ted do you think any bookies post at RX and tell people here what they "need"?

I know some have claimed they were books and they were posting "needs", but do you REALLY think that happens?

Yes on two fronts. We have a number of posters who are locals or work for Offshore Sportsbooks and at times mention which side or total is getting heavy action. As for our Offshore sponsors, they don't post needs but will post information on particular big events from time to time.

well there has been a poster as I am certain you know who just signed up in Dec of 2010 who post his/her "needs", and damn.

pretty much right on the spot, atleast 60% of the time. It seems much higher like 70% or so, but I have never kept track, nor do they post a running tally.

I just always wonder if they really are a book, or just someone saying they are who if the continue to be hothothot will try and go paid tout.

just seems odd the forum has been here for a decade and in Dec of 2010 a BOOK shows up and posts plays.

Generally, the posters who I know are locals or work for the Offshore Sportsbooks don't post threads like that in the Sports Forums. They hang out in the Offshore Forum. Those that call themselves books in the Sports Forum are far less likely to be actually bookmaking. Actual bookmakers don't usually start threads, so I would give very little value to one claiming to be one in the Sports Forums. More likely the poster has an agenda anywhere from the need for attention to trying to convince posters of his/her information with the intention to sell it some time in the future.

Hey OMT,

Sorry to bother you again, but I was wondering, is there a site out there that will allow you to find out the previous day's lines/odds? like an archive of some sort. I'm trying to find out the lines/odds of previous days this season for the NBA. Thanks in advance, cheers!

You can click on "Scores" on the toolbar above and select NBA and going to previous day's odds or try.

OMT,

Just curious I am long time gambler, but am now dealing with a local book, is it reasonable to expect them to only pay out at a certain net / me pay in a certain deficit?

BTW been checking out the forum for a while, and there the rx is second to no one!, keep up the great stuff!

Glad to finally be registered.

First of all welcome to the RX and thank you for registering. Appreciate the positive comments regarding our site. We try very hard to make our site both informative, poster friendly and keep it clean from drama.

As to your question, the answer is yes! A local normally wants numbers checked on Monday for the previous week's action and usually has an amount that must be reached before he/she will pay and the same amount for when he/she would want you to pay. Let's say you had a $10,000 weekly credit limit, the local might want to settle either way when $5000 is reached.

Hi Ted; I appreciate your site. I have been using one of your sponsored off shore clients and its been good. I've really kicked butt in College football but I'm avg. at best to terrible in the pro's. I want to raise the stakes a little and be more involved in betting. Are there reputable pay sites that have good track records on what teams to bet on? My friend joined Adam Meyers site but had a terrible experience and a big losing streak on it so he quit it.

Is it best to just bet gradually, look at other points of view and just grind it out, or to actually join a site of supposed experts. thanks!

First of all, please accept my apologies for the delay in responding. Mondays and Tuesdays are my days off. Welcome to the the RX. Nice to see a another new member from Northern California's Wine Country. Glad to hear you have been enjoying our site and are using one of our sponsored offsore books and have had positive results. Also, glad to hear you did well in College Football this past year. As for the NFL, you're far from the first bettor that has struggled with the NFL. Not an easy sport to beat.

Now as to your question regarding Sports Services. By and large, the Sports Services industry is loaded with far more bad handicappers then good ones. Many just want your money and can't handicap a sport better then throwing a dart. However, there are legitimate services such as the Gold Sheet (www.goldsheet.com) that have been in business for 50 years now. That being said, however, over the long haul, no service will have continuous winning records year after year. They will go on streaks just like anyone else. The information provided at a site like the Gold Sheet is valuable but better used to improve your own handicapping skills. You need not pay for a service as you can receive many of the top services selections daily right here in our RX Service Plays Forum via the link below. It is especially busy during football season.

http://www.therxforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=216

As to your final question, Sports Services are not made up of experts by any means. These are not professional gamblers. As I said, they make their money from getting clients. To be successful in this industry, you have to look long term. This is a marathon and not a sprint. Bet gradually and grind through each season. Establish a bankroll for the season, and bet a small percentage of the bankroll on each wager. If your bankroll, grows 20%, increase your wagers a little more. This way you can continue to compound your bankroll if you are selecting winners. If your bankroll drops 20%, reduce your wagers a little. This approach protects your bankroll from the ups and downs and keeps you being disciplined and not chasing.

I hope this information will prove valuable to you and thank you once again for registering with the RX and enjoy the site and best of luck to you.

Hi OMT,

I wanted to ask you this question as well. So a co-worker of mine who is interested in sports gambling asked me a very question (something I'm sure most of us don't really think about when looking for value from what the books put out on a daily basis). The question is, "what factors (ie. % probability for the favorite and underdog team to win, the previous meeting from the two teams, and etc) do bookmakers use on determining the appropriate price for an odd set out for the public. And also, if you were a bookmaker, what factors and probability you would use to determine the appropriate price for an odd? Would you might have an article you saved or there is some sort of site that lets you input numbers in to give you a price of an odd? Thanks ahead.

Your question is one requiring not only knowledge of bookmaking but depth of detail used to establish the opening line. Quite frankly, not an easy question to answer. Las Vegas, Reno, Offshore Books all use a professional consulting service to establish the opening line and it is released to one primary book and then the others follow. The factors this firm uses to establish the line is not known to me personally, but I certainly have an idea of some of the factors they must consider. Although, I pride myself on establishing what I feel is a proper opening line for a game, it would take me hours to explain each and every one I consider or dismiss. Fortunately, I am not a bookmaker and only need find the weakness in the line offered and take advantage of a poor line. There may be articles or books on establishing lines. I refer you to the link below to the largest gambling bookstore anywhere which is located in Las Vegas. I have been there many, many times and you can call toll free, ask for the owner Howard Schwartz or any of their employees and they will help you find literature about how the line is established.

www.gamblersbookclub.com

I apologize for not being able to go into detail but it has taken me 40 years to work through this business and be successful and it is basically impossible for me to express the details that have become a part of my thought process on a forum. If we had a great deal of free time to be together, I would be more clearly able to impart what is important and what is not in line making as well as handicapping. I hope you understand and encourage you to contact the store referenced. You won't be sorry.

I noticed the glossary doesn't have a definition for 'fade'

Just wondering what that means

"Fade" means you are wagering against a handicapper's selection. Like tonight in the Boston/Chicago game I played Boston +5. If you were "Fading" me, you would wager on Chicago -5.

Note: It is somewhat derogatory to tell someone that you are fading them and can cause a poster to become angry. It's more accepted when you say you a "Fading" a tout then a poster on a forum. Please keep that in mind.

so fading and leaning are essentially opposites

thanks omt

No, as poster Mlink stated above fading and tailing are opposites. Tailing is when you are playing the same play as a particular handicapper. The term "leaning" is when a poster is indicating the side, total or some other play he/she is considering or may have played.

In my case, I am often asked if I am leaning one way or the other on a side or total and I usually reply that I either have "no lean one way or the other" or I may be slightly "leaning" to a side or total, but it is not strong enough of a lean to wager on for me. I hope that helps clarify your question a bit more.

don't know where else to ask, why when I post something, it says it has to be reviewed and takes awhile before it shows up? I also tried to send a PM, but it said I couldn't? what's up?

Not sure why you were Placed on Post review, but if it was something in the past I couldn't find it at this Time.

So I took you off... Just don't give us a reason to put you back on and everything should be fine.

Thanks (<)<

Two A+ rated books that you can't go wrong with are 5Dimes and Betjamaica. Most of our membership have accounts and both these long time, financially sound, books. Deposits are easy and withdrawls the fastest in the industry.
