Wednesday's Tip Sheet
December 28, 2016

All four favorites in the NBA on Tuesday night picked up victories, while three of them picked up covers. Boston, Oklahoma City, and Houston all won by double-digits in the chalk role, while the Jazz squeezed by the Lakers, 102-100 as 5 ½-point road favorites. The OVER split in four games, as the UNDER has improved to 9-6 since Monday night.

Game of the Night – Raptors at Warriors (-9 ½, 225) – 10:35 PM EST

Toronto continues its six-game Western Conference road swing in Oakland tonight against Golden State. The Raptors (22-8 SU, 20-9-1 ATS) captured the first two contests at Utah and Portland in the favorite role, although Dwane Casey’s club didn’t cover as eight-point favorites in Monday’s 95-91 nail-biter over the Blazers. Toronto has won eight of its past nine games overall, including seven consecutive victories away from Air Canada Center.

Golden State (27-5 SU, 14-17-1 ATS) has yet to lose consecutive games this season as the Warriors hope to keep that streak alive tonight following a shocking meltdown in Sunday’s 109-108 defeat at Cleveland. The NBA Finals rematch was going Golden State’s way as the Warriors built a 94-80 advantage with 9:34 remaining, but the Cavaliers rallied with a 29-14 run the rest of the way for their fourth straight win over the Warriors. Kevin Durant posted a solid 36-point, 15-rebound performance for Golden State, but the Warriors dropped to 1-6 ATS in their past seven road contests.

The Raptors look to avenge a 127-121 home setback to the Warriors on November 16 as six-point underdogs. Toronto actually outscored Golden State in three of four quarters, but the killer was the Warriors chasing the Raptors in the second period, 32-15 to take control of the contest. Stephen Curry led the way with 35 points, barely offsetting Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan, who put up 34 points in the loss. The Warriors have won eight of the last nine meetings with the Raptors since January 2013, while capturing 11 straight home matchups and covering 10 times in Toronto’s last 11 visits to the Bay.

From a totals perspective, the Warriors are riding a 10-1 run to the UNDER the last 11 games, including three consecutive UNDERS at Oracle Arena. The UNDER is 4-0 in the past four with the total listed at 225 or higher, which is tonight’s total. Toronto is on a modest 3-1 UNDER clip the previous four games, but the OVER has cashed in its past seven trips to Golden State.

Head-to-Head Trends

Pacers at Wizards (-4, 212 ½) – Indiana edged Washington in its first matchup this season, 107-105 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, but the Wizards cashed as 5 ½-point underdogs. Seven of the past eight meetings have eclipsed the OVER, while the Pacers are 4-1 SU and 5-0 ATS in their last five visits to the Verizon Center.

Hornets (-2, 203 ½) at Magic – Charlotte has dominated this series recently by winning six of the past seven matchups, including a 109-88 home blowout earlier this month. The Hornets have seen plenty of success in Orlando by going 3-1 SU/ATS in the past four visits to central Florida, while three of those contests have sailed OVER the total.

Bucks at Pistons (-3 ½, 199) – Detroit snapped a five-game skid in Monday’s win over Cleveland, as the Pistons try to start a winning streak against the Bucks. Milwaukee has lost four straight meetings with Detroit since last season, as the Bucks fell at the Palace of Auburn Hills, 98-83 in late October.

Knicks at Hawks (-2, 212) – New York has been a thorn in Atlanta’s side recently by winning three straight meetings, including a 104-94 home triumph as 4 ½-point ‘dogs on November 20. Five of the last six matchups have hit the OVER, while five straight meetings in Atlanta have gone OVER the total since 2014.

Nets at Bulls (-10, 213 ½) – Chicago owns a 4-1 SU/ATS record in the past five matchups with Brooklyn, as the Bulls chased the Nets at Barclays Center on Halloween, 118-88 as 6 ½-point favorites. The Nets have held their own at the United Center by splitting the last four visits to Chicago, including a 105-102 upset as 10 ½-point underdogs last December.

Clippers at Pelicans (-4, 203 ½) –
Los Angeles has captured the first two matchups with New Orleans this season with both victories coming by double-digits. The Clippers are short-handed with Chris Paul and Blake Griffin sidelined, as L.A. is 0-3 since Paul went out last week with a hamstring injury. The Pelicans have been listed as a favorite only once in the past 10 meetings, falling 95-89 as two-point chalk last December.

