Home team a hot bet with Welke umpiring
Andrew Avery

The home team is 4-0 in the previous four games which umpire Tim Welke calls balls and strikes. That's where Welke will be Sunday as Cleveland Indians backers hope the mini streak continues versus the Chicago White Sox.

Welke has 27 games behind the plate and the home team is 14-13 in those games.

Indians are -200 moneyline favorites.

Game roundup: Giants beat Tigers behind Posey, Bumgarner
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

DETROIT -- Buster Posey continued his hot streak with three hits, including a solo home run, and Madison Bumgarner tied for the major-league lead in victories to lift the San Francisco Giants to a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday at Comerica Park.

Posey, who played first base, scored twice and walked in his other plate appearance. He is hitting .508 with seven home runs in his last 15 games.

Bumgarner (17-9) pulled even with the Los Angeles Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw in the win column despite not striking out a batter for the first time this season.

Catcher Andrew Susac hit a two-run double during San Francisco's four-run first. Santiago Casilla recorded his 15th save for the Giants (78-64), who pulled to within 1 1/2 games of the Dodgers in the National League West.

First baseman Miguel Cabrera hit two home runs and drove in three runs for the Tigers (77-65). Designated hitter Victor Martinez contributed three hits, including his career-high 30th home run.

Dodgers 5, Diamondbacks 2

LOS ANGELES -- Second baseman Dee Gordon and shortstop Hanley Ramirez triggered a three-run surge in the eighth inning lifting Los Angeles past Arizona before 50,823 fans at Dodger Stadium.

Gordon delivered the go-ahead run with an RBI single and Ramirez added a two-run double to give the Dodgers their fourth straight win and 14th in 18 meetings this season over the Diamondbacks. Los Angeles also maintained its two-game lead in the National League West over the San Francisco Giants.

Reliever Brian Wilson pitched a scoreless eighth inning and closer Kenley Jansen did likewise in the ninth for his 41st save.

Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 3

BOSTON -- Boston scored in each of the first four innings to back another strong start by Clay Buchholz in a win over Toronto at Fenway Park.

Left fielder Yoenis Cespedes and catcher Christian Vazquez each had an RBI double for the Red Sox, who overcame an early deficit to win for the third time in six games.

Buchholz was charged with two runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out five, walking two and retiring 12 straight batters between the second and fifth innings.

Braves 4, Marlins 3

MIAMI -- Evan Gattis hit a 10th-inning solo homer that at first was ruled a triple but ultimately gave Atlanta a win over Miami at Marlins Park.

Gattis' homer, his 22nd of the season, stayed in the ballpark but went over the yellow line in left-center field that equals a home run. Gattis legged out a triple. After a review, he was allowed to walk the final 90 feet for the game-winning run.

The victory went to reliever David Carpenter. Closer Craig Kimbrel earned his 43rd save.

Angels 8, Twins 5

MINNEAPOLIS -- Los Angeles staged yet another late rally to beat Minnesota at Target Field. The Angels maintained a six-game lead over Oakland in the American League West. The A's defeated Houston 4-3 earlier in the day Saturday.

Trailing by two entering the eighth, the Angels took advantage of another meltdown by the Twins bullpen, scoring two runs in the eighth to tie the game and three more in the ninth to take the lead.

It was the third-straight night against the Angels the Twins bullpen allowed a run in either the eighth or ninth inning to lose a game.

Cardinals 5, Brewers 3

MILWAUKEE -- Two-run home runs from Matt Adams and Oscar Taveras led St. Louis over Milwaukee at Miller Park.

Adams returned to the lineup after a two-game absence due to a nagging left oblique. Mired in a 7-for-52 slump over his last 15 games, Adams smacked a 1-1 curveball from Brewers right-hander Kyle Lohse to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.

The five runs allowed by Lohse marked the latest struggles for the right-hander, who went 1-5 with a 7.30 in five August starts. He found himself in trouble early Saturday, putting his team in a 2-0 hole after walking leadoff batter Matt Carpenter who scored on Adams'

14th home run of the season.

Indians 3, White Sox 1

CLEVELAND -- Corey Kluber pitched his third complete game of the season and Jose Ramirez and Michael Brantley had RBI hits in the seventh inning as the Cleveland beat Chicago at Progressive Field.

The right-hander Kluber pitched a five-hitter, striking out seven with no walks.

Cleveland also got a home run from designated hitter Carlos Santana.

