My thoughts on USA's u20...
nothing new for USA getting a Group of Death at the finals of a major tournament. You've got Euro u19 champs, Spain, African finalists and u20 world cup winners from 2009, Ghana, and the always solid France u20 group. So I certainly don't expect them to advance from this group and would be happy with 2-3 points though a 0-1-2 2/7 or so is more likely.
they didn't even make the tourney in 2011 which after the miserable 2009, 1-0-2 (didn't get out of group), wasn't a big deal. They actually won their group in both 2005 and 2007 and made it all the way to the quarters in 2003 so things are on a big of a decline all around.
This team isn't really the best the u20's have to offer. Packwood (Birm), Brooks (Hertha) and Pelosi (Lpool) would definitely be starters if they weren't injured or uninterested, starting center back O'Neill is suspended for Spain match, and Luis Gil enters the tourney with a possible head injury so that's 4 key players right there. Gil, Cuevas, and Villareal are probably the best offensive guys they have...Villareal, in particular, can use the tourney as a springboard for Europe. Cuevas is always injuredy but very speedy winger and can cause problems for any defense.
Gil and Villareal (and I think also Cuevas) didn't play in the Toulon tourney but the USA was really poor. Hammered by an avg France team and then a solid loss to Colombia and Korea so that should temper anyone's expectations for Turkey.
So I'm hoping they lose today then beat France and Ghana but not expecting any win actually so anything positive will be a pleasant surprise
Today's match will see a makeshift defense with a right back, Miller, playing in central defense. Missing guys like Pelosi and Packwood that were important in qualifying really hurts and having O'Neill suspended against Spain is a rough way to start. Spain is favored to win this tournament for the first time since 1999. They've made it out of group stage for every tourney they have qualified for since 1989 including the quarters in 2011. They only have one played with more than 4 u20 caps so not as experienced as USA but they are part of every major club you can think of like City, Real Madrid, Barca, Atletico, Liverpool, and Valencia. USA have just 3 European based players, 4 more in Mexico...the rest either in US colleges or largely MLS reserve league. For betting, the line is way too crazy now but if 0-0 HT I'd jump on Spain 2H