Suns at Spurs (-15, 213 ½) – San Antonio doesn’t have issues with any team it seems like it and that story is the same with Phoenix. The Spurs are 8-0 SU and 5-2-1 ATS in the past eight matchups with the Suns, including a 107-92 triumph as eight-point road favorites in mid-December. The Suns have dropped 13 of the past 14 meetings in San Antonio since March 2009, but are 3-1 ATS in their last four opportunities as a double-digit underdog against the Spurs.

Wolves at Nuggets (-4, 217 ½) – The road team has dominated this series of late by winning seven of the last eight matchups, including Denver’s 102-99 victory at the Target Center in early November. The Nuggets have captured the last four meetings in the series, but the Wolves have won two of the past three visits to Pepsi Center with the only loss coming in overtime last season.

Kings (-3, 211) at Blazers – These Western Conference rivals have played two close contests this season with the home team winning each time. Portland edged Sacramento in overtime at the Moda Center in mid-November, 122-120, but the Kings picked up revenge at home last Tuesday, 126-121. The Blazers have won seven straight home meetings with the Kings, but Sacramento has covered four times in this stretch.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win this year’s NBA championship……

— Golden State Warriors -$140

— Cleveland Cavaliers 11-5

— San Antonio Spurs 9-2

— Los Angeles Clippers 10-1

— Toronto Raptors/Boston Celtics 22-1

— Houston Rockets/Oklahoma City Thunder 40-1

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Random thoughts after my vacation

13) It is good to be home; had great fun at the Aria Hotel in Las Vegas for eight days, but now it is time to get to work on college basketball. Having fun can be tiring.

12) There was a middle-aged man doing pushups in the McCarran Airport terminal by gate B14 Wednesday morning; I enjoyed my jelly doughnut while watching him exercise.

11) One of the basic rules of life: If there is a screaming child on an airplane that I am on, the child will undoubtedly be sitting right behind me. Just because.

10) $8 for WiFi is a sound investment for a 5-hour flight. Makes the time go so much faster.

9) Walking on the Las Vegas Strip at night is something everyone should do at least once; great place to people watch. It is better in summer than winter, but any time of year is fine.

Not a lot of English being spoken in Las Vegas this week; lot of visitors from other countries. Lot of people taking pictures of the ceiling in the Bellagio.

8) Planet Hollywood improved their sportsbook; put little dining area in near the bar, with white furniture that brightens the whole place up.

I’m watching the end of the Laker game Tuesday; game is 99-99 with 0:58 left, total is 204.5. Two guys in their 20’s come in and stand next to me; one of them has over 204.5. It looked good for his bet until a couple of missed foul shots, then lousy shot selection by D’Angelo Russell doomed him. My new friend was not happy. I went on my way.

7) If you ran an NFL franchise that needed a QB, would you trade a 1st and 4th-round draft choice to New England for Jimmy Garoppolo? Apparently that offer is on the table.

6) Dez Bryant’s TD pass against the Lions Monday night was the only left-handed TD pass in the NFL this season.

5) Tampa Bay Lightning head coach John Cooper was once a public defender in Lansing, MI; not sure how he got from there to being an NHL head coach, but he should write a book.

4) Oakland Raiders’ QB Matt McGloin is 1-5 as an NFL starter, with all six starts coming in 2013, when he helped ruin my ridiculously injury-riddled fantasy team (he was my 7th QB that year).

McGloin’s only win was against Houston, coached then by Gary Kubiak. McGloin needs to beat Kubiak’s Broncos this week for the Raiders to win the AFC West title.

3) I’m typing this and Bill Walton is at the UCLA-Oregon game talking about clothing-optional beaches in California. He is a gem.

2) Rookie QB Carson Wentz bought his offensive linemen shotguns for Christmas; if I’m coaching the Eagles, not sure I think thats such a great idea.

1) Northwestern 31, Pittsburgh 24— Cubs won World Series, Northwestern won a bowl game; whats next? Northwestern in NCAA tournament? That could happen too.

Inside the Paint - Thursday
December 29, 2016

It’s been a chalky week in the NBA with favorites going 23-7 straight up and 16-14 against the spread since Sunday. Thursday’s card has six games on tap, which includes the nationally televised double-header on TNT.

