Game of the Day: Spurs at Rockets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Houston Rockets (-1.5, 211)

The Houston Rockets had a rough weekend against the Memphis Grizzlies and things don’t get any easier when they host the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday. The Rockets are one of the highest scoring teams in the league but were held to an average of 84 points in back-to-back losses to the Grizzlies. The Spurs are battling through injuries and dropped to 1-1 on their three-game road trip with a loss at Miami on Sunday.

San Antonio is down three starters with Kawhi Leonard (hand), Tiago Splitter (shoulder) and Danny Green out (hand) but has enough depth to cover the gaps against weaker clubs. The Spurs have a tendency to get in trouble against teams with legitimate championship aspirations and have suffered their last three losses against Portland, Oklahoma City and Miami. The Rockets want to be one of those teams with championship aspirations but are still working on consistency. “It’s just so frustrating,” Chandler Parsons told reporters. “We can be so good one night and bad the next. That is something that we have to figure out collectively.”

LINE HISTORY:
The Rockets opened as 1.5-point home favorites while the total was posted at 211 points.

POWER RANKINGS:
Spurs (-14.0) - Rockets (-11.0) + Home Court (-3.0) = Pick

KEY INJURIES:
Spurs: Kawhi Leonard (Out - shoulder), Danny Green (Out - hand), Tiago Splitter (Out - shoulder). Rockets: Francisco Garcia (Questionable - knee), Ronnie Brewer (Doubtful - calf), Omer Asik - (Out - thigh)

WHAT BOOKS SAY:
"Seeing a bit more money on the short home favorite in this game. Spurs are off a very disappointing effort in a revenge spot versus the Heat on Sunday - the first time they’ve played the Heat since their seven-game championship series lost back in June. I believe our bettors will be inclined to fade the Spurs after seeing that lackluster performance in a game the Spurs most assuredly wanted to win and came with max effort." - Peter Childs, Sportsbook.ag.

WHY BET THE SPURS (33-11 SU, 22-22 ATS, 26-17-1 O/U):
San Antonio blew out Atlanta 105-79 to start its road trip but could not muster the same effort on the defensive end in an NBA Finals rematch against the Heat on Sunday. “The first and third quarter were basically the same,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters. “We didn’t do a very good job of starting out defensively. It’s a bad combination if we’re not disciplined enough defensively.” San Antonio ranks fifth in points allowed, at 96.9 points against per game.

WHY BET THE ROCKETS (29-17 SU, 22-22-2 ATS, 21-23-2 O/U):
Houston’s starters all scored at least 13 points in the Dec. 25 meeting and James Harden and Chandler Parsons combined to go 8-for-12 from 8-point range. Parsons set an NBA record with 10 3-pointers in a half on Friday against Memphis but the Rockets still suffered an 88-87 home loss, and things got even worse when he cooled off the next night and Houston fell 99-81 on the road. Houston has taken each of the first two meetings this season while scoring an average of 111.5 points

TRENDS:

* Over is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings in Houston.
* Road team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
* Spurs are 0-4 ATS in the last 4 meetings.
* Underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.

CONSENSUS PICK:
55 percent of bets are on the Spurs (+1.5) while 60 percent of bets are on the Over.

Spurs are 9-1 ATS coming off a loss this season
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The San Antonio Spurs are the only team in the NBA that haven't lost back-to-back games this season and it's a scenario that has allowed Spurs backers to cash in.

Not only are the Spurs 10-0 SU after a loss this season, they are 9-1 ATS.

The Spurs - who are coming off a loss Sunday at Miami - are in Houston to take on the Rockets Tuesday, where San Antonio is listed as a 1.5-point road dog.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Road teams, especially faves, are red hot ATS in NBA
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Road teams are 30-21-1 against the spread (ATS) over the last seven days (ending Monday night) for a profitable winning margin of 58.82 percent. Road faves are even hotter at 14-7 ATS during that span for a lucrative winning mark of 66.67.

The Indiana Pacers are the only road favorite on the board Tuesday night after opening at -9.5 at the Los Angeles Lakers.

Thunder at Heat - 7:05 PM EST

Oklahoma City: 36-10 SU, 27-19 ATS
Miami: 32-12 SU, 19-25 ATS

The Thunder is clicking right now even with Russell Westbrook sidelined due to a knee injury. Oklahoma City has won eight consecutive games, including Monday's comeback victory over Atlanta, as Kevin Durant has eclipsed the 30-point mark in 11 straight contests. Durant's late jumper against the Hawks gave OKC the 111-109 win, but the Thunder failed to cover as 10-point favorites, snapping a seven-game ATS hot streak. However, Oklahoma City looks to end a six-game skid against Miami dating back to the 2012 NBA Finals.