Pirates 5, Cubs 0

Pirates 5, Cubs 3 (11 innings, comp. of susp. game)

CHICAGO -- Andrew McCutchen went 3-for-5 with his team-leading 73rd RBI to lead Pittsburgh over Chicago in a regularly scheduled game at Wrigley Field.

The victory in the first game completed a sweep for the Pirates that included a triumph in 11 innings in the continuation of suspended game from Friday.

In the regularly scheduled game, Pirates starter Francisco Liriano won for the first time since July 29 at San Francisco. He was lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning after allowing no runs on three hits, walking two and striking out nine.

Cubs starter Felix Doubront worked five innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He walked two, struck out one and had one balk.

Josh Harrison singled in a go-ahead run in the 11th inning in the suspended game as Pittsburgh snapped a four-game losing.

Reds 2, Mets 1

CINCINNATI -- Chris Heisey hit a go-ahead, pinch-hit home run in the seventh and Johnny Cueto pitched seven strong innings, lifting Cincinnati Reds over New York at Great American Ball Park.

First baseman Todd Frazier also homered for Cincinnati, which snapped a four-game losing streak.

Catcher Travis d'Arnaud went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles for New York, which saw its three-game win streak end.

Phillies 3, Nationals 1

WASHINGTON -- A.J. Burnett allowed one run in seven innings and Ryan Howard drove in the first two runs with a bases loaded single in the third as Philadelphia beat Washington at Nationals Park.

Burnett, pitching with shadows on the infield early in the game, yielded six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Ken Giles pitched a scoreless eighth for the Phillies and closer Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for his 35th save.

Yankees 6, Royals 2

NEW YORK -- Brandon McCarthy pitched effectively into the seventh inning and Martin Prado had three hits in his return to the lineup leading New York to victory over Kansas City at Yankees Stadium.

McCarthy rebounded from losses in Detroit and Toronto by allowing two runs and six hits over 6 2/3 innings. He won for the second time in six starts after winning his first four decisions with New York.

McCarthy also pitched on a day when the Yankees had one of their better days at the plate by scoring more than five runs for the 51st time and getting at least 10 hits for the 47th time this season.

Athletics 4, Astros 3

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland A's rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and beat Houston on shortstop Jed Lowrie's walk-off single with one out at the O.co Coliseum.

A's third baseman Josh Donaldson grounded a leadoff single in the ninth off right-hander Scott Feldman and went to third on catcher Derek Norris' one-out single to center. Closer Chad Qualls took over, and right fielder Josh Reddick greeted him with a two-run, game-tying double off the center-field fence, scoring Donaldson and pinch runner Billy Burns.

Lowrie grounded a single to left, driving in Reddick with the winning run.

Rays 3, Orioles 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A passed ball by catcher Nick Hundley with two outs in the bottom of the ninth allowed the winning run to score as Tampa Bay edged American League East-leading Baltimore at Tropicana Field.

With a 2-0 count on pinch-hitter Ryan Hanigan, Hundley barely tipped a fastball on the outside of the plate from left-handed reliever Andrew Miller and Yunel Escobar scored from third.

Tamps Bay's Drew Smyly was superb in allowing a run on four hits –a Chris Davis homer – in six innings. He struck out eight and walked two.

Royals banking with Ventura on the hill
Andrew Avery

Sitting atop the American League Central, the Kansas City Royals have been a great story this season. Even better is the fact that they've pulled through for their backers as well, sitting fifth in our MLB Money standings.

Royals supporters will look to keep cashing tickets with a reliable arm on the mound at the New York Yankees Sunday. Kansas City will send Yordano Ventura to the mound and are 6-1 in his last seven starts.

Three of those seven starts came on the road away from Kauffman Stadium and the Royals were favored in all seven starts.

The Mirage opened the Yankees as -130 favorites earlier Saturday.

Giants go for sweep

San Francisco (78-64) at Detroit (77-65)

First pitch: Sunday, 8:05 p.m. ET

Line and Total: Tigers -105, Giants -105, Total 8.5

Two of baseball’s juggernauts go toe-to-toe on Sunday night as San Francisco travels east to Detroit and faces the Tigers.

The Giants are working their way towards another playoffs and have won seven of their past nine games going into Friday. They did lose their last series in Colorado though, with the two clubs combining to score 49 runs over the three-game set. On Wednesday, San Francisco had 10 hits, but was trounced 9-2 after going only 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. C Buster Posey (.305 BA) has been on a tear of late and is 28-for-58 (.483) with six doubles, 6 HR, 20 RBI and 16 runs in his past 13 contests. Detroit has allowed the Royals to take over the AL Central, as the club sits two games behind K.C. following Saturday’s action.

