No Sadly Paul Has Passed On

And yes he was a true AA, & triple threat, runner up to Lattner for the Heisman in 53. He was also a hell of a baseball pitcher drafted by the NYG. For a long time he was the only player to be 2 time B10 MVP. The BIG W that yr (53) was over Mich., 22-0. If he had come along a few yrs earlier to be on the tm that had Nomellini, Tonamaker, Grant (yes that Bud Grant) they'd have been awesome. Giel was one of those guys like, Beban, Dawkins, Bellino, Baker etc., who were great college players and either didn't get the chance or were just not cut out for the NFL. Love to reminisce about those days. My first love was listening to Harry Wismer broadcast every 1946 Army game w/Doc & Davis. I was preteen but loved foots even then. Also used to listen (radio of course) to the Packers on Sun., as those were the days of only 8 franchises. Anyone know who the "Grey Ghost of Gonzaga" was? :think2:

Minnesota = SOS Rank 76
Northwestern = SOS Rank 66
Illinois = SOS Rank 39

So while the Illini have faced much better teams, they are 4-3 and the other two teams are 6-1, not much you can do about it.

@ Pur. & Wisc., home NW, Mich, & Iowa. Big "IF", they:missingte handle Purdue, now -2 @ BM, then I can see W's vs NW & Mich.! If this tm finishes 9-3, that would be the biggest 180 in GG history.

I think they finish like this:

Purdue = WIN
Wiscy = LOSS
NW = LOSS
Michigan: = WIN
Iowa = LOSS

They go 2-3 rest of the way and finish 8-4, if my math is right. The boosters and alums will be happy with this...as they have been mediocre since Maroney and Barber left.

Minnesota is my Co top play of the week, Purdue has given up, cashed in their chips. How you could bet on that team vs a HOT Minnesota team, just because they got ranked and have only lost 1 game all year is beyond me, its your loss.

Who would YOU replace Minn and Northwestern with in the top 25?

Among the teams "others receiving votes":

Cincinnati, Illinois, California..

Colorado gets a vote for 25th from a coaches pollsters? :nohead: . I have them ranked 114th out of 120 in my Gambling Rankings.

The line is where it is, because there are differing opinions. I would ask what is so hot about a Minny team that struggled with a God-awful Indiana team, and then gave up 470 yards passing to Juice, only to eek out a win because of gift turnovers and mistakes by the Illini in the red zone. This team is solid, but they are very much overrated. The fact that they are owned historically by Purdue, led by a senior QB with a respected lame duck coach and homefield.....I think Purdue is the bet. Not huge, but worth a couple hundred bucks.

That was none other then Tony Canadeo (of Packer of fame); he Played for "Curly" Lambeau. Gosh Silver Man, you are old, almost as old as I am.

Best regards, and forever good luck.

Very Good Mac

We're probably the only 2 guys old enough to know that bit of trivia. If you're older than I am, then I believe you are indeed the "Ancient Mariner"! Actually was 13 when I listened to that great Army tm. "What goes around comes around". As the old Single Wing seems reborn @ Fl., w/Tebow. Others also running versions of it. Tho in the original the QB was more of a blocker than anything else. TB or LH, w/FB beside him. RH split out. Mn., UCLA & Pitt were the last to run it I think. May have been a few others, but that's what I recall. Where you from Mac?

Born in 1931 or 1933?

I am assuming you are talking about the Army team of '44? Maybe '46, not sure.

I watched Minny take apart Ill.
Minny has a very well balanced team. Both the D & O line can move some bodies. The skilled postions have enough to speed that they can react to the ball.
I really like Minny over Purdue.

the only reason these two teams are ranked is cuz they are from a BCS conference...simple. The voters arent gonna completely disrespect any of those major conferences so they are all gonna get some scrubs getting ranked.

WTF Difference Does It Make?

If they lose you're justified, if not you still won't be satisfied.

Quarter backs, half backs and full backs;

Mn., UCLA & Pitt were the last to run it I think. that was the description of the back field up until the advent of the T-formation.

Yes, the "quarter back" was really the blocking back and, beleive it or not, he was, more often then not, the smaller of the three positions ("quarter" the size); the half back was a notch above in size and, perhaps, the most athletic, therefor (the half-back); and the "big" bruiser (the full back) was the brawn of the back field (the pile driver); "three yards and a cloud of dust" type.

I was a "snot nose" 17 year old freshman at the university of Wisconsin in the fall of 1952 right of the farm about an hour north of Milwaukee who thought he could play basketball; I do remember "Whitey" Skoog from Minesota who was one of the first of the jump shot "pistols" that came along during that period in time. (Robin Freeman out of Ohio state, Frank Selvy from Furman and "Whitey" Skoog out of Minnesota to mention a few), all well before "Pistol Pete"

I mostly browse the forum (there are a lot of knowledgeable handicappers that post) of which I try to take advantage of ( I do make a play or two or three from time to time). Sports betting conducted in reasonable measures can be one of the true challenges of life (your are really dealing with human nature).

I hope we can continue our dialogue from time in the future; I will watch for your posts.

warmest regards,

Mack Donald.

This Motherfucking Gophers team has done the unexpected thus far. No one gave them a shot to win more than 3 games this season. Great job by the coaching staff to generate some optimism once again.......great timing, since next year they will be moving into a new on campus stadium. Go Gophers.
