Saturday’s six-pack

Some college football trends to ponder…….

— Underdogs are 5-2-1 vs spread in last 8 Kansas State-Iowa State games.

— Favorites covered four of last five Stanford-Arizona games.

— Home side won eight of last nine Clemson-Florida State games.

— Georgia is 2-7-1 vs spread in last 10 games as an underdog.

— Ohio State is 11-4 vs spread in games off a SU loss.

— Underdogs covered five of last six Tennessee-South Carolina games.

Saturday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) I’d be curious to know the winning %age of fantasy football teams that own various star players; for example, on November 3, 2013, Nick Foles threw seven TDs in a game for Philly against the Raiders in Oakland. Seven TDs; it would be good to have Foles on your fantasy team, right?

Foles was on my team that year, but we lost that week; I’d be curious to know what %age of fantasy teams that owned Foles lost that week? Stuff like this interests me.

12) Jimmer Fredette made a comment in an article this week that he wasn’t highly recruited coming out of Glens Falls HS in upstate NY. I live 45 miles south of Glens Falls; I’m not sure why he said that, because I remember watching Jimmer play down in Florida in AAU Nationals and I was talking with a St John’s assistant and they loved Jimmer.

There was a school of thought amongst some coaches that because Fredette’s family is Mormon, he was signed and sealed for BYU. Maybe fewer teams offered him a scholarship because of that, but everyone wanted him, believe me. Jimmer is playing in the Chinese pro league this year, by the way.

11) In Game 2 of the 1980 World Series, Steve Carlton threw 159 pitches in a 6-4 loss to the Royals. 159 freakin’ pitches; in eight innings, Carlton allowed 10 hits, walked six, struck out 10.

If that happened today, how long before the manager/pitching coach were either fired by the owner or sued by the player’s agent (or both)?

10) If you’ve been to Las Vegas, there is a strip-**** like gift shop on the corner of Sahara and Las Vegas Blvd; you’ve seen shots of it on TV. The two acres that shop sits on recently sold for $50M; it is very close to the Stratosphere, across the Strip from the SLS Hotel.

$50M for that area; makes you wonder if another hotel will be built there soon. A new hotel is opening in that area in early December; totally Asian-themed and geared towards attracting the 200,000+ people who fly from China to Las Vegas each year.

9) ESPNU was doing ACC Media Day while I typed this up; in one segment they had Miami coach Jim Larranaga on, asking him what restaurants he goes to in Miami, silly stuff.

Then they had Roy Williams and Mike Krzyzewski on in separate segments and they are diagramming offenses on a telestrator like they’re too good to be asked the silly stuff. Why can’t they can’t ask those two where they eat in Chapel Hill/Durham?

The lower tier ACC coaches (BC, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest) were lucky to even get on air.

8) Eagles’ coach Doug Pederson played 10 years in the NFL, but started only 17 games, all in 1999-2000. First four years he was in the NFL? No starts. Last four years? No starts. He was 2-7 as a starter for the ’99 Eagles, 1-7 for the ’00 Browns.

Best coaches weren’t always the best players. Playing? Coaching? Two different skills.

7) Cleveland Cavaliers’ NBA championship rings are really, really big. They look like you’d get carpal tunnel if you wore one for too long.

6) Speaking of the Cavs, JR Smith looks like the happiest person in America, like he put one over on the authorities and he and everyone else knows it. He is making $12.8M to stand on the wing and jack jumpers whenever Lebron gets him the ball. It is good to be trusted by the King.

5) Tampa Bay Bucs’ OC Todd Monken was head coach at Southern Miss the last three years; he did a good job building up the USM program, but jumped to the NFL this year. I’d love to know if he is enjoying himself, if not having to recruit anymore is worth not being the boss.

4) 36-year old Steve Blake still hopes to make it back to the NBA to continue his long career, but for now, he is playing pro ball in Australia.

3) Singer Tim McGraw has a white Mercedes convertible with license plate “NYMTS69”. His dad was Tug McGraw, the terrific relief pitcher who pitched for both the Mets and Phillies.

2) Los Angeles Rams are 3-0 this season when they have 2+ takeaways, 0-4 when they do not.

1— I mention this now and then, but lot of football coaches are gypsies; here is where Giant coach Ben McAdoo’s journey took him, before he landed in the NFL:

2001- Michigan State, 2002- Fairfield, 2003- Pitt, 2004- Akron, 2005- Stanford

Five years, five jobs, five different states. Tough way to make a living.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Amara Darboh caught eight passes for a career-high 165 yards, and De'Veon Smith ran for two touchdowns to help No. 2 Michigan beat Michigan State 32-23 on Saturday.

The Wolverines (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten) scored every time they had the ball in the first half, beating the Spartans (2-6, 0-5) for only the second time in the last nine meetings. Michigan avenged last year's loss in which the Spartans scored the winning touchdown on the final play when the Wolverines botched a punt.

Michigan won the Paul Bunyan Trophy for the first time since 2012.

