Fact or Fiction

January 23, 2014

The calendar year is now said and done with, and that means that we are heading into the second-half of the NBA season. Check out some of the hot topic items heading into 2014 for NBA betting fans, as we decipher which are fact and which are fiction.

FACT

The Spurs Have Some Real Problems To Deal With: When forward Kawhi Leonard went down with a hand injury on Wednesday, the Spurs really needed to sweat. They've got a tough schedule ahead, the Rodeo Road Trip isn't all that far in the future, and both Leonard and center Tiago Splitter are stuck hurt. That leaves F Boris Diaw and C Jeff Ayres as the only two men who could possibly join Tim Duncan in the paint, and all of that seems to make for a lot of potential problems in the Lone Star State in the near future.

Injuries Aren't all that Ails the Knicks: Sure, F Metta World Peace and a pair of other forwards are out right now for the Knicks, but head coach Mike Woodson has to know that his team's defense is to blame for its five-game losing skid both straight up and against the spread. Allowing 109.4 points per game in any stretch of the season is bad, but when it's capped by allowing over 100-plus to the 76ers, you know you're in trouble. The Knicks don't just need to get healthy. They need to start playing a lot harder on the defensive side of the court as well.

LA's Best ATS Team Isn't the Clippers: Oh sure, the Clips have the better record of the two teams residing at the Staples Center at 25-19 ATS for the season, but the Lakers are the team on a tear right now with five straight covers coming into Thursday. Coach Mike D'Antoni has done a remarkable job fielding a competitive team without four men who are all better than any of the starting guards which he has to work with right now. When the Lakers do happen to get healthy, they could become an even better cover side than they are already becoming.

FICTION

Portland Is Finally Set To Swoon: There has been a lot of grumbling that consecutive losses to the Thunder and the Rockets could be the beginning of the end for the Blazers, who have overachieved all season long. However, when you look at their upcoming schedule, you have to think they are going to be back in first place in the Northwest Division sooner rather than later. The only game until a Feb. 7 game against the Pacers on the road in which they'll be 'dogs is against Golden State on the road on Sunday. There's a great chance to win at least five of these next seven, if not even possibly all seven. Portland's offense can still carry it to plenty of wins. This team hasn't lost three games in a row all season long, and this doesn't figure to be the time when that starts.

The Pelicans Are Worthy of Being Unerdogs Almost Every Night: We know that games against the Pistons, Magic, and Cavaliers are probably going to sway New Orleans' fortunes a bit, but just because this team has dropped nine out of 10 games doesn't mean that it should be considered one of the worst teams in the game. The Pelicans covered games against all three Texas teams in a span of five nights, and they’ve fought hard more often than not against big numbers. The last four times New Orleans was a 'dog by more than five points, it has covered.

Kevin Durant's Scoring Run Being Good for the Thunder: Sure, the Thunder are winning games, and they are doing so because Durant is wrapping up the MVP award in January by scoring at least 30 points in nine consecutive games. We're just not sure this is a good thing for Durant and his OKC mates in the long run. Durant has played 37 minutes or more in six of his last seven games, and he has been counted on to do far too much. We saw this last season in the postseason. Durant can't carry this team in a seven-game series by himself, and with PG Russell Westbrook still out, we really would have preferred to see someone else step up and shoulder some of the burden for this team for its long-term success.

L.A. Lakers (16-26 SU, 23-18-1 ATS) at Miami Heat (30-12 SU, 18-24 ATS)

Sportsbook.ag Line & Total: Miami -11 & 209

The double-digit underdog Lakers try to get a rare victory in South Beach on Thursday night when they visit the Heat.

Los Angeles has lost 13 of its past 16 games SU, but has covered in five straight contests by pumping in 110.2 PPG on 48% FG. But the Lakers have also allowed 110.6 PPG on 45% FG during this stretch, 105.8 PPG for the season (2nd-worst in league) and have been the worst rebounding team in the NBA this season with a minus-5.3 RPG margin.

