CLEVELAND (AP) Kyrie Irving had 31 points and a career-high 13 assists, and LeBron James scored 29 as the Cleveland Cavaliers won their second game in two nights over the Milwaukee Bucks, 113-102 on Wednesday despite being without two starters.

The NBA champs were not at full strength as Kevin Love didn't dress for the second straight game with a bruised left knee, and J.R. Smith sat out after breaking his right thumb Tuesday at Milwaukee.

Smith needs surgery, and the Cavs won't have a timetable on his return until after the operation.

They were barely missed as Cleveland won for the eighth time in nine games. The only loss in that stretch was last week at Memphis when James, Irving and Love stayed home to rest.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 28 points and Jabari Parker 27 for the Bucks, who took the Cavs to overtime at home but fell behind by 21 in the fourth quarter this time and couldn't come back.

Tristan Thompson added 15 rebounds for Cleveland.

GRIZZLIES 98, PISTONS 86

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) - Marc Gasol matched a career high with 38 points on 14-of-17 shooting, and Memphis beat Detroit in a matchup of slumping teams.

The Grizzlies ended their three-game losing streak, while Detroit dropped its fourth straight.

Memphis was boosted by the return of Chandler Parsons, who missed the previous 17 games with a bone bruise on his left knee. He had two points and two rebounds in 15 minutes.

Jon Leuer and Reggie Jackson led the Pistons with 18 points apiece. Andre Drummond had 13 points and 19 rebounds.

TIMBERWOLVES 92, HAWKS 84

ATLANTA (AP) - Andrew Wiggins scored 19 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 17 points and 18 rebounds in Minnesota's victory over Atlanta.

Zach LaVine added 18 points for the Timberwolves, who earned consecutive wins for the first time since April 5-9 last season.

Dennis Schroder finished 21 points and Paul Millsap had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Atlanta, which has dropped six of seven at home. The Hawks have lost during that span to four teams with losing records: New Orleans, Detroit, Orlando and Minnesota.

THUNDER 121, PELICANS 110

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Russell Westbrook had 42 points and 10 rebounds to lead Oklahoma City over New Orleans.

Alex Abrines scored nine of his 18 points during a pivotal 11-0 run early in the fourth quarter. The surge gave the Thunder a 100-87 lead with 9:18 left, and the Pelicans never got within eight after that.

Enes Kanter finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Anthony Davis had 34 points and 15 rebounds for New Orleans. Jrue Holiday added 23 points and 10 assists, and Terrence Jones scored 21 for the Pelicans, who have lost nine of 12.

WIZARDS 107, BULLS 97

CHICAGO (AP) - John Wall had 23 points and nine assists, and Washington rallied past Chicago for its third road victory of the season.

Trey Burke and Marcus Thornton came off the Washington bench to spark a decisive fourth-quarter burst. Chicago closed to 97-93 with less than 3 minutes left, but Bradley Beal, Marcin Gortat and Wall followed with baskets to seal it.

Beal finished with 21 points, while Gortat had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Burke scored 10.

Jimmy Butler led a balanced Bulls offense with 20 points, and Dwyane Wade added 19. Rajon Rondo had 10 assists.

ROCKETS 125, SUNS 111

PHOENIX (AP) - James Harden had 27 points and 14 assists, propelling Houston past Phoenix for its 11th victory in 12 games.

Eric Gordon added 24 points off the Rockets' bench, shooting 7 of 13 on 3-pointers. Patrick Beverley finished with 18 points, nine assists and nine rebounds.

Houston made 18 of 38 attempts from 3-point range.

Devin Booker's 28 points led the Suns, who have lost four in a row.

KINGS 94, JAZZ 93

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - DeMarcus Cousins scored 21 points and Sacramento rallied from a 20-point deficit to defeat Utah.

The Kings used an 11-3 run, led by Ty Lawson and five free throws by Cousins, to take a 91-89 lead with 25.9 seconds remaining. It was their first lead since the opening quarter.

The Jazz led by 20 in the third, but their defense disappeared in crunch time.