The Tigers were on a 9-4 run entering the weekend, and did very well to start the week; taking 3-of-4 games against the Indians, but lost the first two games to the Giants. They scored 25 runs in the four games, even while being shut out in the one loss, and earned a victory on Thursday by a score of 11-4 in 14 innings. DH Victor Martinez (.332 BA) has been the best player on one of the best offensive teams this year, and is 14-for-36 (.389) with three doubles, four homers, 9 RBI and 10 runs in his past 10 games. Looking to help their teams to wins in this contest will be starters RHP Tim Hudson (9-9, 3.08 ERA) of the Giants and LHP Kyle Lobstein (0-0, 3.18 ERA) for the host Tigers. San Francisco has done well on the road, posting a record of 40-31 (.563) in away games while Detroit is 35-32 (.522) in Comerica Park. The Tigers would like to forget the last time these two clubs met up, as the Giants swept Detroit in four games at the 2012 World Series. In the series, the usually potent Tigers' offense scored a meager six runs on 20 hits while San Francisco’s starters earned three wins.

Tim Hudson has defied age, and as a 39-year-old has posted his best ERA since 2010 while having the best control (1.6 BB/9) of his career. In a day where so many of the young pitchers are throwing in the high 90's, Hudson has been successful with a fastball averaging 89.1 MPH and has struck out a mere 5.8 batters per nine innings in 2014. His ability to get batters to hit the ball on the ground has always been a strength for him and his 54% ground-ball rate ranks 12th in the league among starting pitchers (entering Friday). He has had a superb year, but Hudson has allowed five earned runs in two of his past four starts while the Giants have taken a loss in five of his past 10 outings.

Over his 16-year career, Hudson has started against Detroit 14 times with solid results, going 9-2 with a 3.07 ERA and 1.17 WHIP, and has tossed three complete games. Both 3B Miguel Cabrera (12-for-28, 3 RBI) and OF Torii Hunter (9-for-31, 1 HR, 6 RBI) have had solid at-bats against the veteran, but OF Rajai Davis (1-for-6, 2 K's) has not done well in his limited time against the righty. The Giants’ bullpen has been phenomenal this season, going 26-14 (.650) with a 2.87 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, and is 40-for-57 (70%) in save opportunities heading into the series. Santiago Casilla (1.79 ERA, 14 saves) has already blown four saves as the closer, and has been lucky with batters hitting .233 BABIP against him.

Kyle Lobstein has pitched well enough to continue getting starts with a Detroit club that is in the middle of a playoff race, and the last time out he allowed two runs on five hits while striking out 10 batters (3 walks) over 5.1 frames against Cleveland. His strikeouts were certainly the most surprising stat in this game as he averaged 7.8 K/9 in 146 Triple-A innings this season before joining the Tigers. One problem that Lobstein has shown is control, as he has already walked eight batters over his first 17 innings at the major-league level (4.2 BB/9). When facing the Giants for the first time, the youngster will need to be weary as he goes against C Buster Posey who leads the team in average (.305), home runs (19) and RBI (78), and has struck out in just 11.4% of his at-bats.

On the other hand, SS Brandon Crawford (.228 BA) has really struggled, and has struck out in 24% of his at-bats while failing to get a hit in six of his past 10 games played. Before Friday, Detroit’s bullpen had gone 18-16 (.529) with a 4.30 ERA and 1.48 WHIP, and had successfully converted 34-of-48 (71%) saves. Joe Nathan (5.04 ERA, 29 saves) has six blown saves on the season and has walked a career-high 4.5 batters per nine innings while hitters have batted a high .324 BABIP.

Nishikori opens as fave versus Cilic
Andrew Avery

Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic scored major upsets over Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer respectively and it's the former how opens as the favorite.

Sportsbooks have opened their odds with Nishilori the fave at -125 and Cilic at +100.

Nishikori owns a 5-2 record head-to-head with Cilic and the Japanese as the edge on hard surfaces at 3-2.

The pair have played twice in 2014 with Nishikori winning both times - on the hard courts at Brisbane and the clay of Barcelona.

Ti-Cats struggle ATS versus lowly Alouettes
Andrew Avery

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats, currently sitting second in the weak East Division with a 2-6 record (3-5 against the spread), are 1-point road faves at the equally-inept Montreal Alouettes (2-7 SU, 3-6 ATS) but are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings.

