What a great thread this turned into. I was thinking about my favorite non-casino restaurant on the strip a while ago. The Flame, just before the DI. going south on the East side of the Strip. I used to eat at the bar, got treated like a king by all the help. Loved the place.

Tiger Paul was also an unofficial cheerleader for the Pitt Panthers. When the Panthers upset Notre Dame under Jackie Sherrill Sports Illustrated gave him credit for getting the crowd into it.
My favorite Tiger cheerleading story.....In basketball season Paul, with the Fitzgerald Field House crowd waiting, would burst into the gym and the place would be bedlam as he made a fool of himself (he didn't know that, he thought he was real good). It got so bad the students would cheer with Paul and not the Pitt cheerleaders. One game the cheerleading coach went after Paul and ripped his shirt. Paul demanded an apology. The dean or SID or some big time official backed the cheerleaders and the basketball coach backed Paul. He said he was valuable to their sucess. The whole city got involved and this is actually what came down. The line was adjusted to reflect wether Paul would cheer or not. Bettors would try to find out if Paul was in or out like he was the center or something. Well Paul is no fool. He says unless he gets the apology AND A NEW SHIRT he will go over to Duquesne. It finally ends up with the cheerleading coach and dean resigining. Paul wins. The whole thing became an absurd comedy. Square business.....ScottyS

This going back to the mid 80's but I was friendly with a tall BT named Don. Always treated me well. Natrually I was "George" so its no big surprise. I remember they brought the different cuts of meat out on a tray for customers to look at, and select the one they wanted.

This thread brings back so many memories. The thing that always amazed me about Little Caesar's was that Gene Mayday would take a $100,000 bet without blinking an eye but he wouldn't replace that junky sliding glass door.

Scotty,
You know I'm rooting for you. Keep us posted when you can. Good luck and thanks for the response.

Soccer,
That's part of what I meant about Mayday. He could of been/done anything he wanted to in this town....And he was/did exactly that.

Horseshoe....Andre's is the best. My all-time favorite spot. The Dover sole is truly awesome.

Back when Benny was still alive I think the best meal in town was at the Steakhouse at the Horseshoe you could cut the prime rib by just looking at it

Since we are shifting to a restaurant discussion (this thread already read good, now it'll taste good!) check out Cafe Mastrioni off strip Rainbow and Flamingo behind B of A. Owner (Pete) is a top flight chef out of Brooklyn.

I really have to agree about this thread. Thanks rio shill, this has brought back a lot of nostalgic memories. I am feeling old, but it is sure nice to remember those times in front of that place on those pay phones shopping a few numbers trying to win a dime or two. My how things have changed.

WEEKEND, while I had the Stardust I had a phone room set up for the players. We had seven pay phones outside and many more throughout the casino but I took over an old broom closet just off the sportsbook. Five free, local calls only phones were installed for the players to call other stores and BM's. That way they never left the joint......ScottyS

Great reading guys, thanks. I wasn't even there (except for trips) but feel like I know a little more about old Vegas from just reading this. Might be the best thread I've read in a long while.

Scotty I will surely buy one of the books when it becomes available. Good luck with it.
