Missouri DT Beckner lost for season

Missouri freshman defensive tackle Terry Beckner Jr. will miss the rest of the season after tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee.

Beckner also suffered meniscus cartilage damage and a bone bruise in last Saturday's game against Brigham Young. He is expected to undergo surgery in early December.

The extent of the damage was discovered during an MRI exam, according to the school. Trainer Rex Sharp believes Beckner will be ready for fall camp in August.

Beckner was hurt on Missouri's final snap of the BYU game and was carted off the field.

Beckner was one of the top recruits in the nation last year. He started five games and recorded three sacks.

Utah RB Booker out for regular season

Utah senior running back Devontae Booker will miss at least the rest of the regular season after undergoing surgery to repair torn meniscus cartilage in his left knee, according to published reports.

Booker suffered the injury during last Saturday's double-overtime loss to Arizona. He is expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks and that timetable could cause him to miss Utah's bowl game as well.

Booker has rushed for 1,261 yards and 11 touchdowns and has carried the Utah offense. He is averaging 26.8 carries per game and also ranks second on the team with 37 receptions.

Utah is in the mix for a spot in the Pac-12 title game and has a key contest with UCLA this Saturday. Junior Joe Williams is the likely starter in Booker's absence.

Booker tied a school record with his 14th career 100-yard rushing game last Saturday. Despite being in only his season at the school, he ranks third in school history with 2,773 rushing yards.

Ole Miss LB Nkemdiche hospitalized

Mississippi senior linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche remains in a hospital for undisclosed reasons will miss Saturday's game against LSU, his family and coach Hugh Freeze jointly announced via statement on Thursday.

Nkemdiche reportedly has been hospitalized since Monday. Neither the family nor school has provided details over what led to the action but said his condition isn't life-threatening.

Baylor QB Stidham questionable with back injury

Baylor quarterback Jarrett Stidham could miss Saturday's showdown at Oklahoma State because of a back injury.

Coach Art Briles said Stidham was not progressing in his recovery after being hurt last week. His status is up in the air in a game that could determine the postseason fate of the Bears.

"He's not as far along as what I'd like for him to be," Briles said Wednesday. "We'll see in the next day or two."

Stidham replaced Seth Russell following the Iowa State game following a season-ending injury to Baylor's starter. Stidham has played in all nine games with 1,007 yards, 11 touchdowns and two interceptions.

Baylor lists sophomore Chris Johnson as the backup quarterback.

Game of the Day: Michigan State at Ohio State

Connor Cook and the Spartans opened as 13-point road underdogs for their visit to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Michigan State Spartans at Ohio State Buckeyes (-13.5, 53)

The throwing shoulder of Michigan State senior quarterback Connor Cook promises to be a crucial element when the No. 9 Spartans visit No. 3 Ohio State in a Big Ten showdown on Saturday. Cook, who possesses a 32-4 record as a starter, injured his right shoulder in last Saturday's victory over Maryland and was pulled from the contest because he didn't have the arm strength to continue.

It's clear that Cook will attempt to play but unclear how proficient he will be against the sturdy Buckeyes' defense. "My shoulder is good," Cook said at a press conference. "I'm going to be ready to go so there is no issue with that." Ohio State has won 23 consecutive overall games and a record 30 consecutive conference games and sophomore quarterback J.T. Barrett is back in control as the starter. Barrett passed for 300 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 86 yards and two scores in last season's 49-37 win over the Spartans.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC.

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Buckeyes as 13-point home faves and the total opened at 52.5.

INJURY REPORT:

Spartans - QB Connor Cook (Probable, shoulder), DL Joel Heath (Questionable, leg), DB Jalen Watts-Jackson (Out for season, hip), S R.J. Williamson (Late Nov., bicep), OL Dennis Finley (Out for season, leg), CB Vayante Copeland (Out for season, back), LB Ed Davis (Out for season, knee).

Buckeyes - CB Marshon Lattimore (Probable, hamstring), LB Chris Worley (Questionable, undisclosed), WR Johnnie Dixon (Out indefinitely, knee), S Erick Smith (Out for season, knee), DB Cam Burrows (Out for season, foot), LB Nick Conner (Out for season, knee), WR Corey Smith (Out for season, leg), WR Noah Brown (Out for season, leg).

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid-40s with an 84 percent chance of showers. Wind will blow toward the north endzone at around 13 miles per hour.

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "The Spartans will face the No. 2 ranked Buckeyes in Columbus this week, and an upset could put them right back in the playoff picture. Critics will say that the Buckeyes haven't played anybody, but with their next two games at home to Michigan State and on the road at Michigan, they have a chance to silence the doubters."

