Sam Bradford

This is obviously a homer biased article written about Sam Bradford. I am putting in on here because I do not think a lot of people realize the kind of quality student/athlete he is. He, McCoy, and Tebow are all leaders and do it their own unique way. They are all highly motivated athletes and all make their teams better for having them.

OU's QB Sam Bradford a true leader
QB takes care of his own business, looks out for teammates

NORMAN — The December morning after Sam Bradford returned to campus from New York, a Heisman Trophy in tow, he stopped by to chat with associate athletic director Gerald Gurney, who runs OU’s student life center and academic services.

Bradford’s first question was how his offensive line did academically. Did Bradford need to talk to anyone?
A picture of leadership. Yes, a quarterback is expected to command the huddle and walk tall in the locker room and keep his nose clean. But a quarterback who plays truant officer and academic monitor is working overtime.
"He’ll go and drag ’em in here,” Gurney said. "His teammates, if they’re not doing something correctly, he’ll personally make sure they’re handling their responsibilities.”
Teams that self-police are priceless to their coaches. More than 30 years after the Selmons’ era at OU, stories of their leadership still ring around the program. Lucious standing up on a rowdy bus and ordering his teammates to put on their game faces. Lee Roy and Dewey quietly taking a malcontent to the bus station, letting him know his services no longer were needed.
Bradford has taken on such a role, a guy who not only takes care of his own business but looks out for his teammates.
"I just kind of try to lead by example,” Bradford said, downplaying his actions. "I value my education. When guys see that, they may take their schoolwork more seriously.”
Bradford values his education all right. He’s scheduled to graduate in 3 1/2 years with a finance degree; he’s made one grade less than an A, a B in Calculus II.
"I can count on one hand, in 29 years, the numbers of student-athletes who truly are scholars,” Gurney said. "Sam is one of them.
"He’s a dream. He’s a dream come true for me. Not just what he seems in terms of academics, but the expectations he has of bringing everyone else up with him.”
That’s a tight rope to walk, teammate and uber-captain, but Bradford seems to walk it straight.
"He’s a guy’s guy,” Bob Stoops said. "Meaning he doesn’t ever want to be, and doesn’t act like, he’s any different. And the players know that. He likes being one of the guys in the locker room.
"He’ll encourage ’em. ‘Come on, man. We need you.’ But he does it in a way guys respect.”
Programs like Oklahoma ask much out of their quarterbacks. A physical commitment. A time commitment. A performance requirement.
Every once in a while, a quarterback goes beyond those responsibilities. A Jack Mildren. A J.C. Watts. A guy committed not only to excellence in himself, but excellence in his teammates.
"Sam’s so unusual,” Gurney said. "If you can imagine how many expectations we place on the quarterback. And with the type of scholar-athlete he is, they’d be happy with just that.
"But he takes on a leadership role. He brings everyone else around him to a higher level.” Berry Tramel: 405-760-8080; Berry Tramel can be heard Monday through Friday from 4:40-5:20 p.m. on The Sports Animal radio network, including AM-640 and FM-98.1.

I am posting this because I agree that LSU will be a very improved team this year both offensively and defensively.

It would be premature to anoint LSU's Jordan Jefferson as the next up-and-coming star quarterback in the SEC.
He's started all of two games.
<TABLE cellSpacing=4 cellPadding=0 width=300 align=right border=0><TBODY><TR><TD> </TD><TD>

</TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD><TD align=left>Crystal LoGiudice/US Presswire</TD></TR><TR><TD> </TD><TD align=left>Jordan Jefferson started two games for the Tigers last season.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>But as the Tigers do their best to forget about their nightmarish problems at quarterback a year ago, Jefferson has given everybody on the Bayou hope that he's the guy who can put the sizzle and the consistency back into the offense.
"The thing about Jordan is that he's in control back there," LSU senior running back Charles Scott said this spring after watching Jefferson separate himself from the rest of the pack. "He knows where to go with the ball, and he gets the ball in the hands of the playmakers.
"And when there's a play to be made by him, he makes it ... either with his arm or his legs. He's a whole different quarterback than the young, true freshman we saw last season."
But, hey, that's what experience will do for you.
Jefferson started the last two games a year ago, including the Chick-fil-A Bowl rout of Georgia Tech.
The practice time leading up to the bowl game was invaluable for Jefferson because it was his show. He knew it, and so did the rest of the team.
He responded by hitting the first nine passes in that game and delivered a steady performance in winning Offensive MVP honors.
In the spring -- his first spring practice -- he took another step. And now with voluntary summer workouts going strong, it's Jefferson chance to further solidify his hold on the starting job entering preseason practice.
"Any time you're in the offense over time, things become a little more comfortable," LSU coach Les Miles said.
The 6-foot-4, 209-pound Jefferson is more than just comfortable. He has the kind of versatility offensive coordinator Gary Crowton loves in a quarterback.
While he might not be as dynamic in the open field as freshman quarterback Russell Shepard, Jefferson is fast enough to hurt teams with his scrambling ability.
Crowton will have more flexibility to call plays because defenses will have to respect Jefferson's dual-threat capabilities.
"I gained a lot from last season," said Jefferson, who appeared to be headed for a redshirt year after hurting his shoulder against Mississippi State. "You realize how certain plays work and why they work against certain defenses."
Jefferson has seemed to embrace the competition, too. The fact that the highly touted Shepard was on campus this spring and going through practice only seemed to drive Jefferson that much harder.
"It's all about who works the hardest and who plays the best," Jefferson said. "We all want the same thing, and we all push each other."

How can LSU do anything but improve after that disaster that was last season. The question is how much improvment. The answer is not enough to win the SEC West, not with the schedule that they have. Going to 'Bama, Ole Miss and Georgia, plus hosting Florida is just too much for them this year. I think that this is a team that will definately be a major threat to win it all next year. They are projected to start only 8 seniors this year.

With the recruiting they have done recently about all they need is a solid QB and for the Defense to step up. The addition of DC John Chavis and Jefferson stepping up could be the answers. I would not be surprised to see them be in the BCSNC. They went 8-5 LY which is totally unacceptable in Baton Rouge. The worst part of last season was getting beat by Florida 51-21 , Georgia 52-38, and Ole Miss 31-13. They have a tough schedule, but then again they always have a tough schedule because they are in the SEC. The amount of seniors starting is not as important to a team like LSU, look how young Florida was LY. Miles is a scarey, almost cynically motivated coach who will never let his team forget those three defeats I just mentioned. This may prove to be a very interesting year in the SEC. Jefferson will have a lot to do with it one way or another.

Red zone offenses

I try to pay attention to how teams do in the redzone, how they seal the deal so to speak. This posting is from the NCAA stats:

Red Zone Offenses - Comments

Since these are LY's stats these may or may not reflect how all of these teams will perform in 2009. But you can pick out some that may show some numbers that may go up or down based on the returning players, coaching stability (systems), and their strength of schedule this year as opposed to LY's.

Arizona was #6 scoring 55 of 60 trips to the redzone. Will a new running QB help or hinder those impressive stats.
Utah was #8 and they lose a lot of players.
Surprisingly Syraccuse Scored 21 out of 23 trips to the redzone but unfortunately that is not very many trips, way below average.

But if you take a look at the bottom of the back you might note:

Auburn - scored on 20 of 35 trips to the redzone. They should defintely improve on that.

Interestingly enough, if you take all 120 teams into account, it appears most teams score more than 70% of the time that they get to the redzone, with more than half of them over 80% of the time. 16 teams had a 90% success in the redzone. If you look thru the list you might pick out some teams you think might improve not only on their percentage but on the number of trips they make to the redzone (like Auburn).

Georgia Tech

I have hit on the fact that this year Georgia Tech plays straight thru the season without a week off. This has to take a toll on a team that relies on the run/option. On Sept 5 they host Jacksonville then turn right around and host Clemson on Sept 10 (thurs), then play at Mia Fl on Sept 17. This could be a crucial period for them right off the bat.
I went over their schedule and scores from LY and I noticed something that might be meaningful. GT was 9-4 LY. In every loss they scored 17 or less points (17, 17, 7, 3). They beat BC 19-16. You might keep this in mind as the season progresses because with no week off 17 might be a very signifiant number both ATS and on over/unders.

