The Philadelphia Eagles have released veteran linebacker Devin White, who signed a one-year deal this offseason. The former Pro Bowler never appeared in a regular-season game for the Eagles.
White was signed to give the Eagles a productive player and veteran presence in the middle of their defense. But those things never happened after White lost his position battle with Nakobe Dean. Younger linebackers and special teams contributors Ben VanSumeren and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. also kept him off the field during his brief time in Philadelphia.

Still just 26 years old, White will now look to make an impact somewhere else. By releasing him now, the Eagles have given White a chance to find a new home before teams start to ramp up trade talk ahead of the Nov. 5 deadline.
There should be a decent market for White, a 2021 Pro Bowler who played an integral role in the Buccaneers' championship season back in 2020. A former No. 5 overall pick, White was a productive tackler who was also capable of getting to quarterbacks and forcing turnovers in Tampa.

During the Buccaneers' Super Bowl season, White set career highs with 140 tackles and nine sacks while also forcing and recovering a fumble. Last year, he tallied a career-high two interceptions in what was ultimately his final year in Tampa Bay.
Here are five possible landing spots for White.

Bengals

Cincinnati's defense has been historically bad this year and the biggest reason for its 1-4 start. The Bengals have two long-term starters at linebacker in Logan Wilson and Germaine Pratt, but Cincinnati should be turning over every stone possible in an attempt to fix the defense, which is why White could be an option here. If anything, he would provide depth and competition to a defense that could use both.

Jets

New York make sense given C.J. Mosley's ongoing toe injury that has sidelined him for the Jets' last three games. The Jets, based on owner Woody Johnson's decision to fire Robert Saleh on Tuesday, are clearly in win-now mode, which makes the signing of White make even more sense.

Lions

Detroit suffered a hit to its defense lately when linebacker Derrick Barnes sustained a season-threatening injury against the Cardinals back in Week 3. While Barnes had mostly been used on the outside, White's addition would give Detroit some flexibility on defense when it comes to personnel. White could also provide a pass rush to a defense that is trying to find a complement in that area to Aidan Hutchinson.

Jaguars

Foyesade Oluokun's foot injury that landed him on injured reserve has created a pretty big void in the middle of Jacksonville's defense. While Oluokun is expected to play again this year, the Jaguars could benefit from signing White in the interim. He would also provide depth whenever Oluokun is ready to re-enter the lineup.

Buccaneers

A possible Tampa reunion? That can't ruled out as the Buccaneers recently placed promising linebacker SirVocea Dennis on injured reserve. Unlike the other teams on this list, White knows the Buccaneers' defensive system and wouldn't need an acclimation period.

Jets fire Robert Saleh: Identifying potential ripple effects following New York cutting ties with head coach

New York moved on from Saleh after a 2-3 start to 2024

The New York Jets have pulled the plug on Robert Saleh. After a 2-3 start to the 2024 season, the organization has fired its head coach after three-plus seasons on the job.
While not the most jaw-dropping piece of news to come out of the NFL in its history as Saleh's seat had been warming up, it is a jarring development for a club that was looked at by some folks to be a legit contender in the AFC East and the conference at large entering the year. But there's the rub. New York was never able to live up to its talent level under Saleh, particularly on the offensive side of the ball, and that proved to be his demise.
But what's next? What ripple effects could this firing have on the Jets going forward? We'll dive into some of the immediate and big-picture questions below surrounding New York following Saleh's departure.

Does this impact a potential Davante Adams trade?

The major story surrounding the Jets before this news of Robert Saleh's firing was a looming blockbuster trade for current Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams. CBS Sports Lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones reported over the weekend that an Adams trade is on the horizon, and the Jets are at the top of his list to reunite with his former Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. While GMs across the league told Jones that their belief was that Adams would ultimately end up with the Jets, Jones also noted that it isn't exactly a lock with teams like the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers also in the mix.

Does this change at head coach alter the mindset of New York's front office? Are they still inclined to maximize future assets to build up this team? On the other side, does Adams view this situation as an attractive landing spot, or is he better served looking at other options?

Is Joe Douglas next?

Whenever a head coach is fired, it's a logical step to take in asking about the status of the general manager. After all, Douglas did hire Saleh to be his head coach in 2021, so the failures of his tenure fall at least in part on his shoulders. And, as much as he is lauded for executing a trade for Aaron Rodgers and finding stars like Garrett Wilson, Sauce Gardner, and others via the NFL Draft, Douglas hasn't been perfect. His selection of Zach Wilson at No. 2 overall in 2021 set the franchise back years, and he recently had the miscue of trading for pass rusher Haason Reddick, who has yet to show up amid a contract dispute that extends back to when he was with the Eagles.
It was reported before the start of the regular season that Douglas was entering the final year of his contract and had yet to sign an extension with the organization. With that in mind, something will need to give as it relates to Douglas. Will ownership allow a lame-duck GM the power to make long-term decisions beyond 2024? Will they extend him and give him another shot at finding a head coach? It's all very murky for Douglas at the moment.