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (9-1 SU, 3-7 ATS, 5-5 O/U): Cook has passed for 2,482 yards, 21 touchdowns and just four interceptions and junior Tyler O'Connor (6-of-11 for 44 yards, one touchdown, one interception versus Maryland) is the backup. Senior wideout Aaron Burbridge is having a huge season with Big Ten-leading totals of 65 receptions and 1,021 receiving yards and he is just the seventh player in school history to reach 1,000 yards in a season. Senior defensive end Shilique Calhoun (25 career sacks, including a team-best 8.5 this season) and sophomore nose tackle Malik McDowell (10.5 tackles for losses) are stalwarts of a tough defensive line, while junior middle linebacker Riley Bullough (team-best 79 tackles) and sophomore safety Montae Nicholson (team-high three interceptions) are also key players.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (10-0 SU, 4-6 ATS, 2-8 O/U): Junior running back Ezekiel Elliott has compiled 15 consecutive 100-yard outings while etching his name among the school's best-ever backs. Elliott has rushed for 1,425 yards and 16 touchdowns this season and ranks third in school history with 3,565 yards -- he needs 204 to pass former Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George for second on Ohio State's all-time list. Junior defensive end Joey Bosa has a team-high 15 tackles for losses -- he has 49 in his career -- but has just four sacks while sophomore middle linebacker Raekwon McMillian has a team-best 97 tackles and sophomore defensive end Tyquan Lewis has a team-high 6.5 sacks.

TRENDS:

* Road team is 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings.
* Underdog is 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings.
* Over is 5-1 in Spartans last six road games.
* Under is 4-0 in Buckeyes last four conference games.

CONSENSUS: Seventy-two percent are backing the Spartans.

Preview: Ducks (6-9) at Lightning (9-9)

Date: November 21, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

After knocking off the team it beat to reach the Stanley Cup Final a season ago, the Tampa Bay Lightning know they will have their hands full with another opponent that nearly played for the Cup.

The Lightning seek consecutive victories for the first time since a 3-0-0 start when they host the improving Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night.

Tampa Bay (9-9-3) ended the New York Rangers' nine-game win streak with a 2-1 victory Thursday. That marked those teams' first matchup since the Lightning won in seven games in last season's Eastern Conference finals.

The result was a welcome one for Tampa Bay, which was 3-7-1 in its previous 11 games. Now the Lightning face a Ducks club that fell one game shy of facing them in the summer.

"We can't hang our hat and say, 'We just beat the Rangers,'" coach Jon Cooper said. "Now we've got a team that was one game away, just as the Rangers were, from the Stanley Cup finals last year."

Anaheim (7-9-4) is enjoying a 6-2-2 surge after winning 3-1 at Florida on Thursday. The Ducks' special teams enjoyed a big night with Cam Fowler scoring on the power play and Andrew Cogliano adding a short-handed tally.

Coach Bruce Boudreau's club enjoyed a 41-25 edge in shots to improve to 2-1-0 on this trip. The Ducks held a 40-21 advantage in shots in Tuesday's 3-2 defeat to Nashville.

"The last two games have been really encouraging in terms of the way we played," Boudreau said. "We didn't get the results in Nashville, but to go on the road and put 40 shots on both of those teams was quite impressive."

Frederik Andersen made 24 saves one game after he was pulled for yielding three goals on 10 shots versus the Predators.

'It's important. He's our No. 1 guy and we've got to make sure that he plays,' Boudreau said. 'We wanted Freddy right back in there and he rewarded us.'

Andersen's counterpart figures to be Ben Bishop, who is 3-0-1 with a 1.47 goals-against average in four career starts against the Ducks. Bishop beat Anaheim twice last season, with Andersen losing once.

Tampa Bay's power play is in the bottom half of the league at 17.2 percent and will be challenged by an Anaheim penalty kill that is a league-best 90.3.

Steven Stamkos had a goal and two assists in the 2014-15 season series, and has nine points in six career matchups.

Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov each had 29 goals a season ago and have combined for eight this season. Johnson's three goals have come in the last seven games while Kucherov is goalless in six straight.

Tampa Bay is averaging 2.3 goals for one of the league's lowest marks.

"I think it just comes down when we get around the net, we have to bear down in putting the puck in," Cooper said.

Ducks star Ryan Getzlaf has just one goal while linemate Corey Perry has scored once in 10 road games. Jakob Silfverberg scored his first goal Thursday into an empty net.

