From what I've heard, the storylines from the novels were much more graphic, and Carl would have already killed Shane by this point.
What the fuck dude? Did you just reveal a major event in the series? You know most of us haven't read the comics, right?
Fuck. How about a spoiler warning next time?
Ditto... read the comics already but agree that spoiler alerts might be useful in these situations. Although we don't know when the show will insert stories that stray from the comic, the fact of the matter is that it is still a relatively accurate portrayal of the comic and shouldn't risk spoiling the plot of the comic OR the show for others.
how it spread so fast without apparent means of doing so. The Zombies also seem to be of radically different strengths. In one scene a boy is able to get away from the grasp of one, while in another a zombie has the strenth to rip apart Dale's chest.
Maybe it's the "World War Z" book talking from inside my head but I can definitely picture a zombie apocalypse spreading quickly. Think about it, the undead is essentially a highly contagious walking virus with a 100% casualty rate if come into contact with either through mucus membranes/biting/scratch. It's only "instinct" is to feed on flesh and knows nothing about fear, pain, or exhaustion and can only be stopped by killing the brain. Without knowing what the infection really is or it's cure, you can imagine there would be a lot of accidents from people getting to close to the infected (thinking that a bite is harmless) or those trying to avoid detection until they finally turn. Zombies don't get winded or feel the effects of lactic acid buildup.. imagine fighting an enemy that is slow and unintelligent but, has unlimited stamina and will continue to keep killing you until it's brain is turned off.. Makes for a scary thought when you'd be facing multiples of them. Also, it's not so much that the zombies have radical differences in strength but rather they are in different stages of decomposition. The zombie that eviscerated Dale didn't pull him apart with only his arm strength.. but rather I think that a decomposed zombie's fingertips would be essentially be rotting fingernails and bones that can easily tear into flesh and mostly certainly infect an individual that is bleeding profusely from the wound.
If i recall they hinted in one episode that a bite/injury isnt required to get infected. Shane finds two zombified dudes with no bite marks or injuries.
The comic series thus far kinda goes into it later on in the story but doesn't necessarily explain it very clearly either.. The next episode (12 - Better Angels, already read the spoiler script plot) should answer your question though.. Not gonna ruin it for you however cuz it's going to be one epic BAMF episode.

While I will admit that 2nd season did start off kind of slow, the plot-twists and different characters have made up for it IMO. I appreciate that storyline is taking the time to develop the characters (EXCEPT T-DOG ) in the show and reveal that the "Walking Dead" is actually referring to the living and how they are (d)evolving psychologically to adapt to this new world.
Even though he wasn't in the original comic series, Norman Reedus's character has really grown on me and I will be seriously pissed off they kill off badass Daryl.
Oh, and I imagine the group would be a lot better off if they started off the trip this:
And while we're on the topic of the most recent episode:
How about Glenn huh?
Wouldn't it be crazy Merle (Daryl's brother) reappears and ends up as the leader of Randall's (hostage) group? I also think my mind will explode if and when I see the Governor include in the story arc.
