Game of the Day: Tuesday's NBA Playoff action by covers

Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers (-5.5, 191)
Series is tied at 2-2

Chicago and Cleveland have traded dramatic game-winning shots in the past two games and the Cavaliers have the homecourt advantage when they meet the Bulls in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series. Chicago’s Derrick Rose banked in the decisive shot in Game 3 and Cleveland’s LeBron James answered with the game-winner in Game 4 to tie the series at two games apiece.

James sprained his left ankle in Sunday’s game but won’t miss any time while point guard Kyrie Irving continues to be hampered by injuries – first a sore right foot and then being diagnosed on Monday with tendinitis in his left knee. Irving plans to play despite being an inferior shadow of himself while the Bulls will likely be without power forward Pau Gasol (hamstring) for the second consecutive contest. Chicago missed a big opportunity to take a 3-1 lead when it struggled in the fourth quarter and Cleveland rallied for the victory. “We just got to be a lot smarter with the lead,” Bulls forward Taj Gibson told reporters. “Going into the fourth we had a good margin. We just blew it.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Cavs as 5-point faves but have since moved that number to -5.5.

INJURY REPORT:
Chicago - T. Gibson (questionable), P. Gasol (doubtful). Cleveland - K. Irving (probable), L. James (probable), K. Love (out for playoffs), A. Varejo (out for playoffs).

ABOUT THE BULLS: Chicago led by 11 points late in the third quarter of Game 4 before falling apart on the offensive end and letting the game get away. “Just too many duds for offensive possessions,” forward Mike Dunleavy told reporters. “We’ve had issues with that all year. Especially here in the playoffs, our ball movement has been slowing us down, and we kind of get stagnant.” One guy thriving is Rose, who has scored 30 or more points in back-to-back games and is averaging 25 points in the series.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: Irving is 5-for-23 shooting over the last two games, and his 30-point performance in Game 1 seems like it happened ages ago. “I’d rather give 30 percent, 40 percent rather than give none at all,” Irving told reporters. “I just literally can’t do it. I can’t sit on the bench and be hurt and be OK with that. And still, I still know I can be effective.” James expressed surprise that he was able to finish Game 4 – a contest that concluded with him overruling coach David Blatt’s plan to have him in-bound the ball on the play and instead receiving the ball and knocking down the decisive shot.

TRENDS:

*Bulls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
*Under is 5-2 in Bulls last 7 overall.
*Under is 5-2 in Cavaliers last 7 overall.
*Bulls are 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings.

Los Angeles Clippers at Houston Rockets (+2.5, 219)
Clippers lead series 3-1

The Los Angeles Clippers look to advance to the Western Conference finals for the first time in franchise history when they visit the Houston Rockets in Game 5 of the semifinal series. Los Angeles has pounded Houston by an average of 29 points over the last two games to take a 3-1 lead while thoroughly demoralizing the Rockets.Houston has no answer on the defensive end as the Clippers are averaging 119.5 points in the series after posting a 128-95 victory on Sunday. “This is the ultimate adversity right now,” Rockets guard James Harden told reporters. “We’ve got Game 5 back at the house and it’s really win or go home. Our backs are against the wall and we’ve got to show up.” The Clippers are the first team to win back-to-back games in a playoff series by at least 25 points since the Los Angeles Lakers in 2001 and are rolling on all cylinders. “I think we realize as a team what we’re capable of when we play the right way,” power forward Blake Griffin told reporters. “It’s just a matter of coming out and playing the right way.”

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY:
The Rockets opened -1 but have hopped the fence to +2.5 as of this writing.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS: The hamstring injury to Chris Paul was thought to be a deterrent to Los Angeles winning the series, and it split two games without him before dominating the two he has played. Paul has only had to play an average of 24.5 minutes due to the two routs and now coach Doc Rivers is less than concerned with his point guard’s health and more interested in his team continuing its strong play. “I think right now, honestly, they just have great focus,” Rivers told reporters. “They’re not thinking about a lot of stuff, but doing their jobs and trying to win the game.”

ABOUT THE ROCKETS:
Standout guard James Harden scored a quiet 21 points in Game 4 and has failed to be a difference-maker despite a 24.5 average in the four games. The runner-up in MVP balloting has been bottled up for long stretches by the Clippers and is growing more and more frustrated as the scores get out of hand. “We’re not really moving,” Harden told reporters. “We’re not really moving on the offensive end. We’re pretty much stagnant, so it makes it easier for them to kind of load up and play their normal defense.”

TRENDS:

*
Clippers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
*
Over is 10-2 in Rockets last 12 home games.
*
Over is 5-0 in Clippers last 5 overall.
*
Clippers are 16-4-1 ATS in their last 21 road games.