Ti-Cats backers have been left frustrated of late as the team has failed to cover the spread in four-straight games heading into Sunday's meeting with the Als.

Most shops have opened the as a pick, with the Cats -1 as of Saturday evening.

At the Gate - Sunday
By Mike Dempsey

Sure, it is the first Sunday of the NFL season, but everyone is going to need some betting action during those long TV time outs and at halftime and there is plenty of good horse betting action this afternoon.

Belmont Park’s 10-race card features a couple of stakes, and they drew short fields and will both be part of the early Pick 5.

The $100,000 Sky Beauty drew a field of five fillies and mares led by Katie’s Garden, who is coming off a sharp win against second level optional claimers. She makes her stakes debut for the John Shirreffs barn and is the 7-5 morning line favorite. The race geos off as the third today.

The following race is the $100,000 Real Courage going seven furlongs on the turf. The race drew eight but two are main-track-only entrants so we are going to see six go to the post.

Za Approval gets some needed class relief and is the 9-5 morning line favorite. The gelding has lost five in a row and appears to have lost a step. He landed in the exacta in seven of his eight starts last year including a game second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile behind Horse of the Year Wise Dan.

The early Pick 5 looks very hittable and it looks like we can beat several of the favorites in the late Pick 4.

Here is today’s opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $12,500 (1:05 ET)
6 Allie Sweet 7-2
1 Rettalfa 2-1
4 Inaflash 6-1
2 Golden Rule 5-1

Analysis: Allie Sweet set the early fractions and weakened to finish a well beaten fifth last out for a $25,000 tag in the mud trying to go nine furlongs. The filly was claimed out of the race by the Balsamo barn that is 25% winners first off the claim. She jams her in here for a $12,500 tag while cutting her back to six furlongs. Her last win came going a one-turn mile at Laurel Park back in February against $35,000 starter allowance foes. She has enough early speed she should be able to handle the cut back. The barn is 3 for 10 (with a +ROI) moving runners from route to sprint.

Rettalfa was squeezed back coming out of the gate, stalked the early pace and finished up well for the runner up spot last out for a $16,000 tag. Two back she won over the surface here, beating $14,000 non-winners of three. She owns a solid pace profile throughout and gets a jock upgrade from the chilly bug Rice to Lezcano. She fits with her best and except for her sixth place finish here three back she usually is right in the mix.

Wagering
WIN: #6 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 1,6 / 1,2,4,6
TRI: 1,6 / 1,2,4,6 / 1,2,4,5,6

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 8 Md Sp Wt (4:45 ET)
8 Profess 6-1
3 Fila Primera 5-2
2 Written in Stars 5-1
1 Birkenhead 8-1

Analysis: Profess was outrun in her debut but caught a sloppy track at Monmouth Park and Mott usually does not have them fully cranked first time out anyway. Now the filly tries turf here and this gal has the pedigree to handle the surface switch. She is by war Front out of the stakes winner Preach ($304,656) who has dropped 10 winners including five turf winners as well as dirt stakes winner Pulpit ($728,200). Expecting to see a much better effort out of this filly here.

Fila Primera is a $250,000 purchase making her debut for the Chad Brown barn that is 22% winners (with a +ROI) with first timers. The trainer won with 5 of 13 debut runners on turf at the Spa meeting. The filly is by war Front out of a Smart Strike mare, her first foal to race. Decent works and she debuts with lasix. Tough to toss anything this barn has been sending out recently.

Wagering
WIN: #8 to win at 9-2 or better.
EX: 3,8 / 1,2,3,8
TRI: 3,8 / 1,2,3,8 / 1,2,3,8,10

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Monmouth Park:

MTH Race 8 Hcp $16,000s (4:28 ET)
3 Dancing Lounge 5-2
9 Skiffs Brewmeister 5-1
7 Grand Rapport 2-1
5 Oklahoma Den 6-1

Analysis: Dancing Lounge stalked the early pace and finished up well for the runner up spot last out against similar at Philly last out going 1 1/8 miles. The winner of the race was Saylers Creek, who came back to beat $25,000 starter allowance foes at the Spa in his next outing on Aug. 27. The fourth place finisher Turbin also won next out, beating Alw-2 optional claimers at Penn National. Our top pick won his three previous starts and eight of 21 on the turf overall inn his career. Nine furlongs seems to be his best distance but he looks capable of handling this group.