Gordon Hayward led Utah with 28 points and 10 rebounds, while Rudy Gobert had his ninth consecutive double-double with 17 points and 14 boards. He and Timberwolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns are tied for the longest active streaks in the NBA.

Hayward was isolated against Cousins in the waning seconds but missed a short fadeaway that could have tied it.

Lawson set a season high with 19 points.

MAVERICKS 96, TRAIL BLAZERS 95

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Harrison Barnes had 28 points and Dallas held off a furious rally by Portland that ended when Damian Lillard missed a 3-pointer at the final buzzer.

Deron Williams added 23 points for the Mavericks, who led by 25 early in the third quarter.

Lillard finished with 29 points, including 20 in the third period. It was Portland's fourth straight loss.

Lillard's 3-point attempt at the buzzer came under intense pressure from former Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

— Duke 72, Elon 61— Grayson Allen is a punk; can’t wait until he pulls this stuff in the NBA and someone pummels him.

— ESPN treated Kentucky-Louisville like the Super Bowl, then treated the whole halftime show talking about Duke.

— St John’s 93, Syracuse 60— Yowza; where did that score come from?

— Fairfield 89, Boston College 83— Worst thing is that Fairfield was favored to win.

— DeMarcus Cousins has 103 career technical fouls, 23 more than anyone else during that time.

— Louisville 73, Kentucky 70— Fun game to watch; tremendous effort given by both sides.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Bottom 4, top 9 in the NFL

32) Browns— Have shot at their first win when the warm weather Chargers visit Lake Erie on Christmas Eve.

31) 49ers— Lost their last 13 games, but play team they got their only win against this week, when they visit Los Angeles. Rams are actually favored to win a game.

30) Jaguars— They can’t even fire their coach right; word got out that they canned Gus Bradley before the team plane took off from Houston. Apparently the flight home was fairly awkward.

29) Rams– Good chance for Goff’s first career win this week.

9) Packers— They’ve had Favre/Rodgers at QB for the last 25 years; shouldn’t they have won more than two Super Bowls?

8) Dolphins— Other than a healthy Tony Romo, Matt Moore is the best backup QB in the NFL and now Miami fans are going to find that out. Only time Dolphins made playoffs in last 14 years was the year Brady tore up his knee in Week 1 and missed the rest of that year.

7) Seahawks— Their starting RT was a basketball player at Western Kentucky who played about one half of one college football game.

6) Falcons— They just pounded the dregs of the NFL, now they step up in class this week and have a rematch with the Panthers, who are playing on a very short week.

T4) Raiders/Chiefs— Oakland has the better record but the Chiefs beat them twice. Not fond of KC blowing two games at home in the last month; they need to be better in the red zone.

3) Giants— Not a huge fan of theirs but they win every week and that is what counts. This is where I tell you that the NFL should take radios out of players’ helmets and let the QB’s call their own damn plays- thats why you prepare for six days to play on Sunday. NFL would have a way better product if they let Game Day be the Players’ Day.

2) Cowboys— Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen is being mentioned for the Rams’ HC job, in large part because he was Dak Prescott’s college coach. I can think of worse things.

1— Patriots— What happens when a big time college QB refuses to play in a bowl game so he doesn’t get hurt and ruin his draft prospects? I’m thinking if a QB did that it would hurt his stock a lot, since the QB is a team leader and the captain doesn’t desert his ship, even if it is sinking.

December 23, 2016

Without Paul, the Clippers received a boost from their bench. Marreese Speights had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Raymond Felton added 13 points. Jamal Crawford chipped in 11 points. The Clippers' reserves outscored the Spurs' bench 58-31.

Clippers center DeAndre Jordan had 11 points and nine rebounds, and J.J. Redick also scored 11 for the Clippers (22-8), who beat the Spurs for the second time this season.

Kawhi Leonard led the Spurs (23-6) with 27 points and nine rebounds. Pau Gasol contributed 21 points and eight rebounds. Danny Green and LaMarcus Aldridge scored 10 apiece. The Spurs lost for only the second time on the road. They are 15-2 away from home.