Game of the day: Wednesday's NBA Playoff action by covers

Washington Wizards at Atlanta Hawks (-8, 199.5)
Series tied 2-2

The Atlanta Hawks might be the top-seeded team in the Eastern Conference but they haven’t been displaying it in the semifinal series against Washington. Atlanta rebounded to even the series and now has an opportunity to take a 3-2 edge when it host the Wizards on Wednesday.

The Hawks regained their form in Game 4 but still had to survive a late miss by Paul Pierce to seal the victory. “Now we got to go back home and take care of business,” point guard Jeff Teague told reporters. “They beat us once on our home floor, so they’re comfortable playing there, but we got to make it a hostile environment.” There is a slim chance Washington point guard John Wall can return from a hand injury that has sidelined him the past three games. The Wizards would like to see him on the court as they are 5-0 when Wall has played in this season’s playoffs and 1-2 – all against the Hawks – when he doesn’t.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY:
Books opened the Hawks -9 but have since adjusted that number to -8.

INJURY REPORT: Wizards - G John Wall (Ques-Wrist) Hawks - F DeMarre Carroll (Prob-Hip)
ABOUT THE WIZARDS: Wall tested his injured left hand by dribbling a basketball for the first time since last Thursday’s diagnosis of five non-displaced fractures in the hand and wrist. He is scheduled to again be examined by doctors and the team listed him as questionable for Game 5 event though it has never revealed a firm timetable for his return. “He’s again moving in the right direction,” Washington coach Randy Wittman told reporters. “Swelling is down again – minimal swelling. He wanted to dribble the ball a little bit and get the feel of it first. This is what of what he did.”

ABOUT THE HAWKS: Teague had his best showing in the series by contributing 26 points and eight assists in Game 4 after shooting just 12-of-41 from the field over the first three games. Power forward Paul Millsap also bounced back with a 19-point effort after having just eight in Game 3 due to illness and shooting 14-of-39 over the first three games. “That’s how we play,” Millsap told reporters about Atlanta’s performance in Game 4. “That’s how we’ve been playing all year. Things we didn’t do pretty much all series, we did (Monday).”

TRENDS:

*Wizards are 2-6-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
*Hawks are 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. win.
*Over is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings.
*Over is 6-1 in Wizards last 7 overall.

COVERS CONSENSUS: Sixty-four percent of Covers Consensus users are siding with the Wizards.

Memphis Grizzlies at Golden State Warriors (-9.5, 195.5)
Series tied 2-2

The Golden State Warriors temporarily solved the tactics of Memphis and are locked in a 2-2 series tie with the visiting Grizzlies entering Wednesday’s Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals. Golden State played at a pace Memphis couldn’t match to post a 101-84 win on Monday as league MVP Stephen Curry erupted for 33 points.

The Warriors were facing the possibility of returning home in a big hole before rising to the challenge in Game 4. “This series could have been close to over if we hadn’t come out like we were supposed to,” Golden State center Andrew Bogut told reporters. “You know it’s never over until the end, but being down 3-1 going home is a pretty tough task so 2-2 right now in a three-game series and we like our chances.” Memphis might have squandered a big opportunity but the squad isn’t lacking in confidence. “We don’t panic, we don’t forget who we are or what we are supposed to do as a team,” center Marc Gasol told reporters. “We’ve been together long enough to know how to work ourselves out of a tough situation and just keep playing no matter what. We know we’re playing a very good team and nothing will be easy.”

TV:
10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY: Most books opened the Dubs as 10-point home faves but have dropped that number to -9.5 as of this writing.

INJURY REPORT: Grizzlies - N/A Warriors - C Ognjen Kuzmic (Ques-Ankle)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES: Memphis held Golden State to an average of 89.5 points in its two victories and gave up 101 in both of the losses but its own lack of offensive production (91.5) is becoming a hindrance. “At some point we’re going to have to score 100 points to win a game against them,” Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger told reporters. “You can’t just keep running your defense at them.” Power forward Zach Randolph had 12 points and 11 rebounds in Game 4 but it was his lowest scoring output of the series after posting three straight games of 20 or more points.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS:
Curry had his best performance of the series in Game 4 with 33 points, eight rebounds and five assists after averaging 21.3 points through the first three games. It marked the ninth time in his career he scored 30 points in a playoff game and his 21 first-half points set the tone for the much-improved effort. “We took a step towards understanding that sense of urgency and kind of competitiveness and physicality to the game,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr told reporters. “It was probably our most competitive effort, definitely of the series, but probably of the playoffs just in terms of understanding you got to play every second.”

TRENDS:

*Grizzlies are 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings in Golden State.
*Warriors are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games following a S.U. win.
*Under is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.
*Under is 6-1 in Grizzlies last 7 games following a ATS loss.

