OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Paul Millsap hit the go-ahead 10-footer with 12.7 seconds left, and the Atlanta Hawks overcame Russell Westbrook's 46 points to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 110-108 on Monday night.

After Millsap's shot, Thunder center Steven Adams rebounded a missed 3-pointer by Westbrook and dunked it, but a review determined that the basket came just after time expired.

Westbrook, the NBA's leading scorer with more than 30 points per game, also had 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Dennis Schroder scored 31 points and Millsap added a season-high 30 for the Hawks, who won despite center Dwight Howard missing the game with tightness in his lower back.

Jerami Grant scored a season-high 15 points, and Andre Roberson matched a season high with 14 points for the Thunder.

BULLS 113, PISTONS 82

CHICAGO (AP) - Jimmy Butler scored 19 points, Rajon Rondo had 10 points, 14 assists and eight rebounds, and Chicago beat Detroit to snap a three-game losing streak.

Taj Gibson added 16 points, Robin Lopez had 14 and Dwyane Wade, Doug McDermott and Nikola Mirotic had 13 apiece for Chicago, which had lost six of eight.

Jon Leuer scored 16 points for the Pistons, who have dropped three straight and four of five.

After scoring just 69 points in a 26-point loss on Friday, the Bulls busted out for 69 points in the first two quarters, their best for any half this season.

PACERS 107, WIZARDS 105

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Thaddeus Young made a runner with 0.9 seconds left to give Indiana a victory over Washington.

Paul George scored 27 points and Jeff Teague had 23, but the Pacers needed the last of Young's 12 points after the Wizards scored seven straight to tie it.

With 4.6 seconds remaining, Young took the inbound pass at the top of the key, squared up his defender, Markieff Morris, then drove and put up his runner from the left side.

Bradley Beal missed a potential winning 3-pointer at the buzzer and scored 22 points.

Marcin Gortat finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds, John Wall added 19 points and 10 assists, and Otto Porter Jr. scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

TIMBERWOLVES 115, SUNS 108

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Karl-Anthony Towns had 28 points and 15 rebounds, and Minnesota beat Phoenix.

Andrew Wiggins scored 26 points and Zach LaVine added 23 for the Timberwolves. Ricky Rubio had 12 assists and Minnesota picked up its first win at home since Nov. 17.

Eric Bledsoe scored 27 points for the Suns, who have lost three straight and four out of five. Brandon Knight had 21 points off the bench and Devin Booker scored 18 on 6-for-15 shooting for Phoenix.

NUGGETS 117, MAVERICKS 107

DENVER (AP) - Nikola Jokic had 27 points and 15 rebounds, Gary Harris scored a career-high 24 points and Denver beat Dallas.

Jokic finished an assist shy of his first career triple-double and tied his career high in points to help the Nuggets win their third straight game. Emmanuel Mudiay scored 18 points.

Deron Williams led Dallas with 23 points and eight assists.

Denver's offensive surge started after its 20-point loss in Dallas on Dec. 12. Coach Michael Malone shook up his starting lineup and the Nuggets have responded by scoring 30 or more points in eight of the last 12 quarters and are averaging 125.3 points since the change.

Tuesday’s six-pack

— Tulsa 55, Central Michigan 10— Ouch. Bad showing by the Chippewas.

— Panthers 26, Redskins 15— Damaging loss for Washington’s playoff hopes.

— Tom Savage will start at QB for Houston Sunday; he is Texans’ 9th starting QB since 2013.

— If you bet against 49ers/Browns every week this year, you’d be 23-4-1.

— Detroit-Carolina NHL game was postponed Monday because of bad ice in Raleigh.

— Interweb says offense/defense players are at odds in Denver. That happens in football when one side of ball is way better than other side.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Green Bay-Chicago game was played in frigid conditions at Soldier Field Sunday; turns out Bears’ QB Matt Barkley played with a wetsuit on underneath his uniform. He said the wetsuit did not hinder his play at all

Barkley is from California, played college ball at USC; he threw for 362 yards Sunday. He may have started a trend for cold-weather quarterbacks.

12) You read a lot about crummy things athletes do; the media loves negative publicity. Well, last week, Colts’ punter Pat McAfee paid the utility bills of 113 people in Indianapolis who were about to get their power turned off. He did same thing for 80 or 90 people last year.

Thats a good thing an athlete did; too bad it didn’t get more play in the media.

11) Clippers’ star Blake Griffin is having minor knee surgery, will be out for several weeks. He missed an average of 31 games a year the last two years, figures to miss another good chunk of games now.