How does Aaron Rodgers assess this situation?

Maybe the biggest question of them all, right? While Saleh himself was reportedly blindsided by this firing, one would have to think that Rodgers was given a heads-up -- or outright asked to give his blessing -- on the move. Of course, Rodgers isn't going to take his ball and go home in the middle of this campaign, but it's a fascinating question to ponder whether or not he views this situation with the Jets as a legitimate opportunity to win.
If the season continues down its current trajectory even post-Saleh's firing and the offense continues to be lackluster, does a then 41-year-old Rodgers take a step back and mull retirement? If New York is on the precipice of a rebuild with a new head coach and possibly a new general manager in 2025, is that something he wants to sign up for?

Do the Jets upset the Bills in Week 6?

You might be surprised by this question, given the turmoil the Jets are currently in, but teams do typically get a boost in the immediate aftermath of their head coach being fired. Of the 39 teams whose head coaches either resigned or were fired during the season since 2000, there has been a sizable jump in winning percentage, according to Sportico.

Before the change, those teams averaged a 27% win percentage, but that jumped to 41% in the first game after the change and to 37% for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, the winning percentage against the spread jump from 36% pre-change to 54% in the first game post-change and 50% for the rest of the season.
According to SportsLine's consensus odds, the Jets are currently a 2.5-point home underdog for the "Monday Night Football" matchup against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6.
If New York outright wins this upcoming game, they would be in first place in the AFC East. A fitting way to end this already wild week.

Wednesday’s 6-pack:
Interesting Week 6 college football spreads:
— Washington @ Iowa (-2.5)
— Texas (-14) vs Oklahoma (@ Dallas)
— Penn State (-5.5) @ USC
— Arizona @ BYU (-4.5)
— Ohio State (-3) @ Oregon
— Ole Miss (-3.5) @ LSU

Quote of the Day
“This is probably the best team I’ve had in 25 years. I just felt that the best way to go forward was a new direction. Taking Jeff Ulbrich and making him the interim head coach, I thought that would get the most out of this team and give us the best chance that we all want to have, which is going to the playoffs.”
Jets owner Woody Johnson

Wednesday’s quiz
Who was the Dodgers’ manager, last time they missed the playoffs?

Tuesday’s quiz
Patrick Mahomes played his college football at Texas Tech.

Monday’s quiz
Bruce Bochy managed the San Diego Padres, last time they were in a World Series.

*******************************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

— Jets fired coach Robert Saleh after the team lost 23-17 to the Vikings in England; Jets were 20-36 in Saleh’s 3+ years as head coach. DC Jeff Ulbrich is the interim coach.
This is complicated; Week 6 is early to fire a coach. Jets’ last two losses were by a total of seven points. Jets owner Woody Johnson used to be an ambassador to England, maybe he didn’t like seeing his team lose in front of friends. Who knows why rich people do things?
Jets obviously signed QB Aaron Rodgers before last season, but he tore his achilles on the 4th play of the season, so Saleh got a Mulligan for last year. Not this year.
Another odd part of this is that most NFL teams have their bye week after they play over the pond, but the Jets’ bye isn’t until the week before Thanksgiving- they host the Bills on Monday night this coming week.

— Mets 7, Phillies 2
Sean Manaea allowed five baserunners, one run in 7 strong IP.
Pete Alonso homered, walked twice, scored two runs.
Game 4 is Wednesday in Queens.

— Padres 6, Dodgers 5
All the scoring in this game was in the first 2.5 innings.
San Diego bullpen allowed only one baserunner in four scoreless IP.
Padres scored all six of their runs in the second inning.
Game 4 is in San Diego Wednesday.

— Last month, Dodger P Walker Buehler and his wife were at Santa Anita racetrack; they were confronted by a group of people there, and apparently one of the people stole a watch from Buehler- the watch is said to be worth $100,000. The crime is still under investigation.
Dodgers were playing in Colorado that weekend, but Buehler wasn’t going to pitch so he and some other players got the weekend off. Maybe he should’ve gone.

— Liberty 31, Florida International 24, OT
5-0 Flames were favored by 15.5 points.
FIU scored two TD’s in last 6:23 to force overtime.
Liberty ran ball for 281 yards (5.6 yards/carry).

— Cruddy weather in Florida has moved the Memphis-South Florida game from Friday night to Saturday in Tampa.