Game of the Night – Boston at Cleveland (TNT, 8:05 p.m. ET)

The Cavaliers (23-7 SU, 15-14-1 ATS) opened as six-point home favorites for this matchup and a few books have moved to seven as of Thursday morning. Cleveland has won seven of the previous eight meetings against Boston which includes a 128-122 decision on Nov. 3 as a 10 ½-point home favorite. The ‘over’ (207) easily cashed in that game but the ‘under’ was on a 6-1 run prior to that result.

Boston (19-13 SU, 18-13-1 ATS) is starting to come together and Tuesday’s 113-103 victory over Memphis was their second straight win and sixth in the last seven games. The Celtics have gone 16-9 since a 3-4 start and bettors should note that they didn’t have Al Horford or Jae Crowder playing in the aforementioned loss at Cleveland.

I’ve identified the Celtics as bullies before and until they improve on their record (7-9) versus teams with winning records, you can’t consider them a serious contender. Boston is listed as a 12/1 choice to win the Eastern Conference at Sportsbook.ag behind Cleveland (1/6) and Toronto (10/1). To put things in perspective, the Cavaliers are 13-5 vs. clubs above .500 while the Raptors are 10-7.

From a betting perspective, Boston has been a very good investment this season and its production on the road has been incredible. The Celtics are 12-7 SU and 13-5-1 ATS as visitors and what’s really impressive is that they’ve been in every game since they got healthy. After starting 1-3 on the road, Boston has won 11 of 15 and the four losses came by a combined 12 points with the worst decision coming at San Antonio (108-101).

The Cavaliers enter this game off a 106-90 loss at Detroit on Monday but LeBron James sat out and the team is now 0-3 without him in the lineup this season. As a home favorite, Cleveland has gone 15-2 SU and 9-7-1 ATS.

Along with the Cavs and Celtics, bettors have five other games to follow and below is my quick handicap.

Miami at Charlotte: I thought this line would be higher knowing the Hornets (-6) have been the better team this season and Miami’s playing with a short-handed roster. Charlotte has won four of its last five and is coming off a 120-101 win over Orlando on Wednesday as a 4 ½-point road favorite. Make a note that the Hornets have gone 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS when playing on no rest this season. Also, Charlotte is 10-3 SU as a home favorite but it’s only managed to produce a 7-6 ATS mark. Miami point guard Goran Dragic (back) is listed as ‘questionable’ for Thursday.

Oklahoma City at Memphis:
This will be the first meeting between the pair this season and the Grizzlies opened as short home favorites (-1 ½) over the Thunder and that says a lot especially since the team might not have point guard Mike Conley (toe) in the lineup. Oklahoma City has won and covered four straight and five of its last six yet they’re an underdog in this spot. Memphis has dropped two straight games and the defense looked very suspect (112, 113) in those setbacks. Tough schedule spot for the Grizzlies who are home for this game before heading out West for four straight contests on the road. This total opened 199 ½ and is down to 198 as of Thursday morning. The Thunder have been a great ‘under’ bet on the road (9-4) and Memphis has leaned to the low side (13-6) at FedEx Forum.

Philadelphia at Utah:
The Jazz have won eight straight against the 76ers and have covered five of those games, which includes a 109-94 victory on Nov. 7 as a five-point road favorite. Utah has only been a double-digit favorite once this season and while it won, it never had a chance to cover (-13) in a 103-100 win over Dallas at home on Dec. 16. The 76ers are 1-9 SU this season when catching double digits and just 4-6 ATS. Center Joel Embiid is expected to miss and the club has gone 2-6 without him in the lineup this season.

Toronto at Phoenix:
Tough game to handicap with both clubs playing on no rest and both coming off rough losses on the road. The Raptors fought back but wound up dropping a 121-111 decision at Golden State while Phoenix was run 119-98 at San Antonio. Toronto has gone 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS in back-to-back spots while the Suns have gone 1-4 SU and 2-3 ATS in those situations. The Raptors (-8) are laying a heavy price but they’ve been a good investment (6-1 SU, 5-2 ATS) as road favorites this season. Meanwhile, the Suns have been a respectable 4-4 SU and 5-3 ATS as home ‘dogs. The ‘over’ has gone 7-3 in the last 10 meetings between this pair and Thursday’s number (220) is the highest total on the board.

