dazz,

They said the last three teams to begin the season 8-0 have won the Super Bowl. ('90 Giants, '91 Redskins & '98 Broncos).

POST BY LOU:
Hammer

The Bears did not have a big time comeback against the Vikings that year.

Big Lou

you are right this was a miracle NOT A COMEBACK.
WTF

Led by a coach who personified the traditions of the team, its founder and a long history that stretched to the very foundations of the National Football League, the Bears would grab the 1985 season from the moment it began and never let it go.

In the early weeks of the season, opponents who jumped to a quick lead over the Bears found it was not an indication of good things to come. In four of the first five games, Chicago came from more than a touchdown behind to win.

In the third week, against the Minnesota Vikings, quarterback Jim McMahon came in from the bench in the third quarter and began what appeared to be a comeback. Before he was through, McMahon had thrown three touchdown passes in less than seven minutes - and the talk changed from comebacks to miracles.

In the fourth week, the Bears demolished the NFC East champion Washington Redskins.

5TP,
I was pretty sure that it wasn't the dope. Thanks for the research on that. Da' Bears were down a lot at that point in the game. I'm wondering where the cut-off point is on the big comeback angle. I think that KC can still win the SB, but they have had a handful of come-from-behind wins this year, as well as a 17 point comeback over the Packers. Apparently, the difference between a 17 point comeback and a 21 point comeback is the difference between winning the SB and watching at home.

5team and Hammer,

The game in question was Week 3 of the 1985 season.

Score at halftime: Vikings 10, Bears 6
Score after 3rd qtr: Bears 30, Vikings 17

McMahon did come into the game and light up the scoreboard but they were only down 8 points midway through the third quarter, which is not the definition of a big time comeback.

Big Lou, could you update the list to also mention the teams that STILL ARE in contention. We could all calculate this ourselves, but it would be easier if you did once for all of us. Thanks!

Personally, I would pass on that because I think anything can happen in that division this season. But if you feel strongly about it, don't let me talk you out of it.

BY THE NUMBERS: 10 — number of teams to open a season 8-0 since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

8 — number of those 8-0 teams that advanced to the Super Bowl that year.

6 — number of those 8-0 teams that went on to win the Super Bowl.

Here are all the teams that began the season 8-0 SU or better, how long they went undefeated, and how far they went in the playoffs:

1969 Rams (11-0) Lost in the Divisional Round
1972 Dolphins (14-0) Won the Super Bowl
1973 Vikings (9-0) Lost the Super Bowl
1975 Vikings (10-0) Lost in the Divisional Round
1977 Cowboys (8-0) Won the Super Bowl
1984 Dolphins (11-0) Lost the Super Bowl
1985 Bears (12-0) Won the Super Bowl
1990 49'ers (10-0) Lost in Conference Finals
1990 Giants (10-0) Won the Super Bowl
1991 Redskins (11-0) Won the Super Bowl
1998 Broncos (13-0) Won the Super Bowl
2003 Chiefs (8-0) ???

Intersting to note that Vermeil is linked to the first and last team on this list as he was the special teams coach for the 1969 Rams under George Allen.
