Game of the day: Rockets at Warriors by covers

Houston Rockets at Golden State Warriors (-10.5, 215.5)
Warriors lead series 3-1

The Golden State Warriors take a second swipe at finishing off Houston when they host the suddenly torrid Rockets in Wednesday’s Game 5 of the Western Conference finals. Houston remained alive with a splendid 128-115 victory in Monday’s Game 4 that represents the most points Golden State has allowed all season.

The two teams combined for a postseason record 37 3-pointers – 20 by the Warriors – and Rockets guard James Harden rebounded from a poor Game 3 showing to record a game for the ages with a playoff-best 45 points and nine rebounds to keep Houston alive. “Our season comes down to winning one road game. That’s not going to be anything new,” Rockets coach Kevin McHale said at Tuesday’s press conference. “We’ve been in that situation before. We’ve just got to go in there and execute.” Golden State point guard Stephen Curry dodged a serious injury in Game 4 when his defensive attempt to stop Trevor Ariza saw him catapult over the Rockets forward before landing on the back of the head and being checked for a possible concussion before cleared to return. “That was the worst because you’re in the air for a long time,” Curry said in his postgame press conference. “And not knowing how you’re going to hit the floor, knowing that it’s going to happen, it’s inevitable but you’re up there just trying to brace yourself.”

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: There hasn't been any movement off the Golden State -10.5 number as of this writing.

INJURY REPORT: Rockets - C Dwight Howard (Ques-Poss. Suspension) Warriors - G Steph Curry (Prob-Head), C Ognjen Kuzmic (Ques-Ankle)

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "Houston responded exceptionally well in Game 4 after losing Game 3 by 35 points (115-80). The Rockets’ offense played their best game of the series as they scored 128 points on 56.6% (43-76) shooting from the field and 53.1% (17-32) shooting from three-point land. With the series now going back to Golden State, I do not expect Houston’s offense to repeat that effort, especially since the Warriors have the #1 defense in efficiency metrics."

WHAT BOOKS SAY:
"We opened the Warriors as 10-point favorites on their home court and are seeing solid two way action at the number at the time of writing this. With 59 percent of the action coming in on the Rockets to cover the +10. The money line is where we are seeing an overwhelming amount of early Rockets money with the Rockets getting over 90 percent of that action." Michael Stewart, CarbonSports.ag.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS:
Harden made seven 3-pointers in an effort that tied for third-most in Houston playoff history with legendary Hakeem Olajuwon having performances of 49, 46 and 45 points. He scored 33 points in the second half as the Rockets rediscovered an offense that tallied just 80 points in a demoralizing Game 3 loss. “We got after them and we’ve got to get after them again,” McHale told reporters. “We’ve got to attack them, we’ve got to play our style of basketball. If the ball moves from player to player, the more willingly and the more rapidly and harder and quicker, it’s harder to guard.”

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Golden State coach Steve Kerr defended club trainers and doctors who cleared Curry to return to action and made it clear the league MVP was also insisting that he was fine. “As long as Steph says he’s good to go and the doctors told me he’s cleared, then I’m going to listen to that,” Kerr said in Tuesday’s press conference. “They’re the ones who are paid to do that, not me.” Curry scored 23 points despite playing just 31 minutes while slumping shooting guard Klay Thompson showed life by making six 3-pointers and scoring a personal series-best 24 points.

TRENDS:

*Underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.
*Warriors are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games.
*Over is 4-1 in Rockets last 5 games after scoring more than 125 points in their previous game.
*Under is 9-2 in Warriors last 11 overall.

COVERS CONSENSUS:
Per Covers Consensus, a whopping 71 percent of bets are being placed on the underdog Rockets.

Game of the Day: Cavaliers at Warriors by covers

Cleveland Cavaliers at Golden State Warriors (-8, 200.5)

LeBron James has been carrying Cleveland throughout the playoffs and his load will be even heavier when the Cavaliers visit the Golden State Warriors in Sunday's Game 2 of the NBA Finals. Cleveland point guard Kyrie Irving underwent surgery to repair a fractured kneecap on Saturday and joins forward Kevin Love (shoulder) on the sidelines as the underdog Cavaliers try to even the series with Golden State.

James poured in 44 points in the opener and said his mindset won't be affected by the bad breaks being dealt to his team. "We haven't had much luck and we haven't been healthy, but I haven't gotten discouraged," James said at a press conference. "I understand the moment that I'm in and I'm not too much worried about the game. I'm worried about the moment and I'm happy with the moment." League MVP Stephen Curry led Golden State with 26 points and eight assists in the opener -- a 108-100 overtime victory -- and said the loss of Irving doesn't mean the Warriors have an easier path to claiming the title. "We can't assume ... that it's going to be a cakewalk for us to get a championship," Curry said at a press conference. It's still going to be tough. We have to control what we control and do what we do."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC

LINE HISTORY: The initial spread opened at Golden State -6.5, but books readjusted to -8 with the announcement that Kyrie Irving is out. The total also dropped from 201.5 to 200.5.

INJURY REPORT: Cleveland - K. Irving (out for season), K. Love (out for season) A. Varejao (out for season). Golden State - N/A.

