Ok, I'll be the bad guy here.

We all need health care and we all know it. I work and have a health care plan. If you're employer doesn't offer this then you must pay for it and have a private plan.

If a person doesn't have a plan they must ask themselves why they don't have a plan. If they can't afford a plan then essentially you're saying a person can't afford a plan so those of us that do should pay for the people that can't afford it and guys like me don't think that's right.

I'm very sorry that your mom is in pain but it's her fault she's a heavy woman right? I'm sure you and her could've seen this coming from a long ways away. Americans are by and large (no pun intended) overweight and there's no personal accountability. It's a known fact that being overweight causes many more health problems. So, by providing universal health care you're asking me to pay for someone else who can't maintain a healthy lifestyle and again, I don't think that's right.

Now, rip away please but I'm only providing an opposite opinion here. There are two sides to everything.

Bingo. Sorry to hear about your Mom.

It is actually $338 per month. My employer covers $300 and if they did not do so, they would have to pay higher wages in order to stay competitive. I would be better off earning an extra $4 000 per year I could save, then paying medical bills out of pocket whenever they arise. But that is not possible under the American insurance system

The standards already have been lowered so much because we see both people who recieve care and don't pay into the system and because there are people who do pay who want to maximize the returns on their investment by recieving as much as possible

The system may not encourage smoking and bacon double cheeseburgers, but it absolutely does encourage unnecessary tests and x-rays and prescription drugs and follow-up visits. And for every person who gets more of this than they pay, the doctors and hospitals have to raise prices. And they keep raising prices until no one can afford it unless they have insurance. Which brings us back to the problem of the insured trying to squeeze out as much as possible rather than as little as necessary

Tom G, you would rather save the 4G's a year till you get really ill. Just like you could save on car insurance till you get in an accident.

I agree with you about some of the unnecessary garbage that is done but I would rather it be overdone than underdone. You don't get more than one body. Not only should you take care of it but you should put yourself in a position to have it checked up on and fixed if need be. Personal Responsibility.

At my former employer I saw people who took advantage of welfare or SSD and disability. It made me sick. I might be biased here but I think this is a different situation. My mother and father moved here from an old school European farm town 39 years ago. My father did grunt work and hard labor for the city for 17 years until he died leaving my mother with 3 children ages 10 (me)- 19. She did try to find work but she has a 5th grade education, she has a heavy accent and doesnt write well and had only farmed up until this point (she was 42). She took jobs at restaurants and cleaning offices for a while and now she relies on my fathers pension. I believe she makes just over 12k a year. She has never been in a situation to get a job with great benefits. She came from Italy to the U.S. for a better opportunity. This is what america was built on. She wasnt expecting my father to die 17 years later but her children were settled in this country.

Uno,
As I pointed out, medical costs are so high because of the insurance system. If we eliminate that, paying for the vast majority of all medical costs would be easily affordable. Paying for disasters might be a problem, but if the government was willing to help out at a small fraction what they currently payout, anyone could survive

Even in the current system, the government is going to help out in some way, so why not just keep the money in my bank account rather than the insurance companies bank account?

Further, I could have (should have?) have pushed as hard as possible for a deployment to a warzone and come home with veteran's status and VA benefits, rather than just letting my time in service run out having only left the country once for a few weeks

Also Uno,
somewhat important is that with the extra income to spend on medicine, I could choose how to spend it rather than the insurance company tell me how to spend it

Also, with our current system, if I show up to a doctor and try to negotiate a price, they will refuse. They will however do that with the insurance company on nearly every bill. If that were a landscaping company, catering service or auto mechanic it would be borderline illegal to charge such drastically different rates ... and absolutely illegal to charge anything above an original estimate.

I don't think anything is a birth right in our country and that's not what it was founded on. You must work hard for everything in our society and if you don't then I shouldn't have to pay for you.

My mother is 64 years old and her legs are in so much pain she cant sleep at night. She is a heavy woman and the last time I was over the house she had been out in the garden for a half hour and her leg was turning purple. I told her she had to go see a doctor right away. I talked to her today and she told me she called the doctors office but they wont take her because she doesnt have medical insurance. She said she is gonna wait until she turns 65 (october). This is fucking bullshit. There is something wrong here.

take her to the emergency room, where they can't refuse care

walk in clinics also an option, although they may ask for same day payment

just one of a million such great stories

my mother came here from war torn Italy with an elementary school education, piss poor and couldn't speak English.

She worked at restaurants, went to school to become a food service supervisor, began running kitchens at nursing homes where everyone loved her, saved every penny and forced me to go to college.

She now owns her home, 6 investment properties, has two pensions & social security.

There are very few people who had to overcome more obstacles than her. She never even dreamed anybody owed her anything.

Yes, something is wrong here. Get her to the emergency room. What's wrong with you. It's your mother. If there are cost, you pay. Get another job. Or two. DO YOUR DUTY. It's your mother!!!!

Could not have said it better. We all have obstacles to overcome in life. Some people make it happen while others don't.

Of course Im not gonna let her wait it out. I never considered anything else. I called my sister and shes taking her to an urgent care doctor tomorrow. Im furious about my mother being denied on her own attempt. People are stubbourn when they're sick and my mother would wait it out if it were up to her but its not.