10) There is a ranch in Texas that is the only place in America where it is legal to go and pay money so you can drive and fire guns from an actual tank like the ones in the Army. Not sure why anyone would do this, but you can if you want.

9) Aroldis Chapman criticized how he was used in the World Series; good grief. Cubs won their first World Series since 1908, don’t be criticizing the manager, no matter what- they won, and that is all that matters. Chapman is really rich and has a World Series ring; be positive.

8) Indian Hills CC in Ottumwa, IA has seven D-I transfers on its team, that is seven kids who washed out of D-I basketball programs, for whatever reason. This must be a great team to coach; you’ve got talented kids who you know are on their last shot at a college scholarship— they’re not going to give the coach trouble unless they’re biggest screw-ups on earth.

Ottumwa, Iowa by the way, was Radar O’Reilly’s hometown in the great TV show M*A*S*H*

7) The Texas state championship high school football game drew 35,059 fans to AT&T Stadium; thats 35,059 fans going to a HIGH SCHOOL game.

6) San Antonio Spurs retired Tim Duncan’s number 21 Sunday night; good for him. Great player and from all you read, a great teammate. Congrats.

5) In the last 17 Presidential elections, dating back to 1948, only nine times did an elector not vote for the candidate he/she was supposed to. This year, 37 electors would’ve had to abandon Donald Trump for the outcome of the election to be changed. It didn’t happen.

4) Former Minnesota Gophers coach Jerry Kill will be the new OC at Rutgers; Kill had to quit at Minnesota for health reasons; he was having seizures related to his epilepsy. Kill has since lost 25 pounds while working as an administrator at Kansas State, says he is healthier now. We wish him well.

3) Northeastern 81, Michigan State 73— Spartans are 7-5, they’re a young team whose most talented player is still hurt and they’re probably not going to make the NCAA tournament. One of the Interweb posts Monday said that today, Michigan State would be a #4 seed……in the NIT.

2) NFL has to simplify the catch rule; they’ve made themselves look stupid by making it too complex. You have the ball and two feet on the ground; thats a catch. Simple as that; none of this “going to the ground” nonsense that makes you roll your eyes.

1— This week’s kerfuffle is about Christian McCaffery/Leonard Fournette sitting out their bowl games to avoid injury, since they’re first-round prospects in the 2017 NFL Draft. When a player says “I’m skipping the bowl game to begin my preparation for the NFL Draft” it is a gutless way of saying, “I’m not risking injury to play in a game I couldn’t care less about.”

What about their teammates? Are they upset and if so, do they say anything? It is a free country obviously, but still you’re part of a team and you’re quitting on the team before the season is over.

Former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said on TV Monday: “There is no way 100% of his teammates support his (McCaffery’s) decision.”

I’m pretty much deferring on this to people who’ve played major college football; early returns are mixed. There is a lot of gray area here; it is an interesting debate.

Tuesday's Tip Sheet
December 20, 2016

Favorites won four of five games inside the NBA on Monday night with the Thunder losing in the final seconds to the Hawks as the only chalk team to fall. The Pacers failed to cash as five-point favorites in a 107-105 home triumph over the Wizards as Washington covered for the fourth straight game. Following a 5-2 night to the UNDERS on Sunday, the OVERS bounced back last night with a 3-2 mark.

Game of the Night – Jazz at Warriors (-11 ½, 210) – 10:35 PM EST

A pair of first place teams in the Western Conference hook up at Oracle Arena as Utah will look like a different team against Golden State tonight than the one that lost to the Warriors on December 8. Golden State held off Utah, 106-99 after building a 24-point first quarter advantage as Gordon Hayward, George Hill, and Rodney Hood all sat out for the Jazz due to injuries. Hayward and Hood are back for Utah, who look to snap a six-game losing streak to the Warriors that dates back to March 2015.

The Jazz (18-10 SU, 16-11-1 ATS) wrap up a quick two-game road swing following an 82-73 victory at Memphis on Sunday as 1 ½-point favorites. Utah has won seven of eight games with the only setback in this stretch coming to Golden State, as Quin Snyder’s team is listed as an underdog for the third time in the last 14 contests. The Jazz have put together a solid 7-0 SU/ATS record as a road favorite this season, but have slumped to a 1-5 SU/ATS mark when getting points on the highway.

Golden State (24-4 SU, 12-15-1 ATS) is fresh off a 45-point blowout of Portland on Saturday night, 135-90 to easily cash as 14-point home favorites. Kevin Durant posted a 34-point, 11-rebound performance for the Warriors, who snapped a five-game ATS skid, while improving to 6-7 ATS as a home favorite this season. Golden State is riding a seven-game UNDER streak as Steve Kerr’s team is 1-1 to the UNDER in games with a total posted at 210 or less this season.

