Nightmare for the NFL? This is ratings for the NFL. If it wasnt then ole Roger would have been fired long ago. I think he went to School with Vince Mccmahon.

If pats win super bowl....if they do nothing before the game in regards to this mess...it will not be good for the nfl. He should be fired...and should have been months ago. The guy is a complete idiot...he's lucky most owners are idiots and don't know better. Rozell would have never done things like this.

The effect of temperature on football inflation.

Subject: Footballs inflated in a 75 F degree locker room then taken out to a playing field at a temperature of 50 degrees F.

Question: How much would the change in temperature decrease the pressure in the football?

Ideal Gas Law PV=nRT applies. Pressure times volume is equal to the number of moles times the gas constant times the temperature of the gas (in degrees Kelvin).

Thus, given a constant amount of air in the football and a negligible volume change, the pressure will obey:

P = nRT/V

The change in pressure is thus proportional to the change in temperature,

The 75 degree locker room has an absolute temperature of 297o K

The 40 degree playing field has an absolute temperature of 283o K

The change in temperature of 14o K will thus cause a drop in pressure of 14/297 = 4.7%

To translate this into a pressure change we must recall that football pressure is measured in gauge pressure, relative to the atmospheric pressure of 15 psi.

So the absolute pressure within a football pumped to 13 psi is 13 +15 = 28psi absolute.

The 4.7% drop applied to the absolute pressure gives a drop of 1.32 psi.

Thus, the pressure within the football at game time will be only 13 -1.32 = 11.68 psi and thus well below regulation gauge pressure of 12.5-13.5psi.

If the footballs were were at just 12.5psi to start....which is very conceivable because it is known that Brady likes psi at lowest (or even below) lowest what would be if the footballs in question were inflated within that 75 F degree locker room then taken out to a playing field at a temperature of 50 degrees F?

The 4.7% drop applied to the absolute pressure of 12.5 +15 = 27.5psi would be adjusted to balls losing 1.3psi to be at 11.2psi by game time.

Additionally, pressure is lost every time you stick a needle in to check the pressure.

Conclusion: It seems highly likely that the Patriots equipment manager checked all 12 balls in a warm locker room and they lost pressure merely by cooling off on the field.

In addition, the cold rain would have accelerated the heat transfer out of the balls.

Finally, if the indoor inflation air was very humid, there would be an additional loss of pressure due to water vapor condensation on the inside of the bladder as the temperature of the football dropped.

^^^^ interesting

I know they said the Colt's balls were tested and were legal, but did they lose pressure too?

if the Pats started at rock bottom, they can't lose anything and stay legal

Some of you guys are just plain delusional.Brady taking a little air out of the ball is the equivalent of a curved stick in hockey. (Two minute penalty) Or too much pine tar on a bat.
You guys would die to have Belichick or Brady on your team.

I post that not to try and vindicate them, Many QBs, past and present and most recently Brady Quinn, have said "doctoring balls" is something that QBs do from High School forward and that this has been common within NFL since they used balls that could be "fudged" with psi-wise.

Intuitively, common sense would lead us to believe weather effects air pressure. Most of us have experienced this with our car or truck tires.

Your question about why Indianapolis's balls didn't also show under legal would need to be addressed, psi should have been lost under these conditions to all balls.

Some may say maybe Colts inflate to TOP of legal psi range?

Aaron Rodgers does. Even sneaks balls a bit over....14-4.5? If Luck likes a Hard ball that would be an explanation of why Colt's balls were still legal.

I have no dog in this fight, my only bet thus far on the National Anthem. I will likely be on Seattle in fact. Just want all possible relevant info considered within this witch hunt.

To account for the 2 psi drop the footballs would have to have been inflated in a 90 degree room.

As usual, blind pats fans just don't get it. This team cheats, it is in their dna. Love brady but bill is average without him....just check clev brown years.

If it's no big deal than why the dog and pony show of denials? It's because it goes to the integrity of the game and the pats could care less about that.

WHAT has only happened once in the history of cold weather football?

If u meant a DB whining about a football then the coaching staff of an NFL team making a big deal out of something they knew was, as pointed out above, the equivalent of curved stick penalty gtfo of the ice for 2 min then yes...

First time in the history of cold weather football that a team getting blown out for the 3rd consecutive time has tried to jack the team whooping their ass up by snitching them out for something the whiny wussies knew was no big deal.

Might be like another poster said though....NFL orchestrated this whole crap taking a page from Vince McMahon's playbook to get more press than any Super Bowl has had before.
"Hey...how about we get the game not just on PrimeTime news but maybe the LEAD STORY?"