Skiffs Brewmeister made a good late run to get up and beat $16,000 starter handicap foes her least out in his second start off the claim by the O'Connell barn. The gelding looks headed in the right direction for the new barn and while he did not fire in his lone go at today's distance he looks sharp enough to handle the extra round here.

Wagering
WIN: #3 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 3,9 / 3,5,7,9
TRI: 3,9 / 3,5,7,9 / 3,5,7,8,9

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Belmont Park
R3: #1 Tahoe Tigress 8-1
R4: #7 West Hills Giant 15-1
R5: #1 Pulling G’s 8-1
R6: #8 Happily Ever 10-1
R7: #3 Archer Hill 8-1
R7: #11 Hooked Forever 15-1
R8: #1 Birkenhead 8-1
R10: #9 Splendid Gold 8-1

Good luck today!

Race 7 - $25,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet (34 - 64 / $138.80): RITASCAPE (8th)

Spot Play: PHOTO SURPRISE (6th)

Race 1

(4) GREEN ACRES was much improved last out and should hit the ticket with another good effort. (8) OMYGOODNESS mare looks to be the trotter to beat coming off a victory against similar. (5) WE ALL BLEED RED filly is a disappointment never progressing better than what she shows, however she faces a very soft bunch.

Race 2

In an wide open race tough to gauge (4) BANDS ALEXIS went a good effort last out and will be firing early. (1) SHOWMETHE Z TAM two-year-old filly faces older more seasoned foes but could have the most upside in the race. (5) ALLPOWERNOEMOTION nice looking colt has a good burst of speed when he minds his manners.

Race 3

(8) ALWAYS ABOUT KATY Indiana champion mare finds a soft spot to make it two in a row but will need to race better than she did at Maywood. (2) LOVE THIS PLACE was a first over winner last out and should be much closer turning for home. (6) SEEYOUATTHEFINISH dropped and popped with the upgraded driver last out, however the pacer is in tough and is best used underneath.

Race 4

(2) CELEBRITY HERCULES historically has raced much better at this track; big chance. (3) ROCK HOLLYWOOD gelding has been racing gamely and could use a smooth trip. (4) FOX VALLEY VETO got tired late last out for the first time all year. The sophomore trotter will likely be asked only late; use underneath.

Race 5

(3) BEST MAN HANOVER has been razor sharp facing much tougher opponents; short price. (4) OUR DRAGON KING was much better last start after a couple of clunkers. The well bred pacer is capable but needs the top choice to be a little short as well. (7) DONT WORRY B HAPPY has just missed in her last three against some very nice horses.

Race 6

(6) PHOTO SURPRISE last year's two-year-old champ is just now back in racing shape and should offer a great price. (5) BOBBY B BREEZE earned a nice victory last out and will be in a good spot early. (8) BIG BILL BREEZE was dominant last out for new connections; threat.

Race 7

(2) MAJOR STARLIGHT well bred gelding gets sent out for a trainer that has a good winning percentage at the track. (1) MADOFF just raced evenly last out against a tough bunch. The six-year-old stallion benefits from the rail and could have more to offer. (3) SAILOR'S FORTUNE has been knocking on the door against this same bunch; threat.

Race 8

(10) RITASCAPE the 4-year-old mare lays over the field on ability and needed her last start. (5) FEEL LIKE DANCING four-year-old pacer doesn't look the best on paper but she is facing much easier competition besides the top choice. (7) BABE'S CHIP is really fast when right and was the driver's choice.

Race 9

(1a) SAY NO MO will need to overcome a tough post but the trotter has shown much more than the field on the year. (3) STONEBRIDGE ULTIMO gets sent out for a provisional driver but could be in the mix with some racing luck. (6) POWERFUL FORCE mare finds an inconsistent bunch and could hit the ticket if she minds her manners.

Race 10

(8) NATIVE LIGHTS will look to make it three in a row for a new barn. (4) WILDARTISCAPE gelding has been racing much better than his record shows; threat. (6) ODDS ON SERPENS well bred pacer is really fast off the gate and will offer a big price off.

DRF HARNESS

Race 7 - $5,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Race 1

(3) SOMESIZESOMESTYLE paced a 1:21 final three quarters last time and seems to be reaching his peak form for trainer Ron Burke. (1) MATTAMERICAN has proven speed and figures to be using it from the inside. (2) SOME PLAYA gets Sears in the bike and looms an longshot player in the exotics.

