It’s funny that Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin brought up the issue of cell phone use. It seems ironic considering he did something strange — not a violation, but definitely odd — with Nu’Keese Richardson’s phone while Richardson was in Knoxville, Tenn., last weekend.

Kiffin and Richardson sat next to each other Saturday at Tennessee’s Thompson-Boling Arena for the Volunteers’ basketball game against Florida. When Pahokee coach Blaze Thompson texted Richardson to inquire about the trip, Kiffin was looking over Richardson’s shoulder to monitor the phone — no doubt spooked by Florida coach Urban Meyer’s earlier phone calls.

What he did next might be the strangest element of Richardson’s recruitment. Kiffin asked for the phone and began texting Thompson, pretending he was Richardson.

Thompson had sent a message to Richardson asking if he was enjoying the basketball game and his visit. He got the following response from Richardson’s phone, as he recalled it: “Yes. I love it. My decision is made.”

But Kiffin was the one punching keys.

Richardson confirmed the incident Thursday, though he said the whole thing was a “joke.” Thompson clearly did not find it humorous. He also did not find it funny that Kiffin’s staff had circumvented him at several key points in Richardson’s recruitment.

In any case, what is a college coach doing with a recruit’s phone?

“I don’t know,” Thompson said, shaking his head.

I don’t know, either. I do know, though, that there would have been far fewer questions about cell phones if Kiffin hadn’t brought up the topic. Earlier today he accused Meyer of cheating by calling Richardson during his visit. The SEC pointed out that it was not a recruiting violation and admonished Kiffin for his lack of knowledge on the rules.

i know Florida fans hated Bruce Pearl from day 1 too, for the record hes now 6-1 vs the Gators, he has parties at his house for his players, and on his boat. goes to the club with em...hes just an idiot i guess!

How dare a coach have fun with his players. I think the players respct this much more than a coach like Urban Cryer who rusn and hides behidn Jeremy Foley and Mike Slive.

I agree w/ this G627. When he came out to the woman's game w/ his chest painted....THAT was classic! I love the guy! Also, as far as I recall Billy Donovan is the only coach in the SEC w/ back to back National Championships. In fact, isn't he the only active coach w/ that accomplishment? What do Gator fans have to be jealous/worried about? We're a football school first.....

Bruce Pearl has always acknowledged that Coach Donovan runs a program like he would like to and he even said he would root for us in the tournament. Pearl also runs a clean program with no recruiting violations. and, like CB said, the guy came out with his chest painted for a women's CBB game. How can you not like him?

Congrats, he's 6-1 against Florida but we still have 2 basketball NCAA titles.

Knoxville -- WVLT's sports partners at the Knoxville News-Sentinel and govolsxtra.com are reporting that Tennessee self-reported two secondary violations that occurred last month during recruiting visits.

On January 16th, nine prospects visited the UT campus and took part in a mock press conference in Neyland Stadium. According to the story, coaches asked the players questions while they were being taped.

Tennessee also self-reported a January 9th incident when the Vols used a fog machine in Neyland Stadium.

The NCAA prohibits schools from simulating a game experience for recruits during official visits.
