CAROLINA -½ -110 over Calgary

Regulation only. How do you get shut out five times in eight games? The Flames scored four times in Colorado on 19 shots on goal on January 6. Take out that poor performance by J.S. Giguere and Calgary has scored two goals in seven other games. In fact, Calgary has scored one goal or fewer in seven of their past eight games and they have one goal in their past three games. In all the years of watching this sport, we’ve never witnessed a team with such a lack of production or scoring chances. In 45 games, Calgary has two players that have 20 points or more.

4The Hurricanes will lose this game if they don’t show up it’s hard to envision that when victories in this league are not easy to come by. Carolina is right in the thick of the log-jam in the East for the final three or four playoff spots and a win here moves them up three spots in the standings. Should Carolina win they would leapfrog over both New Jersey and Ottawa and tie the Maple Leafs for ninth place in the East, just a point behind both Detroit and Philadelphia. This is actually a crucial game for the ‘Canes because a loss would be devastating. The Hurricanes are playing their best hockey of the season with five wins in six games and losing to this reeling visitor is not an option.

COLUMBUS -½ +141 over Tampa Bay

Regulation only. What a great spot for the Jackets. Tampa Bay will play this game with a depleted lineup and minus their #1 goaltender Ben Bishop. That leaves one of the worst goaltenders in the NHL, Anders Lindback to try and stave off one of the hottest teams in the game. Lindback is a Predators castoff that is sporting a brutal save percentage of .881 in 15 games. That is the worst mark in the NHL for any goaltender that has made 10 appearances or more. Additionally, the Bolts will play their seventh straight game in which they’ve had to travel. On January 1, Tampa embarked on a four game trip through Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg. They returned home for one game against Washington before flying to Philadelphia the next day. That’s equivalent to a seven-game road trip.

Columbus is coming on big time. They’ve won four of five with only loss over that span occurring against the Blue Notes. The Jackets have scored 13 goals over their past three games while surrendering just six. The Blue Jackets have won five of their past six games against the East and the home side in this series has won seven of the past eight. This is a strong situational play for the Jackets against weak goaltending and it’s also worth noting that the Bolts have a much bigger game up next tomorrow at Madison Square Gardens.

BOSTON COLLEGE +8½ -106 over Syracuse

In the first “Big Saturday” of the season, the Orangemen whacked the Tar Heels in impressive fashion with all eyes on them for that early start. The Carrier Dome was packed to the rafters, as Syracuse extended its unbeaten streak to 16 games. The Orange are on a major roll. However, Syracuse’s stock is soaring and with that comes an inflated number. It’s also a huge letdown spot for the Orange, playing the 5-11 Eagles after dismantling the perennial powerhouse Tar Heels.

Boston College is way at the bottom of the ACC standings, making them the most undervalued team in the conference. The Eagles stock has sunk after losing seven of their past nine games, including four straight before defeated Virginia Tech on Saturday. One win does wonders for a team’s psyche and that win followed a good performance against Clemson in which the Eagles lost by just two points. The Eagles are better than this. With the most returning experience in the ACC and with the seventh-ranked, non-conference strength of schedule in the country, Boston College figures to be well-prepped for this huge game. There’s more good news for the Eagles as well. 7-foot-1, 250-pound center, Dennis Clifford returned against Clemson and this will be his third game back. It’s no coincidence that the Eagles have been much better with Clifford in the lineup because he impacts the game in every way with his rebounding, shot blocking, scoring and shot altering. Statistically, Syracuse is a middle of the pack college basketball team, meaning its sum is better than its parts. The Eagles have a chance to win this game and in this buy-low, sell-high scenario, the points come with plenty of value.

#715 4* Virginia +5.5 (7:00 est) ESPN

Virginia has been playing very well this season and they have opened up ACC play very strong at 3-0 ATS. The Cavaliers have not beaten Duke at Duke in a long time but they have covered 6 of their last 12 trips there and with their confidence sky high look for a strong effort from them here. Duke has not been all that great to open up ACC play at only 1-2 ATS. Look for them to struggle to cover this number against Virginia. Thank you and good luck.

#707 San Antonio Spurs -5.5 (8:00 est)<p>

The Spurs are awesome on the road as they have been for quite a while. They are also 10-5 ATS against losing teams while New Orleans is only 4-12 ATS against winning teams. New Orleans has lost 5 in a row SU and they have only covered 1 of their last 7 games. The Spurs are going up and the Pelicans are going down. Take the Spurs here laying this low number as the play of the day.

The Suns invade Gotham looking to close their 5-game roady out on a high, but this will be the team’s fifth game played in seven days and I just don’t see them having enough in the tank to hang with a reenergized Knicks outfit looking to build upon its current 4-game winning streak. Making matters worse for the visitor’s in this spot is the fact that NY is currently locked in defensively having conceded an average of just 87.5 PPG in its L/4, and will be looking to tally its third straight win at home before venturing out on a mini 2-game road trip of their own to Charlotte and Indiana. The loss of Eric Bledsoe continues to hamper Coach Hornacek’s rotations, and the limited manpower has seen Phoenix wilt late in two of the previous four games played on this trip. NY is on a 6-game cover streak and has covered each of its L/4 on a day’s rest. Look for them to hold serve here and win their third straight in the recent rivalry with the regressing Suns.