Also the type of offense they run is inefffective if they ever get down by two or more TD's. That may or may not be a factor. They lost to N. Car 28-7 and that may sound decisive but I sugget you check out that box score. That has revenge/circle game written all over it. They play NC at NC in week 4 following their trip to Mia Fl which I think they will lose. They should be in an extremely ugly mood when they arrive in Chapel Hill.
The game at Mia is a revenge game for Mia. I would think that even if GT lost to both Clemson and Mia the NC game would become even more important and certainly within their capability to win even without the added possible scenarios. This is all a ways off but I am always looking for an edge. I plan to keep an eye on GT in week one and two and maybe getting involved in game three and/or four.

Actually, Ga. Tech gets a week off before they play Georgia. My schedule shows them at Duke on 11/14, then hosting UGA on the 28th. They also get 9 days off between the @Miami game and their home game against UNC, NOT an away game. Check your facts Russ. You were a little off with your last post.

In my first post I was correct, they play 11 straight without a break, then the break before Georgia. My emphasis is really on the Clemson, Mia, NC (which they play at GT not NC). 11 games with no break is really unusual and it will take a toll with the kind of plays they run. If they were to beat Clemson, Mia and NC that would be something. 18 starters returning puts them in much better shape than most teams, but the schedule is not in their favor. The teams they played LY ranked their schedule #54 and this year it ranks at #23 based on wins and losses ly by this yrs opponents.
They do have a couple of extra days before Maimi but not a week off as I stated.

Gold Sheet 2009 College & Pro Preview

This is available on the goldsheet online, goldsheet@goldsheet.com or just google goldsheet
You just give them your e-mail and they send it to be downloaded.

(2) 8 1/2" x 11" pages for each team and very nicely done. Very nice of them to give them away. I am always plugging Steele but the Gold Sheet has a nice site and I am going to be checking them out.

Gold Sheet Onlilne Site

I have been going over this site the last couple of days. They have a lot of good ATS info. They also track injuries, etc so they should provide a good source during the season also. This site is new to me but one I will monitor from now on regularly. Just thought I would pass that along.

My feeling is you can use the info or think it is useless, whichever you prefer without bashing the guy. I have been betting these College games for right at 10 years but admittedly still consider myself a novice and am working at improving each year. I handicap much the same way with a lot of preparation going into what makes a team different from the year before and trying to take advantage of that. That is why the charts are extremely useful to me to have all that information in one place. Is it the whole story? Of course not, but a huge piece of the puzzle.

For the past month I have been pouring over Steele, Lindey's, CFN Scout and Rivals to gather info and began reading posts in this forum, in particular this thread from the beginning. Not to rehash the argument about use of w/l, but to me I use it as simply a tool, not as an indicator of my success. Last year in week one I went 8-2 ATS. Pretty good huh? I finished the week 1 unit up though. Not that good for going 8-2. The reason was I put 4 units on the Vols at UCLA. (At least I got a lot of it back fading them against BYU the nest week) I used that experience as a lesson and vowed to only flat bet this year. Not knocking Russ or anyone that bets a lot of parlays, but for the most part in my experience thy have killed me so I am adjusting my game and staying away from them, or at least hopefully so. The point is what works for someone may not work across the board, the way someone handicaps may be different from your own. I think the cool think about this board for me is to learn more not only about games in particular, but for me to use in my quest to improve my game in general.

Shit you not, I bet if I had to guess my record the last 5 years in week one I would say it would be something like 50-7. For the first complete month, probably around 60%. For the rest of the season well south of 40%. Maybe it is because a higher percentage of favorites win in week one. Maybe it is because I have more time per game to research each game I bet. Maybe its because I lose focus and do not make adjustments. It could be a combination. I value the input of a lot of people on the board and will admit after a string towards the middle of last season where I was something like 4-15, I simply stopped capping and tailed Sooner BS. He won a few games for me and more importantly I think I saw the reason he was playing the games. Sorta like teaching a man to fish, not just buying him a fish n' chips platter.

My plan this year is to hit Week one hard, being it is traditionally my best week. I will flat bet at 3.5 times my average unit and then lower my unit to 2 times in week 2 and back to single units for the rest of the season.

I am encouraged because some of the games I am eying have been mentioned already by some of you. They are NC Sate, Minny, Baylor, Illinois and UTEP along with my Kentucky Wildcats (admitted homer, but if the line is right I will add it).

