NHL gets a 1.7 rating for game 1 of the finals

This. I got no problems with white people. I have issues with a specific breed of white male, the conservative white male, but that is a separate debate and not part of this. Race is not why I attack the NHL. I attack the NHL because of apologists like I referenced a few posts ago that actually believe a 1.7 rating means your sport is widely popular and part of the "big 4". there is no big 4, it's the big 3, and the nhl is down with MLS and Arena League football.

The NBA pregame show will likely double that final 1.7 number from nhl game 1 finals.

There's a bigger difference from NFL to NBA ratings than NBA to NHL, just saying. No way is NHL as popular as the NBA, but it's not on the same level as the MLS. I can bet NHL at any sportsbook in Vegas easily and get the same amount down as the NBA, but not the same as the NFL, and MLS forgetta about it.

Your just never gonna have people on message boards arguing who is better Ovie or Crosby, Gretzky or Mario like you do with NBA or NFL. It just doesn't really capture peoples imagination that way I feel like...

Part of that is that the nature of the game is so team-oriented that it doesn't cater to individual statistics. In this day and age where stats are all at your fingertips and fantasy leagues rule, that is a big detriment to its popularity.

Biggest reason is that it's hard to watch on tv....even with HD. Love the game live but can't watch the whole thing on tv.

I agree with you about the water cooler type talk, even though the team-oriented nature is a positive aspect to me.

I do disagree that it sucks for gambling though, betting the NFL is the only thing that is more fun than betting a playoff NHL game, to me.

I don't see it that way. Watch the NHL network they have retired black players as their anchors, I think the NHL is trying hard to be me more diverse, but it's tough because you don't have ice rinks as easily available as BB courts in every inner city.