The last time the Thunder defeated the Heat was in Game 1 of those Finals, as Miami captured the final four games of that series to claim the second title in franchise history. The Heat swept the season series in 2012-13, including a 103-97 triumph as 2 ½-point home favorites on Christmas day. Erik Spoelstra's team has won the first three games on their current homestand, topped off by a 12-point victory over the Spurs on Sunday. The Heat owns an 8-1 SU and 5-4 ATS home record against Western Conference foes with the lone defeat coming to the Warriors in early January.

Rockets at Mavericks - 8:35 PM EST

Houston: 30-17 SU, 23-22-2 ATS
Dallas: 26-20 SU, 26-20 ATS

The Rockets play with no rest against another Lone Star State foe following Tuesday's home victory over the Spurs. James Harden missed the game with a thumb injury, as his status is up in the air for Wednesday's matchup at Dallas, the final regular season meeting between the two state rivals. After Houston took the first meeting in early November, Dallas has won the last two matchups, as all three games have finished 'over' the total.

The Mavericks are seeking consecutive victories since putting together a three-game winning streak earlier this month, as Dallas is just 3-4 the last seven trips to the court. Rick Carlisle's club shot a scorching 58% from the field in Sunday's 116-106 home triumph over the Pistons, while covering as 6 ½-point favorites. Dallas is scoring plenty of points at the American Airlines Center of late, topping the 110-point mark in five straight home contests (3-2 to the 'over').

Bobcats at Nuggets - 9:05 PM EST

Charlotte: 19-27 SU, 24-20-2 ATS
Denver: 22-21 SU, 21-22 ATS

The Bobcats head west for a four-game road swing as Charlotte tries to get on track. After leading scorer Kemba Walker sprained his ankle in an overtime loss to the Heat, the Bobcats captured consecutive home 'dog wins over the Raptors and Clippers. However, Charlotte was humbled in back-to-back losses to New York and Chicago, while scoring 96 points or less in three straight games. The Bobcats are just 1-7 SU/ATS the last eight road underdog opportunities, while going 7-1 to the 'over' in the past eight away contests.

The Nuggets have won two straight following a three-game skid, including Sunday's 125-117 triumph at Sacramento as 3 ½-point road favorites. Denver has come back to life recently by winning eight of their last 12, while returning to an uptempo style by cashing the 'over' in 11 of the past 13 contests. The Nuggets have lost only once to the Bobcats at the Pepsi Center in eight meetings, as all seven victories by Denver have come by double-digits.

Bulls at Spurs - 9:35 PM EST

Chicago: 22-22 SU, 20-24 ATS
San Antonio: 33-12 SU, 22-23 ATS

The Bulls head to the highway for six consecutive games against Western Conference foes, as the first stop takes place in San Antonio. Chicago started January winning nine of their first 11 games, but the Bulls have dropped two of their last three contests, including Monday's home defeat to Minnesota. Since Christmas, Tom Thibodeau's club owns a solid 6-1 SU/ATS record away from the United Center, including outright underdog victories over the Nets, Grizzlies, and Cavaliers.

The Spurs return to the AT&T Center following Tuesday's defeat at Houston, as San Antonio will play just two home games before heading back on the road for its annual "Rodeo Trip" on Monday. Gregg Popovich's squad has covered just once in the last four home contests, while dropping games to the Thunder and Blazers at the Alamo in the past two weeks. The Bulls have held their own against the Spurs over the last four seasons, winning four of the past seven matchups, but San Antonio swept the two-game set last season.

Game of the Day: Thunder at Heat
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Miami Heat (-4, 204)

Kevin Durant's recent scoring barrage has moved him front and center in the race for the NBA's most valuable player award. On Wednesday Durant will come face-to-face with the greatest challenge to his MVP quest as he leads the Oklahoma City Thunder into Miami to face LeBron James and the powerhouse Heat. Durant has scored 30 or more points in 11 straight games, the main catalyst behind the Thunder's eight-game winning streak.

Durant is on the fast track to his fourth NBA scoring title, but faces one of his toughest assignments of the year - tasked with scoring on, and defending, the four-time league MVP and two-time defending NBA champion. James' numbers have taken a tumble in recent years, but he remains the most productive player on a team that sits second in the Eastern Conference. James will have help, too, as Dwyane Wade returns to the starting lineup.