Tops in Texas

The only two teams to beat the Warriors this season both hail from the Lone Star State and meet tonight in Houston. The Rockets (21-7 SU, 19-9 ATS) play host to the Spurs (22-5 SU, 14-12-1 ATS) at Toyota Center as the road team has won each of the two meetings this season. In the past matchup in Houston on November 12, the Spurs held off the Rockets, 106-100 as 1 ½-point favorites as San Antonio owns a league-best 14-1 record on the highway. The Rockets are the hottest team in the NBA by winning 10 straight games, including six consecutive victories at Toyota Center.

Central Clash

The last time the Cavaliers visited Milwaukee in late November, the defending champions were embarrassed by the Bucks, 118-101 as seven-point favorites. Cleveland is back at BMO Harris Bradley Center tonight, but are without forward Kevin Love, who is out due to a left knee contusion. Milwaukee has been off for three days since pulling off an impressive home-and-home sweep of Chicago, while limiting the Bulls to 69 points in last Friday’s rout. Cleveland has won six of seven games with the only defeat coming at Memphis in which Love, LeBron James, and Kyrie Irving all sat out.

Coming up Roses

The Knicks return home following a 2-3 road trip as the Pacers invade Madison Square Garden. Derrick Rose is expected to be in the lineup tonight after missing the past two losses at Golden State and Denver with a back injury. New York owns a strong 9-3 SU/ATS home record when Rose in the lineup, while posting a 6-1 SU/ATS mark in the home favorite role. Indiana held off Washington last night, 107-105 on a Thaddeus Young layup in the final seconds to win its second straight game following a two-game skid. Playing without rest isn’t the best situation to back the Pacers, who own a dreadful 1-5 SU/ATS mark on the second of a back-to-back set.

Looking for Points

The Grizzlies haven’t scored many points of late, putting up fewer than 100 points in six of the past seven games. Memphis was limited to 73 points in Sunday’s home defeat to Utah, while cashing the UNDER in seven straight games. The Grizzlies are listed as a home underdog for the 10th time this season tonight against the Celtics, as Memphis owns a 6-3 SU/ATS mark in this role. The Celtics are riding a two-game winning streak following victories over the Hornets and Heat, but Boston has lost four straight visits to FedEx Forum.

Hot Nuggets

Don’t look now, but Denver is heating up of late by winning consecutive games following Monday’s 117-107 triumph over Dallas. The Nuggets travel to Los Angeles with no rest to face the Clippers, who play their first game without Blake Griffin, who is sidelined with a knee injury. Los Angeles is back from a three-game road swing which ended with a loss at Washington on Sunday, as the Clippers have stumbled to a 1-6 ATS record the past seven games.

Head-to-head trends

-- The 76ers shoot for the season sweep of the Pelicans tonight after Philadelphia won at New Orleans earlier this month. New Orleans hasn’t had much luck in Philadelphia, losing the last two visits to Wells Fargo Center.

-- The Hornets have won three straight meetings with the Lakers, including a pair of double-digit victories last season. Los Angeles travels to Charlotte tonight as the Lakers have covered in each of its past four trips to Spectrum Center.

-- Toronto and Brooklyn are meeting for the first time this season as the Raptors captured all four matchups last season. Three of the four games last season finished UNDER the total, as the Nets scored 99 points or less in three of those defeats.

-- The Heat are 6-1 in the last seven matchups with the Magic since February 2015, including a 108-96 victory at Orlando on opening night. Miami has won three straight home contests against Orlando as the Magic were limited to 97 points or less in each loss.

-- The Kings have dropped their last seven meetings with the Blazers, including a 122-120 overtime setback in Portland last month. The Blazers make their first trip to Golden 1 Center as Portland has won in its past three visits to Sacramento.

NBA roundup: Spurs rally past Rockets
December 21, 2016

HOUSTON -- Patty Mills turned a scrambled offensive possession into a 3-pointer with 12.9 seconds left as the San Antonio Spurs erased a 13-point, fourth-quarter deficit en route to a 102-100 win over the Houston Rockets on Tuesday night at Toyota Center.

Houston had its 10-game winning streak snapped amid eight fourth-quarter turnovers. The Rockets also missed 31 of 38 3-point attempts, including a wide-open look from guard Eric Gordon following the Mills basket. The Rockets' streak of games with at least 10 3-pointers made ended at 27.

Mills and Manu Ginobili combined for 25 points off the San Antonio bench, hitting 7 of 11 3-pointers. Kawhi Leonard paced the Spurs with 21 points while LaMarcus Aldridge added 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. San Antonio's Pau Gasol finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Houston guard James Harden posted 31 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists but missed 10 of 11 3-point tries.