Although Miami is also a poor rebounding team at minus-4.0 RPG (4th-worst in NBA) with a league-low 36.5 RPG, the team plays much better defense, allowing only 98.5 PPG (8th in NBA). The Heat also have a superior offense at 104.0 PPG (8th in league), compared to the Lakers scoring 100.6 PPG (16th in NBA), and enters this game having won three of their past four contests.

Miami also owns this series, with its 101-95 Christmas Day win making the team 7-1 SU (6-2 ATS) in the past eight meetings with Los Angeles. Miami is also 8-1 SU (7-2 ATS) in the past nine home meetings with L.A., winning and covering five straight times.

The Lakers have been a winning road wager this season at 12-10-1 ATS (8-15 SU), and are 13-5 ATS after playing four consecutive games as an underdog this season. But although the Heat are 7-13 ATS (17-3 SU) at home this season, they are 44-28 ATS after playing a home game over the past two seasons.

PF Pau Gasol (toe) is probable for the Lakers, who are still missing five guards who are out indefinitely, while the Heat will be without star SG Dwyane Wade (knee) for the fourth straight game.

The Lakers have struggled recently, but one position they have been getting consistent production from is the point guard spot. PG Kendall Marshall (10.1 PPG, 9.1 APG) has been a huge spark for this team after being called up from the D-League due to numerous injuries. Over the past six games, Marshall is averaging a double-double of 11.3 PPG and 12.0 APG, with only 3.3 TOPG (3.6 Ast/TO ratio).

Since returning from a one-game suspension, SF Nick Young (17.1 PPG, 36% threes) has exploded for 30.0 PPG (50% FG, 8-of-13 threes) over the past two games. Young led the Lakers in scoring in the first meeting with Miami as he had 20 points (4-of-7 threes) off the bench in 32 minutes.

PF Pau Gasol (16.4 PPG, 10.0 RPG, 1.5 BPG) had 13 points and 13 rebounds in that first meeting, and averages 16.0 PPG and 8.8 RPG in 24 career games versus the Heat. Despite dealing with a sore toe, Gasol has scored at least 20 points in each of the past five contests, averaging a hefty 22.0 PPG and 12.4 RPG during this stretch.

SG Jodie Meeks (14.0 PPG, 39% threes) had 17 points in the Christmas day meeting with Miami, and is averaging 16.8 PPG (50% FG) over the past five games. His three-point shooting (44% in past five games) will be needed if the Lakers are going to pull off this upset.

Rookie PF Ryan Kelly (5.8 PPG, 2.8 RPG) has started the past two games for the Lakers, and delivered with 16.7 PPG (54% FG, 4-of-10 threes) and 5.3 RPG in his past three contests. Kelly is yet another player with the three-point shooting ability to open up this Mike D’Antoni offense that makes 9.2 threes per game (5th in NBA) on a strong 36.8% clip (9th in league).

The Heat have had their stretches of rough play lately, but they have now gotten back on track despite playing without SG Dwyane Wade (18.9 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 4.7 APG) as he rests a sore knee.

PF Chris Bosh (16.3 PPG, 6.7 RPG) has really stepped up his offense with Wade out, averaging 20.7 PPG on 55% FG (7-of-15 threes) in the three games Wade has missed. Bosh had 23 points and 11 rebounds in the first meeting between these two teams and should benefit from a small Lakers frontcourt yet again on Thursday. For his career, he has pumped in 17.4 PPG and 10.2 RPG in 19 career meetings with the Lakers.

SF LeBron James (26.2 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 6.5 APG, 1.3 SPG) had just 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the Christmas day victory over L.A., but is still averaging 27.7 PPG, 7.6 RPG and 7.0 APG in 21 career games against the Lakers. James has also been on a tear recently, averaging 29.9 PPG (56% FG), 6.1 RPG and 6.0 APG over the past nine games.

