12 Paper Route - hated it.

13 Tropical fish store - liked it, then got bored.

14-15 Record shop 2 doors down from fish store - Loved it, naturally.

16 Junior camp counselor to a bunk of 5 year olds - Loved it. Until the counselor got sick and took 10 days off. Then I became a baby sitter until he returned. Did they get a sub for him? No. Did they raise my pay? No. Heck I don't even think they informed the parents. The rainy days were the worst. How many times can you lead 5 year olds in singing, "McDonalds is my kind of place, hamburgers in your face, french fries between your toes, stuffed pickles up your nose." 14 years later I'm listening to to a Princeton game on WPRB and one of my kids is doing play-by-play :)

18-20 Summer Job between semesters, toll collector on Pa Turnpike - Loved it and hated it, depending on the day. Never had sinus problems until then. I started hocking loogeys all day around that time. And still do. But I started smoking pot that same year. Quit the dope a dozen years later. So who do I blame for ever-persistent loogey, the truck smoke or the pot? No, neither. It's those damn 1%ers like Gasman. They're the ones to blame!

Yep. Put the paper between the doors. No short cuts. And cut lawns and shoveled snow for some of those paper customers too.

Can't even remember how much tip money I made at Christmas (Yea everyone celebrated and acknowledged Christmas). You know why I can't remember how much money I made on tips? 'Cause it all went towards my college fund. Couldn't even spend the damned money I made!

This is funny:

Asked if race relations were worse since he took office, he said, “No, I actually think that it’s probably in its day-to-day interactions less racially divided.”

Thanks.

Race relations are worse now because blacks feel white cops are killing them unjustly at an alarming rate. It has nothing to do with Obama. Those who thought electing a black president would help race relations were silly. A racist doesn't change because the president is black.

the route is not the same for all. The idea that hard work and dedication cures all and will lead to success for everyone is misleading. It's not the only factors.

Do you think that is true? I just can't imagine a cop going out on patrol looking for a black person to kill and then going on with his life thinking he'll get away with it and the guilt won't eat him alive. Not to say there are no bad apples in the average big city police force but to end someone's life unjustly and just go on.....

I started working when I was 13. Would get up at 6am and hitch hike to golf course and caddy all day. If I finished early enough I would hitch hike to my stepdads course and work in his pro shop til closing and go home with him. If you have ever seen the movie Mystic Pizza there is a scene at night when they are at a golf course. That was the Misquamicut Club in Misquamict, RI which is where I used to caddy. When I turned 16, I started working at WT Grant making $1.60/hr.

You might have misread. I'm saying blacks feel that way......that's why race relations have gotten worse over last year......I don't think that no.....but if you listened to black community....they feel different. I may not agree but I understand why they would feel that way.

has a president's words ever carried less worth?

he doesn't care, he just says what he wants you to think, he has no use for the truth

he's destroyed the dignity of the White House

Nah, environment and parents are stopping them as well.

Not everybody had the same path to success......I'm white and realize I have advantages that others don't.

That's life man - some people are born in Guatemala - some grow up in foster homes - that's the way the world works - u still make the most of ur life - I wasnt born with Lebron's athletics or Brad Pitt's looks - I'm not crying - and I'm not jealous - it's still my life to make the most of - or I can do like most liberal and inner city people do and make excuses

Gassy used to shovel dirt, now he gets dirt shoveled on him. He's been down so long, a few mistook him for being dead.

Just about every conservative in this thread was working at a very young age (child labor? outrageous!) and almost everyone I agree with politically had a paper route. As a matter of fact, paper route seems to be the strongest common denominator I can identify.

Really? A Paper route helps kids grow up to be hard working, honest, responsible citizens (conservatives)? :think2:

What are the chances THIS entitled clueless "social justice warrior" had a paper route, babysat, or participated in any other financial endeavor which teaches kids how the REAL WORLD works???

When I was 14 or so, my dad knew a guy who managed a driving range. I worked summers there doing odd job type of stuff, then started working PT during the school year and FT during the summer at a super market when I was 16. Bagging groceries, etc. Even asked a really damn hot 40-yr-old woman who worked in the bakery to my HS prom...she had a smoking hot body and I'm pretty convinced she actually considered it, which would have been f'ing awesome to show up with her in retrospect. But I digress...

My dad was an electrical engineer (VP of his division at work)...and btw, the family had absolutely nothing when they got here, yet my dad, mom, all my aunts and uncles went on to not only be the first in their family to graduate college, but every one of them earned post-grad degrees as well...whether it was an MBA, medical school, whatever. Only in America. Anyhow, dad was making good money...we lived in a 5-BR house with a couple acres. He could have easily afforded a landscaping crew, yet he still made me mow our own yard, rake about a billion fucking leaves every fall, shovel the driveway, etc. He liked helping out, but I was mostly a one-man landscaping crew at an early age. This was shit I did in addition to my own job. It pissed me off at the time since I knew he had plenty of money and I'd wonder why he was making me do all that crap. Now, though...I think I know what he was trying to instill in me at an early age.

Pops is still a total bad ass going at it...very active in his early 70s. When I visited my parents this past summer, he told me to set aside some tine to help him chop firewood in the backyard. Reminded me of Colt McCoy...his family owns a cattle ranch in Texas. Some tiny local newspaper talked to his grandfather after his rookie season and was asked how he thought his grandson played. "Well, not too bad, but if the season is over...we'll be expecting him to be down here within the next few days to help out on the farm." Absolutely love the old school hard ass American mindset...and I hope I have it when I get around to that age.

I had my first afternoon paper route at age 10, and later a morning paper route until I started my McDonald's gig (I always liked having money :))

And it doesn't help matters when the media, who get their marching orders from OBAMA, fuel the fire by covering these cop on black "crimes" 24/7 for weeks. Then you have Obama weighing in on these matters, sending government officials down to the scenes to "investigate". Why are they coming? What is their purpose to attend the funeral of this Michael Brown criminal, and not the other 5,000 blacks that will be murdered or killed this year in Chicago? He is inciting the court of public appeals for whatever reason, probably gun control, and most definitely for he and Michelle's true beliefs (for the first time in my life I am proud to be an American).

He has an agenda and is pushing it through the media. You say "blacks feel this way"...well sure they do.

Now that being said, I am certain their are plenty of examples of police brutality, but there are also many examples of the opposite.

No Sheriff Joe, the difference is all of those people were not told that they had a paper route and weren't making $15 an hour because they are white and it's not their fault they are going to be stuck in a lifetime of poverty and despair.

Yeah, those are the same black people who think it's ok for them to form a mob and then rush into a clothing store or a donut shop and grab whatever they want..... Do you recall the "Wolfpacks" on South Street a few years ago? These kids are all over 18 now. I wonder what they're up to.