Michigan led 30-10 in the fourth before the Spartans scored a pair of touchdowns, the last of which came with only a second left. Michigan State attempted a 2-point conversion and fumbled, and Jabrill Peppers returned it the other way for a defensive conversion.

Michigan State's LJ Scott rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown.

NO. 3 CLEMSON 37, NO. 12 FLORIDA STATE 34

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Deshaun Watson had 430 yards of total offense and Clemson held off Florida State.

The junior completed 27 of 43 passes for 378 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. His 34-yard pass to Jordan Leggett with 2:02 remaining gave Clemson the lead. Watson also had 52 yards rushing on 17 carries, and Leggett had 122 yards on five receptions.

It is the second straight game that Watson has had over 400 yards of offense against Florida State. He had 404 yards last year in a 23-13 victory. He is the first quarterback to beat Florida State in consecutive seasons since Oklahoma's Landry Jones in 2010-11.

Wayne Gallman had 82 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns to help the Tigers (8-0, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) extend their regular-season winning streak to 22 games.

The Seminoles (5-3, 2-3) fell short despite Dalvin Cook's career-high four touchdowns. The junior had 136 of his 169 yards in the second half and had two touchdown runs of 40-plus yards.

NO. 4 WASHINGTON 31, NO. 17 UTAH 24

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Dante Pettis returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown with 3:25 left and Washington held off Utah 3to remain undefeated.

After Utah tied it at 24 with 9:07 left, Washington (8-0, 5-0 Pac-12) pinned the Utes on their own 1 on quarterback Jake Browning's pooch punt. The Utes (7-2, 4-2) went three-and-out and punted to Pettis, who ran parallel toward the far sideline, broke a tackle and outran everyone else.

Browning threw for 186 yards and two touchdowns, and Myles Gaskin ran for 151 and a touchdown.

Utah quarterback Troy Williams threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns, and Joe Williams continued his remarkable post-retirement career with 172 rushing yards and a touchdown.

NO. 5 LOUISVILLE 32, VIRGINIA 25

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Lamar Jackson floated a 29-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Smith with 13 seconds left and Louisville survived a frenetic finish.

Jackson's fourth touchdown pass kept the Cardinals (7-1, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) in the College Football Playoff picture, and couldn't have hurt the Heisman Trophy frontrunner's candidacy. Virginia (2-6, 1-3) scored with 1:57 remaining and used a 2-point conversion to take a 25-24 lead.

Jackson did not have one of his best days, getting sacked five times and turning the ball over twice, but on the final drive, he ran for 18 yards, hit Cole Hikutini in traffic for 5 yards on fourth-and-3 and ran twice more for 16 yards before hitting Smith in the end zone.

NO. 6 OHIO STATE 24, NORTHWESTERN 20

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Curtis Samuel had a 3-yard touchdown run with 9:43 left to give Ohio State the lead, and J.T. Barrett converted two key third downs on a game-sealing drive.

After being upset by Penn State last week, the Buckeyes struggled against another multi-touchdown underdog. The Buckeyes (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) punted on five straight drives in one stretch, but responded to Northwestern tying it at 17 with a touchdown drive, capped by Samuel.

Northwestern (4-4, 3-2) then got to the Ohio State 3, but settled for Jack Mitchell's 33-yard field goal to close to 24-20 with 3:31 left.

Barrett was 21 for 32 for 223 yards, but didn't complete a pass over 19 yards until the fourth quarter. Mike Weber rushed 14 times for 87 yards and two touchdowns.

TEXAS 35, NO. 8 BAYLOR 34

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Trent Domingue kicked a 39-yard field goal with 46 seconds left and Texas upset Baylor to hand the Bears their first loss.

For the second straight season, coach Charlie Strong and the Longhorns (4-4, 2-4 Big 12) beat Baylor (6-1, 3-1). This time Texas also dealt a blow to the Big 12's hopes of putting a team in the College Football Playoff. Both of the conference's remaining unbeaten teams lost Saturday, with No. 10 West Virginia going down at Oklahoma State.

D'Onta Foreman rushed for a career-best 250 yards and two touchdowns for the Longhorns, They scored with 7:03 left on 7-yard pass from Shane Buechele to Andrew Beck to make it 34-32. The Bears stuffed Tyrone Swoopes trying to run for a 2-point conversion.

Seth Russell had 364 yards passing and running and accounted for three touchdowns for Baylor.

NO. 9. TEXAS A&M 52, NEW MEXICO STATE 10

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Christian Kirk returned two punts for touchdowns and had a scoring catch for Texas A&M.

Kirk returned punts for 70 and 73 yards to become the first player in school history with two punt return scores in a game. He has a school-record four in his career.

Trevor Knight found Kirk on a 3-yard reception in the corner of the end zone in the second quarter to put Texas A&M (7-1) up 24-0.

Tyler Rogers threw for 138 yards and a touchdown and ran for 40 yards for New Mexico State (2-6).

OKLAHOMA STATE 37, NO. 10 WEST VIRGINIA 20

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) - Mason Rudolph threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score for Oklahoma State.