"Wouldn't be interesting to see what ratings on the game are then...if we could pull that off?"

I intend to keep smoking. How about you start smoking something BETTER that'll make you less dumb?

huh? he didnt say that. He said this;

"I didn't alter the ball in any way," You saying he panicked and lied? :) he kinda looked uncomfy at the presser..........:)

any sightings of the equipment chap? in Costa Rica yet? :)

the commish 'investigation' may be completed by................., well, anyone know? ...

i think the NFL needs to inject some class, some grace, some beauty to de-fog...i'm thinking Josh and the elegant , briillllllllllllllllllllant Sarah. Pre-game? here they are......

Why do you guys keep using false stories? Jackson already said he didnt feel the ball any different and the Colts and Ravens have already come out and said they didnt make any complaints. This story all started with 1 guy not on the fb field and of course ESPN and Chris Mortenson ran with this story to drive ratings. Man let the NFL make there findings and then do something about it The NFL hasnt even talked to Brady yet, that should say something right there but of course you will the conspiracy theorists that love the drama and have sat in forums all week debating this. Just let it go until the investigation is over.

From the gossip queens at the Herald (http://thetrack.bostonherald.com/moreTrack/view.bg?articleid=149076):

Bill Belichick has been named The Other Man
in an ugly New Jersey divorce case and the jilted hubby has asked the court to let his lawyers quiz the New England Patriots head coach about his relationship with the missus, a blond fortysomething mother of two.

Vincent Shenocca, a 42-year-old New Jersey construction worker, filed for divorce from his wife, Sharon, a former receptionist with the New York Giants, on the grounds of “extreme mental cruelty.” Shenocca’s court papers say his wife of 10 years “has had a relationship with Bill Belichick for several years” and would not end it, despite her husband’s pleas.

“This relationship appears to have blossomed, including more frequent telephone calls, and (Mrs. Shenocca’s) receipt of large sums of money and expensive gifts from Mr. Belichick, which she has used to purchase expensive clothing, pocketbooks, watches, a treadmill and maid service, most of which she initially hid from (her husband),” the New Jersey court papers say.

Shenocca told his wife “that he did not feel comfortable with her receipt of expensive gifts and large sums of money from Mr. Belichick,” the papers continue, but she “refused to consider (his) feelings and has continued her relationship with Mr. Belichick.”

Shenocca’s attorneys filed a request with the court yesterday asking for permission to take Belichick’s deposition to quiz him about what exactly is going on between him and the attractive blonde. A hearing is set for early August.

Sharon Shenocca, described as a slim, blue-eyed 41-year-old stay-at-home mom, reportedly met Belichick when she was with the Giants. Belichick, 54, was the defensive coordinator there until 1990 and Vincent Shenocca believes that his wife and the coach have been involved for several years.

He claims that Belichick has sent limos to the house to pick up his wife, that he flew her to Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston, and that he has plied her with large amounts of cash. Mrs. Shenocca reportedly is looking at posh pads in Brooklyn, N.Y. and her husband is questioning how she can afford pricey real estate when she doesn’t work.

“He is heartbroken,” said one inside source. “He loved his wife and strongly surmises something is going on with her and Bill Belichick.”

Sharon Shenocca did not return calls yesterday. In her court papers she admits receiving gifts from “an individual,” but says that she never hid the friendship from her husband and that the relationship was “plutonic” (sic).

“Monies that I received from this individual were shared with (her husband),” Mrs. Shenocca said, adding that Vincent Shenocca “became unreasonably upset and jealous regarding my friendship with this other individual, often becoming loudly and profanely critical of (her) friendship outside of the marriage.”

She claims that her husband’s outbursts have been so virulent that “her health and safety have become endangered and it is improper and unreasonable to expect (her) to cohabit with (her husband).”
Vincent Shenocca is seeking residential custody of the couple’s two children. He objects to his wife’s request to move with them to New York. Sharon Shenocca is also seeking custody and wants her husband to support her and the kids.

“It’s a pretty ugly road they’re going down,” said our source.

A spokesman for the Patriots declined to comment on the matter.

“Generally speaking, I don’t seek comments on inquiries that are personal in nature,” said team spokesguy Stacey James.

Belichick and his wife of 28 years, Debby, separated before the 2004 football season but do spend time together. She was with him at his father’s funeral in November and the two recently appeared together at a fund-raiser for AccesSport, one of Debby’s pet charities. The couple has three children.
