BQH: And Weis is yet to beat BC either. Year 5 is put up or shut up for Weis. No excuses.

If Notre Dame loses at home to a Boston College team that is picked to finish near the bottom of the ACC Atlantic and will have to claw it's way into a minor bowl game, Weis should be fired. The Irish should win that game by 17+ points.

BQH: I have had that game circled since February.

Bowl Championship Series presidents have rejected the Mountain West Conference's playoff plan.
The MWC proposed an eight-team playoff system that would allow greater access to the national championship game to teams outside the six most powerful leagues. The BCS presidential oversight committee rejected the concept during a teleconference on Wednesday.
"There was no overall support for the proposal, although some conferences were interested in considering certain elements of it in the future -- particularly those related to revenue, access and governance of the BCS arrangement," said University of Oregon president David Frohnmayer, the outgoing committee chairman, in a statement.
Frohnmayer added that all 10 conferences and Notre Dame generated reports that backed the same conclusion: They want to retain the current postseason format and comply with the current television contract.
"I believe we all agree that no system will ever be considered perfect, particularly by those conferences and institutions whose teams are not chosen in any particular year," Frohnmayer said. "But the BCS is the best postseason arrangement that has ever existed in college football. I say that after reviewing the matter from all standpoints, including student-athlete welfare, fan enjoyment, the academic calendar, the significance of the regular season, preservation of the bowl system that benefits a broad base of universities, and business.

"In the last six years, I've read pundits, heard the pronouncements of broadcasters and collected several cubic feet of e-mail printouts from advocates of an NFL-style playoff system. Even those that go beyond sound bite certitude share two intertwined and fatal deficiencies: They disrespect our academic calendars and they utterly lack a business plan."

Now there is a real shocker. A new contract with ESPN starts in 2010. Nothing will be done for 5 years, and I doubt if any changes will occur after that period of time is over. We are stuck with no true NC for most of that time period. How many times will we end up with two BCS teams that go undefeated, and no others? Last year we had two FBS undefeated teams, (Boise State adnd Utah) and neither one made it to the big dance. It is aparent that the only chance we have of getting a true chamion is to have two BCS Conference teams, and ONLY two, go undereated. The last time that happened was in '05, when Texas defeated USC. Even in '04, when USC defeated Oklahoma, Auburn was also undefeated.

I have heard of the expression "if it ain't broke don't fix it." The NCAA has now elevated an expression into a platitude "If it is broke, good enough for us." It is all about money and the president and athletic directors are thumbing their noses at the sources of all the money, us. Maybe Obama will send them bailout money and that won't be an issue anymore. Pathetic.

Another Tidbit

I just read where LY in a homegame beset by a downpour, Navy beat SMU 34-7. What I did not know until I just read it was that Navy did not attempt a single pass in that game becoming the first team in 11 years to do so (Ohio U in 1997 against Akron.) That is truly remarkable by any standards.

Posted by ESPN.com's Graham Watson Just a few days after Air Force coach Troy Calhoun commented the BCS was more or less un-American, he said he was done thinking about the BCS and its control over the way college football chooses a national champion.
"Frankly, it's not something that takes a whole lot of your time because it can't," Calhoun said. "You've got so much to do in terms of coaching and recruiting. [A change in the BCS] is something that you'd like to see happen, but at the same time here were completely dedicated to our guys and that's where our focus better be.
"The thing is, there really is a conduit to the BCS within the Mountain West. You run the table in the Mountain West Conference, you win 11 football games, you run the table in the conference and you're going to play in a BCS bowl game. I think that's pretty solid."
Although the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee shot down the Mountain West's proposal for BCS reform last Wednesday, the conference is not giving up its fight. Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson said in a statement last week that he'll take comments about the proposal back to the conference's board of directors and go from there.
"The Mountain West appreciates the thorough review that each conference gave our reform proposal," Thompson said last Thursday. "However, the MWC continues to believe that there are fundamental flaws in the BCS system that need to be addressed. We will take yesterday's action under advisement and consider our next steps."
Calhoun said he's happy that the conference hasn't given up its fight for BCS equality because he believes that giving everyone a chance at the title is the only fair way to choose a champion.
"You'd like to see it play out," Calhoun said. "If Davidson's got a chance at basketball when they have a really good team and be able to make a run all the way to the final eight or George Mason's got a really good basketball team and they're able to pursue a championship and make it to the Final Four in basketball, or if Rice is able to make it to the College World Series in baseball. Those are opportunities that are available and I think it's OK to allow everybody to go pursue a national championship."