Preview: Sharks (10-8) at Penguins (11-7)

Date: November 21, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Sharks' travel itinerary says they'll be flying back to San Jose at the end of the weekend, their longest road trip of the season behind them.

Based on their first four results, they might want to extend their stay.

The Sharks look to win a fifth straight to open this six-game trip Saturday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins, whose stars have paved the way to back-to-back victories following a players-only meeting.

San Jose (11-8-0) lost three of four at home before hitting the road, going 0 for 12 on the power play after coming up empty in nine man-advantage opportunities over its first four games at the SAP Center.

The Sharks got power-play goals from Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau that made the difference in a 5-4 win at Boston on Tuesday, then delivered nearly 65 minutes of sterling defense two nights later. Melker Karlsson scored with 1:15 left in overtime to give San Jose a 1-0 win as Martin Jones made 34 saves to earn his third shutout.

'Over 82 games you have to win all kinds of different ways,' coach Peter DeBoer said. 'Tonight was a goalie win for us. You have to get timely contributions at different points from everybody. (Jones) was our best guy tonight.'

Karlsson made his season debut Nov. 10 at home, but he's helped carry the Sharks on the trip with three goals and an assist. All four San Jose victories have come by one goal.

'We needed a good road trip,' DeBoer said. 'We talked about that, taking it one game at a time and trying to squeeze out wins. We weren't in a great spot after our homestand. To our guys' credit, it was a little bit of a gut check and we're finding a way here.'

So are the Penguins (12-7-0), who appeared to be in disarray after a 4-0 loss to New Jersey on Saturday that was the team's third defeat in four games.

But Evgeni Malkin was outspoken in a closed-door meeting that cleared the air, and he backed up his concern with two goals and two assists in Tuesday's 4-3 win over Minnesota, then scored again while Sidney Crosby got his first even-strength goal of the season - the game winner in the third period - in a 4-3 victory over Colorado on Thursday.

"You can get all the chances you want and you can do good things out there, but you have to produce,' Crosby said. 'You look at the game, and if I don't take advantage of that chance, I'm probably sitting here wondering what could have been.'

The Penguins have won nine of their last 10 games decided by one goal.

Sixty-five minutes were not enough to decide either of last season's meetings. Crosby scored in the Bay Area on March 9 but the Sharks won 2-1 after an eight-round shootout, then Crosby and David Perron scored in the tiebreaker as Pittsburgh came away with a 3-2 victory 20 days later.

Six of the last 10 meetings in this series have gone past regulation, with five being decided in a shootout.

The Penguins have allowed a power-play goal in six straight games after going their previous six without allowing any. They're 9-1 this season when they keep opponents off the scoreboard during the man advantage.

A win Saturday would send the Sharks into the Sunday finale of their trip in Columbus with six straight road wins for the first time since a nine-game run in the 2009-10 season.

Preview: Avalanche (7-11) at Capitals (11-5)

Date: November 21, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Every loss for the Washington Capitals has been followed with a win.

They'll have another opportunity to continue that trend Saturday night when they host the Colorado Avalanche and red-hot Matt Duchene.

Almost lost in the celebration of Alex Ovechkin scoring the 484th goal of his career Thursday to break Sergei Fedorov's record for most by a Russian-born player, was a 3-2 loss to visiting Dallas.

Ovechkin, who had gone four games without a point, scored the tying goal 7:01 into the third period before Jason Spezza converted Jason Chimera's turnover into the game-winner just over four minutes later.

'I think he wishes that we won the game, but obviously it's a huge accomplishment,' said Nicklas Backstrom, who assisted on Ovechkin's milestone goal and also added his seventh. 'I'm really happy for him.'

Washington (12-5-1) allowed the first goal for the ninth straight game but outshot an opponent for the eighth consecutive time.

"Overall, I thought we deserved better; at least one point, I think," Backstrom told the team's official website. "But at the same time, that's what happens in hockey. You've just got to find a way to win these games, but we'll have a new game on Saturday so we've just got to look forward to that."

A loss for the Capitals seems to bring out their best the following game. In the contest after their five previous losses, they've outscored the opposition 17-6 and gone 5 for 17 on the power play.

Braden Holtby figures to be back in net after Philipp Grubauer got the nod Thursday. Holtby is 4-1-0 with a 1.39 goals-against average in his past five starts and has surrendered two goals or fewer in six straight home appearances. He stopped 31 shots in his only game against Colorado, a 2-1 victory Jan. 12.

A matchup with the Avalanche (7-11-1) hasn't been easy for goaltenders lately, with Duchene their biggest problem.

Colorado opened its seven-game, 15-day road trip by scoring 13 goals in wins over Philadelphia, Boston and Montreal before totaling four in losses to Toronto and Pittsburgh.