Race 2

(4) ITS THAT TIME was used hard in his debut for this barn and paid the price late. New driver Ron Pierce should have an easier time on the engine this week. (2) GUNS AN ROSES is back in the Oakes barn where he won three starts back. (6) M K G gets a hot driver in the bike and could wake up at a price.

Race 3

(3) HARLEY MOMMA has missed some time with sickness but qualified back well. She is the most talented filly in the race. (4) HIGHEST PEAK should be on the go early and prove a tough competitor. (2) BIKINI SO TEENY is capable with a top effort.

Race 4

(4) SCOTT ROCKS gets some serious class relief and should bring a big effort. (3) VERDAD drops a notch and won his only start over the track this year. (8) CRAVEN THE BEACH has been in form for some time now; maybe.

Race 5

(2) UVA HANOVER should sit no worse than second and get the job done in the lane. (8) AMPED UP HANOVER figures to be amped up from the start. Can he fire off the gate and last in the stretch? (4) AUSPICIOUS HANOVER gets class relief but still needs a top effort to menace the top two.

Race 6

(5) COLBY JATE is razor sharp and deserves the call. (4) MICKEY HANOVER had no shot from post eight in the Cup & Saucer. This spot is easier. (7) BETTORS GLASS could get a decent piece with a smooth trip.

Race 7

(4) TYRA has proven capable at this level in the past and has a reasonable chance at the upset. (5) KATIE SAID is as sharp as can be and clearly the one to beat. (1) GALLIE BYTHE BEACH has been a huge disappointment this year but still merits a look against this group.

Race 8

(7) GREAT SOUL drops down the class ladder and figures to awaken. (5) ST PETE STAR has arguably been facing tougher lately at Pocono. (6) REMISSIONOFSINS was a good second at this level two starts back. (4) ONESPORTONLY has raced well in both starts with Gingras in the bike.

Race 9

(5) LIFETIME PURSUIT is the queen of this division right now. Hambo Oaks winner is far and away the one to beat. (3) TAKE THE MONEY gets a barn change to Ron Burke. We’ve seen this stable wake horses up in the past. (7) DESIGNED TO BE is a very talented filly but could be hurt by the outside post.

Race 10

(1) MCWICKED is certainly the most accomplished colt in this field. Is he a complete lock? No. But he really figures to win. (7) SOMEWHERE IN L A has won both of his starts at Philly and couldn’t be much sharper. (2) SOMETIMES SAID is another red hot foe. He has an upset shot with the right trip. (3) LIMELIGHT BEACH should be firing off the gate.

Race 11

(7) FATHER PATRICK had a couple of bumps in the road recently but got right back on track in last week’s Zweig. I still believe he is the best 3YO trotter in the nation. (8) NUNCIO is a quality opponent who looks clearly second best. (1) DATSYUK has a shot at second if one of the top two has a bad trip.

Race 12

(3) BEACH GAL has yet to win the big one yet but seems just as fast as (1) SANDBETWEENURTOES and will clearly offer a better price. The latter is perfect in eight 2014 starts; one to beat. (7) WEEPER was freshened up and should be flying off the wings of the gate.

Race 13

(5) P H SUPERCAM finds a good spot and should be handled aggressively. (2) SPARKY MARK has a bit of seconditis but is clearly a player. (7) ATTA BOY DAN only needs a smooth trip to menace.

Race 14

(2) ULTIMATE BEACHBOY doesn’t face a very tough field and should get the job done. (5) SECOND WIND N has been fairly consistent but can’t seem to get over the hump. (7) SANTANA ONE gets a class break but only has one win on the year.

# 4 SWISS TART 9/2

# 1 BILLY ONE LITE 2/1

# 6 YOU'RE MY BOY BLUE 8/1

SWISS TART looks very good to best this field. Ortiz will almost certainly be able to get this horse to break out early in this race. This racer has some longshot handicapping angles going for him. Has very strong Equibase Class Figures relative to this group - worth a look. BILLY ONE LITE - Boasts formidable Equibase Speed Figs on average overall when measured up against the rest of this field. This horse with Rivera in the saddle makes him a solid contender. YOU'RE MY BOY BLUE - Should best this field here, showing very good figs of late. Over time, this trainer has a very good ROI at this distance/surface.