Jeff Teague had a season-high 31 for Indiana, which lost its second straight. Paul George and Miles each had 19 for the Pacers, and Thaddeus Young added 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Pacers shot 42.7 percent.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

NFL trends with Week 16 upon us……

— Seahawks are 17-6 as a recent home favorite vs NFC West foes.

— Tennessee is 7-25-2 vs spread in its last 34 divisional games.

— Carolina is 6-10-1 vs spread in its last 17 games.

— Green Bay is 22-11-1 in its last 34 divisional games.

— Saints are 13-6 vs spread in their last nineteen games.

— Buffalo is 14-8-1 in its last 23 games vs AFC East opponents.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) Eagles 24, Giants 19— Dallas is NFC East champ and #1 seed in NFC. Horrible late hit call on the Giants set up Philly’s third TD— one of the worst penalties ever. Carson Wentz was running and Eli Apple slid to avoid him but they made contact- it wouldn’t have been a foul in basketball.

12) The more I think about it, the more adamant I am that the NFL needs to rid itself of penalties for taunting, celebration and fines for uniform violations. They would gain millions of dollars in positive press and give mainstream media less stuff to whine about.

Players would police the celebrations themselves if they got out of hand and now and then they would for sure. But it would also get people talking more about what they saw and that generates lots of free publicity. Nothing wrong with that.

11) 1B/DH Edwin Encarnacion signed with Cleveland for three years, $60M.

10) Pitcher Ivan Nova gets $26M for three years from the Pirates.

9) Bartender here at the Aria Hotel is a White Sox fan; he wasn’t the least bit happy when the Cubs won the World Series and he seemed annoyed that I thought he might be.

8) You know that guy Mike Greenberg who is on ESPN with Mike Golic in the mornings? He just signed a contract for $6.25M a year— seriously, he did. Good Lord, there is a guy who has made thievery legal— $6.25M a year for him??? Yikes.

7) Idaho 61, Colorado State 50— High scoring Potato Bowl, but who wants to go to a bowl and freeze your butt off? Idaho plays its home games in a dome; their QB is Matt Linehan, whose dad is the Dallas Cowboys’ OC. Vandals are de-emphasizing football after next year, so this will be a great memory for everyone associated with the program.

6) NFL will have a 4-team developmental league next spring, which sounds very similar to what the ill-fated UFL was a few years ago. Teams will play six games each.

5) Random food comments:
— Aria Cafe is open 24/7 and it is outstanding. Had chicken and waffles for the first time, and their fettuccini alfredo is tremendous.
— Pizzeria near the Aria sports book is expensive and um, no bueno. Greasiest pizza I’ve ever had, seriously, and I’ve eaten a large amount of pizza.
— Highly recommend the egg nog milkshakes at McDonald’s.

4) USC 83, Missouri State 75— Trojans are 12-0, a highly unlikely unbeaten team.

3) Cincinnati 93, Marshall 91 OT— Credit to Dan D’Antoni, Marshall’s coach/Mike’s brother; you score 91 points on Cincinnati, even with an extra 5:00, thats some great offense. D’Antoni has made the Thundering Herd a competitive team fairly quickly.

2) LaSalle 98, Mercer 96 3OT— Game of the night was in Macon, GA.

1— Duke caved in to public pressure and suspended Grayson Allen indefinitely for numerous tripping violations: Here are Duke’s next few games:

Dec 31- @Virginia Tech— Could be dicey in Blacksburg.
Jan 4- Ga Tech and Boston College, both at home. Duke couldn’t lose to these two teams at home if all the Blue Devils showed up drunk.

Jan 10— @ Florida State— How much you want to bet Allen is back for this game????? This is going to be a very good game, even if Allen plays.

Christmas Day Trends
December 22, 2016

The NBA takes center stage over the NFL this Christmas Sunday with five games on tap on the hardwood as opposed to only two on gridiron.

