ONE HAPPY POKER PLAYER

Winner Antonio Esfandiari (San Francisco CA) $184,860.

Antonio Esfandiari used to be a professional magician. He peformed magic tricks and wowed audiences of all ages. But his greatest performance might have been on this night, as Esfandiari, a.k.a. “The Magician,” reached deep into his bag of card tricks in the $2,000 buy-in Pot-Limit Hold’em event at this year’s World Series of Poker. He topped a world-class field of 324 players – the highest ever to enter this event in the 35-year history of the tournament. It wasn’t so amazing that Esfandiari won. What was amazing was how he earned his first gold bracelet and WSOP victory. To call it “magical” would be a gross understatement. Many eyes were focused on the two former world champions sitting at the final table – Chris “JESUS” Ferguson, the 2000 winner, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr., the 1989 champ. Lots of excitement was expected, and the players did not disappoint. Early at the final table, Esfandiari won with 2-2 versus 8-8, after a deuce came on the turn.
Esfandiari’s most critical hand came when he took Q-Q against Phil Hellmuth’s K-K and won. Both players got into a raising war before the flop. Esfandiari was “all in” and Hellmuth had just enough chips to cover his opponent’s stack. The flop helped neither player, but three clubs on board made Hellmuth’s kings an even stronger favorite – since he had the lone club in his hand. Then, disaster struck for the former world champion. The queen of clubs fell on the turn, which brought the audience to its feet. Esfandiari had hit his two-outer. But the fourth club had also made a flush for Hellmuth. Esfandiari now had extra outs – and could win the huge pot if the board paired. That’s exactly what happened on the river when a second nine rained down from the poker gods above, giving Esfandiari a full-house against Hellmuth’s club flush. It was a brutal beat.

A short time later, Esfandiari eliminated Hellmuth with K-9 versus A-8.
Esfandiari’s A-6 topped Phi Nguyen’s A-9 on the final hand of the tournament.

I go down to the Mirage on Tuesday to play in a tournament, sit down and talk to the dealer I know waiting for it to start. Who sits down next to me, none other than Hasan Habib. Well, screw it there went my chances and to make matters worse there was a girl next to me who kept telling the dealer what to do.
Needless to say, I was short stacked, went all-in on 55. The board flops another 5 for a set, but Habib flops the flush. Goodbye, game over.

Vmax, you must be talking about the photo painting on page one of the thread. I think this might be a good time to re-post it. Thanks.

Winner Ted Forrest (Las Vegas, NV) $300,300.

Forrest won his second (1st was 7 card stud event) gold bracelet of the tournament, and 5th overall lifetime. Five WSOP wins puts into the same class with Bones Berland, Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, Layne Flack, Berry Johnston, and Stu Ungar. But one could say that Ted Forrest is really in a class all his own. He’s certainly won as much money as anyone in the game over the past decade -- most of the profits concentrated in high-limit cash games out of the public eye.

Winner Joe Awata (Las Vegas, NV) $221,000.

The real story of Awata’s hard-earned victory dates back two weeks ago, to Event #9 in the $1,500 buy-in No-Limit Texas Hold’em championship. Awata came within a single card of winning the gold bracelet that day, only to see his poker dream shattered when his opponent caught two perfect “runner-runner” cards to loot the biggest pot of tournament.

Winner (The Legendary) TJ Cloutier (Richardson, TX) $90,500.

No tournament player has made more final tables and won more tournaments over the past twenty years than T.J. Cloutier. By his own estimate, he’s won over 60 majors and earned millions of dollars as one of the tournament circuit’s most steady performers. That success has translated into five World Series of Poker gold bracelets, dating back to 1987. Cloutier added to his jewelry collection tonight, winning the Razz World Championship, held at the Horseshoe Casino in downtown Las Vegas.

Two-time WSOP winner Howard “The Professor” Lederer (wins in 2000 Omaha High-Low and 2001 Deuce-to-Seven Lowball) had the chip lead at one point. He seemed to be in position to close the night with a victory. But, it wasn’t to be. Lederer went out when he was drawing to a 6-4 (missed) and lost to Cloutier’s 6-5-4-2-A.
When heads-up play began, T.J. Cloutier enjoyed a chip lead over Dutch Boyd -- $172K to $121K. Cloutier won with a 9-6 low against Boyd, who failed in his attempt to join his “Crew-mates” Scott Fischman and Brett Jungblutt as gold bracelet winners. Boyd received $46,440 as the runner up.

Gary Gibbs topped a record field of 519 players in the $1,000 buy-in Senior’s World Championship. The number of participants was the largest ever for any senior’s event in history – proving that poker is not just a young man’s (or women’s) game.