— RIP to former MLB pitcher Luis Tiant, who passed away at age 83; Tiant was 229-172 in his 19-year career, where he pitched for six different teams.
He led the AL with a 1.60 ERA in 1968, the Year of the Pitcher; after MLB lowered the mounds that winter, Tiant went 9-20, 3.71 the next year, then Cleveland traded him to the Twins.
In 1972, Tiant went 15-6, 1.91 for the Red Sox, again leading the AL in ERA; he helped Boston make it to the ’75 World Series. He was 3-0, 2.86 in four postseason starts.
RIP, sir.

— New England Patriots are going to give rookie QB Drake Maye his first NFL start this week, at home against Houston.
Patriots lost their last four games, scoring total of 26 points in last three. This seems kind of early to be throwing a rookie QB to the wolves, but the other rookie QB’s in the NFL are doing well, so maybe Maye will do alright.

— Saints QB Derek Carr has an oblique injury, figures to miss a couple games; Jake Haener is the Saints’ backup QB- this week figures to be his first start. Haener has thrown 8 passes in his three NFL cameo appearances. Rookie Spencer Rattler would be Haener’s backup.

— Green Bay WR Romeo Doubs got suspended for last week’s game for conduct detrimental to the team. The suspension cost him $54,422; he is expected back this week.

— NBA training camps are underway; LA Clippers made a wise move, hiring Jeff Van Gundy as an assistant coach. Sounds like he will be their defensive coordinator.
ESPN is off the rails; not sure why they fired Van Gundy and Mark Jackson as game analysts, but they did, so now Van Gundy is back coaching, which is good for the Clippers.

— Cincinnati Reds did a smart thing last week and hired Terry Francona as their new manager; they fired all three of their hitting coaches Tuesday.
Reds were 77-85 this week, ramming 16th in runs scored, 26th in batting average. How do you finish 16th in runs scored playing in their hitting-friendly ballpark?
Reds were 15-28 in one-run games this year; they were shut out 16 times, losing four 1-0 games.

— One event I’ve circled on the calendar are baseball’s Winter Meetings, which will be in Dallas December 8-11. Looking forward to seeing which players move where this winter, with an eye on making my fantasy team better for next year.

— College basketball is only four weeks away; I’ve started prep work for that, which is harder than ever because of the ridiculous amount of players transferring, but it will be fun to watch college basketball again.

— Speaking of which, my new TV was delivered Tuesday morning. My last TV was a warrior, 10 or 11 years, including the pandemic year when it was on almost constantly. The last week was odd, with no TV, watching games on my laptop. YouTube TV is a good thing to have.

Foot Long

Big Underdogs Start Quick
NFL underdogs of 6+ points are now 11-8 SU and 16-2-1 ATS (89%) through five weeks — covering the spread by 7.8 PPG.

This is the first time since 1960 dogs of 6+ are over .500 SU thru 5 weeks, with also the best ATS win pct.

Dogs of 6+ are 11-8 SU through five weeks. For comparison, dogs of 6+ were 4-16 SU through five weeks last year and were 27-109-1 SU (20%) between 2019-23 through the first five weeks of the season. Dogs of 6+ haven’t been above .500 SU through four weeks since 1983.

Dogs Are Home

Record in Week 6
We have ten games with home underdogs in Week 6 of the NFL.

If we close with ten, it would be tied for the most in a single week since 1972 – the only week in the Super Bowl era we had more than 10 home dogs. The last week with ten came back in Week 17 of 2020. We haven’t had a week with 10+ home dogs before Week 10 since Week 4 of 2004.

The Good and The Bad

Jets Move on From Saleh
The New York Jets fired Robert Saleh after their loss in London vs. Vikings. 38 teams have fired their coach during the regular season since 2003. Those teams have gone 17-21 straight up (SU) and 22-16 against the spread (ATS).

Those teams had a 100-256-3 SU record (28%) prior to the head coaching change. They also compiled a 132-221-5 ATS (37.4%) record prior to the coaching change.

The Jets will try to become the 3rd team to make playoffs with an interim coach with 2021 Raiders and Rich Bisaccia and 1961 Oilers and Wally Lemm.

Since 2000, 12 head coaches have been fired within the first five games of the season, including Robert Saleh this year. Those teams are 6-5 SU and ATS, including 5-2 SU and ATS since 2010.

Rookie Life

Starting Early
Through five weeks, Rookie QBs are 10-5 SU and 12-3 ATS. It is the 2nd-most combined wins by rookie QBs in the first five weeks of a season in history, only trailing 1987. Since Commanders/Bengals on MNF, rookie QBs have won and covered 7 straight games.

Last year, rookie QBs started 3-8-1 ATS through four weeks and 5-9-1 ATS through five weeks of the season.

