What is unit betting?

Nate A:

First off welcome to the RX. As to your question, when handicapper's refer to a unit like 1*, 2*, 3* etc., they are rating the strength of their play. Some will always wager the same on each game like 1*, while others will vary the size of their wager. One unit, in general, is normally referred to as 1% of a handicapper's overall bankroll. If they have a $1000 bankroll, 1 unit would be $10 per wager. If they have a $10,000 bankroll, 1 unit would be $100 per wager. Many handicappers manage their bankroll in this manner. As the bankroll grows, the value of the unit grows with it. If the bankroll shrinks, the value of the unit shrinks as well. The value of the unit all depends on each handicapper. In the Tracker Forum, we have set up a unit value of $100 per unit and we allow posting of plays from 1 to 5 units often referred to as 1* to 5*. One caution. Be careful of any handicappers that post 50* plays. Take your time and watch some of the handicappers. You will be able to separate the contenders from the pretenders. Best of luck.

Thank you for that.

Now I follow you and am trying to figure out what this means.

Year To Date Record: 6-4 (+2.87)

2* (2-1)(+1.90)
1* (4-3)(+0.97)

I get the record and plus 2.87 is the money your up, guessing $287?

But what do the numbers under that mean?

But what do the numbers under that mean?

OK good! Let's start with my record going into today's plays. It was as follows:

Year To Date Record: 6-2 (+6.03)

2* (2-0)(+4.00)
1* (4-2)(+2.03)

Then I had the following two plays for today which both lost:

2* New York Giants -13 (-105) Skybook
1* Detroit/San Francisco Over 46.5 (-106) Matchbook

On the 2* or 2 unit play, the price I paid was -105, so I lost -2.10
On the 1* or 1 unit play, the price I paid was -106, so I lost -1.06

So the total loss on the day was -3.16. When subtracted from 6.03, my winnings for the season, year to date, is +2.87 and the profit on the 2* plays were reduced to +1.90 and the profit on the 1* plays was reduced to +0.97. The price paid is always accounted for as the juice varies, meaning -105, -106, -107, etc. Sometimes the juice is +105, +106, etc. <!-- / message -->

Gumbi:

The term "SU" usually means "straight up", meaning one team beats another with no spread involved. It has nothing to do with the total (i.e. Over/Under).

2 Team FB 6, 6½, 7 - BK 5, 5½, 6
2 Teams NFL 7, 7½ Point Teaser
2 Teams NFL 8, 8½ ,9Point Teaser
3 Team FB 10 pt Special Teaser
3 Team FB 6, 6½, 7 - BK 5, 5½, 6

GoingBroke:

First, I'd like to welcome you to the RX. Now, as to your question, the minimum amount you can wager on a teaser is determined by each book. So, it really depends are where you are playing.

Teasers are bets where you either subtract or add points to the side or total you like. For instance, a 2 team 7 point NFL teaser, you would select two teams and decide whether to add or subtract 7 points to the teams you like. The example you show above is a menu of the types of teasers the book you copied and pasted from offer. Each book has many different types of teasers and in their payout section indicate what you must lay to win the teaser. Here is an example:

Payouts for Basketball Teasers:

Number of plays 4-pt teaser 4.5-pt teaser 5-pt teaser
2 Plays $100 / $100 $100 / $110 $100 / $120
3 Plays $170 / $100 $160 / $100 $140 / $100
4 Plays $280 / $100 $250 / $100 $200 / $100
5 Plays $450 / $100 $400 / $100 $350 / $100
6 Plays $700 / $100 $600 / $100 $500 / $100

Example: If you wager $10 on a 5-play 4.5-point basketball teaser and win, you will be credited $50 ($40 + your $10 wager).

Note: There is an additional $0.10 charge for each totals proposition included in a teaser.

Payouts for Pro Football Teasers:

Number of plays 6-pt teaser 6.5-pt teaser 7-pt teaser 7.5-pt teaser 8-pt teaser
2 Plays $100 / $110 $100 / $120 $100 / $130 $100 / $140 $100 / $160
3 Plays $170 / $100 $160 / $100 $140 / $100 $120 / $100 $110 / $100
4 Plays $280 / $100 $250 / $100 $200 / $100 $170 / $100 $150 / $100
5 Plays $450 / $100 $400 / $100 $350 / $100 $280 / $100 $200 / $100
6 Plays $700 / $100 $600 / $100 $500 / $100 $400 / $100 $300 / $100

Payouts for College Football Teasers:

Number of plays 6-pt teaser 6.5-pt teaser 7-pt teaser 7.5-pt teaser 8-pt teaser
2 Plays $100 / $100 $100 / $110 $100 / $120 $100 / $135 $100 / $150
3-6 Plays Same as Pro Football Teaser Payouts (6 – 8-pts)

Example: If you wager $10 on a 6-play 7-point football teaser and win, you will be credited $60 ($50 + your $10 wager).

Note: There is an additional $0.10 charge for each totals proposition included in a teaser.

3 unanswered scores prop....question?

OMT, can you tell me why choosing NO for the 3 unanswered scores prop on the MNF game between NO and MINN would have lost? I know that each team scored 3 times consecutively, but each run of 3 scores was "answered" by the other team. Hence, there should not have been 3 unanswered scores in the game. Why isn't the score by the opponent after the 3rd score of the other team considered an answer? Thanks.

The proposition of choosing "no" for a team to score 3 unanswered scores means neither team can score 3 times in a row for the prop to win. The other team must score at least once before one of the teams scores 3 times in a row. It doesn't mean, one team can score 3 times and the other answer after the third score. In the case of this game, as you said, both Minnesota and New Orleans scored 3 times in a row. Below is the box score. I highly recommend you discuss this with whatever book you made this play to make sure you understand their reasoning for grading the wager a loss.

Thanks for the response OMT. I've had a few discussions with the line board managers at the site I go through about this already. I am clear on what the prop means now. The problem was that the first person I talked to was basically a dick to me. I tried to explain to him that the name of the prop isn't technically correct because the 3rd score in a row by each team was theoretically "answered". My argument was that an answer is something that comes after a score and that in the case of this last MNF game there were 2 sets of 2 unanswered scores and then the 3rd score was answered by each opposing team. I told him a better name for the prop would be called 3 consecutive scores or something to that nature, but even that is fuzzy. He didn't seem to agree and was very condescending. I agree I'm at fault for not knowing exactly what I was betting, but they are at fault for not clarifying anywhere on their site what exactly the prop means. Oh, and by the way, the first guy (the dick) disabled my account until I call to talk to him and then decided he needed to be out of the office for 2 days. Vip.com if anyone is interested. Not happy with them right now, especially since I wanted to bet on Troy last night. NOT HAPPY AT ALL. oh well. I'll be contacting them tomorrow to resolve the disabling of my account situation.

Shizzle:

Actually, there is no right answer here as I've seen successful gamblers that play 40-50 games a week, using a standard size and varying their wagers, while I've seen others that wager a few games a week, also using a standard and varying wager. It really depends on your experience and comfort level with risk.

Having said that, my style is wagering a few plays per week and varying the strength of the play from 1* to 5*. You can see my current record on pre-game plays in our Tracker Forum and the link below:

Sorry I didn't see this yesterday as the site was not functioning properly. As to your question, below is a link to a site that provides archives of previous years college football as well as other sports. Click on the link provided, then click on "Past Scores And Ratings" and select the sport and any years you are interested in.