Here is a basketball lover’s take on NBA action scheduled this season on December 25th.

Enjoy the games and the holiday and remember, with the Cavs and the Warriors set to take off in flight, a Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

CHRISTMAS PAST

Here’s a breakdown of the 10 teams playing on Christmas Day this season and how they’ve performed in games played on Dec. 25 since 1990:

Boston Celtics: 2-5 SU and 3-4 ATS and 3-4 O/U
1-4 UNDER last five games

Chicago Bulls: 10-2 SU and 8-4 ATS and 3-8-1 O/U
1-6-1 UNDER last eight games

Cleveland Cavaliers: 3-3 SU and 3-3 ATS and 1-5 O/U
0-5 UNDER last five games

Golden State Warriors: 3-2 SU and 1-4 ATS and 2-3 O/U
Trending: 0-4 ATS last four games

Los Angeles Clippers: 4-4 SU and 4-4 ATS and 3-5 O/U
4-1 ATS last five games

Los Angeles Lakers: 7-12 SU and 11-7-1 ATS and 5-12-2 O/U
0-7-1 UNDER last eight games

Minnesota Timberwolves: 0-0 SU and 0-0 ATS and 0-0 O/U
First-ever Christmas day appearance this season

New York Knicks: 3-7 SU and 2-8 ATS and 6-4 O/U
0-4 ATS last four games

Oklahoma City Thunder: 4-4 SU and 4-4 ATS and 3-5 O/U
4-2 ATS last six games

San Antonio Spurs: 3-5 SU and 3-4-1 ATS and 2-6 O/U
0-3 SUATS last three games

AND THE STOCKINGS WERE STUFFED

Most recent noteworthy trends wrapped inside each Christmas Day game…

Boston vs. New York:

Celtics 7-1 SU and 5-3 ATS last eight games in this series
1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS following Oklahoma City
Knicks 3-0 SUATS last three games on Sundays
1-9 UNDER last ten home games on Sundays
5 of the last 6 games in this series have played UNDER the total

Golden State vs. Cleveland:

Cavaliers 8-1 SU last nine games on Sundays
5-2 SU but 2-5 ATS vs. non-conference foes this season
Warriors 16-8 SU last twenty-four games in this series
0-4 ATS last four games on Sundays
3-9 ATS before the Raptors

Chicago vs. San Antonio:

Bulls 5-1 SU last six games on Sundays
10-3 SU before the Pacers
Spurs host 4-1 ATS last five games in this series
0-4 UNDER last four games on Sundays

Minnesota vs. Oklahoma City:

Timberwolves 4-1 SU and 5-0 ATS following the Kings
0-3 SUATS vs. division opponents this season
4-25 SU last twenty-nine games in this series
Thunder 0-3 ATS Sundays vs. division foes / 4-8 ATS before the Heat

LA Clippers vs. LA Lakers:

Clippers 14-1 SU in this series, including 10-0 the last ten
0-3 SUATS last three games on Sundays
1-5 ATS following the Mavericks
Lakers 3-25 SU and 6-21-1 ATS vs. .400 or greater foes on Sundays
2-13 SU before the Jazz

DEFENDING CHAMPION DOLDRUMS

Christmas Day has not been a gifting experience for NBA’s defending champions.

That’s confirmed by their lousy 6-9 SU and 4-101 ATS overall mark since 1999, including 2-6 SU and 1-6-1 ATS vs. quality foes with a win percentage of .700 or greater.

The Cavaliers will look to add to that number when they host the revenge-minded Warriors at the ‘Q’ this Sunday.

UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Non-conference games certainly bring the best defensive effort out in teams on Christmas Day.

Of the 22 non-conference clashes played on Dec. 25 since 1991 involving Eastern and Western Conference foes, as these matchups have gone 4-17-1 UNDER.

Watch the intensity in the Bulls-Spurs and the Cavs-Warriors games on Xmas.

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING

Christmas Day underdogs with a win percentage of .740 or more (see the Warriors – check the line) are 1-8 SU and ATS.