Daniels is the third rookie quarterback since 1950 to start and win four of his team’s first five games, joining Joe Ferguson from 1973 with Buffalo and Dak Prescott from 2016 with Dallas.

Public Bettors Struggle
The betting public (51%+ of tickets) are 28-46-2 ATS this season, with a $100 bettor down $2,056 – the worst start for the betting public through four weeks in the last 20 years.

Public by week:
+ Week 5: 6-8 ATS
+ Week 4: 5-8-1 ATS
+ Week 3: 6-10 ATS
+ Week 2: 5-10-1 ATS
+ Week 1: 6-10 ATS

Looking overall at how the public fared ATS in the NFL last year, they went 139-115-9 ATS, with a $100 bettor up $1,063 — the best single regular season for the public in the Bet Labs database dating back to 2003.

Totals Hit Bottom
How low is too low? A few very low totals on the board this week. NFL totals of 37 or less are 33-12-1 (73%) to the under since 2020.

Tight Lines

Small Spread Early Season
The average point spread for an NFL favorite through four weeks is sitting around -4.0 PPG this season. That is the lowest mark for any season through the first five weeks since 1960.

There has been only one double-digit favorite this week, the fewest through five weeks in the Super Bowl era.

Undefeated Rest

5-0 Teams On Bye
The Minnesota Vikings are the story of the NFL through five weeks. They are 5-0 SU/ATS full game. 5-0 SU/ATS in first half, 5-0 SU/ATS in the 1st quarter and their team totals are 5-0 to the over. The 2024 Vikings and 2007 Patriots are the lone teams to start a year 5-0 SU/ATS and 5-0 1H ATS in the last 20 years.

Not only is it a great start, but an unexpected one. Minnesota had a preseason win total of 6.5. The only teams since 1990 to start 5-0 SU with a win total below 7 are the 2024 Vikings, 2009 Broncos and 1999 Rams.

The Chiefs are also 5-0 SU. In the last 20 years, they are the 5th team to start 5-0 SU as reigning champions.

2024 Chiefs 5-0 SU
2019 Patriots 8-0 SU
2015 Patriots 10-0 SU
2011 Packers 13-0 SU
2007 Colts 7-0 SU

The Chiefs joined the 1990 49ers as the only teams in NFL history to start 5-0 after winning back-to-back Super Bowls.

THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

Since the home teams last won three straight ATS on TNF in September 2020, road teams have been on a roll, 33-35 SU & 39-27-2 ATS (59.1%) in the last 68.
System Match (PLAY): SAN FRANCISCO (-3.5 at SEA)

There has been some interesting data regarding the first and second half of the season in terms of Thursday night games. In the first half of the season, or Weeks 1-8, home teams have gone 23-20 SU but 14-27-2 ATS (34.1%). Going back even further, since 2016, TNF home teams in weeks 9 & later are 37-25 SU and 36-24-2 ATS (60%). There seems to be a fundamental edge to playing at home with less rest late in the season.
System Match (FADE): SEATTLE (+3.5 vs. SF)

Home underdogs on TNF have really struggled of late, going 4-18 SU and 7-15 ATS (31.8%) in their last 22, scoring just 14.5 PPG. In terms of totals, 16 of the L20 (80%) TNF games featuring a home dog went Under.
System Matches: FADE SEATTLE (+3.5 vs. SF), also PLAY UNDER the total (o/u at 49)

A long-running trend of Thursday night home-field advantage being crucial in divisional games has turned lately, with these hosts going 17-16 SU but 13-20 ATS (39.4%) since the start of the 2019 season. Prior to that, divisional hosts were on an amazing 17-2-1 ATS run.
System Match (FADE): SEATTLE (+3.5 vs. SF)

There has been a wild trend that has developed over the last 4+ seasons regarding TNF road teams coming off a home loss the prior Sunday, as they have rebounded incredibly with a 17-18 SU and 23-11-1 ATS (67.6%) record.
System Match (PLAY): SAN FRANCISCO (-3.5 at SEA)

Unfortunately, home cooking has not solved the ills for Thursday home teams coming off a loss in their most recent game, as they have been a brutal bet over the last five seasons, going 24-30 SU and 19-34-1 ATS (35.8%).
System Match (FADE): SEATTLE (+3.5 vs SF)

More on totals, there have been 30 TNF games since 2012 with a total of 50 or greater, they went Under at a 22-8 rate (73.3%).
System Match: PLAY UNDER in SF-SEA (*if the total gets to 50 or more, currently at 49)

Good TNF Team Trends
Seattle 9-5 SU and 8-4-2 ATS in the last 14
System Match (PLAY): SEATTLE (+3.5 vs. SF)