Rudolph completed 26 of 36 passes for 273 yards. James Washington had six catches for 117 yards, Chris Lacy caught two touchdown passes, and Jalen McCleskey matched a career high with 11 receptions for the Cowboys (6-2, 4-1 Big 12). It the 100th career victory for Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy.

West Virginia's Skyler Howard passed for 212 yards, but he threw two interceptions and lost a fumble for the Mountaineers (6-1, 3-1).

NO. 11 WISCONSIN 23, NO. 7 NEBRASKA 17, OT

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Dare Ogunbowale scored on an 11-yard run in overtime, and Wisconsin held on to hand Nebraska its first loss of the season.

The Badgers (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) stopped Nebraska on fourth-and-8 from the 23 after defensive back D'Cota Dixon swatted away a pass to the end zone from Tommy Armstrong Jr. intended for Stanley Morgan Jr.

Dixon's giddy teammates rushed from the sideline to meet the safety in the end zone to celebrate. Tested Wisconsin picked up its third victory over a Top 10 program.

Nebraska (7-1, 4-1) overcame a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Drew Brown's 35-yard field goal with 3:43 left tied it at 17.

WYOMING 30, NO. 13 BOISE STATE 28

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - Defensive tackle Chase Appleby sacked Brett Rypien and forced a fumble for a safety with 1:25 left to lift Wyoming past Boise State.

It was Wyoming's first win over the Broncos in 11 games between the two teams. Thousands of fans swarmed the field and the Cowboys' players as the final seconds ticked off.

Josh Allen completed 18 of 31 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns, and Brian Hill ran for 146 yards for the Cowboys (6-2, 4-0 Mountain West).

Rypien completed 22 of 35 passes for 295 yards, and he also caught a 33-yard TD pass on a trick play for Boise State (7-1, 3-1). Jeremey McNichols ran for 143 yards and two TDs, and Jake Hollister caught six passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns.

NO. 14 FLORIDA 24, GEORGIA 10

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Jordan Scarlett scored for the sixth consecutive game, Antonio Callaway had the first rushing touchdown of his career and Florida used a dominant defensive effort to beat Georgia.

Playing just their second game in four weeks, the Gators won their third straight in the ''World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.'' It was Florida's 21st victory against the Bulldogs in the last 27 years.

The Gators (6-1, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) pressured freshman quarterback Jacob Eason and stuffed Nick Chubb on just about every carry. Georgia (4-4, 2-4) lost for the fourth time in five games.

Florida's Luke Del Rio, coming off a three-interception performance against Missouri, completed 15 of 25 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown.

NO. 15 AUBURN 40, MISSISSIPPI 29

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Kamryn Pettway ran for a career-high 236 yards and a touchdown, and Sean White passed for 247 yards for Auburn.

Ole Miss' Chad Kelly threw for a school-record 465 yards, beating Archie Manning's previous mark of 436 yards set in 1969. Kelly also threw three touchdown passes and one interception.

But the Rebels couldn't keep up with Auburn, which finished with 554 total yards. The Tigers once again gave a heavy workload to Pettway, a sophomore who responded by smashing through the Ole Miss defense with his 240-pound body time after time.

Auburn (6-2, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) won its fifth straight, while Ole Miss (3-5, 1-4) lost its third in a row.

NO. 16 OKLAHOMA 56, KANSAS 3

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - Baker Mayfield passed for 236 yards and four touchdowns and Oklahoma overcame a sluggish to take sole possession of first place in the Big 12.

Receiver Dede Westbrook extended his hot streak for the Sooners, scoring on a 71-yard punt return and a 41-yard catch as Oklahoma won its 13th straight Big 12 game.

Losses by West Virginia and Baylor earlier Saturday put Oklahoma (6-2, 5-0) into the lead in the conference. Oklahoma is 5-0 in Big 12 play for the first time since 2004 and for the fourth time ever. On all three previous occasions, Oklahoma went 8-0 in league play, winning titles in 2000 and 2004.

Oklahoma limited Kansas (1-7, 0-5) to 170 yards, the fewest by an opponent this season. Jordan Evans' 33-yard third-quarter interception return for a touchdown meant the Sooners' defense outscored Kansas.

Kansas has lost 17 straight Big 12 games and 39 straight road games overall.

SOUTH CAROLINA 24, NO. 18 TENNESSEE 21

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Jake Bentley two touchdown passes, Rico Dowdle ran for 127 yards and another score, and South Carolina handed Tennessee its third straight loss.

The Gamecocks (4-4, 2-4 Southeastern Conference) had struggled on offense much of the season and were expected to be a comfortable bounce-back win for the powerhouse Vols (5-3, 2-3) after consecutive losses to No. 9 Texas A&M and No. 1 Alabama.

Instead, South Carolina's defense bottled up the Vols most of the game, holding them to 251 yards of offense. Joshua Dobbs threw for only 120 yards and was picked off twice by cornerback Jamarcus King, the final time with 3:50 left in the game and Tennessee needing a dramatic rally.

Tennessee got a final chance with 35 seconds left and drove to the South Carolina 41. But Aaron Medley's desperation, 58 yard field goal attempt was well short on the final play.