COVERS CONSENSUS:
According to Covers Consensus, 56 percent of users are on the Grizz.

Game of the day: Thursday's NBA Playoff action

Cleveland Cavaliers at Chicago Bulls (-2, 192.5)
Cavaliers lead series 3-2

LeBron James has placed the Cleveland Cavaliers in position to wrap up the series against Chicago when they travel to face the Bulls in Thursday’s Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. James’ epic Game 5 performance included 38 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and no turnovers to give Cleveland a 3-2 lead.

James sprained his left ankle in Game 4 but didn’t seem to be bothered by the ailment while playing 41 minutes on Tuesday. “LeBron was just outstanding in every element of the game,” Cavaliers coach David Blatt told reporters. “You can’t pick a thing that he didn’t do at the highest level.” Chicago will be looking for point guard Derrick Rose to bounce back from a shaky 16-point outing after scoring 30 or more points in back-to-back contests. Rose tweaked his shoulder and all indications are that the ailment is minor and won’t affect his availability.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: The Bulls opened as -1.5 home faves before shifting up to -2. The total of 192.5 has not moved since opening.

INJURY REPORT: Cavaliers - N/A Bulls - F Pau Gasol (Ques-Hamstring)

ABOUT THE BULLS: Power forward Pau Gasol (hamstring) has missed the last two games and the club is confident that he will return for Game 6. Chicago has missed a big piece of its attack with Gasol sidelined as role player Taj Gibson isn’t up to the task of picking up the slack. “I think (Gasol) knows his body,” Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau told reporters. “If he feels good enough to play, we’ll give it a shot. He’s been around long enough to understand. His health is the big thing. If he can go, he’ll go. If he can’t or doesn’t feel comfortable with it, he won’t.”

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: James wasn’t the only Cleveland player standing out in Game 5 as point guard Kyrie Irving re-emerged to score 25 points – more than his combined output of the previous two games (23), when he was 5-of-23 from the field. Irving has been bothered by injuries to his right foot and left knee and made three 3-pointers as part of a 9-of-16 shooting effort over 39 minutes. Shooting guard Iman Shumpert (groin) bounced back for 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting after being 4-of-17 over the previous two contests.

TRENDS:

*Cavaliers are 5-16 ATS in the last 21 meetings.
*Bulls are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 when their opponent scores 100 points or more in their previous game.
*Over is 11-3 in Cavaliers last 14 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
*Under is 16-7 in Bulls last 23 vs. NBA Central.

COVERS CONSENSUS: 62.15 percent of the Covers public is backing the Bulls, with 51.4 percent on the under.

Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Clippers (-8, 219.5)
Clippers lead series 3-2

The Houston Rockets staved off elimination and now look to tie the best-of-7 Western Conference semifinals against Los Angeles when they visit the Clippers in Thursday’s Game 6. After losing back-to-back games by an average of 29 points, Houston rolled to a 124-103 win on Tuesday to cut Los Angeles’ series lead to 3-2.

Star guard James Harden turned in his top performance of the series with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to notch Houston’s first playoff triple-double since Steve Francis recorded one in 2004. The victory helped revive the Rockets and their confidence was flowing after delivering such a stellar showing. “The tremendous motivating factor for us is we don’t want our season to end and we realize that we can focus in on just one game,” veteran guard Jason Terry told reporters. “One game only and get the win. Then we will be back in the friendly confines of the Toyota Center.” The Clippers, who are vying for their first trip to the Western Conference finals, had only three fast-break points in Game 5 after totaling 45 in back-to-back blowout victories.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: The line has moved a half point since opening at LAC -7.5 to -8. The total has climbed from 218.5 to 219.5.

INJURY REPORT: Rockets - G K.J. McDaniels (Out-Wrist) Clippers - N/A

ABOUT THE ROCKETS: Houston didn’t appear to have much fight left after losing Games 3 and 4 by an average of 29 points but Harden, forward Trevor Ariza (22 points, eight rebounds) and center Dwight Howard (20 points, 15 rebounds) proved to be a formidable trio with elimination staring them in the eyes. Harden was bothered by the flu but still drove the lane with ease and distributed the ball generously as the Rockets dictated the flow of the game. “We played our tempo and to our pace,” guard Corey Brewer told reporters. “We didn’t want to go home. We’re trying to play it one game at a time.”

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS: Los Angeles missed an opportunity to close out the series and now feels pressure to wrap it up at home. “You look at, statistically, Game 7s on the road – nobody wants to put themselves in that position,” Griffin told reporters. “If we don’t have a sense of urgency going home after already losing a game, then we’ll be in trouble.” Griffin continued his outstanding series with 30 points and 16 rebounds while point guard Chris Paul (22 points, 10 assists) is showing little signs of hamstring issues.