Dallas at L.A. Lakers:
It’s hard to argue for either one of these clubs but be aware that the Lakers are just 2-3 SU and 1-3-1 ATS as home favorites this season. They allowed 114.4 PPG in those games and that’s helped the ‘over’ go 5-0. The sense of urgency could be high for Dallas knowing it has a likely loss on tap with a trip to Golden State scheduled for Friday. The Mavericks already defeated the Lakers this season at the Staples Center, earning a 109-97 win as 4 ½-point road underdogs on Nov. 8. TNT will provide national coverage of this game at 10:35 p.m. ET.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

— Virginia Tech 35, Arkansas 24— Hokies were down 24-nil at the half. This was the 3rd-largest bowl comeback in the last ten years.

— South Florida 46, South Carolina 39 OT— Gamecocks turned ball over twice inside the Bulls’ 5-yard line. No bueno.

— Cavaliers 124, Celtics 118— Cleveland almost blew a 20-point lead.

— LSU dismissed 6-9 Craig Victor from its hoop team; he had scored 15.3 pts/game in Tigers’ last three games before he got the boot.

— Lipscomb 81, Missouri 76— Mizzou will likely be looking for a new coach in March.

— RIP coach LaVell Edwards, 86, who passed away Thursday. he made BYU a national power in football in the 80’s. RIP, sir.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a busy couple of days

13) So George Karl wrote a book and in promoting it, seems like he is managing to offend every single person in the NBA. Why is he doing this? Promote your book, don’t burn bridges; there is a difference.

12) You could play four years of college football and never know some of your teammates; thats how big college football squads are. Schools have an 85 scholarship limit, plus they have walk-ons/practice players too. If you’re on opposite sides of the ball, very possible you never meet a few guys.

11) I know absolutely nothing about UFC; my cousin claims that Amanda Nunes will beat Ronda Rousey in their bout Friday night, in case you care about stuff like that.

10) St John’s 76, Butler 73— Chris Mullin’s Red Storm beat Syracuse/Butler in last two games; they’ve got a solid 3-person nucleus. This wasn’t a fluky win; St John’s was only 4-16 on the arc. This was a good solid win- game was tied at the half.

9) Oregon 89, UCLA 87— Exciting, up-an-down game where defense wasn’t exactly a priority. Teams that beat UCLA will have to out-run them. Bruins are very hard to slow down.

8) Pitt 112, Marshall 106— Panthers were up 58-38 at half, but Dan D’Antoni has his team competing for 40:00 and this game got dicey for the Panthers late. Marshall is going to cause some problems in Conference USA.

7) Nebraska 87, Indiana 83— Cornhuskers were a 16-point underdog but they scored 1.21 points/possession and pulled a big upset in their Big 14 opener.

6) UConn hired back its former football coach Randy Edsall; in 2010, Edsall left UConn to go to Maryland, a move that didn’t help anyone. Getting back in Storrs should help the Huskies.

5) ESPNU has guy named Chris Spatola doing analysis on hoop games; he is Mike Krzyzewski’s son-in-law and also a former point guard at West Point. Sometimes in this crazy world of ours, it isn’t what you know, it is who you know.

4) Lane Kiffin has a weird resume; he is 41 and has already been HC of USC, Tennessee and the Oakland Raiders, but now he is at Florida Atlantic. Is he going backwards? If he wins at FAU will he quickly bolt for greener pa$ture$?

I’ll give Kiffin credit for this; in his three years as OC at Alabama, he had three first-year QB’s and got to the national playoff all three years. Not an easy thing to do.

3) Betting line this week on Matt McGloin’s passing yards for the Raiders: over 235.5 yards is +$135. Under 235.5 yards is -$175. Oakland tries to win the AFC West in Denver Sunday.

2) On February 8, 2017, the Rivers Casino will open in Schenectady, about 12 miles from Armadillo World HQ. Am curious to see what it is like; wonder how long it will be before we can go there and bet on games. I’m guessing that someday, the Trump administration will get sports betting legalized.

1) Sounds like Mark Sanchez is going to get a lot of playing time at QB for the Cowboys Sunday in Philly. Dak Prescott will start, Tony Romo will not play. Have fun handicapping that game.

Friday's Tip Sheet
December 30, 2016

Favorites fared well in the NBA on Thursday night by posting a 4-2 SU and 3-2-1 ATS mark. Home teams won five of the six contests, including the Suns (+8 ½), who knocked off the Raptors, 99-91. Cleveland (-6) held off Boston at home, 124-118 to win its eighth consecutive game at Quicken Loans Arena, while dropping the Celtics to 1-7 SU as a road underdog this season.