NO. 24 PENN STATE 62, PURDUE 24

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Saquon Barkley ran for 207 yards and two touchdowns, Trace McSorley threw three scoring passes, and Penn State had a 24-point third quarter.

The Nittany Lions (6-2, 4-1 in the Big Ten) converted an interception, a fumbled punt and a failed onside kick into third-quarter touchdowns on their way to a fourth consecutive victory, They snapped a seven-game road losing streak dating to 2014.

Tied at 17 through two quarters, the Nittany Lions outscored Purdue (3-5, 1-4) 24-7 in the third. McSorley threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Chris Godwin and for 21 yards to Miles Sanders for another.

Barkley padded the lead with 13:56 left on a career-best 81-yard run along the right sideline. It was the longest touchdown run by a Nittany Lion since Larry Johnson's 84-yarder in 2002 against Illinois.

2– Chargers (631) +5.5

3– Raiders (627) +1.5

4– Falcons (463) -3

6– Eagles (434) +4.5

Season record: 14-27-1

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…..

13) Wyoming 30, Boise State 28— Wyoming coach Craig Bohl won three consecutive I-AA national titles at North Dakota State; this is his third year in Laramie- he went 4-8/2-10 in his first two years, but behind the terrific soph QB Allen, Cowboys are 6-2 and on a serious roll. This is a great, great win for Wyoming, which trailed 21-7 early.

12) Clemson 37, Florida State 34— This was a great college football game.

Showtime will have tough time whittling highlights of this game into their Tuesday night reality show on the Seminoles. I said this once before this year and I’ll say it again; Dalvin Cook is the best college RB in the country. He is a beast and he plays every game.

Trivia: Rex Ryan’s son is Clemson’s long snapper.

Florida State QB Francois got pummeled in this game; he was like the QB in the movie Friday Night Lights in the climactic state championship game— he got crushed, but that was a movie and this was very real. Young Francois is a freshman and a damn tough kid.

11) Temple 34, Cincinnati 13— Why hasn’t Temple coach Matt Rhule gotten a better job? Guy is 21-13 in his last 34 games at Temple, where winning one game used to be a big deal. Owls outgained Cincy 474-186 in this one- they’ve won five of their last six games.

10) Auburn 40, Ole Miss 29— Brent Musburger is 77 years old; if I’m lucky enough to live that long, I pray to God that I have Brent’s enthusiasm and energy for what he does. He is still the best at his job. This wasn’t an easy game to call, with not many huddles and lot of scoring, but Brent and analyst Jesse Palmer are a great team and a pleasure to listen to.

9) Texas 35, Baylor 34— Bears lost a fumble inside the Texas 10 and kicked FGs of 24 and 27 years, meaning they failed in the red zone and that cost them this game.

8) Notre Dame 30, Miami 27— Hurricanes are now 4-4 after a 4-0 start; they stormed back from down 20-0 to lead 27-20, but couldn’t finish the job. There was a time when this was THE GAME of the regular season in college football; that seems like a long time ago, because it was.

7) Texas Tech 27, TCU 24 OT— Last year, Horned Frogs beat Tech 55-52; two years ago, it was 82-28, so you know Kliff Kingsbury has to be a happy man today.

6) South Carolina 24, Tennessee 21— I was at this game in 2008; what a great day. Sat all day in a folding chair in a field next to a Winnebago, watching a flatscreen TV that was in the luggage compartment of the Winnebago and attached to a satellite dish. Ate Church’s fried chicken, the best fried chicken ever and talked football for 6 or 7 hours before going across the street to the stadium. It was 75-80 degrees in late October; good stuff.

5) Houston 31, Central Florida 24— UCF led this game 21-3 at the half; Knights were winless last year, but are 4-4 and will be very good soon if they can keep coach Frost in Orlando. As for Houston, they’ve lost their confidence/swagger with two losses- maybe this will help them get it back.

4) Thursday night was Upset Night in the MAC this week; 16.5-point dog Ohio U won 31-26 at Toledo, 18-point underdog Buffalo won at home over the Akron Zips.

3) Michigan 32, Michigan State 23— Spartans had bedeviled Michigan for most of the last decade and gave them fits here, but Wolverines held on and State is 0-5 in the Big 14 for the first time since 1982.

2) Washington 31, Utah 24— Huskies are 8-0 but because they play in the northwest, no one in the media cares too much. Washington coach Chris Petersen was the Boise State coach who won that bowl game against Oklahoma with a trick play- he is building a powerhouse in the Pac-12. Their Apple Cup game with Washington State will be a huge game nationally.

1— Kent State 27, Central Michigan 24— Golden Flashes kicked a FG at the gun to win it; their kicker wears #57 but doesn’t look like a LB or a center. Didn’t have lot of faith in him to make the kick but he did, so tonight, he is big man on campus, which must be a happy campus with the nearby Indians leading the World Series 3-1.

BIG 12 TROUBLE

The Big 12's playoff hopes took a big hit with No. 8 Baylor and No. 10 West Virginia both losing.