TRENDS:

*Rockets are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 vs. NBA Pacific.
*Clippers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. loss.
*Over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.
*Over is 5-0 in Clippers last 5 home games.

COVERS CONSENSUS: 56.21 of Covers users are backing Houston with 61.2 percent taking the over.

Game of the day: Friday's NBA Playoff action by covers

Atlanta Hawks at Washington Wizards (-2.5, 197)
Hawks lead series 3-2

John Wall and the Washington Wizards have no margin for error as they look to rebound from a demoralizing loss when they face the visiting Atlanta Hawks in Friday’s Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Washington led by 11 points midway through the fourth quarter on Wednesday before collapsing as Atlanta rallied for an 82-81 victory to take a 3-2 series lead.

The Hawks won the contest on Al Horford’s putback with 1.9 seconds left, and it capped a strong game from the standout center. Horford delivered 23 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots to become the first player in franchise to history to have 20 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in a playoff contest. Wall returned to action after missing three games with a broken left wrist and hand, and his presence energized the attack. “I didn’t have any problems with my hand,” Wall told reporters. “I was able to play aggressive and make plays so I was fine.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY:
The opening spread of Washington -2.5 has not moved. The total opened at 198 and has since dropped to 197.

INJURY REPORT: Hawks - N/A Wizards - G John Wall (Prob-Head)

ABOUT THE HAWKS: Horford has four double-doubles in the series and his stellar effort was capped by the key rebound, for which he slyly worked his way into position and then overpowered Washington’s Nene to get the board and lay it in the basket. It is the type of clutch play the Hawks expect from the three-time All-Star and it leaves Atlanta one win away from claiming the series. “He’s always calm and collect; thoughtful, yet intense,” shooting guard Kyle Korver told reporters. “Obviously on the basketball court, he is a steadying force and he’s a consistent player. This was obviously a big moment for him.”

ABOUT THE WIZARDS: Forward Paul Pierce scored a series-low 11 points, but that didn’t keep him from popping off at the Atlanta bench and reportedly insisting the series was over when he made a 3-pointer to put Washington ahead with 8.3 seconds remaining. Now he’ll be hoping for another trip down south as the Wizards first need to tie the series at home before having a chance to win it. “I think the sting of this game is going to motivate us for Game 6,” Pierce told reporters. “We’re going to go back home with aspirations of winning and making another trip to Atlanta.”

TRENDS:

*Hawks are 4-9-1 ATS in their last 14 games overall.
*Wizards are 12-3-2 ATS in their last 17 games overall.
*Over is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Washington.
*Over is 14-3 in Wizards last 17 home games.

Golden State Warriors at Memphis Grizzlies (+5, 193.5)
Warriors lead series 3-2

The Golden State Warriors have a chance to close out the series when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies in Friday’s Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals. Golden State has won the last two games by an average of 18.5 points against the scoring-challenged Grizzlies.

Memphis scored a series-low 78 points in Wednesday’s loss, marking the third time the Warriors have limited the Grizzlies to 86 or fewer points. “I think I said the first couple games, ‘Our defense was good enough but it wasn’t championship defense,’” Golden State coach Steve Kerr told reporters. “I was wrong. This is what it’s going to take.” Memphis hasn’t once reached 100 points in the series and its vaunted defense took a hit as well with swingman Tony Allen sidelined with a hamstring injury. Warriors point guard Stephen Curry made six 3-pointers and registered a personal playoff-best six steals in Game 5 while veteran guard Andre Iguodala had his best outing of the series with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: The Grizzlies opened as +5 and have remained there. The opening total of 195 has dropped down to 193.5.

INJURY REPORT: Warriors - C Ognjen Kuzmic (Ques-Ankle), F Marreese Speights (Out-Calf) Grizzlies - G Tony Allen (Prob-Hamstring)

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Golden State knocked down 14 3-pointers in Game 5, and shooting guard Klay Thompson made three of them while scoring a series-best 21 points. Thompson is averaging 17.4 points against Memphis and he struggled early in the series when routinely guarded by Allen. The Warriors are trying to get forward Draymond Green loose but he scored just seven points in Game 5, is 13-of-40 shooting over the past four games and is averaging 11.8 points in the series.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES: Memphis has drawn criticism for its impotent offense, with Allen receiving much of the blame, but coach Dave Joerger was quick to point out that Memphis tallied only 78 points without Allen being in the lineup. Allen plans to play in Game 6 as will go as far as the ailing hamstring will allow. “I am doing this for the guys in that locker room,” Allen told reporters. “I’ve been there with them since Day One. I’d rather be in there in that battle. If they say our season is on the line and we need everybody, I’m one of the troops.”

TRENDS:

*Favorite is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
*Warriors are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games following a SU win of more than 10 points.
*Under is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.
*Under is 24-2 in Grizzlies last 26 home games.