# 8 JOHN GALT 5/1

# 6 STORMIN LARRY 6/1

# 1 FUZZY DEE JAY 3/1

I think JOHN GALT is a decent choice. Ran a strong last race. Jockey's recent return on investment figs make this gelding a very good bet. Has been racing admirably in races of this distance, going 1 out of 2 under similar conditions. STORMIN LARRY - Must be used in the exotic bets. Meyers has a reliable 21 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface. FUZZY DEE JAY - When Cowans uses Prescott there's a good chance for profits. Will probably come out strong - I have liked the way this colt has moved sharply to the front end recently.

#10 BELLA'S DIAMOND (ML=7/2)
#6 ARCTIC CHARM (ML=4/1)

BELLA'S DIAMOND - Last time around the track was at Louisiana Downs in a race with a class number of 50. Dropping considerably in class figure this time puts her in a solid position in this race. ARCTIC CHARM - Have to like the way Simpson has raced this filly back into shape off the layoff. Horse is well spotted in this sprint and I think she'll run well today. Was in a $5,000 Maiden Claiming race at Louisiana Downs last out. That clash had an Equibase class figure of 50 and she is moving down today. A certain strong challenger. This pony coming off a nice try in the last month is a win candidate in my opinion. This thoroughbred already beat the probable favorite in the last race at Louisiana Downs.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 CHEWYS DOLL (ML=9/2), #5 ROSETTA'S CHARM (ML=5/1), #3 GLORY BE TRUE (ML=8/1),

CHEWYS DOLL - Tough to put your cash on this speed merchant. Too much speed in the event. ROSETTA'S CHARM - Doesn't appear to be in a satisfactory spot today. GLORY BE TRUE - The Brain tells me to keep away from horses in sprint contests that haven't hit the board in sprint contests of late. This vulnerable equine hasn't been close to the winner at the finish line lately. Finished fourth in her most recent race with a most unsatisfactory fig. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this bunch.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - ARCTIC CHARM - Earnings per start is one measure of class I like to check out. This steed is tops in the bunch and has a good shot to beat this crew.

#2 PENNY SIXPENCE (FR) (ML=6/1)
#7 WORLDLY SARAH (ML=7/2)

PENNY SIXPENCE (FR) - This jockey and handler have a positive return on investment when they are put together. Have to forget about that last race on the turf. This filly should do better hitting the dirt in this race. WORLDLY SARAH - This filly is in good form, having run a good race on August 17th, finishing third. Atop this thoroughbred on Aug 17th and Herrera is yet again in the irons this time. I believe this thoroughbred will be right there at the wire. Gets Lasix for the second time, so Jackson must have confidence in her. Another way to evaluate class is earnings per start. This horse has the topmost in the field. I think she'll be close at the finish.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 UNDER STUDY CAREER (ML=3/1), #6 KAZAM (ML=4/1), #1 SIZZLING BEL (ML=9/2),

UNDER STUDY CAREER - When examining today's class rating, she will have to register a much better speed rating than in the last race to compete in this dirt sprint. KAZAM - One should normally not play a pony in the next start after finishing off the board following a long vacation. SIZZLING BEL - Finished fourth last time out. Would have to perk up to hit the board in today's event.

RACE #3 - BELMONT PARK - 2:07 PM EASTERN POST

The Sky Beauty Stakes

8.0 FURLONGS DIRT FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $100,000.00 PURSE

#3 MONTANA NATIVE
#5 KATIE'S GARDEN
#4 TOASTING
#1 TAHOE TIGRESS

This race honors the career of Sky Beauty ... in 1993-94, this filly dominated the New York distaff scene as a 3- and 4-year-old. She won 10 graded stakes races, eight of which were Grade I events. She took the three Grade I races that made up the former Triple Tiara, the Acorn Stakes and Mother Goose Stakes and the Coaching Club American Oaks. Additionally, she won the Grade I Alabama Stakes and the Grade II Rare Perfume Stakes. Sky Beauty seemed destined for a 3-year-old championship, but lost out to Hollywood Wildcat after that filly won the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Santa Anita Racetrack. At age four, Sky Beauty won the Go For Wand Handicap, the Ruffian Handicap, the Shuvee Handicap, and Hempstead Handicap (all Grade I races) plus the Grade III Vagrancy Handicap. She failed to live up to expectations in the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Churchill Downs, running unplaced, but accomplished enough to be voted the 1994 Eclipse Award for Outstanding Older Female Horse.