SG Ray Allen (9.4 PPG) has started in the place of Dwyane Wade, and in the three games Wade has missed, Allen is averaging 11.0 PPG on a blistering 57% FG (46% threes) and 6.7 RPG. With Wade out again, Allen should have plenty of good looks against the porous Lakers defense, and he must connect on a few of them to have Miami keep up with the high-scoring Los Angeles bunch.

Thursday's Tips

Lakers at Heat - 8:00 PM EST

Los Angeles: 16-26 SU, 23-18-1 ATS
Miami: 30-12 SU, 18-24 ATS

The Lakers have turned into a solid money-maker on their current road trip, cashing in each of their first four games as Los Angeles travels to South Florida to take on the defending champion Heat. Mike D'Antoni's club has picked up outright underdog victories at Boston and Toronto with late rallies, while falling short in overtime in Monday's 102-100 defeat as 8 ½-point 'dogs.

Los Angeles is rolling the ball out of late, hitting the 'over' in five consecutive games, while allowing at least 100 points in nine straight contests. The last time the Lakers met up with the Heat on Christmas Day at Staples Center, Los Angeles hung tough but ultimately fell, 101-95. The Lakers took home the money as 9 ½-point underdogs, but L.A. has lost six of the last seven meetings with Miami since 2010.

The Heat staved off the Celtics on Tuesday, 93-86, but failed to cover as nine-point home favorites. That game was the first at home back from a six-game road swing in which Miami posted a 2-4 SU/ATS record, including four losses in the favorite role. Dwyane Wade has missed the last three games resting his ailing knee, as the Heat are 8-2 to the 'over' in the 10 contests he has sat out this season.

Since Christmas, the Heat has played just four games at the American Airlines Arena, going 3-1 SU and just 1-3 ATS. As a double-digit home favorite this season, Miami has covered four of nine times, while winning eight times in this role with the lone defeat coming to Boston back in November in overtime. Since starting December with seven straight 'overs' at home, the Heat has finished 'under' the total in each of the last three home contests.

Nuggets at Blazers - 10:30 PM EST

Denver: 20-20 SU, 18-22 ATS
Portland: 31-11 SU, 24-18 ATS

The Blazers return to the Moda Center following a four-game road trip against clubs that are likely headed to the playoffs. Portland won the first two contests at San Antonio and Dallas, but couldn't complete the "Texas Triangle" sweep in Monday's high-scoring defeat at Houston. The Blazers blew a late lead in Tuesday's 105-97 setback at Oklahoma City, while failing to cover as 6 ½-point underdogs to finish the trip at 2-2 SU/ATS.

One system that many handicappers turn to is going against home teams coming off a long road trip in the NBA. For the most part, home double-digit favorites in this situation are usually a good go-against bet, but what about teams in more manageable favorite spots from 1-8 points? Unfortunately this season, it is a coin-toss proposition, with 34 situations of home teams coming off road trips of three games or more and listed as a favorite of eight points or less are 17-17 ATS for a slight loss of profit. This is Portland's third time returning home from a lengthy road swing this season as the Blazers failed to cover in their first two opportunities in victories over the Bulls and Pelicans.

The Nuggets have been off for three days since Sunday's 117-103 setback at Phoenix as a short underdog, while Denver looks to snap a two-game skid. Brian Shaw's team is also playing with revenge tonight after getting drilled by the Blazers in their home opener, 113-98, as Portland knocked down 14 three-pointers in the victory. Denver's offense was dreadful that night, converting 32% of its shots from the floor, while missing 14 free throws.

Since a slow offensive start to the season, the Nuggets are picking up the numbers of late by hitting five straight 'overs,' while going 'over' the total in five consecutive games away from the Pepsi Center. However, Denver has struggled on the highway by losing two of its last seven road contests, but one of those victories came at Golden State as eight-point underdogs, 123-116.