The Bears suffered their first loss when Texas' Trent Domingue kicked a 39-yard field goal with 46 seconds remaining to give the Longhorns a 35-34 victory.

West Virginia also lost for the first time, 37-20 to Oklahoma State after Mason Rudolph threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score.

Baylor and West Virginia still could by in the thick of the playoff race if they finish 11-1, but would have to run the table.

PEPPERS LEADS WOLVERINES

All Michigan needed was an exclamation point - a final flourish that would add a little extra satisfaction to this big victory on a rival's home field.

When Michigan State fumbled while attempting a puzzling 2-point conversion with 1 second left, Jabrill Peppers scooped up the loose ball and ran all the way to the end zone. Then the celebration really began.

The defensive conversion by Peppers capped a 32-23 victory for the second-ranked Wolverines, who beat the skidding Spartans for only the second time in the last nine meetings. Peppers also scored a touchdown in the first quarter, and when the game's last second finally ticked off, he did a triumphant backflip for good measure.

The Wolverines scored every time they had the ball in the first half, sending the Spartans to their sixth straight loss while avenging last season's botched-punt loss to their rivals.

---

NUMBERS

6-Straight games Florida's Jordan Scarlett has scored a touchdown.

100-Career victories by Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy after the Cowboys knocked off No. 10 West Virginia 37-20.

355-Career catches by East Carolina's Isaiah Jones, passing Oklahoma's Ryan Broyles for second in NCAA history. He trails only the 387 catches by his former teammate Justin Hardy.

4,132-Career yards rushing by Southern's Lenard Tillery, breaking Destry Wright's SWAC record of 4,050 yards with Jackson State from 1997-1999.

---

TOUCHDOWNS, FIVE WAYS

Florida receiver Antonio Callaway became the first player in school history to account for touchdowns five different ways. Not in the same game, though.

Callaway's 4-yard TD run in the third quarter against Georgia - the first rushing score of his career - put him in unique company. The sophomore has scored rushing, receiving, twice while returning punts and while returning an onside kick against Missouri two weeks ago. He also threw a touchdown pass against Michigan in the Citrus Bowl.

He's the 21st player in the Football Bowl Subdivision since 1996 to accomplish the five-way feat. The list includes current NFL receivers Antonio Brown and T.Y. Hilton as well as Reggie Bush, Kevin Faulk, Ten Ginn Jr., Deuce McAllister and C.J. Spiller.

Top 25 Notes

-- West Virginia suffered its first setback of the season in a road game at Oklahoma State, 37-20. The Mountaineers are 4-0 SU at home and 2-1 ATS in three games against FBS teams in Morgantown, but they're just 2-1 SU/1-2 ATS in three games on the road. The 'under' has connected in four straight games for the Mountaineers. ... Louisville likely didn't think they would have nearly as much of a fight as they had in Virginia, but the Cavaliers gave them all they could handle. The Cavs were 32-point favorites on their home turf, but they led 25-24 with 1:57 left in regulation. However, Heisman candidate Lamar Jackson tossed a 29-yard touchdown to Jaylen Smith with :13 left to spoil UVA's upset bid. ... Ohio State bounced back, sort of, against Northwestern. After last week's disappointment in Happy Valley, the Buckeyes sleepwalked through 24-20 win in Columbus. After opening 4-0 SU/ATS, the Buckeyes are 3-1 SU/0-4 ATS over their past four games.

-- Florida picked up a 24-10 win over Georgia in the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. The Gators improved to 6-1 SU, and they have covered in back-to-back games for the first time this season. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have lost four of the past five games and they're just 2-5 ATS over their past seven outings.

-- Baylor suffered its first loss of the season, as Texas outscored them 9-3 in the fourth quarter for a 35-34 victory. The Bears had a 31-26 lead and the ball inside the 5, but settled for a field goal. The Longhorns scored a TD, but missed the two-point conversion, down 34-32. Eventually, the Longhorns got the ball back and were able to make the Bears pay for their late inability to punch it into the end zone and put the game away.

-- Boise State joined the list of teams taking their first loss, as Wyoming stunned them 30-28 in Laramie. The Cowboys had a strip sack with less than two minutes to go in regulation with the game tied at 28. The ball squirted through the back of the end zone for the safety. It was a tough pill to swallow for 'over' (62.5) bettors, who were banking on gift points in overtime.

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- Boston College snapped a 12-game conference losing streak dating back to Nov. 29, 2014, topping North Carolina State 21-14. The Wolfpack are on a three-game skid since winning in Hurricane Matthew against Notre Dame, and the Wolfpack have failed to cover in back-to-back games for the first time this season after opening 5-1 ATS in their first six outings. ... Miami-Florida's skid continued in South Bend in a wild game, as Notre Dame won and covered for just the second time in six games, and it was their first win in South Bend since Sept. 10. After opening 4-0 SU/ATS, the Hurricanes are 0-4 SU/ATS in their past four outings. ... Duke fell 38-35 at Georgia Tech, but the Blue Devils have covered in a season-high three straight games. The Yellow Jackets are 2-2 SU in their past four at home, but just 1-3 ATS during the span.

