:aktion033 I just finished speaking to one of my friends today, ( if you followed this thread for the last few years, we are the 5 'phantom' guys that pool all of our 'monopoly money' together to play all the wagers ).......and I was able to get the X Factor of the contenders earlier than last year................ so here it goes, .............A big thank you to my friend ........................

The following horses have the X Factor......................

- California Chrome
- Chitu
- General A Rod
- Ride On Curlin
- Uncle Sigh
- We Miss Artie
- Wildcat Red

And now a little history on perhaps , the Greatest of All Time............

Today, the normal weight of a horse’s heart is 8.5 pounds. Even though Secretariat’s heart was not weighed at autopsy, Dr. Thomas Swerczek, head pathologist at the University of Kentucky, estimated it at 22 pounds after finding the second-largest heart in Sham (Secretariat’s Triple Crown rival) and weighing it at 18 pounds.

"I have done thousands of autopsies, and I had noticed differences in heart size in horses before we did Secretariat," Swerczek said. "I had picked up the difference in the male and female hearts and noticed that some were bigger than others.

"But I didn’t pay much attention until Secretariat came along. He was completely out of everybody else’s league. Looking back at what he had done, it was easy to put a connection to it. The heart was what made him able to do what he did. It explained how he was able to do what he did in the Belmont Stakes – a mile and a half race (Secretariat won by 31 lengths in track-record time). You would have to have a large heart to do what he did. It would be impossible for a horse with a small heart to do that."

Recalling the moment Secretariat’s heart was uncovered, Swerczek said, "We just stood there in stunned silence. We couldn’t believe it. The heart was perfect. There were no problems with it. It was just this huge engine."

........wow................enough said.............

Its unreal, aye......its like me putting a Porsche engine in a Honda body & racing someone else's Honda with a Honda engine, lol!

Secretariat was s freak & like the doctor said, no horse could have done what he did unless having a huge heart like he had.

Good to see Cali Chrome having the X heart, I'm loving him even more, now bring on the post positions!

Yep, and I was blessed to be able to see Secretariat in his prime and then to see him running free about a year before he died. He was indeed something special............

Goodfella,

Here are some interesting points................

X-Factor & Handicapping: So how does the X-Factor work to the handicapper's advantage? Nothing is ever mentioned regarding large-hearts and handicapping because it would be impossible to include the info in the past performances. Not every good racehorse carries a large heart. Certain Thoroughbred families carry the large heart gene. Review the pedigrees and racing backgrounds of the contender's families. Also, look for a leaf-like “curly” appearance to the ears. A horse doesn't need to be a statuesque 17 hands high to carry the large heart. Physical size doesn't matter. War Admiral was a small horse, but he carried the double X factor from his sire and dam.

Kentucky Derby Contenders: That brings us to the Kentucky Derby. How many winners have carried the large heart? Reviewing the pedigree charts back to 1970, it seems that the the trend comes and goes. Following are the years that, according to their pedigree charts, horses with the X-Factor won the Kentucky Derby. Note that there is no more than three years between winners who may carry the X-Factor gene.

1973 – 1975 – yes ..........1992 - no
1976 – no .......................1993 – 2000 - yes
1977 – 1981 – yes......... 2001-2003 – no
1982 – 1983 – no ............2004 - yes
1984 – yes ....................2005 – 2007 - no
1985 – 1986 – no............ 2008 – yes
1987 – yes
....................2009 - no
1988 – 1989 – no ............2010 - yes
1990 – 1991 – yes
......... 2011 – 2012 – no
....................................2013 - yes

Keep in mind that heart size alone doesn't guarantee a stakes winner. A horses biomechanics - gait, stride length, conformation, power, health and training all play a part in their ability.

However, if the large-hearted horse has these other factors in their favor, there's a strong chance that they'll be a tough customer in their races.

TCG,

You read my mind brother...This is by far the best Horse CA has bred in a long time. I'll surely throw something on him for the win, just hoping we see him above 3-1...Which is probably doubtful with all the hype surrounding him..

11B,

Definitely something to consider.. Do you know if Orb had the X-Factor? I didn't see 2013 listed...

In a 20 horse field, you will certainly see at least 3-1 IMO........Smarty Jones had won 6 straight races & was undefeated & went off 4-1 & IMO, there was only 1 other good horse in that field, Lion Heart & he came in 2nd.

Pletcher & Baffert compiling about 1/3 of the field will take a lot of money as they do every year.

IF CC is 4-1 at the window, id be happy with that...I came across this solid info on another forum posted by this guy named Mr. Nobody.. So dating back to 1988, 5 of the last 7 times the Santa Anita Derby has been run under 1:48.00 the winner of the Kentucky Derby has come out of that race (Winning Colors, Sunday Silence, Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Ill Have Another). During that same time period only one horse has run slower than 1:48 in the SA Derby and won the KY Derby (longshot Giacomo). California Chrome ran 1:47.52:think2:

Whats the odds of him winning 3 derby's in a row? Not good IMO......

Another guy on TVG has hit the last 2 winners as well & doesn't like Cali Chrome. I havent seen his pick yet for this year but I know he doesn't like the favorite.

The guy on TVG also likes Dance with Fate, lol! I want to see the post positions but as of now, I will not put him in my top 3 on my tickets even tho Nakatani is 0 for 17 in derby's & needs a win badly.

X CHROMOSOME HORSES Stan Caris crunched the numbers on buckpasser large heart gene. The 2014 contenders with this gene are: Cali Chrome, Wicked Strong, Ride on Curlin, Wildcat Red, Tapiture, Uncle Sigh, Vicars in trouble and Vinceremos. He goes further by extending 5 qualifying criteria including running the final fraction in 5 major preps (Fl derby, Ark derby, Wood Memorial, SA derby and BG stakes) in 12.8 seconds final furlong or final 3/8 in 37.8 seconds or less----the horses making the final cut are Cali Chrome, Ride on Curlin, Wicked Strong and Wildcat Red. This study has shown in the years with an x chromosome 12 finishes in the money in 19 derbys since 1978 (buckpasser was born in 1968). This is a very strong angle and these 4 horses will be in all of my exotics. The fact that Mr. Bo-RAIL has the mount on ride on curlin makes him my prime win bet. I'm hoping Ride on Curlin stays around 20-1.
