I don't think our country can survive a modern day depression.

Some here don't think forward. , past their last post.. We can't sink into a depression over this.
Even if the death rate stays between 1- 1.5% , its something that still will be better than sinking into a depression..

Doesn't mean you can have strict safeguards ..

Maybe the present orders, rather than leading to a depression, will stop a depression from occurring & or stop worse damage to the economy than what would have happened without extreme measures (mass social distancing, business shutdowns, etc) being ordered? Besides also worse damage to the quality of life, health, & human lives (as opposed to deaths).

Until we can provide our healthcare workers all of the equipment they need to keep safe.....any measures to return to a more normal life will be flawed. We hear "talk" about private industry retooling but when will they be able to provide a new mask or ventilator to fill the need....a week, a month?

There will be other effects not in the equation that are not being asked. 6,000 healthcare workers are infected.....when we start losing them...how soon until we can have trained replacement. What if you had a heart attack in New York right now and could be saved but there is no room for you. There will be a whole group of casualties because of cases like this.

Almost all of the governments efforts right now should be on getting equipment to the healthcare industry. Once that has happened then start looking at taking other moves.

If for example the Easter date was when we magically are supposed to start life as normal again.....the economy wont magically improve. Good luck opening your restaurant that day and expecting a packed house. Major purchase are not going to be a high priority: cars, houses, TV's, computers. Nothing is going to happen fast no matter what....no matter of what the "back to work" date is...a week or month or two months from now. The can of worms is already opened and you cant close it.

A more significant returning to normal will occur when there is some sort of vaccine is found.

Pretty informative NS.. I would add that I doubt anyone is expecting the economy to magically return to normal over night. At some point , we need to start somewhere , especially in areas of the country not hit very hard from this.

3.3 million jobless claims last week in the u.s.
The highest ever since the start of tracking this data in 1967

During the great depression sources say 15 million were out of work..of course the percentage of unemployed would be higher due to a smaller population than now...but from what I've seen alot of the virus hysteria people dont care about percentages..they care about actual numbers ..
So in about 1 month almost 1,100 have died from covid
In 1 week 3.3 million new unemployed
The virus had a big head start but it looks like unemployment will never get caught

Trump cannot change policies implemented at state and local levels. The governors are shutting down their respective states and schools

How is this being talked about in any other way? Are CNN and it's ilk really saying something different?

He can lift travel bans, he can't order businesses to open. This is as silly as talking about getting rid of the electoral college, it's NOT HAPPENING.

But, you do realize you're only talking about NY, Washington and California right and these states are getting more and more of what they need on a daily basis.

The rest of the country is not in a doom and gloom scenario.

A vaccine won't be introduced for months if not a year or so. You are crazy to think that's when our country opens again.

I truly believe that this crisis should bring both parties together along with all medical experts and take care of business in getting the economy and well being of the US back in order....would love seeing Trump take advice from the left and implement some good financial decisions....that would help Trump get re-elected ....win/win for everybody except us Trump haters....but if that is what it takes then I am on board....always country first....

Your hero DT wants to open everything up in 2 weeks from Sunday despite the fact that the virus is spreading uncontrollably and the US will lead the world in infections by midnight tonight.

He said he would like that to happen.

Everyone would like for that to happen.

Doesn't mean it's going to.

When will you start coming together ? Whenever you show up in these threads , your case of TDS breaks out.

With that being said , all the lying by MM isn't exactly an invitation for working together.. Also trying to impliment Green New deal initiatives is disgusting. Not the time for it right now.. All these financial decisions you're referring to for the most part are being negotiated out of the House and Senate.. Just doesn't fall on Trump

Democrats=This situation is the end of mankind and we should quarantine for months. Also, Trump is terrible and handled this situation terribly.

Republicans=This situation is unfortunate but not as bad as the media is making it out to be. Also, although Trump has made some errors in how he's handled it, by in large, he's done a decent job of responding to this pandemic.