Friday's Tips

January 23, 2014

Spurs at Hawks - 7:05 PM EST

San Antonio: 32-10 SU, 21-21 ATS
Atlanta: 22-19 SU, 22-19 ATS

The Spurs play 12 of their next 14 games on the road, as the annual "Rodeo Trip" begins in a week. San Antonio hits the highway for a three-game swing starting Friday in Atlanta, as the Spurs closed out their four-game homestand with their third loss of the season to the Thunder on Wednesday. Gregg Popovich's team has won nine of their past 10 contests away from the Alamo dating back to Thanksgiving, while posting a 6-3 ATS record as a road favorite in this span.

The Hawks held off the Magic on Wednesday, 112-109, as Atlanta failed to cash as 5 ½-point road favorites. However, Atlanta has thrived in the role of a home favorite of late, putting together a 6-1 ATS record, which includes outright wins this month over Miami, Indiana, and Houston. The Hawks are playing with revenge after dropping a two-point decision at the AT&T Center in early December, 102-100, but Atlanta did cash as 12-point 'dogs.

Clippers at Bulls - 8:05 PM EST

Los Angeles: 29-15 SU, 25-19 ATS
Chicago: 21-20 SU, 19-22 ATS

The Clippers are coming off their lowest-scoring output this month in Wednesday's 96-91 defeat at Charlotte, only the third loss in 11 games during January. Los Angeles continues its seven-game road swing at the United Center, as the Clips are 5-2 SU and 7-0 ATS on the highway off an away loss this season. Doc Rivers' club looks for the season sweep after L.A. drilled Chicago at Staples Center, 121-82 back in late November.

The Bulls have woken up this month with a 9-2 record to forge above the .500 mark, while winning each of their last three games. Chicago beat Cleveland for the third time this season on Wednesday, 98-87 to cash as 4 ½-point underdogs. Carlos Boozer missed that victory with a calf injury, as the power forward is listed as questionable for Friday's contest. The Bulls are starting to reclaim their home-court advantage with seven wins in the last 10 games in the Windy City, while compiling a 6-1 ATS record the past seven games in the underdog role.

Pacers at Kings - 10:05 PM EST

Indiana: 33-8 SU, 28-13 ATS
Sacramento: 15-26 SU, 18-22-1 ATS

The Kings concluded a six-game road swing winning just twice, while suffering two losses to their two best players. Rudy Gay and DeMarcus Cousins each got injured in Wednesday's 119-98 setback at Houston, the first loss to the Rockets this season in three tries. Gay is out for three-to-five days with an Achilles' injury, while Cousins is doubtful on Friday with an ankle sprain. Sacramento has covered six straight home games in the underdog role since the start of December, including outright victories over the Blazers, Heat, and Rockets in this stretch.

The Pacers started their West Coast trip with an impressive performance at Golden State, but Indiana was tripped up in Wednesday's 24-point loss at Phoenix. Frank Vogel's squad dominated Sacramento 10 days ago at home, 116-92 as 10 ½-point favorites, while the Pacers have covered five of their last six games. Indiana owns a perfect 6-0 SU/ATS off a road loss this season, while going 'under' five times with the lone 'over' needing overtime at New York back in November.

Wolves at Warriors - 10:35 PM EST

Minnesota: 20-21 SU, 22-19 ATS
Golden State: 26-17 SU, 19-22-2 ATS

The Warriors have dominated the Wolves over the last few seasons, winning seven straight meetings, including a 106-93 triumph at the Target Center in early November. However, since Golden State won 10 straight games, Mark Jackson's club has lost four of their last six contests. In this stretch, the Warriors have cashed just once, coming in a 97-87 victory at New Orleans last Saturday.

Minnesota pulled off a home-and-home sweep over beat-up Utah to creep within one game of the .500 mark. The Wolves are just 2-7 the last nine games off a victory, while putting up a 1-9 SU and 5-5 ATS this season as a road underdog. Rick Adelman's team has lost all five games in the revenge role this season, while putting up a 1-8 record against the Warriors, Clippers, Spurs, and Thunder.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Portland 114, BYU 110, 3OT-- One of the ten most interesting games I have ever seen; really. Both teams hit a tying 3-pointer in last 0:15 of an OT, with both teams declining to foul. Haws scored 48 for BYU; Sharp had 27 points in 35:00 for Portland, and he didn't start.