Duchene scored his second goal of the game with 83 seconds remaining, but the Avalanche were unable to get the equalizer in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Penguins.

'It was a hard-fought game, but at the same time we have to find ways to win those hockey games,' coach Patrick Roy said. 'That's what we should be concerned about.'

Duchene has six goals and five assists during a five-game streak and 15 points in nine games this month. The line of Duchene, Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog has combined for 18 points in the last five games.

Roy said he has no plans to break up his top line in an attempt to spread out the scoring.

"That line is playing good hockey for us, and they're going to stay like this," he told the team's official website. "The other lines, it's their job to find ways to compete. I'm not going to spread out the lineup, no way."

The Capitals have won two straight against the Avalanche following a four-game losing streak in the series. Ovechkin has scored in both of those wins after he was held without a goal in the previous seven meetings.

Preview: Flyers (5-8) at Senators (6-5)

Date: November 21, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Senators finally had the kind of game they wanted at home. The Philadelphia Flyers hope their home form won't carry into Ottawa for Saturday night's game.

Erik Karlsson had two goals and an assist and Craig Anderson made 25 saves for his 30th career shutout as Ottawa (9-5-5) beat Columbus 3-0 on Thursday, recording its second regulation win in 11 home games. It was the Senators' first shutout of the season and first time they held an opponent under two goals at home.

"We did what we had to do to win the game," said Karlsson, who has nine points in a five-game point streak. "We got a few lucky bounces and that's what you need sometimes and I think everybody contributed and I think it started with the third and fourth lines."

Karlsson, a two-time Norris Trophy winner, has scored all five of his goals in the last five games after failing to net any in his first 14. He leads the team with 16 assists and 21 points.

He hasn't fared well against Philadelphia, failing to register a point in last season's three meetings and not scoring a goal in the previous eight. Karlsson has two goals and nine assists in 17 career games versus the Flyers.

Anderson, meanwhile, will start again after his defense that allows a league-high 34.2 shots per game limited Columbus to 25 - matching an opponent's season low.

"Any time you know you're giving up six, eight shots a period you know you're playing the right way," Anderson said. You know you're playing hard, you know you're playing well and that's a credit to the 18 skaters in front of me."

The netminder lost his only game against the Flyers last season, turning aside 33 shots before losing 2-1 in a five-round shootout, but is 5-2-2 in 10 appearances versus Philadelphia playing for Ottawa.

Anderson now faces a Flyers team which is scoring a league-worst 1.79 goals per game, including only eight during a six-game home losing streak. However, Philadelphia has scored three in each of its last two road games and won both.

The Flyers (6-8-5) have gotten a point in three straight games overall but have dropped their last two after a 1-0 overtime defeat to San Jose on Thursday.

Coach Dave Hakstol took solace in the team's attacking play - Philadelphia outshot the Sharks 28-11 after the first period - and a penalty kill that was successful four times in as many chances.

"I think we put together another pretty complete performance out there again," he said. "We were the better team I thought for the last 40, 44 minutes of this hockey game. I thought we were a little bit quicker and did things pretty well during that time frame, so I'm going to take that and keep building."

Philadelphia's power play, however, continues to be a sore spot, converting 14.3 percent of its chances to rank near the bottom of the league. The Flyers' eight goals with the man advantage are tied for the NHL low.

"We have to find a way to be better," forward Jakub Voracek told the league's official website. "If we would know then we would work on it. I can't tell you why we're not scoring goals. If we knew, we'd do something different.

Voracek has failed to build on his career-best 81-point campaign last season, totaling one goal and eight assists through 19 games.

The Senators got a point in all three games last season as the teams traded shootout victories before Ottawa won 3-1 on April 11 as Mark Stone had two goals.

Preview: Rangers (13-3) at Panthers (7-8)

Date: November 21, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

After falling just short of the franchise record for consecutive wins this week, the New York Rangers turn their attention to another streak.

The Rangers hope to rebound from their first loss in nearly four weeks Saturday night when they visit the Florida Panthers, a team they haven't lost to in more than 2 1/2 years.

New York (14-3-2) is 6-0-0 against Florida over the last two seasons, including three wins at BB&T Center. The Rangers are 10-2-0 in the last 12 in this series, owning a 45-23 advantage on the scoreboard.

New York can match its longest current winning streak against any opponent with another victory over the Panthers, tying seven-game spurts versus Buffalo and Carolina.

Another win would also help the Rangers regroup from Thursday's 2-1 loss at Tampa Bay, which cut short their bid at matching the franchise record of 10 consecutive victories accomplished in 1939-40 and 1972-73.

