I wasn't suggesting to allow for partial entries. It would be a full entry, but we would be allowed to change it before the deadline. Many contests allow changes right up until the their deadlines. It's not a difficult feature technologically. But Google Forms probably can't handle this. It would require a more sophisticated entry form. But I really feel it would improve the Contest's success and popularity.

Setting a calendar alarm or reminder on one's phone are good ideas! In my case, I didn't forget. I just got called away a couple hours before the deadline and couldn't make it back. First time I ever missed.

I didn't expect much support from current players as it is to our advantage when one of our competitors forgets or misses a deadline. But if I were running the Contest and was interested in growing it, I would implement this one simple suggestion of allowing changes right up until the deadline as many contests do. Once implemented, it would be very popular. I would bet that quite a few players who missed deadlines did not come back to play the next year.

Sure, you can get hung up on trying to be just like the real SuperContest, but you could also make it better than the real SuperContest. We don't have the same deadline for example.

Just making a suggestion FWIW.

Barn,

We have gone through this many times, and most of the talk was that i made a Time change. A few Posters flew in the thread saying it wasn't fair, and that it would
prevent New or More Posters in joining the Contest that Myself and JOH started 4 Years ago.

But like Tanner said, each year it has grown.

When the others came in talking about using a 12 noon or 12:55pm Sunday Deadline to get your picks in. I told them that when we started this contest here at The RX
I wanted to Mirror the REAL LVH/Westgate Contest as much as I can. and That's what I Want. I want theRX posters that for whatever reason that Can't Enter the Real deal
get the Experience of the Real Contest.
and in the Real contest once your picks are in, there are no changes. If you want to play Thursday's Night game, ALL 5 picks must be in.
They have a Deadline, and so do we.

difference being in the Real Contest, players like myself are putting up $1,500, and not $150 ( next season $200 )

Also, from your Post : I would implement this one simple suggestion of allowing changes right up until the deadline as many contests do

I Don't know ONE contest that allows changes. At least not here on the RX, or at least since I've been here

I know it's only a suggestion, but I don't believe it will be changed unless the LVH/Westgate makes a change.

Thanks

Not making excuses. Making a suggestion to improve the contest.
yea how about no

b/c ppl will still make more and more excuses about how they couldn't submit their newest entry etc etc etc

it's a long list that never ends

it's much better to have one firm rule, end of case.

Thanks to JOH and Betall for all your work on this. It's been fun....I just wish I would have remembered to put my picks in on time on the week I missed. Nobody's fault but my own. The current deadline is fine. Thanks guys.

That's fine. From a player's POV, I'm fine with it because we can benefit from others missing the deadline and taking an 0-5. And each week, you see a couple folks miss the deadline for whatever reason. But if I was running the contest and wanted to grow it, I'd make the change because I believe it would help grow the contest even more. It still keeps the same strict deadline. Why not use a little modern technology to improve the contest?

There are other mock SuperContest contests that you are competing with, so I'd want to be the most flexible while still keeping with the spirit of the SuperContest. I wouldn't be so rigid in trying to imitate the SuperContest that I would rule out a very minor change that would make your Contest better then the SuperContest and better than your competitors. But, it's your call.

The higher entry fee of $200 that you propose makes the risk of missing a week even higher and might cause someone to think twice about entering, but if they knew they could put some picks in early to be sure they don't miss if something comes up in their life on Saturday, they would have a lot less hesitation to plunk down the $200.

I wasn't referring to other mock SuperContest contests when I mentioned other contests that allow changes right up until the deadline. I was referring to other online contests like on CBS, ESPN, FOX, NFL.com, Intertops, etc.

Okay, I'll let it go now. If I decide to lay down the extra $50 next year, I'll be sure to set a calendar or phone alarm for the deadline. That certainly is a good suggestion for all of us to avoid missing or forgetting the deadline.

if you are depending on others to miss the deadline to further inch your way up the standings, you probably shouldn't be in this contest to begin with.. Sat. noon Pacific time for the deadline is on you if you miss it....I would think we would all have access to the RX by our cell phones to get it done anyway...

I finished in the money last year and I remember hearing some moaning and groaning from one or two who felt they would have cashed if they didn't miss that deadline once.

An interesting consideration, for the LVH contest, is: "Do You Change It?"

