MLB Betting News and Notes - Week #17
•ChiSox Ice Cold Against AL Central Opponents: The Chicago White Sox have been struggling immensely in divisional games recently, going 1-10 in their last 11 against the American League Central. The White Sox will try and turn things around when they host the Kansas City Royals (8:10 PM EST) on Monday evening. BetOnline.com currently lists Chicago as -167 favorites with a total of 7.5.
•Recent History Shows Blue Jays Have Lackey's Number: The Toronto Blue Jays will be happy to see right-hand starter Jon Lackey on the mound when his Boston Red Sox come to town (7:07 PM EST) Monday. In Lackey's last eight assignments against the Blue Jays, the Sox are an awful 1-7. BetOnline.com presently lists Toronto as -113 favorites with an Over/Under of 8.5 for the American League East matchup.
•Under Trending With This Pitcher On The Road: In Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu's last eight outings away from home, the Under is 6-1-1. Ryu and the Dodgers will pay a visit to the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park (7:05 PM EST) on Monday night. The Pirates are currently -108 favorites with a total of 7.5, per BetOnline.com.
•Danny Salazar Will Return To The Major Leagues On Tuesday: MLB.com beat writer Jordan Bastian confirms that the Cleveland Indians will recall right-hander Danny Salazar from Triple-A Columbus to start Tuesday night against the Twins at Minneapolis’ Target Field. Salazar opened the 2014 regular season as a member of Cleveland’s starting rotation but was optioned to the minors after posting a rough 5.53 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over his first eight starts.
Those struggles continued at Triple-A but he’s been much better lately, boasting a 2.32 ERA and 39 strikeouts over his last 31 innings (five starts) for the Clippers. Salazar has excellent raw stuff and could provide a nice boost for the big league rotation down the stretch if he’s able to reign in some of his control issues. The 24-year-old posted a promising 3.12 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 65/15 K/BB ratio across his first 52 major league frames last season for the Tribe.
•Blue Jays, Giants Interested In Utley: The Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants are the teams most interested in acquiring veteran second baseman Chase Utley from the Philadelphia Phillies, according to the Boston Globe. Blue Jays second basemen have combined to hit just .254 this season. They have used Steve Tolleson, Brett Lawrie, Munenori Kawasaki and Ryan Goins, among others, at the position. The Giants have also struggled to get production at second base. Marco Scutaro is back from the disabled list but they are not counting on him to be an everyday player this season.
Utley, 35, is batting .289 with eight home runs and 46 RBIs in 93 games this season. He is making $15 million this season and comes with a $15 million price tag for next year. He also has $15 million vesting options through 2018 if he reaches 500 plate appearances in the year prior. Utley can invoke his trade clause and reject any potential deals. He told MLB.com in late June that he does not expect to be dealt by the July 31 waiver deadline. "I guess we'd have to see at that point," he said. "But I don't plan on going anywhere." The Phillies are in last place in the National League East and are expected to be sellers at the trade deadline.
Who's Not Hot - American League
It gets more and more interesting every week in the American League, as three of the teams that were in the thick of the fight for the playoffs last season, including the defending champs, are at the bottom of the league and the bottom of the money standings as well. Check out who is really burning your bankroll as we near 100 games into the 2014 season.
•Texas Rangers (39-59, -$2,354) – Is it ever going to end for the Rangers? They've only won four games since the middle of June, and it is only a matter of time until they really just blow this whole thing apart. SS Elvis Andrus is one of the many who should probably be traded before the end of the month. OF Shin Soo-Choo has reached base once in his last 22 at bats. The whole lineup is in shambles, and the starting rotation could be made up of just guys who are on the DL. It's really all over for the Rangers, who are 20 games below .500, and we have a feeling that it could end up getting a heck of a lot worse for them before the end of the season.
•Tampa Bay Rays (47-53, -$1,930) – Meanwhile, the Rays have managed to cut a massive dent into their deficit for the season. They'll never get back to the break-even point, but they could get a heck of a lot closer by the end of the year. They're 23-11 in their last 34 games, and they have shaved 7.5 games off of what was once a 15-game deficit in the AFC East. The starting pitching is starting to come back together with RHP Alex Cobb healthy. However, the bullpen still has some problems, as there really isn't a bona fide closer for this team right now. GM Andrew Freidman still has a big decision to make about the future of LHP David Price, but the feeling in Tampa Bay is that the team is still in it and can really win the whole thing.
•Boston Red Sox (46-52, -$1,681) – These Red Sox just don't look nearly as good as the ones who won the World Series last year. 3B Brock Holt, OF Mookie Betts, RHP Rubby De La Rosa... Who are these guys? 2B Dustin Pedroia is having as bad of a season as he has ever had, and it feels like it's wearing off on the whole lineup. The Sox have a number of games this season in which they have been shut out either literally or figuratively, and it just isn't going to get any better than this in all likelihood. The question is whether men like RHP Jake Peavy can really get going again. When LHP Jon Lester is on the mound, these Red Sox are able to be backed. When he isn't out there though, there are all sorts of questions, and it feels like Russian Roulette backing the boys from Beantown.