A power-play blunder led to Valtteri Filppula's short-handed goal with 1:05 left in the third period. Both Lightning goals came off New York turnovers.

'It doesn't matter how many games you win, when you play you want to win every game,' goaltender Henrik Lundqvist said. 'This one, the way we lose, it's extremely frustrating.'

Goaltending and goal-scoring made New York dynamic during its streak, but the Rangers struggled to find opportunities against the Lightning - failing to score more than one goal for the first time since they totaled two during an Oct. 13-18 three-game losing streak.

Mats Zuccarello, Derick Brassard and Rick Nash were each plus-5 in the previous four games on the Rangers' first line, but they failed to make an impact against the Lightning to finish at minus-1. Zuccarello has five goals and six assists in 11 career games against the Panthers, while Brassard has six goals and two assists in 12 and Nash six goals and seven assists in 17.

Florida goalie Roberto Luongo has been sharp in his last two outings, blanking Tampa Bay with 39 saves in a 1-0 win on Monday and stopping 38 of 40 shots in a 3-1 loss against Anaheim on Thursday.

Luongo has lost three straight against the Rangers, though, with a 5.16 goals against average and .818 save percentage. His 2.93 GAA in 23 career appearances against New York is his second worst behind only a 3.01 versus the Ducks.

Despite Luongo's solid play in net, the Panthers (8-8-3) split the first two of a five-game homestand. After scoring 11 goals in their previous three games, the Panthers have struggled in their last two - returning to the offensive form that produced seven goals during an 0-3-2 slump from Oct. 30-Nov. 7.

'(Luongo) kept us in the game as long as he could,' coach Gerard Gallant said. 'It's about putting pucks to net and we refused to do that. We were passing up shots to make fancy passes and they never work.'

Florida is 5-4-1 at BB&T Center, while the Rangers are 5-2-1 away from home.

Lundqvist holds a 1.81 career GAA and .937 save percentage against the Panthers, winning his last five starts.

Preview: Maple Leafs (5-9) at Bruins (9-8)

Date: November 21, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The good news for the Boston Bruins over the last two weeks is that they haven't let any loss linger.

Not being able to build on a victory is what's bothering them.

Boston looks to win back-to-back games for the first time this month when it hosts a Toronto Maple Leafs team that appears to be coming together under coach Mike Babcock.

The Bruins (9-8-1) followed a 6-0-1 stretch with three straight defeats and have alternated wins and losses over their last five. This contest marks the end of a five-game homestand they hoped would produce more positive results.

Boston hasn't won consecutive games since a four-game streak that ended Oct. 31, but it has a chance to do so by beating Toronto (7-9-4) after picking up a 4-2 win over Minnesota on Thursday.

Loui Eriksson recorded his third career hat trick and first since 2009 to give him a team-high nine goals. Patrice Bergeron had an assist, giving him four with three goals during a six-game point streak.

"For us as a group, we've been able to respond, obviously, after losses," defenseman Torey Krug told the team's official website after Friday's practice. "Then after wins, for whatever reason, we kind of have an emotional letdown and all of a sudden, teams come into our rink and they take two points from us.

"The question becomes, how do we respond to that? We have a group that's paying attention to that, and we'll take it from there."

The Bruins also are aware of how well the Maple Leafs have been playing. Since winning only twice in its first 14 games, Toronto is 5-0-1 after coming back to beat Carolina 2-1 in a shootout Friday.

Still, the Leafs are tied with Buffalo for last in the Atlantic Division.

"We're definitely not taking them lightly," Bruins forward Brett Connolly said. "They've got a good team. It's going to be a good energy in the building, so you can't take them lightly. I don't think anybody here is taking them lightly.

"They're only a few points behind us, so it's going to be a hard game. They're going to come hard, and they've been playing some good hockey as of late, so we've got to be ready to go."

Five of the Leafs' six goals over their last two have come on the power play, as Nazem Kadri tied it Friday with 3:33 left in the third on the man advantage. James Reimer made 33 saves and stopped four of five in the shootout.

'It's not going to be pretty every night, especially on the road,' Babcock said. 'I think you've got to stick with it, find ways to in and be resilient and get it done.'

Reimer has won five straight starts while posting a .960 save percentage. It's unclear if he or the winless Jonathan Bernier will get the nod in this contest, but Reimer stopped 49 shots in a 2-1 shootout loss the last time he faced Boston on April 4.

