were obscure at best.

Sneed won his 8th Greater Greensboro Open in 1965 at the age of 52 years and 10 months old.

Copy of actual $1200 check Sneed won for winning his first Greater Greennsboro Open in 1938.

Rocco Mediate's last win was at Greensboro in 2002.

2002 Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic Champion Rocco Mediate takes a moment to autograph a fan's golf bag. He took home a check for $684,000 for winning that event (his last tour win).

ya he is....want to know why they already discussed it today on cnbc...he SINGLE HANDEDLY CARRIES THE PGA on his shoulders....1 guy carries an entire professional league on his shoulder....

they are already talking about lessor ratings...events he was scheduled to appear in and sponsors now not getting their monies worth

the guy is a 1man wrecking ball...every other sport has someone else who carry some of the load...

i'll take it a step farther.. he is the greatest human being of alltime..

he could win the british open with no legs being pushed around in a wheelchair by stevie....

stevie would just need to be careful not to knock him over with one of those awesome high 5's he gives. you know , the one where they almost miss and hit each other in the face..

I want to say no but I have no argument so I went with yes.

If all the other sports were demolished and NBA/MLB/NFL peeps were forced to play golf, does Tiger still own the sport?

more than any of the other 4 major sports in the US (key: just because cricket/(football and yes this is our soccer)/etc aren't popular in the US doesn't mean they aren't world-wide sports) Tiger singlehandedly carries a league by himself....lets look at the other sports, shall we?

MLB: No single player is THAT identifiable (A-Rod, Pujols, Big Papi, Griffey Jr. are all identifiable, but not nearly the same level as Tiger...plus, with it being a team sport it does not single an individual like golf does)

NFL: Lots of well-known talents, like Brady, Mannings, Urlacher, etc etc but even if you remove any one of them, the league still functions as an entity and does not lose a fanbase/numbers stay about the same...

NHL: The remaining followers of the NHL wouldn't care if Hossa, Crosby, Ovechkin, etc weren't playing, they still would enjoy the game...while Crosby/Ovechkin (sry for butchering his name) weren't there, casual fans may leave, but the core would remain...no one nearly as important here in their sport more than Tiger

NBA: Lebron, Chris Paul, Amare, T-Mac, Big 3 (KG, R. Allen, The Truth), Kobe, Shaq....you get the idea...even with any of these players (including PLENTY I HAVE LEFT OFF, not a slight to any of them these just popped into my head) the league as a whole wouldn't drop drastically...yea Lebron, Kobe, and perhaps C. Paul would have more influence than some others, but you all get the idea....

and just to throw it out there, NASCAR (quickly rising in popularity overall in US, i believe much moreso now than hockey)...remove Dale Jr, arguably the most identifiable man in the sport, and again, the fan base doesn't change/sponsors find other players.....NOW....

focus: without Tiger, PGA loses an enormous amount of casual fans, as well as a ton of sponsorships who are looking to reach the younger crowd....with Tiger gone for the rest of the year, I think it is safe to say we will see a significant drop-off of ratings and perhaps endorsements within the sport (hard to gauge those numbers, as they are probably hard to obtain anyways)....in conclusion of my massive ramblings, I do believe Tiger is among the greatest, IF NOT THE GREATEST, at what he does in sports history...just my 2 cents :)

Hey Chop, off topic but have you heard from our favorite Elvis coin peddling guy about us getting paid? Excuse after excuse here, and finally reamed him and haven't heard back since.

Freedman.

There is more than 3 sports in the world. There is a reason American sports get worse by the year. What a toilet this country is.
