I mentioned to Wil the other night that before I moved from Vegas 2 years ago that I had been in 99% of the bars in Vegas in the ENTIRE city.

As a patron no less.

Fantastic thread!!

This thread was made for rambling.

Fish whats the name of the joint on the corner of Industrial and Spring Mountain? I have to admit in my younger days to having pulled some serious tail out of the joint. A lot of it did'nt look so great in the light of day, unfortunately.

I saw mention in this thread about Gary Austin's sportsbook. Does anyone here have the real story of what happened there? I had a ticket on the 1985 World Series (Kansas City Royals - $30.00 at +170) which never got paid. I still have the ticket! I went there to cash the next time I hit Vegas (a couple of weeks later) and of course they had the sign on the door which said "Closed due to robbery. Will reopen shortly." The ironic thing about it is that I made the bet in the only place in town that I couldn't get paid at and, unbeknownst to me at the time I made the bet, at bad odds (I think +185 was available). I never believed the robbery story and have sworn that I will spit in Gary Austin's face if I ever meet him. If anyone has some "inside scoop" about Austin's I'd love to hear about it.

wilheim, way back (pg 2) you mentioned you lived at the Jockey Club. KC money was behind it when built. You probably already know but inside was the most state of the art, nicest layed out sports book you could imagine. Circular, two tiered. They could never get their gaming license so it never opened. However that's the book in the movie Casino.....ScottyS

Scott yeah I was in the unopened book area a few times, shame they never opened the place.

Kabb, others know more about Austin's than I do, but by now I bet the $30 ticket would get you $100 on E-bay.

A portion of Casino was filmed in the offices of The "O", Oscar Goodman. I was invited up to watch the filming and I brought my grandson, Anthony, who was mabey five at the time. We get up to the second floor offices and Anthony takes over my friend Vinnys desk outside Oscars office. He's having a good time playing when De Niro shows up in that mint green suit. A few moments later Scorsese shows up. A little guy mabey 5'4. Next is Sharon Stone with her entourage. She spots Anthony and heads right for him. She proceeds to start playing with him and making friends. It was genuine, no acting. She held up the whole operation, mabey ten minutes, to make goo goo with MY GRANDSON. Over the next few years I always remind Anthony so he won't forget. He's 13 now and noticing girls and now he mentions her to me!.....ScottyS

Good story Scott, Iv'e heard lots of good stuff about Sharon, some says she likes gals a little to much, but I think it is Hollywood bullschit gossip. She has a reputation as a real pro on the set.

I used to see the real "Ant" in his dumpy restaurant on Flamingo and Maryland. He would always be holding court with 3 or 4 boys from his crew at a table in the back. Joe Pesci was fantastic in that role. As good as DiNiro was and is, I thought he was mis-cast as "Lefty". I never knew Lefty, but saw him plenty around the Dust, and he was so very different physically than DiNiro, I have a hard time with the character. Just me I quess.

Wilheim...you gotta be talkin' about Sonny's at Spring Mtn and Industrial. I used to eat there every so often with Lila and Lee Pete.

Jockey Club brings back memories for me as well, lived there for about a year back in '81.

FISHHEAD: I showed up in Pittsburgh during the "Pops" Stargell and Steeler run in the early 80's. I worked for an outfit that had sweet du-cats and was at all the ball games. I remember like it was yesterday, that Tiger Paul would stand on top of the Bucco dugout and start whipping his arm around in a windmill motion and get the whole joint jumping.

We used to take him with us once in a while, downtown to Butchie's Rib Joint after the games. And we would roll on the ground laughing when Tiger Paul would start whipping his arm around.

I left town in the mid 80's and would think about him from time to time. I'm saddened by what happened to poor Paul. Life sucks sometimes.

Salty I lived on the 7th floor of the back tower from 83 thru 85. I remember Evil Kenevil moved in shortly before I moved. I liked living there. Room service from the bar/restaurant on the second floor. I think my rent was around 550 a month back then. Not bad for living on the most famous street in the country. I used to love my address 38508 Las Vegas Blvd South. (the 38508 is a quess, it was something like that). We missed each other by a few years. Did you know any of the time share salesmen who worked in the front tower 3rd or 4th floor, selling time share to tourists?

wil.

PS. Sonny's is probably the new name of what used to be called Fuddy Duddys. West of Industrial but north of Spring Mountain in that strip mall on the corner.

Wilheim...no, the Sonny's I'm talkaing about has been there for ages. Haven't been in there for an eternity. I think it was half bar, half Chinese restaurant as I recall.

I remember Fuddy Duddy's, and know that I went there, but I can't recall where it was. One of those joints that have faded into the dark recesses, I guess.

As for Jockey Club, this was a GREAT place to live. Rent was cheap, place was brand new and the suites were pretty nice. Being single and in my 20's when I lived there...well, I'd mark down that year or so that I spent there as...well, let's just say I won't share many of those stories with my better half.

I do remember the time share guys, but sure don't remember their names or much about them.

Austin is now a multi-millionaire many times over. I am sure that if you place enough pressure on him you will 1000% get paid.

So if he produced a ticket, you think Austin would still stiff? Probably.