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "Before the series began, the initial look-ahead line was going to be Warriors -5 for Game 2 as the sportsbooks assumed Golden State would win Game 1 and then Cleveland would be a better play to bounce back in Game 2. This has normally been the case in the NBA Finals and the playoffs in general as quality teams off a loss have been solid in Game 2. The line has definitely been inflated for this game, but it is hard to know if Cleveland is still a quality team now that Kyrie Irving is out, along with Kevin Love. The Cavaliers were able to win in the last round versus Atlanta with a short-handed lineup, but the Warriors are a much better team than the Hawks. Golden State started slowly in Game 1, probably because the one week layoff disrupted their offensive flow. Golden State trailed by 13 points in the middle of the first quarter, but then outscored the Cavaliers by 21 points the rest of the game."

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: Cleveland played just eight players in the opener and veterans like Shawn Marion and Mike Miller never left the bench. The duo could be in line to see some minutes, especially if guards J.R. Smith (3-of-13) and Iman Shumpert (2-of-6) again experience cold-shooting performances. Power forward Tristan Thompson had 15 rebounds in the opener but scored just two points and revealed in a press conference that he has to score within the offense because coach David Blatt doesn't call plays for him.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Shooting guard Klay Thompson scored 21 points in the opener and certainly didn't appear hindered by the concussion he suffered in the finale of the Western Conference finals against Houston. "Having a week off really helped," Thompson said at a press conference. "Obviously a little sore. I mean, that's going to happen in your 100th-whatever game." Forward Draymond Green was sluggish offensively -- 12 points on 4-of-13 shooting -- and had just six rebounds after averaging 13.7 boards over the final three games of the series against the Rockets.

TRENDS:

*Under is 7-1-1 in Warriors last 9 home games.
*Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
*Cavaliers are 1-6 ATS in the last 7 meetings in Golden State.
*Warriors are 20-5-1 ATS in their last 26 games playing on 2 days rest.

COVERS CONSENSUS: 61 percent of the Covers public is backing the Cavs +8, with 67 percent on the over.

Game of the day: Cavaliers at Warriors by covers

Cleveland Cavaliers at Golden State Warriors (-8.5,195.5)

Series tied 2-2

The injury-riddled Cleveland Cavaliers may have to dig into their bench for reinforcements when they face the host Golden State Warriors in Sunday's Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The losses of forward Kevin Love (shoulder) and point guard Kyrie Irving (knee) have left Cleveland short-handed but the series is tied at two games apiece after Golden State emerged victorious with a 103-82 rout in Game 4.

Cavaliers coach David Blatt has been reluctant to play more than seven or eight players but star forward LeBron James not-so-subtly hinted that veterans such as Mike Miller (14 minutes in the series) and Shawn Marion (no action) need to see playing time so the starters can get more rest. "That's the coach's decision if he decides he wants to go deeper in the bench," James said at a press conference. "We haven't played many guys throughout this playoff run. I think it would help some of the guys that are playing some high minutes for sure -- just give guys a couple minutes here, a couple minutes there." One of the more valuable players in the series is Golden State guard Andre Iguodala, who started for the first time all season in Game 4 and had 22 points while holding James to a series-low 20. "You understand how hard it really is just to win a game, and you take it one game at a time," Iguodala told reporters. "The flow has changed. You make so many adjustments, your mind's just always locked in on a task and you learn how mentally strong you have to be in order to just win a game and not just a series."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC

LINE HISTORY: Online books opened the lines at GS -8.5, 195.5 after Game 4, which has yet to move.

INJURY REPORT: Cavaliers - F LeBron James (Prob-Head), G Kyrie Irving (Out-Knee) Warriors - N/A

WHAT BOOKS SAY:
"As expected, the bettors love LeBron in this situation. And can you blame them? Just as Game 4 was a must-win scenario for Golden State, the table has turned and now Cleveland is in the same situation. The chess game will go back and forth between the coaching staffs, but this is really going to come down to how much King James has left in the tank." John Lester, BookMaker.eu

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: James is averaging 35.8 points in the series despite a miserable 7-for-22 shooting effort in Game 4 that drops his series percentage to 38.8. Guards Matthew Dellavedova (3-of-14), J.R. Smith (2-of-12) and Iman Shumpert (2-of-9) all had dismal shooting performances in Game 4 with Smith missing all eight 3-point attempts as Cleveland was 4-of-27 from behind the arc. "We don't have many options as far as lineups we can to go, but we can make adjustments," James said. "That's what you do throughout a series."

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Iguodala's surprise start moved center Andrew Bogut to the bench and Bogut played just three minutes while forward David Lee remained part of the rotation after providing a spark in Game 3. But outside of Iguodala's contributions, the best sight for Golden State was seeing point guard Stephen Curry shoot 4-of-7 from 3-point range and the league MVP has scored 39 points over the last five quarters. "Obviously, you never lose your confidence," Curry said at his press conference. "You understand there is a lot of series left, and a lot of opportunity to turn it around."

TRENDS:

*Cavaliers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a double-digit loss at home.
*Warriors are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 home games.
*Under is 6-1 in Cavaliers last 7 vs. a team with a winning S.U. record.
*Under is 13-3 in Warriors last 16 overall.

COVERS CONSENSUS: 61.82 percent of the consensus is on the Cavs +8.5 with 59.4 percent on the over.