Tuukka Rask, who has a 2.06 goals-against average in 22 starts including the playoffs against Toronto, could be in net for Boston. Rask, though, has allowed at least five goals five times in 13 starts, including his last outing when the Bruins lost 5-4 to San Jose on Tuesday.

Preview: Coyotes (10-8) at Jets (9-9)

Date: November 21, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Never in the NHL history of the Arizona Coyotes franchise has the club opened a season with four straight victories in Canadian cities.

The Coyotes can change that by halting their struggles in the place it all began Saturday night against the Winnipeg Jets.

After opening a four-game trip with consecutive 5-2 losses to Columbus and the New York Islanders, Arizona (10-8-1) won 3-2 at Montreal on Thursday. The Coyotes, who have recorded all but three of their victories away from home, have also won at Ottawa and Toronto.

The Coyotes franchise, which made its NHL debut in Winnipeg for the 1979-80 season, also won its first three in Canada in 1981 before falling at Vancouver. If the Coyotes are to make team history this weekend, they must snap a four-game skid at Winnipeg to these Jets (9-9-2).

Arizona has come close while losing in a shootout in the last two visits, and has some momentum following a strong effort against the Canadiens.

'I was hoping we'd play well,' coach Dave Tippett said. 'We haven't played well for a couple of games and I was hoping we'd come in and have a really solid effort and we did.

"I liked our speed. We played the game fast. That's the team we're trying to become.'

Shane Doan scored his fifth, Mike Smith made 31 saves and the Coyotes killed all five penalties after their previous two opponents went 3 for 8 with the man advantage.

Doan had a goal and five assists in three games last season against Winnipeg, the city where his career began in 1995-96.

'It's a place you never forget,' he said.

The Jets franchise, which has won six of seven overall against Arizona and earned at least one point in the last seven home matchups dating to when it played in Atlanta, snapped a six-game skid with Wednesday's 4-1 victory over Vancouver.

"There's ebbs and flows to a hockey season," forward Drew Stafford told the NHL's official website. "If you stick with it long enough, sooner or later you'll get a break and things will swing."

Looking for a spark after Winnipeg scored 10 goals and was shut out twice in the previous six contests, coach Paul Maurice paired Stafford with Mark Scheifele and Mathieu Perreault. It paid off as Scheifele and Stafford each had two goals with an assist and Perreault recorded three assists.

'It's always awesome playing with Matty and, obviously, me and Staff have played a lot together, too,' said Scheifele, who snapped a six-game point drought. 'We were moving the puck well, we were on the forecheck hard.

'Obviously, it's the first game. We still can do better, and hopefully we can build off that.'

Winnipeg scored its first power-play goal in four games Wednesday, but is 4 for 40 in the last 14.

Though opponents have converted 31.6 percent (6 of 19) of their chances with the man advantage over the last four games, the Jets displayed some solid defense Wednesday after yielding an average of 4.3 goals during the slide.

Ondrej Pavelec made 29 saves after allowing four goals in each of his previous three games. He's 4-0-0 with a 1.44 goals-against average against the Coyotes in Winnipeg.

Arizona defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson has three goals and three assists during a career-high seven-game point streak. He has four goals with an assist in his last six against Winnipeg.

Preview: Sabres (7-9) at Stars (16-4)

Date: November 21, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The Dallas Stars are off to their best start in club history behind the NHL's highest-scoring offense.

They'll try to match their longest winning streak of the season Saturday night by knocking off the Buffalo Sabres for the second time in five days.

Dallas (16-4-0) owns the league's best record and seeking its fifth straight victory. The Stars are averaging 3.6 goals, the franchise's most since the 1986-87 Minnesota North Stars scored 3.7 per contest. It's also the NHL's highest average since Washington averaged 3.8 in 2009-10.

They've scored at least three goals in all but four games.

"The start has been really good," coach Lindy Ruff told the team's official website. "There have been a few games that have been tighter. We've gotten down, but we've been able to battle back. We have a few things going."

The Stars have also had some good fortune on their side, coming out a league-best 5-1-0 in one-goal games following Thursday's 3-2 win at Washington. Jason Spezza scored the winner at the 11:10 mark of the third period, the third straight contest in which he's found the back of the net after a 10-game drought.

"We've been in many of these this season, and we believe we can get it done," said goaltender Kari Lehtonen, who improved to 9-1-0. "We didn't panic when they tied it. That's nice."

They won 3-1 in Buffalo on Tuesday behind Alex Goligoski's two assists for their fourth victory in five meetings. The Sabres appeared to tie the game with 6:15 left on a goal by Sam Reinhart, but the goal was disallowed after video review confirmed Ruff's challenge that Tyler Ennis was offside on the play.

