What was the name of that old racebook next to Gary Austin's.? I think it was Churchill, maybe, no Saratoga? They used to have all races by calls. No live tv feeds. It was an art the way those writers would Half moon circle the winners and hand write the payoffs. No electronic boards back then. I stayed for a week at the place right next to Austins. Cant remember the name.

Another bad beat for the players. Sanita Anita was a respected, famous R & S book when Sammy Cohen owned it. Unfortunatly he passed on and the book fell into less capable hands. They ended up stiffing all their players not long after the Rose Bowl fiasco. What's so disgusting about this episode was they were taking bets up till they closed for the days action knowing full well that they were going to come up lame the next day. They even took action from their help on that very day. Nice people huh?.....ScottyS

Tiger Paul worked for me at the Stardust. Some of my most outlandish, drop dead funniest stories involve him. Another guy that has passed on.....ScottyS

Best thread in ages. Never thought I'd see Anne Meyer's Queen of Hearts mentioned here (or anyplace else, for that matter).

Scott...I will really be looking forward to reading your book. Kepp us updated on the progress, please!

I was an introduced to Mr.Gaughan once in the lobby of Barbary, that man is sheer class, I was just a college p!ssant, and yet he made time to be genuine and spend a few moments conversing, and offering comps..and I wasn't even staying there(was at Bally's).

ScottyS- Do you know whatever happened to "Big Russ"? I know you finally had to run him out of the Stardust because he just became too much of a pain in the ass. I'll never forget the time Russ saw a football game move half a point about ten minutes to post. Russ ran outside as fast as he could (which is Russ's case wasn't very fast) to the row of pay phones and they were all taken up. He grabbed this little old lady on the end phone and moved her out of the way and called in the line change all while she was cursing at him and beating him with her purse.

This is a classic thread. Scott I want that book right now.

1984 I am in college and go to vegas every month during the school year adn start hanging at Lil Caesars and the Marina book. I used to call my friends from the phones outside of LC's to get service picks and I acted just like one of those wise guys as I would go back in and go to the window and say give me 22 dollars on 716, 721 and 724. LMAO

There were two different Royals, side by side. The Royal Casino I worked at & The Royal Inn where Jim V worked owned by Mike Gaughn. My Royal was owned by Joe Slyman and was the epitome of a sharp joint, we never saw a square dollar. The money we handled was legendary and eventually led to the loss of Joes license. I was working in Reno when that happened. Our sportsbook was a burlesque theater at night and in the daytime we rearranged it into a very basic, spartan sportsbook. Joe NEVER turned down a bet, no matter how large, and would look at you with his sad eyes and ask "you want some more". Thats as far as I can go with this since the principals are still around.....ScottyS

soccerbob, Big Russ was a USC grad belive it or not. He went to Pain In The Ass School as far as I'm concerned. He was brutal with the squares & tourists and in a hotel setting that can't be. Say hello to our buddy.....ScottyS

Fish, didn't Paul die in Reno? Were you up there or did he call you? He used to call me but at the end he was almost unemployable. Jackie Gaughn loved him and gave him every break known to man but Paul couldn't help himself and screwed it up. I first saw Tiger Paul in 73' or 74' at Churchill. Nobody knew him, he was still from Pgh. He came in Churchill dressed in his Pirate uniform. Pirate as in eyepatch & sword. He was the official (unpaid) mascot of the Pgh Pirates. Imagine the clientile of Churchill and right in the middle there's a Pirate! He took some getting used to.....ScottyS
