The NBA playoffs were strange this year as Chalk just kept covering over and over. It took two rounds to clear that out. There was so much chalk money, the sharps did not balance. Then the next series numbers just kept hitting, so many backdoors, how many times did that free half point come in handy, 5 or 6. But the Finals were probably bad for books. They did manage to clean up on all of the Laker futures, but Motown was a heavy dog. The game #2 8 was just devastating as maybe a few squares lost their beer money, but overall the books paid all winners. No sharps lost, at worst tied. Takes a ton of balanced action to make up for a total payout game. Then the last two games were middles on the totals. Especially damaging were game 4 totals. Both game total and 2nd half total again were dead solid middles. Again, the sharps just collected. I had 4 positions myself on those, opposed of course, collected 3, pushed 1. I went for low juice vs. the hook on 2nd half total. Game #5 had a lot of late Laker action, a reprieve, but again, the 2nd half total landed on the opener. It takes a good 15-20 games to make up for one solid middle. For all those numbers to hit, in the Finals was without a doubt loser for most books. I have seen NBA playoffs where nothing, I mean nothing hits, for the entire playoffs. What you have to keep in mind when these numbers hit, sometimes the books write a ton of +8 1/2. Then they move to 8. Maybe some balancing but all that pushes. Then they put up -7 1/2, and all of the chalkies nail -7 1/2. Or the middlers who bought the +8 1/2 are now looking for lay numbers. So instead of a hopeful 5% hold, they get ripped for a 100% or close loss. I used to work in the books, as a house player and when these numbers drop, they just write winners. We used to call it a blood bath. Although we as players revel when the numbers drop, including myself, it can have a devastating effect on the books...Best wishes...OF
