I don't think our country can survive a modern day depression.

If we don't get the economy back up and running soon , we could end up in a depression.. Not sure we can ignore the possibility of this happening if we continue down this path..

Catastrophic ramifications that are to scary to think about.. It sure wouldn't justify shutting down the economy like we're presently doing..

Maybe some of our resident financial experts here can weigh in.

It's less than 3 weeks now since the OP & many places are starting to open up their economy even more or are about to do so in the next few days or weeks.

"People who think "enough is enough" don't understand how a pandemic works. This is not some global conspiracy to install totalitarian big brother governments around the world. This is a big effort to try and prevent our healthcare system from collapse.

Those who think "enough is enough" should talk to people in NY, Italy, Spain, and listen to the stories being shared directly by healthcare workers.

We'll eventually all *have to* get Covid. It'll be around for a very long time, but if we all get it a once, it'll be a health catastrophe.

I'm all for liberty, and not being told what to do, but I'm also ethical and considerate to others. I understand that if I go out I literally risk the wellbeing of other people. I stay in because I ought no, not because I have to."

Some of California's Governor Newsom's ideas for reopening. You can expect a similar plan from Oregon's Governor.

Here are the six conditions according to Newsom's office:

  1. The ability to monitor and protect our communities through testing, contact tracing, isolating, and supporting those who are positive or exposed.
  2. The ability to prevent infection in people who are at risk for more severe COVID-19.
  3. The ability of the hospital and health systems to handle surges.
  4. The ability to develop therapeutics to meet the demand.
  5. The ability for businesses, schools, and child care facilities to support physical distancing.
  6. The ability to determine when to reinstitute certain measures, such as the stay-at-home orders, if necessary.

Newsom seems content with keeping the state's economy shuttered indefinitely: and if you were hoping to make up for everything on the festival circuit this summer, well, Newsom said the state probably won't allow large gatherings before the end of the summer. Or even before the end of next summer: Newsom said a vaccine or 'herd immunity' would be necessary before mass gatherings can be allowed.
Here's Newsom again, in his own words:
When it comes to re-opening, SCIENCE -- not politics -- must be California's guide.

Things may never get back to "normal"? Whatever "normal" is supposed to mean.

They certainly won't ever be the way they were before COVID-19. Never.

I don't think never is applicable with CV, or at least hope it isn't, but the people thinking things are going to return to normal this year are in for a rude awakening.

The unemployment isn't a big deal YET, but it's going to be when the unemployment and other handouts end.

The bread and soup lines from the 1930's currently are people sitting in their cars along with the tens of millions who have been receiving disability and food stamps for decades..

Once the virus spreads in the US, economy is torched off either way.

Perhaps you could mitigate some damage with slightly better decision making but I think you're going to find out pretty soon that just telling people the economy is "open" isn't going to stimulate much economic growth.

33 million plus now have filed for unemployment since the Chinese virus came our way..

How many more will file ?

How many won't be going back to their old jobs. ?

How many will have even bigger problems when the unemployment stimulous is gone..
