Thank you for your answer Igetp2s.
You'll forgive me if I can't elaborate a whole ton right now because I am writing a speech for my speech class. A persuasive speech that young people should exercise their right to vote, which I think is something we all agree on.
As far as why do I stay here when I obviously am not satisfied with the USA?
Well, first off, don't let all my bitching about GW Bush give you the impression that I hate this country. I don't think anyone hates this country except people who hate the constitution, something I hold dearly.
I guess what I want to point out is that the "mix of social services" and "standard of living" and "opportunity" we enjoy in this country didn't appear out of thin air. People had to fight for them in congress, and there have always been people on both sides of the aisle, and usually they reach a compromise.
-When slavery was an issue there were people on both sides of the aisle
-When Welfare was an issue, there were people on both sides of the aisle
-Ditto for Gun Control, or Abortion, or Income Tax, or the Tax-free status of churches, or whatever.
I guess I just want you to see that we are Americans too, who desperately want to help this country. We just happen to be on a different side of the aisle on this one. Now the conservatives are wininning on this one. But if all the liberals picked up their balls and ran home, then the legislation passed would get even more conservative, pissing off the moderates and so on.. It just can't go on like that, its not natural.
But I haven't left because I think I can change this place for the better. I haven't left for the same reason the Pro-life people didn't leave when Roe v. Wade was passed... they still think they can make a difference, a change.
And dammit.. I'm a baseball fan.. I don't give up till the last out of the last inning. So even if I think this country is slowly drifting toward facism, I'd rather say I fought it all the way, and had to stage a daring escape from Guantanemo Bay with the guards on my tail, than to say I ran away from my country, and left my neighbors to suffer.