2008 Dunkel ratings

I thought I would post the final Dunkel ratings for 2008. There are a lot of question marks in a lot of peoples minds about opening odds on week one.
This will show you how each team stood at the end of 2008 and you can arbitrarily adjust the ratings as you see fit to come up with estimates on 2009 lines.

Final 2008: Gators Take 2nd Title in 3 Years

It wasn't the high-scoring affair that was predicted, but Florida managed two goal-line stands and enough offense from Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin to beat Oklahoma (24-14) and take their second title in three years. Tebow shook off two early interceptions and dominated the fourth quarter to become just the fifth player since 1950 to win two national championships and a Heisman Trophy. Here are the final 2008 rankings.

Fyi

I am finding rosters and depth charts on some Official University Athletic sites that I could not find anywhere else. You can find some articles on those sites including stuff like video of spring practices, video interviews with players and coaches, and some insight you may not find on the other venues. Good time to browse.

Diversions

Sorry for the diversion but I will do almost anything to get on BS's ignore list.

The whole point of my discourse with him was to show what the slightest bit of research can do to give credibility to what you bring to this forum.
More than anything it is about credibility. He obviously could not win his case with facts or figures so he resorts to name calling, etc. When he said he does not have to prove himself on this forum I do not think that gives him the right to not be held accountable for what he says and when confronted to back up what he says with facts and figures. We all have opinions and there is a place for that on here too. But when you are asked to back up what you say and can't and you resort to name callling, profanity, and story telling instead it just goes downhill from there. I did not agree with his comments about those two coaches as did others on here. He should be held accountable for what he says just like everyone else on here does. I have never heard a lawyer make his case by starting out saying, "Once upon a time I met a guy on the golf course, are you kidding me.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—Texas linebacker Sergio Kindle was treated for a concussion after crashing his car into an Austin apartment building last week while he was either sending or receiving a text message, his attorney said Monday.
Kindle’s attorney, Brian Roark, said Kindle lost control of the car on June 24 while looking at the message.
“It was probably something he should not have been doing,” Roark said.
The crash caused about $8,700 damage and no one inside was hurt. After the crash, Kindle pushed the car back into the street and went home. He was checked by team doctors and told he had a concussion but did not have to be hospitalized.
University spokesman John Bianco said Kindle told his coaches about the accident the next morning.

“We’re glad nobody else was hurt and he’s going to be fine,” Bianco said.
Police Cpl. Scott Perry said police are still investigating but no charges have been filed. Perry said police have not talked to Kindle or Roark.
Because Kindle hit a stationary object and did not injure anyone else, he is only required to file a report with the Texas Department of Transportation, Roark said, adding he planned to file it as early as Monday.
Roark said Kindle would pay for the damages himself or through insurance if it is covered.
Kindle, a senior from Dallas, had 10 sacks last season. In 2007, he missed the first three games while serving a suspension for a drunken driving arrest.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP)—Arkansas linebacker Khiry Battle has been dismissed from the team after a weekend arrest on a charge of driving under the influence.
Coach Bobby Petrino announced Battle’s dismissal Monday, saying only that he’d violated team rules.
The 20-year-old Battle was arrested early Sunday on a charge of misdemeanor DUI. Police say Battle failed a field sobriety test and refused to take a breath alcohol test, leading to a charge of violating the state’s implied consent law.
On May 6, Battle was arrested after an incident in which a background check revealed he had an arrest warrant for failure to appear for a careless driving ticket.
Battle played in 10 games last season as a freshman and made five tackles.