LINE HISTORY:
Miami opened -4.5 and was bet down to -4. The total opened 204 in Las Vegas and was bet down to 203.5.

POWER RANKINGS:
Thunder (-12.5) - Heat (-14.3) + Home Court (-3.0) = Heat -4.8

KEY INJURIES:
Thunder: Russell Westbrook (Out - knee), Heat: Dwyane Wade (Probable - knee)

WHAT BOOKS SAY:
"Most of the main rival teams at the top - Indiana, San Antonio, L.A. Clippers - would be +5 and bigger in Miami, but Oklahoma City and Durant are getting respect for how they are playing without Westbrook. Even though Durant is getting all the accolades for his recent play, and rightfully so – hes the current MVP frontrunner, the Thunder have the inside matchup edge with Perkins and Ibaka, plus Collison and Adams off the bench." -- Aron Black, Bet365.com.

WHY BET THE THUNDER (36-10 SU, 27-19 ATS, 22-24 O/U):
Durant isn't just shooting his way to superstardom - he's thinking his way around defensive schemes designed to shut him down. Durant hit the game-winning shot in Monday's narrow victory over the Atlanta Hawks, and said afterward that he was successful because he had seen the game-ending defensive setup before. "This is the third team we played that's been under that San Antonio umbrella," he said of the Hawks' approach. "They brought that (double-team). And they were bold enough to do it in the fourth quarter." Durant averages 29.3 points in 12 career games against the Heat.

WHY BET THE HEAT (32-12 SU, 19-25 ATS, 27-17 O/U):
Wade was given the green light to join the starting five after coming off the bench in Sunday's one-sided win over the San Antonio Spurs. Wade, who scored eight points in 24 minutes in a reserve role, relishes the challenge of facing the team with the best record in the West. "I asked (head coach Eric Spoelstra) to take me out as a starter that one game, but I didn't ask him to do it the whole year," Wade told reporters Monday. "So we can stop that conversation." Miami is an Eastern Conference-best 12-2 against West foes.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Thunder are 0-6 ATS in the last six meetings.
* Thunder are 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings in Miami.

CONSENSUS PICK:
54 % on Oklahoma City +4, 75 % on Over 204

Suns at Pacers - 7:05 PM EST

Phoenix: 27-18 SU, 30-14-1 ATS
Indiana: 35-9 SU, 29-15 ATS

The Suns wrap up a four-game road swing tonight in Indianapolis looking for a perfect 4-0 trip. Phoenix rallied from a 20-point deficit in Sunday's victory at Cleveland, as that comeback has spurred the Suns' offense to a 124-point and 126-point effort in wins over Philadelphia and Milwaukee, respectably. In last night's triumph against the Bucks, the Suns knocked down 12 three-pointers, while shooting at least 53% from the floor the last two games.

The last time Phoenix met up with Indiana was eight days ago in the Valley, as the Suns dominated the Pacers, 124-100 as 5 ½-point home underdogs. All five Phoenix starters finished in double-figures, while Markieff Morris came off the bench to score 20 points, as the Suns burned the Pacers by knocking down 54% of their shots from the field. The Suns have covered six straight meetings with the Pacers, including three consecutive visits to Indianapolis.

The Pacers return to Bankers Life Fieldhouse following a 3-2 SU and 2-3 ATS West Coast swing, capped off by a 104-92 victory over the Lakers as 10 ½-point favorites. Frank Vogel's defense struggled in the middle three games of the trip, allowing at least 100 points to the Suns, Kings, and Nuggets, while finishing 'over' the total in those three contests. Now, Indiana comes back to the Hoosier State where it has won 21 of 22 games, while covering nine of its past 10 home contests.

Cavaliers at Knicks - 8:05 PM EST

Cleveland: 16-29 SU, 19-26 ATS
New York: 18-27 SU, 19-26 ATS

All of the sudden, the Knicks have woken up with three straight wins, although the three victories came against below .500 competition (Bobcats, Lakers, and Celtics). New York continues its eight-game homestand which concludes with Miami on Saturday, as the Knicks have gone 5-1 to the 'over' so far through the first six games. Mike Woodson's team is seeking its second winning streak of at least four games this season with a victory tonight, as the Knicks have scored at least 110 points in the first three wins.