-- Michigan State was unable to avoid a sixth consecutive loss, falling 32-23 against rival Michigan. However, Sparty was able to slap the brakes on a five-game non-cover streak. ... Minnesota routed Illinois by a 40-17 score in Champaign, quietly improved to 6-2 SU while covering for the second time in three games. The Golden Gophers improved to 2-0-1 ATS in three road outings. ... Indiana posted a 42-36 win over Maryland to end a three-game skid. The win moved the Hoosiers just two games away from bowl eligibility, and the 'over' result ended a four-game 'under' run for Indiana. It was just the second 'over' result in egiht games for IU. ... Penn State built on their signature win against Ohio State last week with a 62-24 throttling of Purdue at Ross-Ade. The Nittany Lions improved to 6-2 with their fourth straight victory, and they're 3-0-1 ATS during the stretch.

-- Texas Tech outlasted Texas Christian 27-24 in overtime as the Red Raiders won outright as a 9 1/2-point underdog. The Red Raiders snapped a three-game losing streak, and improved to 5-1 ATS over the past six outings. ... Iowa State hasn't had a lot of success posting wins, but the Cyclones aren't that far away. They dropped a fourth straight outing against Kansas State, 31-26, but three of their past four losses is by seven or fewer points. The Cyclones improved to 5-1 ATS over their past six games heading into next week's home game against Oklahoma.

-- Washington kept their playoff and national championship aspirations alive with a 31-24 road win at Utah. While the Huskies are 3-0 SU on the road this season, they slipped to 1-2 ATS away from home, and they're just 2-4 ATS over the past six outings. The 'over' is 5-0 in the past five games for Washington, and 7-1 overall this season. ... Washington State kept pace with the Huskies in the North Division with a win at Oregon State, but the Cougars failed to cover for the third consecutive game. The Beavers have dropped three straight, and five of the past six games. But the Beavers have covered four straight overall. ... Oregon picked up a much-needed win with a 54-35 thumping of Arizona State. The Ducks entered the game 0-6-1 ATS. The 'over' has hit in five straight for UO.

-- It's a new day of Kentucky Football, as they hit the road and picked up an SEC win at Missouri. After ppening the season with back-to-back losses, the Wildcats are 5-1 SU over the past six games, and they have covered five in a row, all inside the SEC. The Wildcats are one game away from bowl eligibility. ... Auburn continues to surprise, outscoring Mississippi 13-0 in the fourth quarter for a 40-29 road win. The Tigers have won and covered five straight games since their last setback Sept. 17 against Texans A&M.

Mid-Major Report

-- Tulsa routed Memphis 59-30 in the Liberty Bowl, covering for the third consecutive game. After the 'under' started out 0-2 for the Golden Hurricane the 'over' has cashed in six straight outings. ... Houston picked up a 31-24 win against UCF, but they failed to cover for a fourth consecutive outings.

-- Louisiana Tech thumped Rice by a 61-16 count, nearly taking care of the 'over' (61) all by themselves. The Bulldogs have won five in a row after a 1-3 SU start, and La. Tech has covered each of their past four straight while the 'over' is 4-0 during the span. The 'over' is 7-1 in La. Tech's past eight outings, too. ... Western Kentucky pounded overmatched Florida Atlantic by a 52-3 count, ruining homecoming in Boca Raton. The Owls have dropped seven straight since their opening game win, and they are 1-7 ATS this season. ... It will be a battle of Owls next week, as FAU travels to Rice next Saturday. Rice is 2-1-1 ATS in four home games this season.

-- It was a week of the underdog in the Mid-American Conference. Buffalo (+19.5), Kent State (+12.5), Miami-Ohio (+7) and Ohio University (+15) each won outright as underdogs. In the Ohio game, the 'under' improved to 8-0 over the past eight heading into next week's game against Buffalo. ... No. 21 Western Michigan was off, but they'll play Tuesday at Ball State looking win their ninth straight game. The Broncos enter 6-2 ATS on the season.

-- New Mexico hit the islands and took care of pesky Hawaii by a 28-21 score. The Lobos have rattled off three straight wins and covers heading into next weekend's game against Nevada, and they're just one game away from bowl eligibility. ... San Diego State overpowered Utah State by a 40-13 count in Logan Friday night, improving to 7-1 SU. It was just the first time the Aztecs have covered in back-to-back games this season. ... San Jose State kept their slim bowl hopes alive with a 30-24 win over UNLV, posting a fourth straight 'under' result in the process.

-- Arkansas State entered as a 21-point favorite against Louisiana-Monroe and they showed why. The Red Wolves powered past the WarHawks by a 51-10 count, winning and covering for the third straight game after opening 0-4 SU/ATS. ... Appalachian State posted a 34-10 win at Georgia Southern Thursday night, picking up their fifth consecutive game. The Mountaineers have alternated covers in each of the past seven games.