Hornets 117, Lakers 113

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Nicolas Batum hit a go-ahead bank shot with 13 seconds remaining, and Charlotte fought back from a 19-point, first-half deficit to pull out a win over Los Angeles.

Batum's bank shot gave the Hornets a 115-113 lead. After the Lakers' Nick Young missed a 3-point attempt, Batum came back to hit two free throws for a 117-113 lead with six seconds remaining.

Kemba Walker led Charlotte with 28 points and added 10 assists. Batum had 23 points and 10 assists. Jordan Clarkson led the Lakers with 25 points, and Young scored 24.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Some of my favorite movie quotes

13) “Who’s the u-boat commander?” From Risky Business, when the kid’s father’s Porsche winds up in Lake Michigan, and then in a repair shop to be cleaned up.

12) “I believe in the Church of Baseball. I’ve tried all the major religions, and most of the minor ones. I’ve worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, trees, mushrooms, and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. But it just didn’t work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology. You see, there’s no guilt in baseball, and it’s never boring.”
Susan Sarandon, from Bull Durham

11) “He’s a great player, but I don’t think we can get him in academically.”
Jerry Tarkanian, playing himself in Blue Chips

10) “In ‘Confessions of a Winning Poker Player,’ Jack King said, ‘Few players recall big pots they have won, strange as it seems, but every player can remember with remarkable accuracy the outstanding tough beats of his career.’ It seems true to me, ‘cause walking in here, I can hardly remember how I built my bankroll, but I can’t stop thinking of how I lost it.”
Matt Damon in Rounders

9) “I guess it comes down to a simple choice; get busy living, or get busy dying.”
Tim Robbins from Shawshank Redemption

8) “……Who cares? I’ll tell you. Me. I’m not your best friend. I’m your only friend. I don’t make anything? I’m making you money. And lest we forget, that’s the only reason any of you became stockholders in the first place. You want to make money! You don’t care if they manufacture wire and cable, fried chicken, or grow tangerines!

You want to make money! I’m the only friend you’ve got. I’m making you money. Take the money. Invest it somewhere else. Maybe, maybe you’ll get lucky and it’ll be used productively. And if it is, you’ll create new jobs and provide a service for the economy and, God forbid, even make a few bucks for yourselves.

And if anybody asks, tell ’em ya gave at the plant. And by the way, it pleases me that I am called “Larry the Liquidator.” You know why, fellow stockholders? Because at my funeral, you’ll leave with a smile on your face and a few bucks in your pocket. Now that’s a funeral worth having!”
Danny DeVito, in Other People’s Money

7) “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard… is what makes it great.” Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own

6) “You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to.”
Jack Nicholson, from A Few Good Men

5) “Being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there. It’s not about winning. It’s about you and your relationship with yourself, your family and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn’t let them down because you told them the truth. And that truth is you did everything you could. There wasn’t one more thing you could’ve done. Can you live in that moment as best you can, with clear eyes, and love in your heart, with joy in your heart? If you can do that gentleman – you’re perfect!”
Billy Bob Thornton in Friday Night Lights

4) “And you know Steve you get the feeling that Billy Chapel isn’t pitching against left handers, he isn’t pitching against pinch-hitters, he isn’t pitching against the Yankees. He’s pitching against time. He’s pitching against the future, against age, and even when you think about his career, against ending. And tonight I think he might be able to use that aching old arm one more time to push the sun back up in the sky and give us one more day of summer.”
The great Vin Scully, from For Love of the Game

3) “GOD LIKES ME! HE REALLY, REALLY, LIKES ME! WHAT A DAY! WHAT A FABULOUS DAY!”
Richard Dreyfuss in Let It Ride

2) “You’re a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It’s the top spot, kid. It’s the guy who takes the fall. It’s the guy everybody’s looking at first – the leader of a team – who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. ‘Cause you make them believe. That’s a quarterback.”
Al Pacino, from Any Given Sunday

1)“Do whats in your heart, son. You’ll be fine.”
Robin Williams, from Good Will Hunting

Wednesday's Tip Sheet
December 21, 2016

Tuesday’s card provided one of the more entertaining nights in the NBA this season with three games going to overtime. The Celtics, Cavaliers, and Magic all pulled off road overtime triumphs, including Orlando topping Miami in two overtimes. Favorites compiled an 8-3 SU and 6-5 ATS record as the Spurs and Kings each won as short underdogs. OVERS hit in eight of 11 games on Tuesday, as the 76ers and Jazz were the only teams not to hit the 100-point mark last night.