NC State linebacker Nate Irving in good condition after Sunday car crash

By Associated Press
2:14 PM EDT, June 29, 2009

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State linebacker Nate Irving is recovering from surgery after being hurt in a car crash.

A WakeMed Trauma Center spokeswoman said Irving was in good condition Monday after surgery Sunday night. Irving was hospitalized with a broken leg and a collapsed lung after running his vehicle off the road at 4:40 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 40 in Johnston County.

State troopers think Irving might have fallen asleep at the wheel before crashing into two trees. Irving has been charged with careless and reckless driving.

It's unknown if Irving will be able to play this season. The junior was an honorable mention all-Atlantic Coast Conference player last year despite missing one-third of the season because of injuries.

That kind of stuff just gets to you. And more stuff like it will happen over the next couple of months. I hope he recovers well and does not try to rush his return too quickly. I had a friend who went down to Texas to be a graduate asst for Abe Lemons (basketball coaching legend) and he fell asleep at the wheel (no drinking involved) and walked away unharmed.

How is my adopted team doing down there?

The recruitment of the 2009 class is finally coming to a halt as the dog days of summer approach. The last elite prospect standing, Lance Stephenson opted for Cincinnati, but his star power was not quite enough to squeeze the Bearcats' recruiting class into the national top 25 rankings.
The late addition of Lamont Jones and Derrick Williams to Arizona did, however, push the Wildcats all the way to No. 12. Sean Miller came to a program without a recruit and in impressive fashion assembled a talented five-man class.
The Big 12 leads the way amongst conferences with six teams in the top 25. The ACC and Big East are represented by five teams each. The Pac-10 follows with four teams, and then the Big Ten with three teams and SEC with two teams.

PF Derrick Williams

Newly hired head coach Sean Miller did some fast recruiting work, amassing a five-man class with three four-star prospects. And Natyazhko will be counted upon early to provide a physical presence inside. Three-star forwards Parrom and Williams round out the class.

Box Scores - what do they tell us

I was in my archives and was taking a look at some old box scores I had pulled up. It is amazing how some games turn out and sometimes when you see a box just the final score you don't really get a good read on how it all came down. That is why I often check out the box scores. But there is one game, a bowl game, in which the box score just knocks me out. The outcome of this particular game was 38-3. You would think total domination right. Now the winning team had 19 first downs, the losing team had 15. The winning team had 324 total yards, the losing team had 314 total yards. The winning team had no fumbles lost and threw no interceptions, the losing team lost two fumbles and threw one interception. Now that tells us a little more. Still 38-3. The team that lost came into the game avg. 24 ppg on offense and scored their three pts in the first qtr and did not score again. The team that won punted 4 times, the team that lost punted 3 times. The winning team had 20 more yards in penalties than the loser. 38-3 sounds impossible but it was LSU 38, Georgia Tech 3.

I guess that is a testimony to the belief that if you have enough time to prepare for the flex bone and have the athletes you can defeat it, knowing full well that if you do the flex bone is not designed to be effective when coming from behind. What LSU did was hold GT to converting only 3 of 15 third downs, and only 2 of 6 fourth downs (total - 5/21 or 24%).

My point is if you are looking over last years scores you might also look at the box scores if something looks out of place or to get a better picture of what came down. Now if I read this correctly GT was a 4 pt favorite going into that game. I am not sure what this game tells you but did the score really tell the story. The flex bone and teams that use it are difficult to prepare for on one weeks notice. LSU came into that game giving up 24.2ppg and GT came into that game giving up 20.3ppg. I am sure of one thing if LSU had only one week to prepare the outcome would have probably been different.

I am not much on bowl carryovers but a lot of people are going to casually look at that bowl game and think that LSU took GT apart. Did they? The turnovers played a part but LSU did not have the kind of yardage that you associate 38 pts with. GT came into that game avging 372 typg and were only outgained by 10 tyds. I strongly suggest checking the box scores and not just judging based soley on final scores.

Basketball has been very good to me

Yes I posted that by mistake answered the phone and when I got back it was too late to erase it. I better check and see if I put a football post on the basketball thread. Oh well I am off for four days who cares.