Bad Beats

-- The Boise State-Wyoming total was a disappointment for 'over' (62.5) bettors. Tied at 28 with less than two minutes to go, overtime looked good and so did a winning ticket. But 'under' bettors were the ones getting the gift in Laramie, as the Cowboys posted a strip sack and safety to cement the under result.

-- Virginia Tech posted the 39-36 win over Pittsburgh, but Hokies side bettors were anything but enthusiastic about the win. The Gobblers were laying 3 1/2 on the road at most shops, but ended up allowing a touchdown with 2:31 left in regulation to give the Panthers the cover.

-- 'Over' (64.5) bettors were feeling pretty good with the score at 56-3 after three quarters in Kansas-Oklahoma. Unfortunately a scoreless fourth quarter handed 'under' bettors the winning ticket.

-- Iowa State outscored K-State 16-0 in the fourth quarter for the backdoor cover, including a touchdown with :51 remaining in regulation to deal Wildcats side bettors a tough losing ticket.

Opening Line Report - Week 10
October 31, 2016

With the College Football Playoff committee set to release its first rankings of the 2016 season on Tuesday, it’s the perfect time to look ahead to prospective betting lines for some of the potential matchups.

So before we get to the Week 10 slate, here are hypothetical point spreads for 10 games we may see in January, courtesy Nick Bogdanovich, director of trading at William Hill U.S.

Alabama (-6) vs. Michigan

Alabama (-8) vs. Clemson

Alabama (-10) vs. Washington

Michigan (-7) vs. Washington

Michigan (-2.5) vs. Clemson

Clemson (-1.5) vs. Washington

Alabama (-11) vs. Louisville

Alabama (-7) vs. Ohio State

Ohio State (-2) vs. Clemson

Now here’s an early look at three key games coming up this Saturday:

Alabama (-7.5) at LSU

On Sunday, CG Technology opened Alabama -7 and the Wynn opened -8, before the two books met in the middle at -7.5. Not much can be gleaned from this line movement, other than a peek into how wiseguys approach certain games.

"They laid 7 with us, so I think they were just playing the number there, so we moved it to 7.5 so they would stop doing that," said Jason Simbal, vice president of risk at CG Technology. "It wasn’t an opinionated bet."

Alabama hasn’t been this short a favorite all season, an enticing proposition for gamblers, and the Crimson Tide get the opportunity to cover this relatively light spread against a team they’ve beaten in five straight meetings (3-1-1 ATS).

But going into Death Valley, especially at night, is never easy. Plus, LSU is surging since Les Miles was showed the door, putting up 42, 45 and 38 points in wins over Missouri, Southern Mississippi and Ole Miss under interim head coach Ed Orgeron.

"LSU has changed their offense some, they’re spreading it out a lot more and throwing the ball more since Miles has left, but I still don’t think their offense is conducive to playing against Alabama," said Ed Salmons, oddsmaker at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. "It’s never really been a good matchup for LSU. But playing at home, as long as they can keep it close, the crowd will be huge for them."

Salmons said of LSU’s potential to pull off the upset, "You have a freshman quarterback for Alabama (Jalen Hurts) going on the road, and a lot of things would have to happen and break right in the direction of LSU. They (can’t) turn the ball over – Alabama seems to get a defensive touchdown every game you watch – so they can’t do any of that stuff."

Considering how dominant Alabama has been this season, it’ll take some serious gumption to bet against them Saturday.

"To me, you have to either lay it with Alabama or not play (the game) after what you’ve seen this season," Simbal said.

Nebraska at Ohio State (-17)

While Simbal said his shop booked two bets on the 'dog Sunday, one at +16 and one at +15.5, before moving the line to 15, the number drifted back to 17 throughout Las Vegas on Monday.

Ohio State has looked vulnerable over the last three week, in fact losing at Penn State two games ago. The Buckeyes were also taken to overtime three weeks ago at Wisconsin and were given all they could handle at home versus Northwestern this past week.

Asked if he has lowered his rating on Ohio State in wake of this relative mediocrity, Salmons said, "Not really, not really. Northwestern played a good offensive game (Saturday). I was surprised at how Ohio State struggled to get them off the field. But I don’t think much of that Nebraska team."

While offshore books were dealing Ohio State as low as -12.5 on Sunday, Salmons’ expectations were 17, exactly where it currently sits.

Washington (-16) at California

The line for this Pac-12 matchup at both CG and the Wynn moved in the underdog’s direction from opening numbers of 17 and 16.5, respectively.

"There’s been three teams this year where the lines have just skyrocketed from the openers – Washington, Louisville and Michigan – because these teams are so popular and they’ve been killing teams," said Simbal. "But all three failed to cover last week, so it will be interesting to see if that trend continues or if people start backing off a little bit."

While Washington continues to hum along at 8-0, the Huskies are in the classic sandwich spot this week. They held on for a 31-24 win at Utah last Saturday and have USC at home in two weeks.

While both Simbal and Salmons envision Cal being able to move the ball on Washington, the Bears’ banged up defense is cause for concern.