"Offside has been around a long time, so I've got to get to know that rule a little better," Ennis told the league's official website.

That was the second of a season-high three straight losses for the visiting Sabres (8-9-2), all of which have come in close fashion. They lost 2-1 in overtime to San Jose last Saturday and 3-2 in a shootout Thursday at St. Louis.

Buffalo failed to score on any of its four power plays and surrendered two power-play goals on three chances for the Blues.

"We were plus-two on the 5-on-5 tonight," coach Dan Bylsma said. "I thought the special teams pretty much dictated the whole game right from the beginning with the major penalty that we took."

The Sabres have struggled on the penalty kill, giving up 13 goals on 48 opportunities, including five in 15 chances spanning the last five games. Dallas has scored seven times on 20 chances with the man advantage over its last eight games.

On Tuesday, though, the Stars didn't capitalize on their lone opportunity, while Buffalo's goal was by Ryan O'Reilly on a power play. O'Reilly has scored in three straight games after tallying four goals in his first 16 contests. His seven lead the team.

Tyler Seguin will look to extend his point streak against the Sabres to six games after recording three goals and three assists in the last five meetings.

Buffalo is 4-3-1 on the road and had won four of five prior to Thursday's loss.

Preview: Predators (9-4) at Wild (10-5)

Date: November 21, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

Recent home games against the Nashville Predators have brought little luck to the Minnesota Wild.

Forget about the four straight losses; the most recent cost the Wild their best player, and his absence has been felt since.

With Zach Parise still on the mend from injury and the Wild limping off a four-game road trip, they will try to end their struggles against the Predators at Xcel Energy Center on Saturday night.

The Wild seemed fine directly after Parise sprained his MCL following a hit from behind by James Neal early in a 3-2 home loss to Nashville on Nov. 5, Minnesota's only defeat at home this season. Minnesota (10-5-3) won its next three games, including the opener of a four-game trip, and Parise's injury was deemed less serious than originally feared.

The wheels fell off quickly, though, as the Wild lost at Dallas, Pittsburgh and Boston to close the trip.

Still tied with Thomas Vanek for the team lead in goals with seven, Parise won't return against the Predators but may be able to play on Wednesday versus Vancouver - the second of a four-game homestand.

The Wild are also dealing with an illness that has spread in the locker room, while forward Jason Zucker was slashed on the leg toward the end of a 4-2 loss against the Bruins on Thursday.

Coach Mike Yeo said Zucker and ill defenseman Jonas Brodin should play against the Predators.

"We just have to focus on the guys that are here really, and trying to get back the guys that are sick to make sure they are back as quick as possible," forward Nino Niederreiter said.

The Wild will try to pick up the pieces against Nashville. The good news is Minnesota has won three of four against the Predators, but those victories came away from home.

The Wild, who are 7-1-0 at Xcel Energy Center, have surrendered four goals in back-to-back games for the first time this season and have allowed power-play tallies in five straight. A quick start would help after Minnesota conceded the first goal in each of its last four games.

"The longer road trips wear on you, the intensity of the games, but we've been trailing in every one of those games," Yeo said. "When you're trailing, you're pressing, it seems you grind a lot more... we have to dig deep and give everything we've got to be able to put it into that game (Saturday)."

In order to set their longest current winning streak in an opposing arena, the Predators (11-4-3) will have to rebound from Friday's 4-0 loss at Columbus that opened a five-game road trip.

Nashville outshout the Blue Jackets 39-18, but Pekka Rinne allowed three goals on 17 shots. That was as many goals as Rinne had surrendered while facing 83 shots in his previous three starts.

Columbus beat Rinne on its first two shots 1:41 apart and scored three times on its first nine.

'We made a couple of big mistakes,' coach Peter Laviolette said. 'We were in the positions that we needed to be in and then we didn't follow through on assignments. It ended up costing us a couple goals.'

Rinne has allowed just three goals on 66 shots in his last two starts in Minnesota.

Preview: Red Wings (10-8) at Blues (12-6)

Date: November 21, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

Jake Allen has given St. Louis plenty of solid performances in net this season, but few have been as impressive as his last that helped the Blues snap out of their funk.

St. Louis now looks to take both games on its brief homestand when it hosts the Detroit Red Wings.

Allen has a 1.91 goals-against average and three shutouts in 13 starts and one relief appearance after making 32 saves in Thursday's 3-2 shootout win over Buffalo. After helping the Blues (13-6-1) snuff out a pair of 5-on-3 chances for the Sabres, he stopped all three attempts in the shootout.

"Your best penalty killer is your goalie and again he made some big saves," said Alexander Steen, who scored the only goal in the shootout.