I am not one to clog up message boards, but wanted to say thanks for the work done so far. I appreciate it. If I have anything valuable to add I will chime in. I look forward to being around the forum with many of you more from now through the season[/FONT]

If you have a computer that can handle all of the information for the past 5 years, you should download the information about every college team, and cut your workload down when it comes down to crunch time. A lot of this information can be found in Lawrences publication, but no records of college W/L versus the Total line. That information is available for the pro teams. A very well known tout once told me that the more work you do in Febuary, when the season is over and there is a lot of downtime, the less you will have to do when the season starts. My busiest months are Febuary, March and April. By time May rolls around, most of the work that I can do for the season is already done. I hae preliminary lines for every game of the year, both college and pro. This is the way they do it at LVSC.

BQH:

You can find a lot of those logs on the goldsheet.com
They have ATS going back to 2000 I know for sure. You can also go to situations for all 120 teams and still go back up to 20 games. When you get the time you should check that site out. Also you can pick up a lot of data at the NCAA football statistics site (just google it). It is all out there believe me. I am sure that is where all the trend plays come from though and those don't influence me too much. Good luck.

The only returning starter on the offensive line is left tackle Matt Reynolds. The four departed starters – Dallas Reynolds, David Oswald, Travis Bright and Ray Feinga – combined to make 154 career starts. This group must develop quickly so a wealth of skill-position talent, such as quarterback Max Hall, tight end Dennis Pitta and running back Harvey Unga, can thrive.
Central Michigan: Can the offensive line hold up? The Chippewas figure to start a redshirt freshman at left tackle (Jake Olson) and a sophomore who played tight end last fall at right tackle (Rocky Weaver). If that isn't concern enough, depth across the board is dicey. Entering camp, none of the offensive line backups will have played in more than one career game.
Navy: Who will emerge at slotback and fullback? The Middies lost slotback Shun White and fullback Eric Kettani. Bobby Doyle and Cory Finnerty played last season at slotback, but they saw limited action. Sophomore Marcus Curry has a chance to be a 1,000-yard rusher but still has to prove it. Fellow sophomore Alex Teich will be the fullback but, like Curry, has lots to prove.
Southern Miss: Can WR DeAndre Brown regain his form after a serious injury? He suffered a broken leg in the New Orleans Bowl last season, suffering a mid-shaft fracture of the left tibia. Still, Brown has been given the go-ahead to hit the field in August. He was one of the nation's top freshman wide receivers last season, catching 67 passes for 1,117 yards and 12 touchdowns. If he's healthy, he provides quarterback Austin Davis with a go-to guy and a big-play threat. If Brown is hobbled, the passing attack will suffer.
TCU: Can the defense continue to dominate? Star players such as linebackers Jason Phillips and Robert Henson have departed. Keep an especially close eye on the line. No doubt, end Jerry Hughes is a good one. But he'll be surrounded by unproven commodities.
Tulsa: Will the offensive line gel? The unit received a blow when C Jody Whaley opted not to return for his fifth-year senior season. That makes finding a center a top priority. For now, Clint Anderson has moved from guard to fill the void, but it's hoped a newcomer can fill the void so Anderson can move back to guard.
Utah: Will the Utes get decent quarterback play? Brian Johnson is impossible to replace. The competition among Corbin Louks, junior college transfer Terrance Cain and true freshman Jordan Wynn will continue in August. Further muddling things is that running back Darrell Mack has departed along with wide receivers Freddie Brown, Brent Casteel and Brandon Godfrey.
Western Michigan: Will the defense hold up? The unit lost nine starters, including the entire secondary. Coordinator Steve Morrison likes his young talent, but the defense may not be able to be as aggressive given the inexperience. Western has the offense to win the MAC, but a shaky defense might be too much for the offense to overcome.

Starters Lost - 2008

I have looked long and hard for a reliable list for starters lost. This year Steele will keep tabs of them and update them weekly on philsteele.com.
I will monitoring that on a weekly basis . Here are last years totals:

TGS 2009 COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEW...NOTRE DAME

4530_weis1.jpg
So, are Charlie Weis' days at Notre Dame already numbered? Not officially, perhaps, but you'd be surprised how many Domers have their own ideas as to who will be the Fighting Irish head coach in 2010.