Here in the initial running of The Sky Beauty, #3 MONTANA NATIVE, qualifies as a TrackMaster PLUS "PowerPony," takes a class drop (-2), and is the overall speed leader in; this stakes field racing at the afternoon's distance of a mile on the dirt. She's hit the board in four of her last five outings, with her last three "board hit efforts," including a win in her 3rd race back, also qualifying as "POWER RUNS." #5 KATIE'S GARDEN has hit the board in each of her last five outings, winning in each of her last three "adventures," including a "POWER RUN WIN" in her last start.

# 7 PLAY ME RIGHT 5/1

# 4 GREEK RULER 9/2

# 5 ATTACK MODES BILLY 7/2

The consensus this time is that PLAY ME RIGHT is the one to beat. Has great TrackMaster Speed Ratings and most definitely has to be considered for a bet in this contest. The brain trust always likes a proven player. This horse's high winning percentage is evidence of that. GREEK RULER - Hands down the best position at Alberta Downs is the 4. The win statistic is great. With better than average win statistics, Hoerdt should have this gelding in excellent position to win the contest. ATTACK MODES BILLY - Can't ignore based on TrackMaster SRs which have been great (89 avg) of late. With a 91 average class figure, this fine animal has one of the most compelling class advantages in the group of animals.

# 4 OUR RYALL FLUSH 2/1

# 2 TICK TACK 3/1

# 3 DANS IDEAL 5/1

Really keen on the probability of OUR RYALL FLUSH taking down the winner's share this time. Could dominate this field of horses, just look at the speed figure - 62 - from her most recent effort. The panel of smart guys always likes a proven performer. This horse's high winning percentage is proof of that. Drawing the 4 hole at this track has lead to an above average win percentage. TICK TACK - The trainer/horse combo statistics point out that this tandem are solid in the money finishers when working together. Appears that this harness racer's running style fits well in this contest. Surely will be there at the finish. DANS IDEAL - Has very good TrackMaster speed figs and most likely has to be considered for a bet in this race. Has a strong shot here, if he can repeat his back racing class.

(925) SEATTLE MARINERS at (926) TEXAS RANGERS

Take: (926) TEXAS RANGERS +130

The Mariners are still contending for a playoff spot, the Rangers are simply playing for pride. But this is a strength vs. weakness spot and I see it as a game where the upset looms as a decent possibility.

No knocks on James Paxton. The Mariners rookie lefty has been rock solid and there’s no way it’s a cinch to try and beat him. But I was ultra impressed with Derek Holland as he finally got off the DL for Texas and he now gets to take on team he’s pretty well owned as a major leaguer.

Holland’s presence for the full season would obviously have meant quite a bit for Texas, and I can imagine no one feels worse about the goofy injury he incurred than the veteran southpaw. But he sure looked sharp in his first start back with the big club, and I’m of the opinion Holland wants to build some momentum that he can take into 2015.

The weakness for Seattle is its offense against lefties. That’s the strength for the Rangers, who in spite of all their problems this season, have still been able to bang around southpaws. Paxton is a cut above the norm to be sure, and the Rangers certainly aren’t hitting much against anyone right now with that patchwork lineup.

This is mainly a play on Holland. If he’s right, and off that last outing I’ve no reason to think he won’t be, then the Rangers are a solid value here at the current price tag. Not that the Mariners don’t rate being the chalk, but I can’t see it being quite this much. I’ll look to the Rangers as a live dog call today.

(467) CLEVELAND BROWNS VS (468) PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Take: (468) PITTSBURGH STEELERS

The Browns begin play with Brian Hoyer at QB and Johnny "Football" Manziel ready in the wings. While I believe Manziel is a bust in this league, there is no doubt he's already a money maker in apparel and notoriety. There was of course the "finger" incident during the preseason and now he's trademarking names, all without having played a regular season snap in the NFL. The big question is how will the Browns replace Josh Gordon, who has been suspended for the season and reportedly is selling cars this year. Without one of the best receivers in the league, Hoyer will have to do with a bunch of no-name receivers including Cowboys reject Miles Austin, Andrew Hawksins and Taylor Gabriel. This Browns team just won't have the firepower to compete with a much improved Steelers offense. The Steelers have lost their last three season openers so you know they want to stop that streak right now. The good news is that the Steelers haven't lost at home to the Browns since a 33-13 drubbing in week five of the 2003 season. The Steelers have nine new starters to this year's edition and that might be just the ticket to improve on a lackluster 8-8 campaign from last year. The Browns just don't have enough offense and while this isn't the old Steel curtain defense, it should be well equipped to handle a no-name Browns offense. Your Bonus Play for Sunday is on the Pittsburgh Steelers.