-- Washington 80, Oregon 76-- Ducks have now lost five games in a row.

-- Arizona State 79, Utah 75-- ASU's subs were 5-7 from the arc. Carson had 23, as he single-handedly tries to carry Sun Devils into NCAAs.

-- Chattanooga 84, Elon 63-- Moccasins are 7-0 in SoCon under first-year coach Wade, a former VCU assistant.

-- St John's/Penn State both got first conference win; both are possible to be the next landing spot for Bruce Pearl.

-- Irvine 72, Northridge 66-- Anteaters have never been in NCAAs, but are 4-0 in Big West and the early favorites to win that league.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

13) There is an NHL game at Dodger Stadium Saturday night; high in LA Saturday is expected to be 77, low around 52. Not sure how it all works, but the game starts after dark- is there a maximum temp the game can be played at, before it is postponed?

12) There are also NHL games in the baseball park in the Bronx over the next week, where warm temps will be no issue whatsoever. Outdoor NHL games have become very popular.

11) Marlins’ president David Samson (former stepson of owner Jeffrey Loria) apparently took July-August off last summer to appear on the CBS reality series Survivor, which was filmed in the Phillipines and starts airing late next month.

Not often the president of a big league ballclub takes July-August off, seeing as the trading deadline is July 31, but the Marlins aren’t your normal organization, and they’re probably better off without Samson anyway. I’m sure the taxpayers of south Florida are thrilled they paid for a new ballpark for a team run by this guy and his weasel stepfather.

10) Read this week where the Bronx baseball team took in $60M less in ticket revenues in 2013 than it did the year before, which is a big part of why they abandoned hopes of staying under the $189M luxury tax limit to sign Tanaka. If he makes them a contender, they’ll easily make up his $22M salary in ticket sales and improved TV ratings for the YES Network.

9) Peyton Manning is the only player in this year’s Super Bowl who has already won a Super Bowl ring. Seahawks are the first Super Bowl team since 1990 with no players who have even played in a Super Bowl.

8) Former Titans’ coach Mike Munchak signed on as OL coach for the Steelers, good get for Mike Tomlin’s staff.

7) Golfer Steven Webster started the Qatar Open (European Tour) with a double-eagle on the 10th hole Wednesday, his first hole of the tournament. Don’t often see an albatross anytime, much less on the first hole of a tournament.

6) Kevin Durant is averaging 35.6 ppg, 5.6 apg since Russell Westbrook got hurt; he was averaging 28.1/4.8 before Westbrook’s injury.

5) Oakland Raiders are being sued by their own cheerleaders, which could be a first; ladies are suing for a variety of offenses. Not the best sign for an organization when stuff like this happens.

"The lawsuit filed Wednesday in Alameda County Superior Court alleges that the organization withholds all pay from the Raiderettes until the end of the season, does not pay for all hours worked and forces the cheerleaders to pay many of their own business expenses."......from ESPN.com

4) 71-year old Mike Pope, who was tight end coach for the Giants’ for a very long time, has re-surfaced in Dallas. Giants went out of their way to say that OC Kevin Gilbride wasn’t fired, but then it came out last week that if he didn’t “retire” he was going to get the boot. Semantics; guys like that do not quit, unless they leave for a better job. Gilbride is 62, way too young to retire from a job that lucrative. Hell, Pope is 71 and he still wants to coach.

3) We’re almost to the point in the basketball season where we can start speculating on where Bruce Pearl will resurface as a head coach next season; his show cause order from the NCAA ends after this season, so he’ll get hired by someone. St John’s? Auburn? Washington State? Pearl is an excellent coach whose NCAA violations seem miniscule, given stuff that’s gone on since then.