Game of the Night – Wizards at Bulls (-4, 208 ½) – 8:05 PM EST

Chicago (14-13 SU, 14-13 ATS) rebounded from a three-game losing skid by blasting Detroit on Monday night, 113-82 as the Bulls jumped out to a commanding 69-34 halftime advantage. All five Bulls’ starters finished in double-figures as the front-court trio of Jimmy Butler, Taj Gibson, and Robin Lopez combined to shoot 21-of-25 from the floor. The Bulls cashed as 2 ½-point favorites, ending an 0-5 ATS home favorite skid.

Washington (12-15 SU, 13-14 ATS) saw its three-game winning streak on Monday at Indiana, falling to the Pacers, 107-105 in the final seconds. The Wizards managed a cover as 5 ½-point underdogs to improve to 4-0 ATS the last four games, while Washington eclipsed the 100-point mark for the sixth straight contest. Scott Brooks’ club has hit the OVER in 10 of the past 11 games, including five consecutive OVERS away from Verizon Center.

The Bulls captured the first matchup this season against the Wizards at United Center, 106-95 on November 12. Chicago cashed as 10-point favorites, as Butler posted a game-high 37 points in the victory. Washington played without its top two players, John Wall and Bradley Beal as the Wizards put together one bad quarter, getting outscored in the third, 28-14.

Pitiful Pistons

Detroit has seen plenty of ups and downs this season but Stan Van Gundy’s squad is currently riding a downward trend. Following Detroit’s 31-point blowout loss at Chicago two nights ago, the Pistons have lost three straight games and fell to 3-6 ATS the last nine trips to the court. The Pistons host the Grizzlies tonight, as Detroit has lost three of its past four games at the Palace of Auburn Hills, while scoring 92 points or less in each defeat. Memphis also looks to get on track after falling in overtime to Boston last night to drop to 1-4 the past five following a six-game winning streak to start December.

Rebuilding Rockets

Houston’s 10-game winning streak came to an end in Tuesday’s 102-100 setback to San Antonio as the Rockets squandered a 13-point lead with 4:30 left. Three nights earlier, the Rockets erased a 12-point deficit in the final three minutes to force overtime at Minnesota and eventually beat the Timberwolves. Houston heads to Phoenix as the Rockets have won seven of their past eight games away from Toyota Center. The Rockets have won in each of their previous five trips to Arizona, as the Suns enter tonight’s action in a 2-7 SU and 2-6-1 ATS funk.

Back-to-Back Bucks

For some strange reason, Milwaukee is in the midst of three consecutive home-and-home sets, already sweeping Chicago and facing Washington this weekend. Sandwiched in between those two are the defending champion Cavaliers, who knocked off the Bucks in overtime at BMO Harris Bradley Center last night, 114-108. The venue shifts to Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland tonight as Kevin Love sat out Tuesday’s victory with a knee contusion. Milwaukee hasn’t thrived in the back-to-back spot this season by going 1-4 SU/ATS with no rest, while finishing UNDER the total four times. Cleveland hasn’t been much better in this rest spot at 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS, but both victories came at home.

Flying Home

The Pelicans avenged a home loss to the 76ers from earlier this month by beating Philadelphia last night, 108-93 as 3 ½-point favorites. New Orleans returns from a 1-2 SU/ATS road swing back to Smoothie King Center to begin a five-game homestand as the Thunder invade the Big Easy tonight. The Pelicans have posted an impressive 6-1 ATS mark as a home underdog this season, as New Orleans opened as a two-point ‘dog to OKC. The Thunder own a 2-3 ATS mark in the road favorite role, while losing three of their past four visits to New Orleans.

Head-to-head trends

-- The Wolves pulled off a season sweep of the Hawks last season as the two teams hook up in Atlanta. In last season’s matchup at Philips Arena, Minnesota built a 34-point lead before Atlanta pulled off a furious comeback to lead by one with three minutes left. However, the Wolves ended the game on an 11-0 run to prevent a huge meltdown and cash as 8 ½-point underdogs.

-- Eleven days ago, Utah crushed Sacramento in Salt Lake City, 104-84 as six-point favorites as the two clubs meet in Utah again tonight. The Kings have lost seven of the past 10 matchups with the Jazz since December 2013, while both teams are coming off action last night. Sacramento has lost five of six with no rest, while Utah has thrived on the second of a back-to-back by going 5-1 SU and 4-1-1 ATS.

-- Portland pulled away from Dallas in its first matchup this season at American Airlines Center in November, 105-95. This series has been pretty even over the years with the teams splitting the last 10 meetings, with two games last season won by Dallas in overtime.