Obviously Technology & the eventual allowance of Sports Betting/Gambling over the internet will give LVH the ability to change the contest to be whatever they want it to be, even including selection of one's 5 games one by one up to kickoff time of each game.

The "Do You Change It?" question would need to factor in that a "Yes" answer equates to making it a whole new contest (not unlike what Baseball became during The Steroid Era) making all past champion's results over the long history of this contest irrelevant, effectively wiping that History out.

Unless, I guess, Champions after the changes get an asterisk.

Is the best route to preserve the History of the contest or....

...keep pace with technology/what other concerns (DFS or others) will make available/offer the most user-friendly contest thats gonna get the most entrants?

Question comes down to which is more valuable: History or growing the contest as large as can be.

Until Jay Kornegay & Westgate discover the answer to that question we won't know.

"growing the contest"
just fucking stop

we've heard this shit before
first it was not having a later deadline would push ppl away - oh wait, we have new record entries
now it's not having editable entries

the contest will continue to be popular and continue to grow. the rules should stay firm and minimal to avoid excuses, loopholes, errors, etc.
honestly, contests like this shouldn't be polluted with multiple rules. the test is simple - who is the best capper? submit your picks by X time every fucking week. it never fucking changes. there shouldn't be exceptions and mods of the contest shouldn't have to put up with this. hopefully they continue to hold out on giving exceptions so maybe one day ppl will stop submitting dumb ideas. they shouldn't have to put in safety measures to protect you from yourself.

whatever time the deadline is, somebody is going to miss it

most don't miss it, there's no excuse to miss it, just accept the fact you fucked up when you miss it (I did once last year)

keep the rules simple, avoid confusion

keep the work the administrators have to do at a minimum and be thankful they continue to do this for us

Merry Christmas everybody, thank you JOH & BAS for all the work you do in running these contests. I think they're amazing

I asserted that as late a deadline to submit entries as possible would create a climate wherein the Highest Number of entries would be gotten and, as you say, that the earlier deadline would cause some who'd have otherwise entered to not do that.

These were Valid concerns BAS put up a Poll guys voted overwhelmingly to keep the reduced deadline. In the Debate that accompanied that I came to appreciate BAS's point of view of desiring this contest reflect as much the LVH, giving guys a chance to be in such a contest without shelling out $1500.

I "learned" from the discussion.

Debate on these things is productive, a "positive" +EV and not a bad thing.

Posting plays at a later time and date would create picks that mirror top 10 in LVH standings... Keep it to LVH rules for fair play

thats on them........

My point was that I DID benefit from others missing deadlines.

I repeat for those not getting it, I am not suggesting changing the deadline. The deadline would not change. No one would notice ANY changes. It would be an under-the-hood change.

Damn, some dinosaurs resist change just for the sake of resisting change. They don't even consider the merits of the change.

Whatever.

Damn, some dinosaurs resist change just for the sake of resisting change. They don't even consider the merits of the change.
there is no merit to the change

the problem is that you didn't submit the picks you wanted by the deadline
the solution to that is to submit picks earlier

the change you're proposing is to allow editable picks
this doesn't change the fact that you may still miss the deadline with your updated/latest picks or any picks at all if whatever life event happens on a tuesday and keeps you occupied all the way until saturday 3pm est.
this really doesn't solve the problem at hand, which is some people will find reasons to not put in their "final" picks. like i don't see why you're ok with a pre-entry on wednesday to go through and you not updating your picks.
if you're ok with it, you should just always submit your picks on wednesday

it seems to me you want to get participation points through a safety net, which really isn't the point of the contest. most people wait until fri/sat to submit so they have the most information. yes there is a risk that something comes up in real life and you don't get your picks in. you KNOW waiting until saturday to submit is a risk. you took that risk, and you should accept responsibility for it. all other participants take that same risk. reduce your risk by submitting earlier, end of case. in the grand scheme of things, timing of submission of picks shouldn't really be a deep strategy but i guess for other people it's a much bigger factor requiring real complex set ups of alarms and such /s. i mean, if you know you're going to be busy or if you are just a busy person in general, maybe the contest isn't right for you. i don't know how much more convenient we can make it. you can submit through your phone for christ's sakes.

Who cares if you benefited from it last year ? that doesn't mean anything in this discussion