"Cal scores and Washington’s on the road, but Cal has no chance to stop them, so it’s a question of how much they’ll score against them," Salmons said. "Cal works against themselves with the style they play because they try to score as fast they can and they get the defense back out there, and the defense can’t stop anyone..."I can almost feel how this game’s going to end," Salmons added. "Washington will be up by 20 and Cal will have the ball with a minute and half to two minutes to go, and if they score they cover and if they don’t they don’t cover."

Tuesday’s six-pack

Six of the more interesting football games this weekend:

— Colorado (-12) over UCLA Thursday. Buffs have come a long way to be a double digit favorite in a league game.

— Eagles scored five TDs during recent 1-3 stretch; interesting game with the Giants, who are coming off a bye.

— Pitt-Miami— Hurricanes are on a 4-game losing streak.

— Steelers-Ravens— Will Big Ben play for Pittsburgh?

— Alabama-LSU— Tide won last four series games by average score of 29-16.

—First place in AFC West is at stake in Denver-Oakland game Sunday night in the Coliseum.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Cam Newton was whining about late hits again Sunday, after Carolina beat the Cardinals. Guess he did it then so people could not call him a sore loser, since they had won.

Best part of this is that Carolina goes to LA next week to play the Rams, usually thought of as a dirty team. Refs might start throwing flags during warmups, just to get loosened up. Great.

12) Coco Crisp was going to get $13M from the A’s in 2017 if he played in 140 games this year, something like that. Since his skills are in decline, they were making sure he wasn’t going to reach 140 games, and he voiced his displeasure with that.

Note: It would’ve been incredibly stupid to pay him $13M next year. Fair or unfair, it was good business.

So to quiet the storm and I guess reward a player who had helped the A’s over the last few years, Oakland dealt him to the Indians on August 31 for an obscure lefty reliever named Colt Hynes. Weird circumstances can help a team win a championship.

11) Phoenix Suns have a young player named Alan Williams who was a good very player at Cal-Santa Barbara. If any of the Suns have trouble with the law, they can call Alan up— his mom just got named police chief for the city of Phoenix.

10) Jacksonville Jaguars just fired their OC in large part because the QB had regressed. Who did they replace the OC with? the QB coach, who is in charge of making sure the QB didn’t regress. Oy.

9) Now that the Cleveland Cavaliers are champs, ever wonder what their former coach David Blatt is doing? Guy got fired last year; you have to wonder what he is doing now. Is he coaching somewhere? Did he go back overseas?

Would be interesting if Blatt went on TV, to hear what he had to say. Former coaches are usually better than former players on TV.

8) Who was the first DH in MLB history? Ron Blomberg walked with the bases loaded against Luis Tiant in Fenway Park, in April of 1973, in the first big league AB by a designated hitter.

7) Russell Westbrook is the first NBA player since at least 1983 with 40+ field goal attempts, 20+ free throws and 10+ assists in the same game. He is also the first guy since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1975 to get a triple double with 50+ points.

6) Former Bills’ coach Mark Levy is 91; he looks great. Coach Levy was at Wrigley Field Friday night and was also there for the 1945 World Series, the last time the Cubs played in the Series, before this year.

5) Texas Longhorns haven’t had an offensive player taken in the first round of the NFL Draft since QB Vince Young, in 2006.

4) CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders closed out Taylor Field this week; lot of history there. Toronto Blue Jays actually played exhibition games in Regina in 1989 and 1993.

3) If you’ve never experienced Halloween in Las Vegas, I highly recommend it; few years ago, think it was 2012, i spent a weekend at the South Point Casino, which is a really good place, has a bowling alley, movie theater and 24-hour coffee shop as well as an excellent sports book. South Point also has an equestrian arena, so when the pro rodeo is in town, the cowboys stay there.

I had no idea there was such a thing as pro rodeo, so the first night I am there, I walk down into the casino and 95% of the people there are dressed like the cast of Blazing Saddles.

I ask the security guard if it is cowboy Halloween party and he says “No, the pro rodeo is in town.” I tell him I never heard of the pro rodeo. He looks at me and says “Where are you from?”

OK, so we don’t have rodeo in New York…….

2) So couple nights later, the rodeo is out of town and it is Saturday night and I notice a red carpet with TV cameras near the entrance. Ask the same security guard whats up.

“Oh, the fetish and fantasy ball is tonight.” he says. I give him a knowing look, not wanting to be a fool again, since I know we have fetish and fantasy here in New York but I had no idea what I was about to see.

An astounding parade of people in all kinds of costumes that were, um……revealing to say the least. I’m leaning up against a slot machine watching this in total amazement.

1) So I watch the parade for a little while then go watch the late college football games; after that I’m going up to my room for something and I get on the elevator with this couple from the fetish and fantasy ball.

He is dressed as a prison guard, handcuffs, night stick and all; she is in shackles and a neck collar, with an outfit that is torn in very strategic places. She had to be a model or a porn star, totally gorgeous and it is just the three of us on the elevator. I have zero idea what to do or say.

So I say nothing until we get to my floor and I wish them a Happy Halloween as I get off the elevator. I’m guessing they did.
