"[h=2]Can you sterilize a cloth mask by ironing it?[/h]We're still receiving lots of questions about masks, including this one from Janet S., who is wondering whether ironing her homemade mask will be enough to sterilize it.
The short answer is no. Ironing your cloth mask will not work.
McGeer says that you can destroy some of the virus by heating it up, but it's not enough to effectively sterilize the mask.
"Sterilizing requires a certain time, usually at least 10 minutes above a certain temperature like 65-70 degrees Centigrade, which you can't get from ironing," she says.

Instead, Health Canada recommends laundering it on a hot cycle and drying thoroughly.
"When you wash it, just the soap and water in the washing machine will remove the COVID-19," says McGeer.
But what about other masks, such as disposable paper surgical masks, and coveted N95 masks, which are used in both health-care and construction settings?
Disposable masks are not designed to be reused, and N95 masks also have a limited shelf life.
That said, PPE shortages are forcing some health care facilities to experiment with safely decontaminating and reusing disposable masks. For instance, some hospitals are using UV light and pressurized sterilization machines called autoclaves to clean masks, but these methods cannot be safely replicated at home.

I agree if your in a walk a park with no one say 30 feet from you, you don't need a mask.

However, it has been shown that just breathing or talking releases particles of the virus into the air. How far it goes is not known, although 6 feet is the standard to assume.

N95 masks on Amazon (at least in the US) can only be sold to medical folks). We have a massive shortage of masks in almost all states for first responders, hospital nurses, and folks in nursing homes. Therefore N95 and surgical masks should only be used by the public once there are enough for health care professionals.

It should be the law - where it isn't - that if you are in a public place where maybe near others, at least a cotton mask should be required based on the public health threat far outweighs any rights you selfishly want to claim and be a jerk putting others at risk.

The problem as everyone knows by now is YOU may have the virus but be perfectly healthy but can pass it on to someone else. Any mouth covering prevents most of your breath from going out into the air that could unknowingly infect someone else.

N95 is the only real protection for the hospital worker since "95" relates to it being 95% effective in filtering out tiny particles like the virus. It actually is a respirator mask with a filter cartridge air passes through.

A "surgical mask" (often blue you may see) is something like 40-50% effective or less. I forget the exact amount.

The point of cotton or any other mask is while it is 0% effective in protecting YOU (since the virus is small enough to pass through), it protects everyone else from getting the virus from your breath - especially since it seems 50% of those with the virus are asymptomatic.. They are the lucky ones, but the other 50% may get a severe infection and even die.

There are new reports of young men with no preconditions that are dying from the virus. The numbers are small but relevant. One theory is that younger immune systems are more robust. The strong immune response is now believed to cause the virus to be worse since it is so intense it kills off good cells as well as bad.

Most recently, a significant number of young men (one study of 30-40 yr olds) had no symptoms until they had a massive heart attack or stroke while at home. It seems to be related to the virus, causing blood clotting either near the heart of in the brain. What is unusual is the clotting is in the veins (returning to the heart), not the usual clotting in arteries. Why is a mystery to Drs and scientists at this point.
One surgeon reported while removing a clot from the brain of a young person; he could see new clots forming as he removed the original clot. He said he has never experienced that before.

Sadly the virus is a mystery to most medical experts since it seems to behave much differently than prior similar viruses and is more easily spread just by someone breathing near you. Thus, everyone should wear some kind of mask.

New reports also find it is showing up in some cats, dogs, and tigers. It has less of an effect on them so far. While it is considered not likely, they can spread it to humans (the dead-end theory), this is not fully known at this time. Some folks have pointed out it seems easier for a pet to get a test at a vet, than the human since testing is so limited at least in the US.

"WASHINGTON -- After long resisting wearing a mask in public, U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday he thinks it makes him look like the Lone Ranger -- and he likes it.

"I'm all for masks. I think masks are good," Trump told Fox Business in an interview. "People have seen me wearing one."

Trump's comments came a day after Republican lawmakers suggested that he wear a mask in public to set a good example for Americans."

The point of wearing a mask is to protect others, not necessarily protect yourself. A mask wont protect you against some asshole that refuses to wear a mask. It WILL protect OTHERS from YOU if you have symptoms and are spreading. If everyone wears masks, social distances and washes their hands alot this shit will go away.

That is the narrative (propaganda) they push, but these masks were designed to stop bacteria, not viruses. They keep saying if you cough or sneeze a mask will stop droplets... yes it will but a gazillion virus .0000000000000008 of an inch will also get through the mask and go as far or probably farther than the droplets.

They are accidentaly on purpose over stating deaths ($39,000 extra payment from the govmit to a hospital for each C-19 death in a hospital) and now new infections are being overstated for the "SECOND WAVE!!!" (lately CDC admitted double counting C-19 tests and antibody tests).

These facts will all trickle out after the election... will take awhile.
