Tiger Woods Saga Causes Betting Bonanza

Superstar remains favorite for US Masters, despite uncertainty over whether he will even participate.

By Nadav S | Dec 16, 2009

The ongoing saga over Tiger Woods' personal life has caused a betting bonanza for golf fans, as uncertainty continues to cloud the future of the 14-time Major Championships winner.

Woods, who announced on Friday that he would be taking an indefinite leave from professional golf to focus on his marriage, remains a 5/2 William Hill favorite to win the next major - April's US Masters in Augusta, Georgia - despite the likelihood that he won't appear at all.

Phil Mickelson is second in the betting at 11/2, followed by Padraig Harrington 14/1, and Geoff Ogilvy, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood all on 16/1.

The odds show the dominance of the sport by the 33-year-old Woods, who was publicly revealed to have cheated on his wife following an incident in late November in which Woods had a car accident outside his Florida home. Woods was treated for minor facial lacerations and reported for careless driving following the accident.

Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has found another angle to the Woods story, reportedly offering betting odds on who will get the first interview with him. Oprah Winfrey tops the list at odds-on favoritism, with Barbara Walters, Jay Leno, Larry King and David Letterman all figuring in the market.

Woods is 5/4 at Paddy Power to not participate in the Masters, and 7/2 to not participate in a PGA tournament at all in 2010. The US Masters is seen as the most likely stage for Woods' return, at 5/2.

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

<script type="text/javascript"> tiiQuigoWriteAd(757767, 1348106, 180, 240, -1);</script>The holidays may bring a final showdown in the marriage of Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren, a source close to the golfer's wife tells PEOPLE, saying, "She plans to leave Tiger."

Another source says, "She's made up her mind. There's nothing to think about: he's never going to change," PEOPLE reports in its upcoming issue, on newsstands Friday.

Photos circulated this week, showing Nordegren, 29, pumping gas into her vehicle near the couple's home in Windermere, Fla., last Saturday, also captured the Swedish-born former nanny and mother of two (Sam, 2, and Charlie, 10 months), not wearing her wedding ring. <!-- jump -->

While the missing band "meant nothing," insists a source, a high-profile Florida divorce attorney tells PEOPLE that Nordegren has met with lawyers to renegotiate the Woods' prenuptial agreement.

On Thursday, workers began moving large items including what appeared to be works of art out of the couple's home in Windermere, Fla., and Nordegren was seen giving them instructions, according to the New York Post.

IMHO, the best thing that can happen to Tiger and Elin is to get a divorce. This would allow both to move ahead with their lives. Elin could be back with her family and Tiger could try and get back to work and his girlfriends without anyone caring anymore. As long as he is married, this scandal will remain the primary focus. Once divorced, he is free to live the lifestyle he obviously prefers.

On a second note, I don't believe he will ever be nearly the winning golfer he has been. All his life, he has had support from family, friends and fans. When he steps inside the ropes again, the fan support will be gone. His mind will never be clear of this scandal as he is showing that he is too immature to deal with what he has done. To be a highly successful professional athlete, you must be able to focus completely, particularly in an individual sport. Don't expect to see him in the Masters this year unless he is either completely separated from Elin or a divorce is already underway. He hides for a reason and that is because he cannot deal with the real outside world. Sponsors are dropping him quickly and that will only continue.

Simply incredible. A boy in a man's body so naive to not realize the potential impact on his life. He will never be viewed the same and for someone like him, this will be mentally devastating.

Tiger takes record tumble in popularity

LOS ANGELES: Tiger Woods has taken the largest rating plunge in Gallup Poll history as a result of the sex scandal that forced the world’s first billion-dollar athlete to halt his epic golf career.
Even as sports memorabilia firm Upper Deck vowed Tuesday to stick by Woods, results of USA Today/Gallup and Washington Post/ABC News weekend polls show the US public has a harsh view on the 14-time major champion’s infidelity.
More than a dozen women have claimed affairs with embattled Woods, who has admitted being unfaithful to wife Elin and said he will take a break from professional golf to work on being a better husband, father and person.
Woods had only a 33% “favorable” rating in a poll taken last weekend compared to an 85% mark in 2005 when the question was last posed, the 52-point plunge the largest since drops were first measured in 1992.
Gallup Poll managing editor Jeffrey Jones called the drop “definitely unprecedented” and said he has fallen below many of the usual lowest of the low - politicians.
In 2000, when Woods was winning the “Tiger Slam” of four majors in a row, his favourable rating peaked at 88% - the highest figure in poll history.
The fall from that mark matches ex-President George W. Bush’s all-time record.
“Unfavourable” marks for Woods in the same poll jumped from eight % in 2005 to 57%, with 61% of women but just 53% of men grading Woods unfavourably.
USA Today/Gallup found 19% of those who responded would have a less favorable opinion of any product endorsed by Woods.
Nevertheless, Upper Deck Company joined Nike and video game maker Electronic Arts in supporting Woods, saying it will continue exclusive deals with Woods that began in 2001.
“Upper Deck will maintain its exclusive agreement with Tiger in both our sports cards and memorabilia categories and we look forward to his eventual return to the PGA Tour,” Upper Deck chief executive Richard McWilliam said. “Tiger and his family have our full support.”
Global consulting firm Accenture dropped Woods on Sunday, the first sponsor to dump him. AT&T and Tag Heuer are reevaluating their Woods deals. Gillette, a Procter and Gamble brand, says it will pull Woods from ads during his hiatus.
The Post/ABC poll had 43% saying they view Woods unfavourably, with more than one in four saying their opinion of him was strongly negative.
Among women in the poll, 39% saw Woods as favourable to 45% unfavorable, while men were 46% favorable to 41% unfavorable. — AFP

Best thing for Tiger is to get the divorce and move on with his life...he isn't going to stop banging broads cold turkey...

He will continue to be the best there is on the PGA tour and I belive he comes out more focused when he returns...his mental edge is twice that of any competitor..

For the record, I don't have one bit of jealousy or hatred toward Mr. Toast.............do I like, no, I DON'T LIKE HIM, AND HAVE NO RESPECT FOR HIM.....(see Jesper Parnivik).

By the way, since this story broke until now, I have for the most part been spot on with my feelings as to what was going to transpire in the aftermath of this.........just hope I don't continue to be spot on, as I certainly DO NOT WANT ANYONE PHYSICALLY HARMED HERE........be it Toast himself or anyone he is associated with.

so because u dont respect him, you can't objectively look at his performance as a golfer or are you still working on your top 10 list?