2) When the Browns fired Rob Chudzinski after his first year as head coach, I figured they had someone in mind who they would quickly scoop up; why else can a guy after only one season on the job? 26 days later, they finally named a coach, guy who was a high school coach 13 years ago.

Now Art Briles/Gus Malzahn were also high school coaches and so was Mike Holmgren at one time, but the Browns look very foolish right now.

1) Back in 1979, Tigers had a first-year manager named Les Moss who had been a pitching coach; he was 27-26 when Detroit fired him, for no other reason than Sparky Anderson became available and Anderson was a great manager, so they scooped him up and sent Moss packing.

Felt bad for Moss, who never got another chance to run a team, but at least those Tigers had a plan to become better, and they did, winning the World Series five years later. The Browns? They hired a former high school coach and really appear to be clutching at straws.

Thunder at Celtics: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Boston Celtics (+6, 195)

The Oklahoma City Thunder have risen to the top of the Western Conference with a five-game winning streak and look to add another when they visit the injury-depleted Boston Celtics on Friday. NBA leading scorer Kevin Durant continued his hot streak with 36 points in a 111-105 win at San Antonio on Wednesday and is averaging 40.4 over the last five games. The Celtics are 2-12 over the last 14 contests and are expected to be without second-leading scorer Avery Bradley due to an ankle injury.

The Celtics won at Washington in overtime on Wednesday without Bradley and Rajon Rondo, who was rested on the second of a back-of-back. Jeff Green, who spent his first 3 1/2 seasons with the Oklahoma City franchise, leads Boston against a Thunder squad near the end of a stretch with seven games in 10 days. Durant scored at least 30 points in nine straight outings since registering 21 in the 119-96 victory over Boston on Jan. 5 at home.

TV:
7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Oklahoma (Oklahoma City), CSN New England (Boston)

ABOUT THE THUNDER (33-10):
Durant averages 31 points and 5.1 assists overall and is shooting 52.8 percent – 41.3 from 3-point range – since Christmas Day. Serge Ibaka is averaging 17.2 points over the last five games - 14.3 overall - while Reggie Jackson scored 27 against Boston earlier this month. The Thunder stand fourth in the league in scoring (105.5) and second in rebounding (46.5) without second-leading scorer Russell Westbrook (arthroscopic knee surgery) for almost a month.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (14-29):
Green, who averages 16.2 points, scored 39 in the victory Wednesday to carry the Celtics without Rondo, Bradley and injured guard Jerryd Bayless (left big toe). Rondo should be back in the lineup after collecting 15 points and 13 assists while shooting 7-of-27 from the field over three games since returning from knee surgery. Jared Sullinger has recorded 14.1 points and 11 rebounds over the last eight, with five of his 12 double-doubles coming in that span.

TRENDS:

* Home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Thunder are 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.
* Under is 4-1 in Celtics last five home games.
* Thunder are 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Boston F Chris Johnson has totaled 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting in two games since being signed to a 10-day contract on Jan. 17.

2. Thunder F Jeremy Lamb, who has come off the bench in all 43 games, is averaging 10.6 points since Christmas and 9.8 overall.

3. Oklahoma City is 11-2 against Eastern Conference teams and the Celtics are 3-15 against Western opponents.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Thunder 101, Celtics 83-- Without Durant or Westbrook.

-- Knicks 125, Bobcats 96-- Anthony scored 62 points against a team that wouldn't double team him until they were down 35.

-- Magic 114, Lakers 105-- Lakers are 16-28 and sinking fast.

-- Jordan Spieth leads the golf tournament in San Diego after shooting 63 on Friday. Must be fun to be that good at something.

-- Nets 107, Mavericks 106-- Brooklyn won nine of its last ten games.

-- Minnesota 121, Golden State 120-- Will be sad day for NBA if Wolves can't keep Kevin Love next season. He had a great game here.