The Cavaliers are going backwards of late, dropping four of five on a recent five-game homestand. Cleveland is coming off consecutive losses to Phoenix and New Orleans as short favorites, while scoring 93 points or less in four straight games (4-0 to 'under). Anderson Varejao missed Tuesday's loss to the Pelicans with a knee injury, as the Cleveland center is questionable for tonight. The Cavs put together a 3-2 SU/ATS record on its last road trip, which included victories over the Nuggets and Jazz.

The last time these teams hooked up at Quicken Loans Arena in mid-December, the Cavs dominated the Knicks, 109-94 as 2 ½-point favorites. Kyrie Irving burned New York for 37 points and 11 assists, while the Cavs shot 57% from the floor. The Knicks attempted only five free throws in the loss, but New York has beaten Cleveland four straight times at Madison Square Garden.

Clippers at Warriors - 10:35 PM EST

Los Angeles: 33-15 SU, 28-20 ATS
Golden State: 27-19 SU, 20-24-2 ATS

The Warriors currently own the seventh-best record in the Western Conference, as many pundits predicted Golden State could be a team that could play in the NBA Finals. Mark Jackson's team still is playing a shade under .600 basketball, but the Warriors need to get on track after losing three of the first four games on their current homestand. Golden State put up just 85 points in Tuesday's three-point defeat to Washington, the fewest points scored at Oracle Arena this season. From a pointspread perspective, the Warriors own a 2-7 ATS record since winning 10 straight games from late December through early January.

The Clippers hit the road again after a home victory over the Wizards last night, 110-103, but failed to cover as eight-point favorites. Los Angeles finished its Grammys road trip 5-2 SU/ATS, but only two of those victories came against teams above .500 (Chicago and Toronto). The Clips have lost four straight visits to the Bay Area, including a testy 105-103 defeat on Christmas Night at Oracle Arena. Los Angeles barely cashed as three-point underdogs, while the two teams finished 'over' the total for the seventh straight meeting.

Thursday's NBA betting news and notes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Suns at Indiana Pacers (-10, 199)

Suns forward Markieff Morris may be the key for their supporters. The Suns are 12-3 ATS when their sixth man scores 15 or more points with the team 17-11-1 ATS when he doesn’t. Morris is averaging 16.8 points over his last five.

The Suns are 6-1 ATS on zero days rest and an impressive 8-2 ATS against teams with a .600 or better record. The last time these two trends crossed, the Suns beat the Rockets in Houston 97-88 as 9.5-point dogs.

The Indiana Pacers, 16-6 ATS at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, are coming off a road trip where they went just 3-2 SU and 2-3 ATS. "We're all real tired,” said center Roy Hibbert. “There were some games we dropped that we should have won on this trip. We'll get better."

The Pacers have given up 100-points only eight times all season. One of those was a 124-100 loss to the Phoenix Suns last Wednesday night on a 196.5-point total. All eight of those games have been on the road.

Cleveland Cavaliers at New York Knicks (-5.5, 196.5)

* Cavs coach Mike Brown was not impressed with his team’s fighting spirit following Tuesday’s 100-89 loss as a 2.5-point favorite in Cleveland. "Our competitive spirit is non-existent," said Brown. "Maybe I need to shake some things up."

* Cavs center Anderson Varejao is questionable for Thursday's game after missing Tuesday’s loss to New Orleans, his first missed game of the year. Cleveland went 29-27-2 ATS in 58 games the Brazilian missed last year.

* The Knicks got some payback Tuesday versus Boston. “It was kind of personal, the way they beat us the last time,'' forward Kenyon Martin said referring to the team’s 114-77 loss to the Celtics at MSG in December. ''So we wanted a little get-back.'' The Knicks lost 109-94 to the Cavs the last time they met in mid-December.

* The Knicks are 7-1 ATS after both a SU win and scoring 100 points in their previous game both of which happened Tuesday in their 109-94 win over the Celtics.

Los Angeles Clippers at Golden State Warriors (-5.5, 212)

* The Clippers are showing their elite potential, scoring and winning without All-Star Chris Paul. The Clips are 9-3 SU and 8-4 ATS without their leader and the Over has hit in nine of the 12 games with L.A. scoring less than 109 points only three times.

* The Over has hit in the last seven meetings between these two clubs including a 105-103 Warrior win on a 207.5-point total on Christmas Day.

* The Golden State Warriors have scored less than 100 points, 15 times this season. Nine of those 15 have come back-to-back (and one three-game streak). The Warriors only scored 85 points in an 88-85 loss to Washington Tuesday night.

* The Warriors are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 against teams with a .600 record or better but did beat Portland 103-88 as 5.5-point home favorites this past Sunday.