The only road team to come out on top last night was the Mavericks (+4), who rallied to beat the Lakers at Staples Center, 101-89 to improve to 3-1 in its past four road games since starting the season 1-13 on the highway.

Game of the Night – Clippers at Rockets – 8:05 PM EST

These two Western Conference rivals meet up for the first time this season as the Clippers have gone backwards of late by losing four straight games. Los Angeles (22-12 SU, 16-18 ATS) continues to play without Blake Griffin, while Chris Paul returned to the lineup on Wednesday after missing three games with a hamstring injury. Paul’s appearance in the lineup didn’t help matters for Los Angeles, who fell to New Orleans, 102-98 as 1 ½-point road favorites, in spite of the point guard scoring 21 points. The Clippers are 3-7 ATS the last 10 games overall, while posting an 0-5 ATS mark the past five road contests.

Houston (24-9 SU, 22-11 ATS) began December on fire by winning 10 consecutive games, but the Rockets are 3-2 in their past five since that hot streak. The Rockets are still in second place of the Southwest division behind the Spurs (26-6) in spite of a 13-2 record in December, while coming off Tuesday’s road blowout of the Mavericks, 123-107 as five-point favorites. The Rockets own a solid 11-3 record at Toyota Center this season with two of those losses to the Spurs.

Last season, the Rockets captured the first two matchups against the Clippers, but Los Angeles won the final two games. Houston and L.A. split both meetings at Toyota Center, as the Rockets are 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS in the last five home matchups with the Clippers.

Head-to-Head Trends

Bulls at Pacers (-4, 202 ½) –
These two Central division rivals meet for the final time in the regular season as the home team has won all three matchups. Chicago held off Indiana at the United Center, 90-85 on Monday, but the Pacers dominated the Bulls at home in early November, 111-94. Each of the past five matchups at Bankers Life Fieldhouse have finished UNDER the total.

Nets at Wizards (-8, 222) –
Washington has captured the past four meetings in this series since the start of last season, including a 118-113 comeback victory at Barclays Center earlier this month. The Wizards have lit up the Nets recently by scoring at least 111 points in each of the last four matchups, with all four games sailing OVER the total.

Heat at Celtics –
Boston has taken care of Miami twice this season with both victories coming at the American Airlines Arena. The Celtics have won five straight in the series, while limiting the Heat to 95 points or fewer in four of the victories.

Pistons at Hawks (-3 ½, 201) –
Detroit has gone through a December to forget (5-9), but began the month with a 121-85 blowout of Atlanta at Philips Arena. The Pistons have won in two of their past three visits to Atlanta, as the road team is 4-1 in the past five meetings. The OVER has hit in four of the last five matchups, as the winning team has posted at least 112 points in the past three meetings.

Bucks at Wolves (PK, 209) – These two teams that share a state border face each other for the first of two matchups this season. Milwaukee has won four straight games against Minnesota, including a pair of double-digit triumphs last season. In the Bucks’ past two visits to the Target Center, Milwaukee has limited Minnesota to 85 and 86 points, as three of the previous four games have finished UNDER the total.

Knicks at Pelicans – These two teams have split their season series the last two years with the home squad going 4-0. Both contests last season were low-scoring affairs with each game finishing UNDER the total, as New Orleans knocked off New York, 99-91 as 5 ½-point home underdogs.

Blazers at Spurs – San Antonio is riding a four-game winning streak against Portland since the start of last season, including a 110-90 blowout at the Moda Center last Friday night. The Spurs have captured four of the last five home matchups with the Blazers, while Portland has lost seven consecutive road games overall.

76ers at Nuggets (-11, 211 ½) – Denver goes for the season sweep of Philadelphia after beating the Sixers earlier this season, 106-98 as four-point favorites. Philadelphia has covered in its past four trips to the Pepsi Center as an underdog of 8 ½-points or more, including in a 104-103 buzzer-beating loss this past March.

Mavericks at Warriors (-18, 212) –
Golden State has dominated Dallas the last three seasons with an impressive 8-1 SU and 7-2 ATS mark. The Warriors routed the short-handed Mavericks earlier this season, 116-95 as 18 ½-point favorites, as each of the past three meetings at Oracle Arena have sailed OVER the total.