St. Louis had dropped three of its previous four before getting power-play goals from Kevin Shattenkirk and Vladimir Tarasenko. It also has killed off all 13 penalties over its last three.

'It was special teams and goaltender that won the game for us,' coach Ken Hitchcock said. 'Penalty killing was outstanding. Power play, we scored early in the 5-minute power play ... and then had a great power-play goal in the second period. The guys that killed penalties, especially those guys that were out there on the 5-on-3, did an outstanding job.'

The Blues improved to 6-2-1 at Scottrade Center and look to win a third straight there before heading on the road to face Buffalo and Pittsburgh.

This will be the only one on the road during a nine-game stretch for the Red Wings (10-8-2), who beat Los Angeles 3-2 on Friday.

Rookie Dylan Larkin scored for the third consecutive contest, but he briefly went to the locker room in the third period after his knee buckled during a non-contact play. He returned, much to the delight of coach Jeff Blashill.

Larkin has seven goals and seven assists, ranking second behind Henrik Zetterberg for the team lead in points.

'I didn't get a good look at what he did, but I know he had some kind of lower-body issue,' Blashill said. 'I haven't talked to him, but he finished the game, so I don't expect it was anything serious.'

Mike Green and Tomas Tatar also scored, and Zetterberg added two assists. Detroit also had Brad Richards back in the lineup after he missed 13 games with a back injury, and defenseman Brendan Smith returned after sitting out five with an illness.

'We knew we needed to attack the net and create some chances,' Tatar said. 'That's the only way we've been getting anything to go in.'

The Red Wings will use that same strategy as they try to win a fourth straight meeting with the Blues. Justin Abdelkader scored on Allen in overtime for a 2-1 victory in the last matchup March 22.

Steen scored the lone goal for St. Louis as Jimmy Howard made 23 saves to end a personal three-game losing streak to the Blues.

Howard will be in net for this meeting as well after Petr Mrazek made 35 saves against the Kings, though he has just a .905 save percentage in his last seven starts.

Zetterberg has just one assist in his last five against the Blues.

Preview: Blackhawks (11-7) at Canucks (6-7)

Date: November 21, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

The Chicago Blackhawks aren't happy with their performances on the road, but they're starting to pick up points.

Patrick Kane continues to pile them up practically everywhere.

Kane looks to extend the longest point streak of his career Saturday night when the Blackhawks face the struggling Vancouver Canucks.

Chicago is 8-2-1 at home compared to 3-5-1 on the road. However, the Blackhawks are 2-0-1 in their last three away from home after falling 2-1 in overtime at Calgary on Friday. They opened this six-game road trip - caused by the circus taking over the United Center - with a 4-3 OT win at Edmonton on Wednesday.

"On the road you gotta find ways to do things right. You gotta scrap," coach Joel Quenneville said Friday. "Games are tied late and you gotta get to overtime and see what happens.

"We were better than we were the other night, but that's still not good enough to get it done."

Kane has certainly been getting it done, leading the league with 13 goals and 31 points. His assist on Artem Anisimov's goal Friday extended his point streak to a personal-best 15 games.

The star winger looks to keep that going against the Canucks (7-7-6), and he's totaled 46 points in 47 career matchups, including the playoffs. However, he has just one point in his last four visits to Vancouver.

Chicago is 2-2-2 in its last six games there, and Corey Crawford has a 2.14 goals-against average while starting each of those. He should be back in net after backup Scott Darling made 35 saves against the Flames.

The Canucks concluded a 1-4-2 road trip with a 4-1 loss at Winnipeg on Wednesday, matching their season-high four-game skid.

Vancouver hosts Chicago and New Jersey on back-to-back nights this weekend before heading back on the road for four games.

"There's a lot of things to focus on. Just try to learn from our mistakes and take advantage of these home games," left wing Brandon Prust said. "We're not pressing the panic button but we definitely have a sense of urgency. Nobody is happy with that road trip.

"Everybody likes winning, but we need to start hating to lose."

Prust, who has five assists, is returning from an ankle injury that forced him to miss 11 games.

"I'm just gonna do what I normally do," Prust said. "Try to bring some energy. Let you're blood flow out there."

The Canucks may also have Radim Vrbata back after he missed one game with a groin injury. He led the team with 31 goals last season, but has just three in 2015-16 and none in his last nine games.

Daniel Sedin has team highs of seven goals and 18 points, but he's found the net twice with two assists in eight home games. He's been kept off the score sheet in three of the last four meetings with Chicago, scoring two goals in the other matchup over that stretch.
