ANALYSIS
A year ago, the Cowboys of Oklahoma State & their 9-3 log were pegged as
participants in the Cotton Bowl to face OleMiss, & were totally embarrassed,
in a 21-7 loss, managing just 9 FDs & turning it over
7 times, including 4 INTs
from their AA QB Robinson. He had thrown for 7,972 yds & 63 TDs in '07, '08,
'09. Likewise a year ago, the Wildcats of Arizona & their 8-4 log were named
as opponents of Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl. Result: a 33-0 shellacking,
while piling up 6 FDs, along with 223-63 RY & 173-46 PY deficits. Thus, we
have a couple of redemption-driven squads meeting here. For the 'Boys, this
marks their 5th straight bowl campaign, & 8th in their last 9 years. They are
always among the most feared offensive squads around, but the loss of 2/3 of
their run, pass, catch triumvirate of Hunter, Robinson & Bryant hardly boded
well this year. But Weeden has thrown for 4,037 yds & 32 TDs, while Hunter
is at 1,516 RYs & 16 TDs, & Blackmon 1,165 receiving yds (16.3 ppc). Thus,
this OkieSt squad leads the nation in total "O", as well as 3rd in scoring, with
its only 2 losses coming in 51-41 & 47-41 affairs. The 'Cats stood at 7-1, &
ranked #13 in the nation, before the roof fell in down the stretch: 4 straight
losses, including 42-17 & 48-29 wipeouts at 11-1 Stanford, & 12-0 Oregon,
the 5th & 2nd ranked teams in the nation. Certaily no disgrace. Check QB
Foles throwing for 1,311 yds & 10 TDs in that 4-game season-ending slide.
For the year, he stands at 2,911 yds, 68%, & 19/7. But that 'Cat running game
has topped 169 RYs vs just 2 lined foes. Containing either team will prove a
difficult task, but just no way that the Wildcats can match the 'Boys' firepower.