Some Domers, reflecting back almost a quarter century to Lou Holtz' well-orchestrated hiring, believe that a similar "secret" arrangement might already have been struck with Cincinnati's impressive Brian Kelly, and cite how ironic it was that the news of Kelly not taking the Tennessee job and the announcement that Weis would return to South Bend in '09 happened almost simultaneously last December. Of course, there's a better chance that was all coincidence, but it helps the rumor mill whirr, doesn't it? Other subway alums are already promoting Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald; word from some of the "underground" Notre Dame networks is that the power brokers in South Bend are keeping very close tabs on the young Wildcat HC. Whether Fitzgerald wants to leave his alma mater never seems to come up with those ND backers, but hey, it's another juicy rumor. Some Domers are even holding out hope that Urban Meyer will change his mind from a few years ago and return to South Bend, never minding the fact that Meyer seems to have a pretty good thing going at Florida. But you get the idea, as potential candidates from those above to Jon Gruden to Regis Philbin all seem to come up at one time or another.

What we do know is that the days when Weis would have few worries about his job security in South Bend just because he possessed a long-term contract are probably gone forever. That factor once kept Gerry Faust employed at Notre Dame for the duration of his 5-year package in the '80s. But in the past decade the Irish have been almost as quick to hit the ejection button on their coaches as George Steinbrenner once did with Yankee managers. It's certainly not lost on Weis that predecessors Bob Davie and Tyrone Willingham were both sent packing with time still remaining on their deals. Performance counts as much as contracts nowadays at Notre Dame.

And performance certainly hasn't been up to par lately, with Weis off back-to-back disappointing campaigns, including a 3-9 ugly-fest in 2007. Things marginally improved a year ago, but the Irish still needed a bowl win over outmanned Hawaii, in the type of minor postseason affair the school used to proudfully shun, to get above .500. And it's become so chic to taunt Notre Dame that even Barack Obama saw fit to poke fun at the gridders during his controversial appearance at graduation ceremonies in May.

Weis certainly won't have the "youth excuse" to fall back upon this season, with the bulk of the ND lineup consisting of upperclassmen. And after the departure of o.c. Mike Haywood to Miami-Ohio, Weis will have no one to blame for the play-calling but himself, as he's again handling those duties. Ten starters are back on offense, including jr. QB Jimmy Clausen, who's developed a nice rapport with deep-threat WR Golden Tate (58 catches and 10 TDs LY). But Clausen's protection was spotty LY, and a supposedly more-physical OL still wasn't able to open holes with any consistency for RBs Armando Allen, Robert Hughes & James Aldridge, all of whom return. Clausen's maturity and decision-making also remain concerns after he tossed 17 often ill-advised picks in '08.

Prospects might be a bit better for a stop unit that now has respected d.c. Jon Tenuta calling the shots after sharing duties with Corwin Brown LY. Tenuta, who has switched the "D" from a base 3-4 to a 4-3, is expected to launch blitzes from all angles, thanks to the enhanced quicks and athleticism on the platoon. There's now enough talent in the 2ndary for Tenuta to risk leaving the DBs on the proverbial island; big things are expected from sr. SS Kyle McCarthy and jr. FS Harrison Smith, who moves from LB. True frosh LB Man'ti Teo, who spurned USC, might be Weis' best-ever defensive recruit and should contribute immediately, while sophs Kapron Lewis-Moore & Ethan Johnson could emerge as pass-rushing terrors on the DL.

Summary...The pieces might be in place for a Notre Dame resurgence, especially since the '09 schedule appears manageable and with the "D" now a full Jon Tenuta production. But memories are still fresh of the Irish getting manhandled on numerous occasions, and despite all of those returnees on offense, Weis can't be comforted by the fact that his fate essentially rests in the erratic hands of QB Jimmy Clausen. Let the rumor mill whirr.

Weis's jb should b e safe because he plays such a soft schedule. 9 wins appear to be pretty much of a lock, but the real question is how long will the Irish stand still if losses to USC continue and no BCS Bowl bids appear? Anything short of a 9 win season will probably cost Weis his job.

BQH: And Weis is yet to beat BC either. Year 5 is put up or shut up for Weis. No excuses.
